April 18 2013

Yerevan /Mediamax/. The National Archive started creating an electronic
vault of Armenian Genocide victims’ names.

Director of Armenian National Archive Amatuni Virabyan said today that
about 200 000 victims’ names will be placed in the vault till 2015,
100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, Mediamax reports.

“We have more than 100 000 names 3 months after the start of the work
on the vault. Unfortunately, we are a bit late in terms of initiating
the process as almost all the people who survived the Genocide are
dead now”, said the Director of the Archive.

He added that not only the name of the killed person but his date
and place of birth will be available in the e-vault.

According to Amatuni Virabyan, toward the 100the anniversary of the
Armenian Genocide, the Archive will publish the 4th and 5th volumes of
the “Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Empire: Evidences of the Survived”
collection. The collected articles will be translated into English
and Turkish at the expense of the funds from the copies of the volumes.

Besides, the Archive initiated the creation of mono-stories of the
survived people. The Archive will also publish about 25 thousand
documents on the material and cultural losses of Armenians as a result
of the Genocide in the nearest future.

U.S. Ambassador: Prices Of Air Tickets To Armenia Are High

U.S. AMBASSADOR: PRICES OF AIR TICKETS TO ARMENIA ARE HIGH

Friday,
April 19

The prices of air tickets to Armenia are high, while services cannot
be called excellent, the U.S. Ambassador to Armenia John Heffern said
at the meeting with journalists today, when commenting on Armenia’s
tourism.

According to him, in order to come to Armenia, a traveler has either
to wait 15 hours in Vienna airport or spend two days in a plane. This
is the reason why tourists do not make trips to Armenia.

The ambassador stressed the need for positive changes in the country’s
civil aviation, which will lead to an increase of the number of
tourists.

Russian Guitarist: Armenia’S Mountains Emit Great Energy

RUSSIAN GUITARIST: ARMENIA’S MOUNTAINS EMIT GREAT ENERGY
Mаry Mamyan

15:26, April 19, 2013

“It’s necessary to present classical music to as wide an audience
as possible since many do not know what it is,” says the musician
Yekaterina Vasilyeva.

Yekaterina Vasilyeva came to Armenia to participate in the “Rebirth”
international competition-festival. She made it to the top list of
medal winners.

While the young guitarist is from Russia, she has lived in Sweden for
the past three years and represented that country in the competition.

She originally went to pursue her studies and wound up staying.

Her medal won in Armenia is her first major achievement, even though
she has participated in competitions in Russia and Sweden.

When I asked her what she found interesting about the competition in
Armenia, Yekaterina responded, “Armenia, the country”.

“I’ve always found it interesting to travel to old places, especially
to old cities (she refers to Gyumri). In addition, every musician
must constantly perfect their craft, by going to other countries and
entering various competitions,” she says.

Outside the festival, through which she’s made new friends, she was
taken by the warmth of Armenians and the mountains of Armenia, which
she describes as “transferring great energy”.

In Sweden, the guitarist performs solo and in two bands; one plays
Latin American tunes and the other is a trio consisting of guitar,
balalaika and flute that performs Russian folk music.

Yekaterina says Swedish audiences truly appreciate Russian folk
music, even to the point of singing along when the group performs
the much-loved tune Kalinka and others.

The guitarist confesses that she feels more unrestricted when playing
in Latin American style, but that she finds classical music much
more serious.

“My favourite is Bach. Playing any of his works is a science in
itself,” she says.

At the same time, Yekaterina believes that classical music, especially
performed on guitar, is gradually diminishing in popularity. She argues
that this is a result of the impact of TV, which mainly broadcasts
pop music.

Yekaterina says that classical music is being pushed aside even though
many aren’t familiar with it. She chalks this up to a lack of proper
promotion and argues that classical music must simply be presented
much more frequently to the masses.

ARF Urges To Take A Day Off Or Close Businesses On April 24

ARF URGES TO TAKE A DAY OFF OR CLOSE BUSINESSES ON APRIL 24

12:18 19.04.2013

The Armenian Revolutionary Federation Western US Central Committee
issued an appeal this week, urging community members to take the day
off or close their businesses on April 24 as a fitting gesture to
commemorate the 98th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, Asbarez
reports.

Below is the text of the appeal:

The Armenian Genocide anniversary is upon us and every Armenian,
once again, is preparing to honor the memory of the victims of this
heinous crime by attending commemoration events or protests and
expressing the commitment to our demands and the cause.

We are all mourners. We all have demands. While the struggle for
justice is a daily matter, for all of us April 24 remains the day
to honor the sacred memory of our martyrs. It is the day when we
appreciate the extent of our personal and collective losses and a
time when we must reevaluate our present and determine the course of
our struggle, in the name of justice and the restoration of our rights.

By taking a personal day from work or closing businesses on April
24 many people instinctively express their firm stance befitting our
national day of mourning.

However, some of our compatriots have veered from that tradition and,
just like any other day, they go to work and keep their businesses
open.

April 24 cannot be considered an ordinary day for any Armenian. Hence,
we call on our community to assume responsibility for our martyred
ancestors by closing their businesses and taking part in the day’s
commemorative events.

Hrant Bagratyan: No Economic Growth Under PM Sargsyan

HRANT BAGRATYAN: NO ECONOMIC GROWTH UNDER PM SARGSYAN

01:07, April 19, 2013

On hearing about the re-nomination of Tigran Sargsyan as RA Prime
Minister, Hrant Bagratyan, who formerly served in that capacity, has
jotted down his thoughts on his Facebook page. Here are a few excerpts.

I just heard about the re-nomination of Prime Minister Sargsyan.

Edward Sharmazanov said it was because he was able to achieve 7.2%
economic growth. Let me remind readers that a man has been re-nominated
during whose term in office economic growth has basically remained
the same rather than growing twice in five years.

As to the claim of 7.2% growth, that is a myth and below I repeat my
notes of April 12. I am ready to meet with Tigran Sargsyan and prove
it. It turns out that we can expect no future changes. In 2008, they
changed several people in government. I don’t understand, don’t they
have anyone else? Or is it just that they deride the opposition so?

But what about Armenia?
