NEW BOOK BY TURKISH AUTHOR IS ABOUT ARMENIANS, GREEKS AND JEWS FROM ISTANBUL

YEREVAN, DECEMBER 7, ARMENPRESS. A book dedicated to the role of
the Christians in Istanbul has been published in Turkey. As reports
“Armenpress” citing Turkish Sondakika.com, book entitled “Kalimera
Fener Å~^alom Balat” (“Good Day Fener, Good Day Balat”) by Mustafa
Yoker is a unique journey telling about the life of the last period of
“cosmopolite” life of non-Muslim districts of Istanbul.

In his book the author is telling about Greek Fener and Jewish Balat
districts. In spite of the absence of clear dividing lines everybody
knew where the non-Muslim districts started and ended. Also Mustafa
Yoker states that each district had its unique cultural and social
peculiarities.

Among other things the author states: “It’s a pity that non-Muslims
â~@~S Armenians, Greeks, and Jews, who played a significant role in
the cultural life of Istanbul, suffered injustice and left the city,
or it would be true to say they were forced to leave the city because
of “the policy of turkization” adopted by the Government.”

MEMBERS OF CONGRESS CELEBRATE ANNIVERSARY OF ARTSAKH INDEPENDENCE

On Dec. 5,U.S.legislators joined on Capitol Hill with the Nagorno
Karabakh Republic’s Foreign Minister, Karen Mirzoyan, in a spirited,
standing-room-only celebration of Artsakh’s independence and democratic
development, the Armenian Weekly reports.

“We were pleased to join this evening with so many friends of
freedom-in Congress, among our coalition partners, and from our
community – who know that the blessings of liberty belong to the free
people of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic and to all nations,” said
ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian. “We look forward to building
on the enthusiasm of this evening’s Capitol Hill celebration, and
to expanding upon the unprecedented bipartisan support for Artsakh’s
security and continued economic and democratic development.”

The program, held in the historic Russell Senate Office Building,
was hosted by the Armenian Caucus, which is co-chaired by Congressman
Ed Royce (R-Calif.), the incoming Chairman of the influential Foreign
Affairs Committee, and Congressman Frank Pallone (D-N.J.).

Representative Pallone served as the evening’s master of ceremonies.

Among the legislators offering powerful statements at the event in
support for Nagorno Karabakh were Senator Jack Reed (D-R.I.), and
Representatives Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), David Cicilline (D-R.I.),
and Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.), the incoming Ranking Member of the Foreign
Affairs Committee.

Representatives Jeff Denham (R-Calif.) and Linda Sanchez (D-Calif.)
participated in the program, meeting with Minister Mirzayan and joining
in the celebration of Artsakh’s independence. Senator Robert Menendez
(D-N.J.) and Representative Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) shared powerful
statements of support for Nagorno Karabakh.

A central theme throughout the evening was the broad-based condemnation
of the Azerbaijani government’s praise, pardon, and promotion of
convicted axe-murderer Ramil Safarov as an action that was manifestly
unjust, incited anti-Armenian hatred, and moved the region closer
to conflict and renewed Azerbaijani aggression. Members of Congress
cited Karabakh’s democratic and economic progress, even in the face of
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s continuing belligerence, noting
the overwhelmingly positive assessment of the July 2012 presidential
elections. Legislators also discussed the need for continuedU.S.support
for Karabakh’s self-determination, through, among other things,
expanded humanitarian and developmental assistance to Artsakh.

Poignant remarks were offered by Mrs. Anna Astvatsaturian Turcotte,
author of “Nowhere: A Story of Exile,” who detailed the Azerbaijani
pogroms against her and other Armenians inBaku-which led to the
forced exodus of that centuries old population. Turcotte cited the
anti-Armenian massacres that began in 1988 and the ongoing intolerance
faced by the few Armenians left inAzerbaijanas among the most powerful
reasons to continue the fight for justice and self-determination for
the people of Artsakh.

A highlight of the evening was the ceremony, conducted by the
Ambassador of Armenia, bestowing theRepublicofArmenia’s “Mkhitar Gosh”
award upon Congresswoman Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.) and Congressman Brad
Sherman (D-Calif.). Both offered moving words of appreciation and
reaffirmed their support for the democratic aspirations of the people
ofArmeniaand Artsakh. In addition to the “Mkhitar Gosh” Award, Nagorno
Karabakh Republic Foreign Minister Karen Mirzoyan offered both Rep.

Eshoo and Rep. Sherman a medal in honor of Artsakh’s independence.

After a strong and far-reaching pro-Artsakh statement by Armenia’s
Ambassador Tatoul Markarian, and warm words of introduction by Nagorno
Karabakh Representative Robert Avetisyan, the key note address of the
program was offered by Minister Mirzoyan, who, in a moving speech,
voiced his appreciation to the U.S. Congress for its ongoing support
for the developing nation, and underscored both his government’s and
his people’s commitment to democracy and freedom.

Also offering comments on the challenges facing Artsakh and the
region was the highly-regarded former U.S. Ambassador toArmenia,
John Marshall Evans.

CURRENTLY BUILT BUILDINGS MORE SEISMICALLY RESISTANT, SPECIALIST SAYS

The quality of the buildings built today in Armenia is higher than
of the soviet years despite the flaws registered in the construction
works, director of Emergency Situations Ministry’s Northern Survey
for Seismic Protection of Armenia, Sergey Nazaretyan said.

“Beside constructors, a person who will control the quality of the
construction should be present at the construction site. But today
it is difficult to say how it is being implemented. The best quality
buildings built today in Armenia are the ones funded by the Lincy
Foundation,” he told the reporters on the eve of the 24th anniversary
of 1988 devastating earthquake.

The specialist also said that the high-storeyed buildings are more
seismically resistant if all the safety norms are preserved during
their construction.

“I think we should stop building high-storeyed buildings as we do not
have that culture. For instance in Turkey 50-80 storeyed buildings are
being built but with completely other methods which we do not have,”
he explained.

Nazaretyan said the majority of today’s schools were built during
the soviet years and are not highly seismically resistant.

“The schools are vulnerable today. 2,000 children were killed in
schools in Gyumri as a result of the earthquake. About 40 schools
have been fortified, the rest will be too gradually,” he said.

The specialist also noted that the main reason of collapse of the
buildings during the earthquake is human factor with people removing
the main pillars, digging cellars, weakening the building’s seismic
resistance.

“This circumstance also played a role during the 1988 earthquake as
people have made impermissible changes while reconstructing their
houses. I urge everyone to consult with specialists before making
essential changes, otherwise they endanger their lives and the lives
of others,” he said.

MP: BAKU’S HOSTILE ATTITUDE ADVERSELY AFFECTS ITS IMAGE

PanARMENIAN.Net – Azerbaijan’s increased hostile attitude adversely
affects the country itself, Orinats Yerkir parliamentary group
member said.

“Armenian lobby is considered one of the most effective ones in the
world. However, Turkey and Azerbaijan have adopted a different stance
on Europe. The number of both Turks and Azerbaijanis continues rising
in European countries, that are also home to Armenian communities,”
Mher Shahgeldyan told a press conference, adding that France currently
deems Armenia a close partner, particularly in terms of the bill
criminalizing Genocide denial.

Dwelling on Armenian-Turkish protocols, the MP said, “the ball is in
Turkey’s field.”

ROCA: TSARUKYAN COULD BE EXCELLENT CANDIDATE

On December 5 the visit of the delegation of the Prosperous Armenia
Party led by its leader Gagik Tsarukyan to Brussels kicked off. During
his meeting with the deputy president of the European Parliament Alejo
Vidal-Quadras Roca, Gagik Tsarukyan said the PAP wants to deepen its
relations with the European parties because EU integration is one of
the priorities of the PAP.

The PAP leader said it is impossible to fight corruption in a
country ruled by the most corrupt officials. The sides touched upon
the upcoming presidential election. Alejo Vidal-Quadras Roca said
Gagik Tsarukyan could be an excellent presidential candidate due to
his human and optimistic characteristics. At the end of the meeting
Gagik Tsarukyan invited the EU Vice President to visit Armenia.

On the same day the PAP members of parliament met with the co-chair of
the Euronest PA Christian Vigenin. Gagik Tsarukyan underlined that PAP
has always advocated few, fair, transparent and democratic elections.

The process of long-term and short-term observation missions of
European organizations was touched upon. Vigenin informed that the
observation missions will follow closely the domestic developments
during the presidential election.

The next meeting of the PAP president was with the president of
the Alliance of European Conservatives and Reformers Jan Zahradil,
the leader of the political group of the alliance in the European
Parliament Martin Callanan. Further cooperation between the parties
was discussed.

2,700 WORKERS OF ARMENIA’S RUBBER FACTORY ARE PAID ONE MONTH’S SALARY

YEREVAN. – One month’s salary for 2,700 employees of Armenia’s Nairit
Rubber Factory was paid on November 29, the factory’s head of press
service, Anush Harutyunyan, told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

But it is not known when the remaining ten months of wage will be
paid. “An operator needs to be found to operate Nairit,” Harutyunyan
said.

She informed that they have promised to pay one more month’s salary
no later than December 20.

Anush Harutyunyan did not say how much the total salary debt is,
but she informed that the fund for one month’s salary is $1 million.

To note, several hundred employees from Nairit Rubber Factory had
gathered across the Armenian Presidential Palace, on November 26,
demanding the payment of eleven month’s salary.

DEFENSE MINISTER DISTORTS FACTS, SAY PARENTS OF DECEASED SOLDIER

The family of the Armenian soldier, who died recently of an acute
blood disease, have accused the minister of defense of misrepresenting
facts concerning earlier promises to save their son.

In a statement, the parents of Arthur Kocharyan claim that Minister
Seyran Ohanyan distorted facts at a Wednesday news conference when he
said they did everything possible to assist in the soldier’s treatment.

“It is unacceptable for us that the agency, corrupt from top to
bottom, has embarked on a processes of washing the society’s brains,
together with its worthy chief, Seyran Ohanyan. They might have used
such a big enthusiasm for saving our son’s life. We also call upon
President Serzh Sargsyan to make necessary conclusions from the,”
say Koocharyan’s parents.

Kocharyan, who died in a Moscow hospital last Monday, was diagnosed
with the deadly disease ten months after enlistment. The disease was
claimed to have been detected with a month’s delay. The Ministry of
Defense had initially promised the to cover all the medical cost,
but after learning that the cheapest treatment – $67,000 – was
available in a Moscow clinic, they asked the family to find other
funding sources, saying that they can provide no more than $7,500,
the No Silence Group said in a statement last month.

The soldier’s parents have promised to hold a press conference in
Yerevan next week to raise the society’s awareness of what they claim
to be the true story.

cours des six premiers mois ses employes ont fait 20 propositions
pour ameliorer la production. Ces propositions ont ete faites selon
la philosophie Kaizen, la philosophie japonaise du lieu de travail,
qui a ete presentee a Armenal par la societe mère russe Rusal, le
plus grand producteur du monde d’aluminium.

Kaizen se concentre sur l’amelioration continue des processus dans
la fabrication, l’ingenierie et la gestion des affaires.

En 2011, les employes d’ArmenAl ont fait 360 propositions.

Armenal a concu 22 projets dans la première moitie de l’annee actuelle
avec une efficacite economique d’environ 80 000 $.

D’annonces ronflantes sur la construction de mosquees en reformes
discrètes du système educatif, le gouvernement islamo-conservateur
turc redouble d’efforts ces dernières semaines pour accroître la
visibilite de l’islam dans l’espace public.

Grand amateur de polemiques, le Premier ministre Recep Tayyip Erdogan
a mis les pieds dans le plat en confirmant mardi qu’une mosquee serait
edifiee sur la place Taksim, une des principales esplanades d’Istanbul
et l’enjeu de luttes anciennes entre islamistes et defenseurs de la
laïcite.

“Oui, cette mosquee sera construite”, a-t-il declare a des
journalistes dans son avion au cours d’une visite en Espagne, selon
plusieurs quotidiens.

Un pied de nez aux defenseurs de la laïcite, a commencer par l’armee
qui avait contraint le premier gouvernement islamiste de Turquie,
celui du Premier ministre Necmettin Erbakan, ancien mentor de M.

Erdogan, a la demission en 1997 après que celui-ci eut annonce son
projet de bâtir une mosquee a Taksim.

Mais l’armee, autrefois gardienne sourcilleuse de la laïcite et
responsables de quatre coups d’Etat en un demi-siècle, a vu ses
pouvoirs rognes par diverses reformes et ses elements les plus
hostiles au gouvernement du Parti de la justice et du developpement
(AKP) emprisonnes pour des projets de complots.

M. Erdogan s’est egalement rejoui de l’edification prochaine d’une
gigantesque mosquee, d’une capacite de 30.000 places et dont le plan
sera probablement inspire de la Mosquee bleue de l’architecte ottoman
Sinan, sur la plus haute colline d’Istanbul, Camlica, d’où elle
surplombera le detroit du Bosphore.

“Nous pensons proceder a l’appel d’offres d’ici la fin de l’annee”,
a-t-il indique.

Le gouvernement a egalement progresse sur un autre terrain
d’affrontement traditionnel entre religieux et laïcs : l’enseignement,
avec l’introduction limitee du foulard islamique dans les ecoles.

Mardi, le journal officiel a publie une nouvelle reglementation
decidee en conseil des ministres mettant fin au port de l’uniforme
dans l’enseignement primaire et secondaire.

Incidemment, la reforme prevoit que les jeunes filles pourront si
elles le souhaitent porter le voile en cours de religion, une
première, qui fait suite a l’annonce la semaine precedente de
l’introduction de tels cours de religion optionnels dans les ecoles
militaires.

“Arrière-pensee politique”

La nouvelle reglementation fait bien sûr grincer des dents dans le camp laïc.

“Quand l’AKP fait quelque chose, il y a toujours une arrière-pensee
politique (…) Le fait de permettre le port du voile a une ecolière
va conduire un peu plus tard a lui imposer ce voile par des pressions
sociales”, a declare a l’AFP Oguz Kaan Salici, responsable pour
Istanbul du Parti republicain du peuple (CHP), la principale formation
d’opposition.

Pour autant, ce responsable politique rechigne a invoquer le spectre
d’un islamisme triomphant, et denonce plutôt une instrumentalisation
de la religion par l’AKP a des fins electoralistes, alors que la
Turquie se prepare a des elections municipales et presidentielle en
2014, puis legislatives en 2015.

“Il n’ont pas d’autre objectif que de polariser d’avantage la
population (entre defenseurs de la liberte religieuse et laïcs) pour
consolider leur base electorale”, estime-t-il.

Les observateurs s’accordent a penser en effet que les prises de
positions de l’armee contre l’AKP sur la question de la laïcite ont
contribue au large succès de ce dernier lors des legislatives de 2007.

Jean-Francois Perouse, directeur de l’Institut francais d’etudes
anatoliennes (IFEA) d’Istanbul est lui aussi convaincu que les
dernières annonces de l’AKP, auxquelles s’ajoute l’ouverture recente
d’un debat sur la levee de l’interdiction des confreries religieuses,
relèvent d’avantage du pragmatisme que d’un dogmatisme religieux.

Outre les enjeux electoraux, “il y a dans cette acceleration des
references identitaires et religieuses une necessite de masquer
l’exclusion economique par l’inclusion symbolique, par l’activation du
lien religieux”, affirme le chercheur.

“L’AKP est de plus en plus un parti de patrons, qui ne cache pas son
culte de l’entreprise et du profit”, souligne-t-il, “cette position
pourrait lui aliener une grande partie de la population mais ce n’est
pas le cas grâce a l’inclusion religieuse.”

mon gouvernement ? ”

Au cours de notre recent voyage a Istanbul, nous avons voulu passer
quelques après- midi dans la cour de la Chapelle Armenienne Sourp
Prgitch ( Le Saint Redempteur) de Yedikule.

Des femmes d’Armenie qui etaient venues a Istanbul pour y travailler
venaient a l’eglise pour prier et allumer des cierges.

Nous nous asseyions sur un banc de la cour et ecoutions leurs
conversations tandis qu’elles en sortaient. On pouvait dire a leur
accent de quelle region d’Armenie elles etaient – le plus souvent
Gumri, Vanadzor ou Erevan.

Une femme qui etait venue a l’eglise ne pouvait retenir ses larmes.

Appelons la Silva. Elle s’assit a côte de nous et commenca a nous
raconter son histoire. ” Mon fils a vingt-quatre ans et il n’est pas
marie. Il est tombe malade dans un pays etranger et je ne peux pas
aller le voir. Je suis venue dans la maison de Dieu pour lui faire
une demande… ” Il se preoccupe de quoi, mon gouvernement ? Pourquoi
nous torture-t-il ainsi ? ” nous dit une Silva tremblante.

Son fils a ete envoye en Armenie pour y etre soigne mais Silva n’a
pas pu y retourner. Elle ne peut obtenir de visa parce qu’elle est en
Turquie illegalement. Il y a cinq ans, lorsque Silva a decide de se
rendre en Turquie, elle exploitait une terre agricole en Armenie. Les
taxes et les problèmes d’irrigation l’ont forcee a arreter et a
chercher des verts pâturages plus lointains.

” Ils disent, bon Dieu, elles sont allees en Turquie. Il n’y a
qu’a regarder ce qu’elles font en Turquie. Notre gouvernement en
Armenie nous jette dehors ou nous amène au bord du precipice. Il
nous demande soit de sauter, soit de mourir de faim. C’est a cause de
cela qu’aujourd’hui nous nous occupons de personnes âgees ou malades
dans d’autres pays que le nôtre. Afin de faire assez d’argent pour
continuer a vivre, ” dit Silva. Silva est employee dans une famille
turque – cuisine, nettoyage et prenant soin de la personne âgee.

Lorsque sa journee de travail est finie, Silva griffonne quelques
pensees et emotions dans un journal bien use. Elle l’a ouvert et a
commence a nous en lire quelques unes.

” Encore deux mois et demi avant que je puisse aller en Armenie.

J’espère pouvoir y emporter un peu d’argent pour payer mes dettes
et voir mon Armen. Je veux voir l’endroit où il effectue son service
militaire. Il est sur la frontière et j’ai peur pour mon Armen cheri.

” Je leur ai dit que je n’aimais pas les Turcs. Après cela nous nous
sommes querelles, mais peu m’importe. J’aime mes compatriotes, la
terre et l’eau d’Armenie. Mes enfants me manquent, mes je n’ai pas
le choix ; j’ai laisse mon pays provisoirement. Je retournerai dans
mon Armenie que je cheris ; ma petite mais fière Armenie. ”

” Je deviens irritable mais je dois etre patiente. Il ne reste que
deux mois. Mon Dieu, donnez moi la patience dont j’ai besoin. Vous etes
mon dernier espoir. ” Ces femmes d’Armenie, qui travaillent a present
dans les maisons des Turcs et dans les familles aisees armeniennes
d’Istanbul, n’en tirent aucun benefice. Elles se sentent utilisees,
trompees et surchargees de travail.

Une femme armenienne, Karineh, a change plusieurs fois d’emploi. Elle
dit qu’il n’est pas possible de travailler pour des gens qui insultent
votre dignite. ” Nous ne faisons finalement que les corvees et nous
occupons ensuite des malades et des vieux. Nous travaillons a la
fois pour les Armeniens d’Istanbul et les Turcs. Pour etre honnete,
les Armeniens d’ici sont plus durs avec nous que les Turcs. Vous
faîtes la cuisine, lavez la vaisselle, et nettoyez la maison. Et
lorsque vous vous asseyez ou soufflez deux minutes, on vous demande,
‘ et les vitres ? ‘ Oui c’est dur et vous ne pouvez pas toujours
satisfaire tout le monde.

La plupart des femmes a qui nous avons parle a Istanbul se sentent
insultees par l’intolerance a fleur de peau des Armeniens. En outre,
les Armeniens d’Istanbul croient que la difference essentielle entre
eux et ceux d’Armenie n’est qu’une affaire de culture. ” Ce que nous
trouvons de plus insultant, c’est qu’en depit du fait que nous sommes
tous des Armeniens, ils se comportent en telle sorte que nous sommes
forces de les quitter. Ils ne nous donnent meme pas une journee de
repos. Ils nous accordent juste deux heures pour aller telephoner a
nos parents en Armenie. Ensuite, c’est le retour a la tâche.

Pensez-vous que nous serions venues ici s’il y avait de nouveau du
travail en Armenie ? Nous le faisons pour nos familles et pour nos
enfants, ” disent Karineh et son amie. La plupart des femmes qui ont
quitte l’Armenie pour la Turquie sont venues seules ; laissant leur
mari et leur famille derrière elles.

Elles sont livrees a elles-memes lorsqu’il s’agit de la survie
quotidienne a Istanbul. Elles ne semblent animees que par l’espoir
de retourner en Armenie un jour, pour se reunir avec ceux qu’elles
aiment et redevenir une mère pour leur famille.
