RICHARD HOVANNISIAN TO LECTURE ON SMYRNA CATASTROPHE AT WESTERN DIOCESE

Professor Richard G. Hovannisian will present an illustrated lecture,
`The Smyrna Catastrophe, 1922-2012,’ on Thursday, January 31, 2013,
at 7:00 p.m., in the Zorayan Museum at the Western Diocese of the
Armenian Church, 3325 N. Glenoaks Blvd., Burbank, CA 91504. The
program will be held under the auspices of the Western Diocese, His
Eminence Abp. Hovnan Derderian, Primate, and with the co-sponsorship
of The Ararat-Eskijian Museum and the National Association for
Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR).

September 2012 marked the 90th anniversary of the Smyrna Catastrophe
when much of the city, the second largest in the Ottoman Empire, was
destroyed by fire during the final phase of the Greco-Turkish War. The
calamity marked the end of a strong Christian presence in the historic
Aegean coastal regions and turned hundreds of thousands of Greeks and
Armenians into refugees.

In this illustrated lecture, Prof. Richard Hovannisian will discuss the
important role of Smyrna (Izmir) in modern Armenian history and the
inferno that engulfed the city in September 1922. Hovannisian is the
editor of the recently published Armenian Smyrna/Izmir, the eleventh
volume of proceedings from the UCLA conference series `Historic
Armenian Cities and Provinces.’ He also traveled to Izmir and
environs in June 2012 as the historian-guide for a NAASR Armenian
Heritage Tour led by Armen Aroyan.

A book signing of Armenian Smyrna/Izmir will immediately follow the
lecture. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Richard Hovannisian is the author of Armenia on the Road to
Independence, the four-volume history The Republic of Armenia, and has
edited and contributed to more than twenty-five books including The
Armenian Genocide in Perspective; The Armenian People from Ancient to
Modern Times; Remembrance and Denial; Looking Backward, Moving Forward;
and The Armenian Genocide: Cultural and Ethical Legacies. Professor
Hovannisian was the first holder of the Armenian Educational Foundation
Chair in Modern Armenian History at UCLA and currently serves as
Distinguished Chancellor’s Fellow at Chapman University in
Orange County and Distinguished Visiting Lecturer at the University of
California, Irvine.

Veteran Turkish journalist Mehmet Ali Birand dies at age 71

Veteran Turkish journalist Mehmet Ali Birand dies at age 71

Mehmet Ali Birand (Photo: Today’s Zaman, Mine Çaha)

17 January 2013 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL,

Chairman of the Kanal D News Group and veteran journalist Mehmet Ali
Birand who advocated more freedoms and democracy in Turkey during a
career spanning 48 years, has died. He was 71.
His son Umur says Birand, who had cancer, died in İstanbul on Thursday
from an infection.

Birand began his career with Milliyet newspaper in 1964 but became
better known for a series of interviews and documentaries produced in
the 1980s. His books on Turkey’s EU membership bid, its military and
its intervention of Cyprus were translated into several languages.

Birand was among a number of liberal journalists who were fired by
their bosses in 1997 under pressure from the military, which also
toppled a pro-Islamic government.

Birand was taken to the American Hospital in İstanbul for an operation
to replace a stent in his gallbladder on Wednesday and was kept in
intensive care.

Birand, who covers political and diplomatic affairs, has been
practicing journalism in Turkey since the late 1970s. He interviewed
numerous world leaders in the late Cold War era, including
then-British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the late leader of the
Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) Yasser Arafat and Iraqi
dictator Saddam Hussein.

Birand’s program `32. Gün’ (32nd Day) became a brand name in news
broadcasting in the 1980s and trained many well-known TV journalists
in Turkey.

He also witnessed several key political developments abroad and at
home, including military coups, and he received harsh criticism from
the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) for his stance on the Kurdish issue in
the 1990s.

Birand likewise drew ire from secular circles when he confessed that
most Turkish seculars had been happy to see a military intervention on
Feb. 28, 1997, rather than live under a government led by a
conservative party.

Birand, a prominent journalist, columnist, anchor and above all an
investigative reporter, was born on Dec. 9, 1941, in İstanbul’s
BeyoÄ?lu district. The son of Mürvet and İzzet Birand, who were
originally from ElazıÄ? province, Birand was ethnically Kurdish.

He studied at Galatasaray High School and started his professional
career at the Milliyet daily in 1964. He worked briefly as the
editor-in-chief of Milliyet.

He wrote columns for the Sabah daily, and produced and presented the
program `32. Gün’ for the channels TRT and Show TV. He was also an
anchor for Show TV from 1992-1995. While a senior executive at the CNN
Türk channel, Birand was also presenting `32. Gün’ on Kanal D. Birand
spoke fluent French and English and was also a citizen of Belgium.

He was married and a father to Umur Ali.

Art: ‘Lionheart’ Hovhannisyan headed for Shobox showdown

Art ‘Lionheart’ Hovhannisyan headed for Shobox showdown

BY: Grant Gordon, Glendale News-Press, Calif.

Jan. 11–Thus far, Art “Lionheart” Hovhannisyan’s road to boxing glory
has been a bumpy one, slowed by a myriad of injuries and bout
cancellations.

Still, the action fighter with an unbeaten record finds himself poised
once more to knock down the door of opportunity and become a title
contender.

Hovhannisyan is slated to fight Logan McGuinness on Feb. 22 in a
“Shobox” main event with a possible World Boxing Assn. championship
bout as the winner’s prize.

“We cannot be fighting the Joe Schmoes anymore,” said George
Bastmajyan, Hovhannisyan’s manager and cut man. “We need a
career-defining fight. This is it.”

Hovhannisyan (15-0-2, eight knockouts) will face McGuinness (19-0-1,
nine KOs) in a 10-round super featherweight (130 pounds) bout at the
Morongo Casino in Cabazon.

According to Bastmajyan, by next week it should be determined by the
WBA if the bout will be a title eliminator for the right to face
champion Takashi Uchiyama.

Nonetheless, the bout is another step in the right direction to
contendership status for Hovhannisyan, a hard-charging fighter, whose
hard-training style and just some bad luck have led to a share of hand
injuries over the years for the 31-year-old Armenian native.

“This is the only direction we can go,” Bastmajyan said.

McGuinness, 27, is a Canadian native ranked fifth in the super
featherweight division by the WBA and also holds the North American
Boxing Assn. title. McGuinness will make just his second appearance in
a United States ring after a six-round draw in Connecticut in 2010.
Other than single bouts in Ireland and the United Kingdom, McGuinness’
fights have all been in Canada.

Trained by Edmond Tarverdyan at the Glendale Fighting Club,
Hovhannisyan most recently had his debut on HBO fall through. That was
coming on the heels of a split decision win over Miguel Acosta in July
of 2012. The Acosta bout was also on Showtime, as was a knockout
victory over the previously undefeated Archie Ray Marquez in June of
2011 that was likely Hovhannisyan’s most impressive performance to
date.

His camp is hoping, and confident, that changes against McGuinness.

“We are very confident,” Bastmajyan said. “Art is very confident.”

“We don’t overlook any opponents, but this should not be a problem for us.”

The bout begins a two-day span that will be monumental in the local
fighting scene and most notably for the GFC.

Tarverdyan, who’s been getting assistance with Hovhanissyan’s training
from former Glendale standout boxer William Abelyan, also trains
Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s bantamweight champion Ronda
Rousey and UFC featherweight fighter Manny Gamburyan.

The day after Hovhannisyan’s bout, Rousey will headline UFC 157 from
Anaheim when she faces Liz Carmouche in the first-ever UFC women’s
bout for Rousey’s title. On the same card, Gamburyan will take on Chad
Mendes in a matchup of former featherweight title contenders.

Bastmajyan also said GFC boxer Gapo Tolmajyan might also fight on the
Feb. 22 Showtime undercard.

So, for Hovhannisyan and his Glendale Fighting Club stablemates, the
last weekend of February may indeed be a weekend of career-defining
fights.

Azeri, Armenian NGOs launch joint website to promote dialogue

Non-governmental organizations in Azerbaijan and Armenia have created
a joint website to promote dialogue between the two countries,
Baku-based private Turan news agency reported on 29 December.

The website Publicdialogues.info was created by the Institute for
Peace and Democracy in Azerbaijan and Region Research Centre in
Armenia, Turan said, adding that the website was the “first of its
kind”.

The purpose of the website is to allow Armenians and Azerbaijanis to
receive first-hand information from the two countries, Turan said. The
news agency quoted Leyla Yunus, director of the Institute for Peace
and Democracy, as saying that the website will serve as a platform for
online discussions and press conferences for journalists, experts,
politicians, activists and representatives of civil society from the
two countries.

Since its creation, Publicdialogues.info has carried interviews on a
wide variety of topics, including the Karabakh conflict, human rights
issues, legislation, trade unions, cinematography and tourism. The
website will be presented in the Azerbaijani and Armenian capitals in
January, Turan news agency said, adding that it also has a page on
Facebook ().

The project is being supported by the British Foreign Office, the news
agency reported.
