UCLA CONFERENCE TO MARK 500 YEARS OF ARMENIAN PRINTING

LOS ANGELES-From Nov. 10-11, the Richard Hovannisian Endowed Chair in
Modern Armenian History at UCLA will host an international conference
titled “Port Cities and Printers: Five Centuries of Global Armenian
Print” in honor of Prof. Richard Hovannisian.

>From its origins in Venice in 1512, the history of early modern
(1500-1800) Armenian print culture was closely entangled with that of
port cities, initially in Europe and subsequently in Asia. In fact,
virtually every Armenian printing press before 1800 was established
either in or close to port cities, and the few that were not, owed
their existence to ongoing relations with port locations. Yet, despite
the obvious relationship between ports and printers, their synergetic
relationship has thus far largely eluded scholarly attention. Convened
on the quincentenary of the printing of the first Armenian book, this
conference explores the intimate relationship between port cities
and printers in the rich history of global Armenian print culture.

The conference will be convened by Dr. Sebouh D. Aslanian, the holder
of the Richard Hovannisian Endowed Chair of Modern Armenian History
at UCLA, and is co-sponsored by the UCLA Department of History, the
UCLA G. E. Von Grunebaum Center for Near Eastern Studies, the UCLA
Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, the UCLA Center for 17th-
and 18th-Century Studies, the National Association for Armenian Studies
and Research (NAASR), and is made possible by a generous grant by Mark
Chenian. The conference will kick off with a keynote address on the
topic of the history of books and reading in the early modern Atlantic
world, not directly related to Armenian print history, at Royce Hall
314 on Friday evening at 5 p.m. Starting on Saturday morning at 9:15
a.m. scholars of Armenian print and book history will hold back-to-back
panels on various aspects of Armenian book history ranging from the
question of the crucial shift from Manuscript to Print culture in
the early decades of the 1500s to the relationship between merchants,
ports, and printers, as well as the social and cultural role of print
technology in shaping the arc of Armenian history. The Saturday and
Sunday panels will be held at Rolfe Hall 1200 on the UCLA campus from
9:15 AM to 6:00 PM. The conference is free and open to the public.

‘ORPHANS OF THE GENOCIDE’ DEBUT A SUCCESS

The film debuts at Woodbury University

BURBANK, Calif.-The presentation of the broadcast version documentary
“Orphans of the Genocide” directed by four time Emmy award winner
Bared Maronian, took place on Sunday, September 30th at 4:00 p.m. at
the Woodbury University in Burbank, California. This well attended
event was organized by Ararat- Eskijian Museum, with the support of
both the Western Diocese of America and the Prelacy churches.

Filmmaker Bared Maronian during his presentation Martin Eskijian
welcomed the attendees on behalf of the Ararat-Eskijian Museum and
invited the world-renowned Armenian Genocide scholar, Professor
Vahakn N . Dadrian to the stage. Professor Dadrian gave a compelling
introductory lecture on the extreme cruelty these young orphan
children experienced at the hands of the Ottoman Turks. Not only
were some brutally murdered by hatchets, poison and swords, but
also the novel method of mass drowning at the shores of the Black
Sea and sections of the Euphrates River, especially in the Harput
province, was utilized. Often the victims were mercilessly brutalized
through sexual abuse, before being murdered, irrespective of the
gender. Children placed in Turkish homes were almost always sexually
abused and brothels were common. Another, milder form of perpetration
involved the reducing of female victims in many Turkish households to
the status of a concubine. In rare instances the female victims were
integrated in a Turkish household as a legitimate wife, often as one
of several wives, or, as a single wife. Very few of these could, or
wanted to return to their original household after the end of the war.

Professor Dadrian’s eye opening lecture was followed by Bared
Maronian’s dynamic presentation of the Armenoid Team’s inception,
accomplishments and future plans with a focus on the team’s current
project, “Orphans of the Genocide” that consists of a documentary
film and a companion book, telling the story of untold numbers of
Armenian children who had become prime targets by the organizers of
the Genocide. Maronian’s extraordinary work depicts a theme that for
decades has remained overlooked by historians trying to explore the
various aspects of the World War I cataclysm that nearly obliterated
the Armenian nation.

The material in question almost entirely focuses on the surviving
Armenian children. The extreme and deplorable condition and abuses of
these surviving orphans allows insight into the overall context and
intent of the crime. The object of “Turkification” also was a form
of genocide that was perpetrated on the Armenian nation by stripping
the children of their Armenian identity. Maronian showed 4 complete
segments of the broadcast version of the film, which resonated a
benchmark production value and a unique story telling technique. At
the conclusion of hid presentation, Maronian gave the attendees a
chance to express their thoughts on his film, who in return praised
the well researched and produced touching film depicting the stories
of the Armenian Genocide orphans.

Prof. Vahakn Dadrian Maronian thanked the attendees for their support
especially all those who generously contributed to his project. The
seed-money for the project was provided by Alecco Bezikian, who
is the son of an Armenian Genocide Orphan. Dr. Noubar Ouzounian
and Sarah Chitjian, both a son and a daughter of Genocide orphans
continually supported “Orphans of the Genocide”. “I wholeheartedly
thank all those who made this project possible, specially the curator
of Ararat-Eskijian Museum, Maggie Goschin-Mangassarian who adopted
this project from it’s inception”.

Among the dignitaries were accomplished Hollywood producer Howard
Kazanjian and Missak Keleshian, the researcher who unrevealed the
story of the Armenian Genocide orphans of Aintoura, Lebanon, who were
destined for “Turkification”.

The closing words were delivered by Nancy Eskijian, Esq., who
reiterated the importance of supporting the project at hand in any
way possible.

Finally, Western Primate Hovnan Derderian commended Maronian’s work
and concluded his words by saying, “after seeing this powerful film,
I can attest that genocide has a different meaning to me.”

Upon the conclusion of the event the guests were invited to a reception
at the atrium of the Fletcher Jones Foundation Auditorium of Woodbury
University, where 18 images depicting the experiences of Armenian
Genocide orphans were displayed on special canvas prints.

HRAPARAK: ARMENIAN PRESIDENT ORDERS ‘PRE-SCHEDULE RESIGNATIONS’

Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan has reportedly “ordered” the mayors
and heads of rural communities that failed to be re-elected to hand
in their “pre-schedule resignations.”

The order turns out to concern only the members of the ruling
Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) that headed the communities where
the ruling party was not so successful in the latest elections.

The mayors of Ashtarak and Gyumri handed in their “pre-schedule
resignations.”

On the other hand, Dmitry Nazaryan, a member of the Prosperous Armenia
Party (PAP), who was elected Masis mayor, told the newspaper that he
did not receive any “orders.”

WILL TICKET PRICE FROM ARMENIA TO SYRIA GO UP BECAUSE OF TURKISH BAN?

After Syrian planes have been banned from Turkish air space the Syrian
Airlines company implementing Aleppo-Yerevan and Yerevan-Aleppo flights
has to bypass Turkey for reaching Syria, which means the one and half
hour long flight will take now 4 hours.

According to representatives of the Armenian community, the Turkey’s
air space will be replaced by those of Iran and Iraq. Syrian Airlines
official said air spaces of other countries will be used, but did
not specify of which countries.

The prolongation of the time of flight, is supposed to cause raise in
ticket price. Syrian Airlines representative though said no changes
of tariffs are expected yet. The ticket price has remained the same.

As far as Turkey’s ban relates only to Syrian aircraft, Tert.am tried
to find out whether Armavia would resume the flights suspended from
September 17 or not.

Spokesperson of the airline Nana Avetisova told Tert.am that Armavia
will not resume flights. She said people were not buying tickets
that’s why Armavia suspended flights.

The Syrian Armenians preferred to buy tickets from Syrian Airlines
as they were much cheaper.

HAYKAKAN ZHAMANAK: OLIGARCHS’ SUPERMARKETS PUT END TO SHOPS

Fifty-five of Yerevan 180 supermarkets are owned by seven companies.

The STAR chain has 30 supermarkets, with the Yerevan City chain
reporting the highest sales.

A survey conducted by MPG LLC, the official and exclusive partner of
the world-renowned research company GALLUP International Association,
showed that 73.4% of Armenian consumers make purchases at supermarkets.

This is a clear proof that supermarkets, which are mostly owned by
oligarchs, have swept away shops.

POST OFFICE BUILDING OF TURKEY’S MARDIN BUILT BY ARMENIAN ARCHITECT TO TURN INTO HOTEL

The building of the 7th postal division of the Turkish Mardin town
built by Armenian architect is being reconstructed, Agos reports.

After reconstruction Armenian architect Sargis Lole’s building will
turn into a hotel.

The 125-year-old building is being renovated by the Supreme School
of Tourism and Hotels.

The building was built in 1890 and served as a post office. In 2011
it was considered the 7th out of ten most picturesque post offices
in the world.

The supreme school has rented the building for ten years and aims to
attract tourists to Mardin.

Les varietes armeniennes de fromage peuvent etre tout a fait
competitives sur les marches europeens a declare le ministre de
l’agriculture Sergo Karapetyan lors d’une conference de presse.

” L’Armenie a un grand potentiel pour l’exportation des produits
d’origine animale, particulièrement le fromage sur les marches
europeens ” a dit Sergo Karapetyan, ajoutant que les obstacles pour
l’expansion des exportations sont de se rapprocher des standards de
securite alimentaire.

” Le premier pas est de regler la structure legislative par rapport
a la securite alimentaire, parce que si nous voulons integrer l’UE,
nous avons besoin de rendre notre legislation conforme aux standards
europeens ” a-t-il dit.

Au debut de 2010, l’Agence de Developpement du gouvernement armenien
et l’Union des Producteurs de Fromage ont fonde la societe de Fromage
Armenien, qui emploie les meilleurs fabricants de fromage dans le
pays, utilise le lait de qualite des pâturages alpestres et est le
plus grand exportateur de fromage dans le pays.

L’annee dernière la societe a exporte 25 tonnes de fromage,
principalement vers la Russie.

LE PONT MEDIEVAL DE GARNI SERA MIS EN SERVICE A L’AUTOMNE

Le pont de Garni construit au cours du 11e siècle sera mis en service
a l’automne. Les travaux de restauration ont commence depuis le 2
juillet et la première etape s’est terminee le 15 août.

Les personnes responsables de la Compagnie de Construction ont assure
que tout sera pret plus tôt que la date prevue vers novembre.

La reconstruction de ce monument historique et culturel a ete lancee
l’annee dernière via le protocole ” Garder les valeurs culturelles des
ambassadeurs ” signe par le ministre de la Culture Hasmik Poghosyan
et l’ambassadeur extraordinaire et plenipotentiaire des Etats-Unis
en Armenie John Heffern.

L’ambassade americaine a cet effet a fourni 110000 dollars americains.

Un membre conservateur du Parlement dit que l’Occident a abandonne ses
amis Chretiens a un regime brutal. En 1945, ma mère, trop jeune meme
pour aller a l’ecole, en compagnie de millions d’autres Allemands,
quittait Breslau et fuyait vers l’ouest, l’Armee Rouge avancant. Mes
ancetres avaient vecu dans cette region de Silesie (allemande depuis
1242) pendant au moins neuf generations a ce que je sais.

L’expatriation forcee – un processus que l’on nomme aujourd’hui
nettoyage ethnique – de la famille de ma mère et de millions d’autres
civils de groupes dont la nationalite serait plus tard inevitablement
rattachee a leur appartenance ethnique, etait largement ignoree dans
l’euphorie qui avait balaye le monde a la fin de la Seconde Guerre
Mondiale.

Ils ne sont jamais retournes

A present, nous assistons a une autre vague de deplacement de civils
au Moyen Orient, avec des centaines de milliers de Chretiens forces
de fuir, etant bannis des terres sur lesquelles ils vivaient depuis
2000 ans, dans la remarquable remontee en puissance des peuples
arabes a laquelle nous assistons. Leur sort a ete largement oublie,
l’attention des media du monde s’est deplacee d’Egypte et de Lybie pour
s’installer en Syrie pour rendre compte des terribles bains de sang
a Damas, Houla, Alep et Homs. Des personnes innocentes de toutes les
parties endurent des souffrances terribles, la mort et la torture ;
la guerre civile ne fait aucune difference entre les jeunes et les
vieux, les riches et les pauvres, dans l’horrible saignee que nous
voyons sous nos yeux, personne n’est apparemment a l’abri d’une mort
soudaine et de la destruction de ses biens.

Desespoir

Il en va ainsi pour plus de deux millions de Syriens adeptes de la foi
du Christ, et dont la presence remonte a 2000 ans, au premier siècle
après J.C., lorsque Saint Paul y prechait le christianisme,Nettoyage
ethnique, une expression laide, mais qui decrit exactement ce que
subissent en ce moment les Chretiens de Syrie. C’est a present
l’indicible verite : les importantes communautes chretiennes de la
Syrie dechiree par la guerre, sont plus que jamais, sur les terres de
leurs ancetres, sous la menace d’un nettoyage ethnique – souvent le
fait de ceux qui se qualifient eux-memes de combattants de la liberte
tellement loues par la presse occidentale.

Ces combattants, de plus en plus souvent des agitateurs djihadistes
sans liens reels avec les affaires de Damas, ne voient pas les
Chretiens dans leurs enclaves comme de bons voisins aux côtes desquels
ils ont vecu pendant des siècles, comme de nombreux Syriens rebelles
les considèrent. C’est vrai, les minorites religieuses trouvent
souvent la protection la plus efficace sous les regimes dictatoriaux.

Il n’y a rien a gagner a changer le statu quo. Mais user de cet
argument pour les attaquer, pour detruire les eglises anciennes, et
les tenir en otages apparaît comme un pretexte de circonstance. Les
Djihadistes les voient simplement comme representant une foi infidèle
et les considèrent d’une facon rarement admise par les rebelles
syriens du debut. Les Chretiens de Syrie, qui forment moins de dix
pourcent d’une population estimee a 23 millions, sont des Orthodoxes
grecs, des Orthodoxes syriaques, des Maronites et des Melkites grecs
de foi catholique. Des milliers s’en sont deja alles, elements de
la grande maree de Syriens deplaces, fuyant un conflit dans lequel,
disent les groupes d’opposition, 27 000 personnes sont mortes. Dans
la region d’Homs, 80 000 se sont enfuis, les eglises et les centres
des communautes ont ete prises pour cibles, defigures et leurs icones
religieuses volees. S’il est vrai que quelques Chretiens ont tenu
du temps d’Assad des postes en vue, il y en a eu certains qui ont
tenu des rôles de chefs d’opposition a Assad, comme George Sabra, qui
postula au poste de president du Conseil National Syrien d’opposition,
clairement anti-Assad.

L’exemple irakien

Ces Chretiens sont a present a l’etranger, accueillis par des amis,
dans les jardins ou dans les eglises au Liban, en Turquie, loin de la
ligne de feu. Quelques uns ont resolu de prendre les armes et de se
battre du côte du Gouvernement, un acte anathème pour eux a travers
leur histoire. Ce que les Chretiens syriens de ma circonscription
craignent le plus, c’est qu’une fois partis, il n’y aura plus de
retour. Une victoire rebelle et l’installation d’un regime islamique
plus dur pourraient bien interdire le retour d’une societe pluraliste,
avec des Chretiens vivant parmi les Musulmans chiites et sunnites
comme cela etait le cas depuis des temps bibliques.

Les evenements en Iraq fournissent un exemple opportun. Au milieu
d’une effusion de sang sauvage entre Sunnites et Chiites au lendemain
de l’invasion de l’Iraq dirigee par les USA en 2003, l’histoire des
populations chretiennes fait partie de celles dont on parle rarement.

Mais depuis l’invasion, on estime a la moitie le nombre de ceux qui
ont dû, desesperes, quitter le pays.

Quelques 330 000 Chretiens irakiens ont fui vers la seule Syrie dans la
decennie passee – et ils doivent fuir a nouveau. D’autres ont trouve
refuge en Jordanie et naturellement d’autres sont venus jusque sur
nos rivages, y compris sur ceux de ma circonscription, les Cites de
Londres et de Westminster. Sous Saddam Hussein, quelques Chretiens
se sont eleves au sommet de la politique, comme Tarek Aziz, le Vice
– Premier Ministre d’ Hussein. Mais depuis la chute du dictateur,
la violence contre la minorite chretienne, souvent associee aux ”
croises envahisseurs “, se traduit par des enlèvements, la decapitation
d’un pretre, la destruction a l’explosif d’eglises anciennes et le
conversion forcee a l’Islam.

Telle est la toile de fond du sort qui je le crains attend dans la
decennie a venir la population chretienne etablie dans cette region
depuis longtemps. L’Occident doit agir maintenant pour proteger
les Chretiens de Syrie, d’Egypte et d’Iraq et assurer la liberte de
religion des Chretiens qui seront soumis aux lois de tout nouveau
regime futur si nous voulons eviter que le bannissement de leurs
terres de Chretiens d’Orient au cours des annees qui viennent ne soit
pas un avatar du soulèvement du Moyen – Orient.

Rencontre entre le chef du BHK et des diplomates europeens

Gagik Tsarukian, le chef du BHK, a rencontre a Erevan des diplomates
europeens pour discuter avec eux de l’affaire penale ouverte contre
l’un de ses allies, Vartan Oskanian. La reunion a eu lieu dans les
locaux d’une entreprise de liqueur appartenant a Tsarukian. ” C’etait
une reunion planifiee qui se composait de deux parties “, a declare
Ivetta Tonoyan, une porte-parole du Parti Armenie prospère (BHK)
mercredi 17 octobre. La seconde partie de la reunion etait a huis clos.

Les diplomates europeens a Erevan n’ont pas fait de declarations
après la reunion. Dans une declaration qui a suivi, John Heffern,
ambassadeur americain en Armenie a reitere les preoccupations
americaines concernant l’affaire de fraude contre Oskanian.

Oskanian a ete formellement accuse la semaine dernière d’avoir
detourne 1,4 million de dollars. Il nie les accusations, affirmant
qu’elles sont politiquement motivees. Les autorites, quant a elles,
nient tous motifs politiques. Selon les medias, Tsarukian et son
parti seraient sous la pression du gouvernement pour soutenir Serge
Sarkissian lors de la prochaine election presidentielle. Le magnat
n’a toujours pas precise si le BHK, qui s’est retire de la coalition
au pouvoir en juin dernier, soutiendra la reelection de Sarkissian.

Oskanian la semaine dernière, s’est dit pret a briguer la presidence
sous l’etiquette du BHK.

Tout homme politique est libre de choisir son chemin d’action, a
annonce Hovannes Sahakian, le secretaire du groupe parlementaire
du HHK. ” Si l’on considère cette periode comme un processus
pre-electoral, alors nous devons tous etre extremement prudents et
vigilants afin que nos actions ne nuisent pas a ce processus d’une
manière ou d’une autre et nous devons faire attention qu’elles ne
soient pas au detriment de notre Etat et du peuple. ”
