Turkey emerging as a world power; Quietly slipping into prosperity

by: Matthew Fisher, The Windsor Star
ADANA, TURKEY

It is a great time to be in Turkey. Before the oppressive heat of
summer sets in, the countryside is a dazzling green and spring’s
promise is ubiquitous.

The explosive growth of China, India and, to a lesser extent Brazil,
have received far more global attention. But in its own way Turkey has
emerged as a powerhouse with tentacles reaching deep into Central
Asia, the Caucasus, the Balkans and the Middle East – re-establishing
traditional connections that ended with the collapse of the Ottoman
Empire during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

A brutal civil war rages interminably nearby in Syria. But here in
Adana the sense that the country’s agricultural heartland is on a roll
is almost as palpable as it is kilometres away in the thriving sprawls
of Istanbul and Ankara.

Turkey still counts on hordes of visitors who come for the sun and sea
and to marvel at the towering minarets and bazaars where Christendom
and Islam and Europe and Asia meet on the Bosphorus. But tourism and
farming are the old ways of surviving in Turkey. Its future can be
seen in the copies of the Financial Times that are being closely read
every morning by businessmen crowding the breakfast room at Adana’s
Hilton Hotel. An American engineer brought over to inspect boilers at
a group of factories to ensure they are world class told me this week
of his amazement at how Turkey had achieved so much with so little
buzz.

Only three years ago Turkey was experiencing an annual growth rate of
nine per cent. After more than a decade of phenomenal growth, that
figure dropped sharply to 2.2 per cent last year. Still, that
performance was considerably better than all the EU economies and
growth is touted to be a more robust four per cent this year.

Turkey has become Iraq’s largest trading partner since the wars there
have ebbed. Much of the money comes from oil and gas business
conducted with Iraq’s Kurds. This breakthrough may help to ease
tensions between Turks and the restive Kurdish minority.

Turkey has major energy plans of its own in the Black Sea and the
Mediterranean Sea and is aggressively seeking foreign help to build a
second nuclear power plant. Given the problems between Canada and the
U.S. over pipelines, Turkey has no qualms about building them to
enable its neighbours to export fuel and contribute to its prosperity.

Led by construction companies, which have become international
conglomerates, Turkey has huge and growing commercial interests in
energy-rich Central Asia. To promote its interests, the government has
celebrated the similarity between Turkish and the Turkic languages
spoken by tens of millions there. This long dormant historic
connection has permitted Turkish soap operas to develop a passionate
following in unexpected places such as Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan and
Kazakhstan.

Nothing better illustrates Turkey’s boom than the exploding route map
of Turkish Airlines. Like the Persian Gulf carriers, Turkey’s national
air-line has been merrily connecting Asian, Middle Eastern and
European destinations. In so doing, they have all cut deeply into the
business of carriers from Australasia and Europe.

But unlike its Gulf rivals, Turkish Airlines has a second lane. It has
become the biggest international gateway to southern Russia, Central
Asia and other remnants of the Soviet empire such as Moldova, Georgia
and Armenia.

The reach of the Turkish flag carrier – which has quadrupled the
number of passengers it has flown since 2003 and intends to soon have
the world’s biggest route network – now extends far beyond Europe and
Asia. Although not generally known in Canada, it flies five non-stop
flights a week between Istanbul and Toronto, to four American
destinations as well as to Brazil and daunting locales such as Libya,
Rwanda and Somalia.

Only this week the airline announced the purchase of 95 Boeing jets,
to go with 117 jets it bought from Airbus last month. This is far more
new aircraft than Air Canada has bought during the past decade.

Turkey’s success is ironic because the EU, led by France and Germany,
has continued to spurn its attempts to join the confederation because,
although nobody will say so, it does not want an Islamic country in
its club.

Having put Turkey off for years, the EU has embraced such economic
minnows as Romania and Bulgaria.

With the southern half of the EU, led by the country’s long-time foes
Greece and the Greek part of Cyprus, now requiring huge bailouts from
their European partners, it looks as if Turkey is having the last
laugh. Who needs whom?

Aram Manukyan: ANC’s potential is enough to rescue Yerevan from the
arms of the authorities

ARMINFO
Saturday, April 13, 13:57

The Armenian National Congress Party has enough potential to rescue
Yerevan from the arms of the authorities, Aram Manukyan, MP from ANC
faction, said at the Constituent Congress of the ANC Party, Saturday.

To recall, six parties and a union have submitted their party lists to
run to the Elders’ Council of Yerevan: Republican Party of Armenia,
Prosperous Party of Armenia, Orinats Yerkir, Armenian National
Congress, Mission, ARF Dashnaktsutyun, and “Barev Yerevan” Union.
Political parties will fight for 65 seats at the Elders’ Council. The
election campaign started on April 7. The elections will be held on
May 5. May 4 is a say of “silence” when campaign is prohibited. The
mayor will be the politician that tops the party list that will gain
majority of votes.

“Armenian Pan-National Movement Party joined the initiative to
establish the Armenian National Congress Party (ANC) and many
influential forces of ANC bloc followed it. Our party comprises also
non- party men members of the bloc. Therefore, the new ANC has
consolidated all those who have been fighting for independence,
restoration of the constitutional order in Armenia since 1988,”
Manukyan said. He recalled that young opposition activists having
their political views that are above their personal ambitions have
also joined the ANC Party. He said that 1813 people have already
applied for members of the ANC. Manukyan is sure that such activity
shows that it was a right decision to establish the ANC Party. The
party has enough potential to become a force able to dictate the
political agenda, Manukyan said.

The ANC Party Congress has commenced at the Sports and Concert Complex
after K. Demirchyan earlier today. Head of the ANC Parliamentary
Faction Levon Zurabyan says 1100 delegates have been invited to the
Congress, with the remaining are guests. The congress agenda
comprises such issues as approval of the ANC’s Regulations, programs,
election of the chairman and the Board, as well as the Supervisory
Committee. Representatives of the People’s Party of Armenia headed
by Stepan Demirchyan, Hnchakian Social Democratic Party led by Ludmila
Sargsyan, ARFD led by rmen Rustamyan and Prosperous Armenia Party led
by Stepan Margaryan have attended the event.

Vartan Oskanian: City should become self-sufficient

Saturday,
April 13

As part of their election campaign, a group of members of Prosperous
Armenia Party (BHK) together with Vartan Oskanian today planted trees
in the area adjacent to Surb Sargis Church in Nor Nork district of
Yerevan. Let us remind you that Oskanian heads the party list in the
May elections to Yerevan Council of Elders.

Oskanian then spoke to reporters, saying they give priority to
solution of the environmental problems of Yerevan such as air
pollution.

`In recent years, so many green areas were destroyed in the city and
so many buildings constructed that climate in Yerevan has changed. We
have much work to do,’ he noted.

`We should pay attention to solution of transport, water supply, and
garbage disposal problems, try to improve the city’s architectural
appearance, and cut the red tape in Yerevan’.

`The city should become self-sufficient, it is necessary to increase
its budget,’ Vartan Oskanian said.

According to him, today’s tree planting action is neither the first
nor the last one and there is no need to link it with the election
campaign only.

Ter-Petrosyan sees no `political process’ in Hovannisian’s movement,
dismisses accusations

POLITICS | 13.04.13 | 16:54

Former president and leader of an opposition bloc Levon Ter-Petrosyan
has stood by his view that the anti-government campaign launched by
another oppositionist Raffi Hovannisian in the wake of the disputed
presidential election has been devoid of `political process’.

He thus answered accusations made by Hovannisian the previous day that
Ter-Petrosyan and his Armenian National Congress (ANC) did not stand
by the people during the crunch time for the post-election protests
earlier this week.

Protesters led by Hovannisian were stopped by riot police during their
attempt to march towards the Presidential Palace on April 9, the day
when President Serzh Sargsyan was sworn in for a second term in
office.

Speaking at the founding congress of the ANC party in Yerevan on
Saturday Ter-Petrosyan reminded that he was the only opposition leader
to have explicitly recognized Hovannisian as the real winner of the
February 18 ballot. `At that was itself the biggest single support,’
he stressed, adding that most of the ANC’s rank-and-file activists
were also attending rallies and protests organized by the Hovannisian
team.

`Let everyone understand once and for all: we are a political party
and join and support solely political processes. During the current
post-election period we have seen everything but political processes,’
underscored Ter-Petrosyan.

The ANC leader, at the same time, emphasized that he still considered
opposition consolidation possible before or after next month’s
municipal elections in Yerevan, which he described as the only
possibility to try and achieve a power change in the country for the
time being.

US chides Azerbaijan over crackdown on free speech

US chides Azerbaijan over crackdown on free speech

12 April 2013

There has been a show of force on the streets of Baku this year

The US government has criticised Azerbaijan for acting against a
Western-funded pro-democracy project called the Free Thought
University.

US Ambassador Richard Morningstar met the pro-democracy activists and
said he was “troubled by the government’s reaction to protests this
year”.

The chief prosecutor linked the project to a youth movement called
N!DA, seven of whose members have been arrested.

The US ambassador condemned the arrest and interrogation of young activists.

“I was particularly disappointed to hear that authorities closed Free
Thought University’s office just last night,” he said, adding that as
“a friend of Azerbaijan” he wanted to see “government engagement with
citizens, especially its young citizens, to address their legitimate
concerns”.

The chief prosecutor’s office denied that the university had been
closed, but said its officers had seized documents from the project.

The university’s founders insist that it has “no affiliation with any
other organisation”.

Seven N!DA activists are being held on charges of possession of drugs
and firearms, which can incur a penalty of five to eight years’
imprisonment.

Local television broadcast confessional videos of the accused, who
said they had wanted to “cause trouble” and throw petrol bombs at the
police.

There have been several unusually big street protests in Azerbaijan
this year – an election year for President Ilham Aliyev. Human rights
groups have accused his government of stifling dissent and harassing
journalists.

Crowds in the capital Baku twice protested against a rise in
non-combat deaths in the army. They were dispersed by police using
baton charges and water cannon.

Senior members of the ruling party have sharply criticised youth
activists who organise on social networking sites, calling them
“radical” and “wayward”.

tour à tour la médaille d’or.

Représentant respectivement leur pays, le Liban, et l’Arménie par le
biais du club Homenetmen Beyrouth, Tvin s’est imposée en finale aux
dépens de l’Arméno-Suisse Astric Maradjian (3-0), empochant au passage
la médaille d’or, catégorie simple dames.
