The ANCA-WR endorsements

GLENDALE-On Sunday, the Hye Votes Campaign was notified that imposters
have been contacting Armenian American voters in the name of the
Armenian National Committee of America – Western Region and the Hye
Votes campaign, encouraging them not to vote for ANCA-WR Endorsed
candidate for the 43rd Assembly District, Greg Krikorian.

“The only possible beneficiary of these phone calls would be Assembly
member and candidate for the 43rd Assembly District, Mr. Mike Gatto.

Given his track record full of dirty campaign tactics and his recent
sham of using the Republican Brand to fool voters, we would not
be surprised if his campaign were involved in a last minute scam to
confuse Armenian-American voters,” stated Hye Votes Campaign Director,
Elen Asatryan. “The Hye Votes campaign will be investigating the
phone numbers associated with these phone calls in the coming days,”
added Asatryan.

The Armenian National Committee of America – Western Region affirms
its full endorsement of Mr. Krikorian and requests that community
members who receive such calls to note the phone number of the caller
and contact the Hye Votes campaign immediately at 818.533.8683.

THE FRAMEWORK OF ARMENIA-EU COOPERATION HAS BEEN CONSIDERABLY EXPANDED. EDWARD NALBANDIAN

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 5, ARMENPRESS: Armenia highly evaluates the
continuous deepening of cooperation with European Union. This was
noted by Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian on November 5
during the sitting of NA Committee on European Integration and the
Financial and Budgetary Affairs.

“Recently the framework of Armenia-EU cooperation has been considerably
expanded. Our relations with EU are provided with high dynamic, the

visible progress in the negotiations on signing Armenia-EU agreement”
noted Nalbandian.

“The negotiations have been temporarily suspended in the 28 chapters of

and comprehensive free trade zone launched in June. There is already
a valuable progress in a result of the two phases; the negotiations
on visa regime facilitation have been already completed.

ANC REP.: EUROPE SKEPTICAL OF ARMENIA’S ANTI-CORRUPTION STRUGGLE

November 5, 2012 – 15:46 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – The secretary of Armenian National Congress (ANC)
opposition bloc believes an anti-corruption strategic program to be
a mockery against people and political forces.

As Aram Manukyan told a news conference in Yerevan, “if 10 years ago,
Armenia was 75th in the list of most corrupted states, now, the country
developing an anti-corruption strategic program dropped to 125th place.

“Armenian leadership is trying to mislead Europe; however, none of
the high-ranking European officials believes it. Struggle against
corruption, arrests of those guilty is a mere show-off,” Aram
Manukyan said.

ISTANBUL: `Adnan Menderes not initiator of 1955 pogrom’

Today’s Zaman, Turkey

`Adnan Menderes not initiator of 1955 pogrom’

4 November 2012 / HÃ`SEYİN KELEÅ? , İSTANBUL

A witness of the Sept. 6-7, 1955 pogrom against non-Muslims in
İstanbul has shared his memories of the circumstances surrounding the
violence, saying that Adnan Menderes, a former prime minister who was
executed by a junta that came to power in the1960 coup d’état, was not
the one responsible for the bloodshed as is sometimes claimed.

Mıgır Bilir, 86, is a former athlete who is of Armenian origin. He has
been living in Argentina for more than 50 years and is one of the
aggrieved people of the 1955 pogroms when many bloody provocations in
Turkey targeted non-Muslims. He shared the same destiny with many
Armenian and Rum people (Greeks who live on Turkish soil) when his
storehouse was looted in İstanbul’s Eminönü district.

Now, Bilir has returned to Turkey for the second time after a visit in
1970 and shared his memories of the pogrom with Sunday’s Zaman.

`I heard that my country has developed in terms of liberty, which made
me very happy. I felt terrible when I had to leave my country since I
was born and grew up here, collecting many memories, sometimes good
and sometimes bad.’ Bilir had many difficulties after he was obliged
to leave Turkey. `After going to Germany, France and Brazil, I finally
settled down in Argentina,’ Bilir said.

On the day of the pogrom, Bilir was unaware of what was happening
until he turned on the television. `I found my storehouse had been
looted when I went there after I saw the news about the pogrom on
television. All of the workplaces were in a terrible situation like a
battle zone. We did not know what to do in that situation. I still
remember those days with great grief.’

Bilir further stated that he does not hold Muslims responsible for the
pogrom, saying that he tells people proudly that he is from Turkey.
`All of my close friends are Muslims, and I know those bloody actions
against us were not at the hands of Muslims. I don’t have any
resentment against anyone in this country,’ added Bilir.

Adnan Menderes — the prime minister at the time of the May 27, 1960
coup d’état who was hanged along with two of his ministers by the
junta after the military intervention — was seen as the person
responsible for the incidents that took place in 1955. Menderes has
been accused of having full knowledge of the events as they were
planned but not taking any measures to prevent the attacks on
non-Muslims. The workplaces belonging to non-Muslims were marked by
unknown people and looted according to those marks during the pogrom.

According to court records, 4,214 residences, 1,004 shops, 73
churches, one synagogue, two monasteries, 26 schools and 5,317 other
buildings including factories, hotels, bars and such were attacked in
İstanbul. Martial law was declared at night in an attempt to quell the
unrest, though in some areas the attacks continued for several days.
Some of the perpetrators were arrested and prosecuted in closed
military trials, but many suspects had been released by the end of
1956.

Bilir strongly denied the accusations against Menderes, saying that
Menderes greatly valued minorities. `The Republican People’s Party
[CHP] and İsmet İnönü provoked people in a way at that time. They
plotted against Menderes with the countless television and radio
broadcasts. When I heard about Menderes’ situation after the coup
d’état I felt terribly sorry for him. All the Armenians like me had to
leave our country due to excessive pressure on us exerted by İnönü and
the CHP.’

With the help of a dialogue foundation in Argentina he found the place
where he was born in Ordu and found his cousin there. `When I saw him
I burst into tears, we talked about our good memories. I will never
forget my 25-day visit in Turkey. I hope to visit my country or settle
permanently here again before I die,’ Bilir added.

Bilir didn’t lose connection with Turkey thanks to Turkish schools

Recognized internationally for their success and the quality of
education they provide, Turkish schools have been opened abroad by
volunteer teachers in more than 100 countries. Bilir described meeting
the Turkish teachers as one of the milestones in his life. `I came
across the Turkish teachers, who were in Argentina to open a new
school, at the Turkish Embassy eight years ago. We helped them in
learning the language of the country and hosted them in our homes
until they found a place to live. We became close friends over time.
Every week, Turkish people hold meetings at the cultural center with
Armenians who migrated to Argentina from Turkey.’

Turkish schools came into prominence in Argentina like in other
countries due to their successful programs. Bilir stated that the
education level in Turkish schools is higher then in the other schools
in Argentina. `Many top executives enroll their children in Turkish
schools due to their devoted teachers and modern education facilities.
I suggest all people send their children to these schools,’ added
Bilir.

Questions roil Armenian Genocide compensation fund

Questions roil Armenian Genocide compensation fund

Man says $574,000 was deposited in account opened in his name.

By Mark Kellam, [email protected]

November 3, 2012 | 12:00 p.m.
More than $1.6 million has been paid out from a compensation fund for
descents of Armenian Genocide victims, according to a status report
filed in a lengthy lawsuit in U.S. District Court.

However, four of the 32 claimants who haven’t been paid have died and
attorneys are seeking direction from U.S. District Judge Christina
Snyder about whether their families – who have verified their lineage
to the descendants – should be paid the funds instead.

Snyder is also being asked to order banks that handled past
transactions from the Axa S.A. insurance settlement fund to check
various forms to see if any fraudulent transactions have occurred. The
request follows some questionable financial activities regarding
compensation funds in the past.

The lawsuit stems from allegations made by Glendale-based attorney
Vartkes Yeghiayan that there were accounting discrepancies in the fund
set up by the French insurer. He has requested an audit of all 3,000
claims.

The accounting firm of Holthouse, Carlin and Van Tright has been
handling the payment of about $2.1 million to 159 claimants. About 75%
of the funding has been paid out so far, according to the status
report.

However, 28 of the 32 remaining claimants have not responded to
multiple attempts by the accounting firm to contact them.

In a past status report, concerns were raised about 17 checks totaling
more than $312,000 that were made payable to compensation claimants,
but appear to have been endorsed by Los Angeles attorney Berj Boyajian
and deposited into an account called Boyajian and Associates at Union
Bank.

Boyajian wrote checks totaling $118,127 to various individuals from
insurance settlement funds that he had deposited into his Union Bank
account, but Boyajian allegedly kept the remaining $194,166 until last
June, according to the status report filed in federal district court.

On June 28, shortly after the previous status report was filed
outlining the suspicious check endorsements by Boyajian, a check for
$194,166 was written from an account for Boyajian’s legal counsel and
deposited into the Axa settlement account, the report states.

Boyajian doesn’t deny the transactions and his attorney submitted
documentation under oath affirming them.

The report also states that Boyajian, citing his Fifth Amendment
rights, refused to answer significant questions during a deposition in
the case.

However, Glendale resident Parsegh Kartalian, the compensation fund’s
administrator, testified in a deposition that he did not know how
Boyajian got ahold of the claimant’s checks, that Boyajian had no role
in the administration of the claims and that he had nothing to do with
deciding which claims would be approved or denied, according to the
status report.

Insurance fund `claimant’ Zaven Haleblian testified during a
deposition that nine settlement checks made payable to him totaled
$574,425 – which is the same amount that was in an account in his name
at First California Bank, an account he knew nothing about until last
April that allegedly was opened by Boyajian, according to the status
report filed with the court.

Haleblian said he never submitted a claim for settlement funds and had
no relatives involved in the Armenian Genocide.

He said he did grant Boyajian power of attorney to manage his account
at Pacific Western Bank because he lives in Syria most of the year.
However, Boyajian’s power-of-attorney responsibilities did not include
opening bank accounts, according to the status report.

After Haleblian’s deposition, Boyajian returned all of the money from
the First California account into the Axa settlement fund, the report
states.

Threat to close Holy Sepulchre over water dispute

Threat to close Holy Sepulchre over water dispute

JERUSALEM, Nov 2 2012

A dispute with an Israeli water company over unpaid bills has led to a
Greek Orthodox threat to close Christianity’s holiest site, the Church
of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

Maariv newspaper reported on Friday that the Hagihon water company
said it is was owed 9 million shekels ($2.1 million) in unpaid bills
dating back decades.

In protest, the Greek Orthodox patriarchate, a joint custodian of the
church, has threatened to close the Holy Sepulchre, said to be the
site of Jesus’s crucifixion and resurrection.

Any such measure, however, would need the agreement of the Catholic
and Armenian churches, which are co-custodians.

The Greek Orthodox Church contends that the Holy Sepulchre was always
treated as a special case and exempted from water fees, unlike other
churches in the Holy Land.

Its bank accounts have been blocked because of the dispute, according
to Maariv, leaving the church unable to pay its priests or expenses,
including electricity and telephone bills.

“Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophilos III has spoken (to church
officials) about taking measures… in protest at Israeli actions
against the church,” said Dimitri Diliani, president of the National
Christian Coalition in the Holy Land.

“He is consulting with the heads of churches to take the drastic
measure of shutting down the Church of the Holy Sepulchre,” Diliani, a
Greek Orthodox Palestinian, told AFP.

“It’s not a matter of money, it’s a change in the status quo that has
protected the church for hundreds of years, it’s a way to pressure the
churches and to introduce new Israeli-designed measures,” said
Diliani.

Maariv said the Greek Orthodox Church has written to Israel’s Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres in protest.

11:20, November 3, 2012

On November 2, the Lori Regional Court decided to shelve the slander
suit filed by Tereza Shahverdyan against Hetq reporter Adrineh
Torosyan.

In its decision, the court ordered Shahverdyan (photo) to pay Torosyan
185,000 AMD for incurred legal fees.

Shahverdyan had originally sued the Hetq reporter for a May 13, 2011
article entitled `Unhealthy Passions at the Vanadzor Pedagogical
Institute’.

In her original suit, Shahverdyan had also demanded Hetq publish a
retraction of the alleged slanderous passages in the article.

As the trial progressed, Tereza Shahverdyan had dropped her 2 million
AMD compensation demand of Hetq reporter Andrineh Torosyan to 200,000
AMD.

On October 24, 2012, one hour before the start of the latest trial
session, the court informed the reporter that Shahverdyan had dropped
the charges altogether.
