People are sacrificed for well-being of ArmRosGazprom staff

Sunday,
May 19

ArmRosGazprom CJSC maintains high profitability, which is reflected in
the tariff of natural gas sold by the company, Chairman of the
Republican Union of Employers Gagik Makarian said at the meeting with
reporters today.

According to him, the people are sacrificed for the sake of well-being
of 4,000 employees of ArmRosGazprom Company. `The poverty level will
rise because of the gas price hike and more people will emigrate from
Armenia. The price hike will also hit small and medium businesses
whose profits range from 0% to 3%,’ the union chairman said.

He stressed that the staff of ArmRusGazprom have a special place in
Armenia in terms of their salaries, buildings, structures, and
recreational opportunities.

Speaking about repair work done by the company, G. Makarian said such
work is mostly done on their own structures, while gas pipelines in
provinces are old and ArmRosgazprom’s investments do not affect gas
pipelines and the caloric value of gas.

On

Eurovision 2013: Armenia places 18th in Denmark-dominated final

Eurovision 2013: Armenia places 18th in Denmark-dominated final

ARTS AND CULTURE | 19.05.13 | 09:54

Armenia finished in 18th place in the 26-nation Eurovision final on
its seventh appearance in Europe’s biggest pop music contest on
Saturday.

The winner of one of the world’s most-watched events on television
this year was betting agencies’ favorite Emmelie de Forest from
Denmark with her song `Only Teardrops’. The 20-year-old singer earned
281 points in a combined vote by viewers and national juries in 39
countries.

Azerbaijan’s Farid Mammadov (234 points) and Ukraine’s Zlata Ognevich
(214 points) finished second and third, respectively, at the Grand
Finale in Malmo, Sweden.

The Dorians rock back and its front man Gor Sujyan representing
Armenia scored a total of 41 points. The `Lonely Planet’ song
co-authored by renowned Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi won no top
marks for Dorians on the night. The highest Armenia earned was 10
points from Georgia. The other nations supporting Armenia’s entry were
Bulgaria (8 points), France (7 points), Ukraine (6 points), Hungary (3
points), Russia and Belarus (2 points each), Malta, Moldova and San
Marino (1 point each).

This is the second worst placing by Armenia since it began to send
participants to Eurovision contests in 2006. Emmy failed to qualify
for the final in 2011. The best result for the nation so far was
provided by Sirusho, who finished just outside the top three in 2008.

More information and results from this year’s song contest in Malmo
are available on Eurovision’s official website

The Former Liberty Soldier Does Not Want To See Troubled Faces Any M

THE FORMER LIBERTY SOLDIER DOES NOT WANT TO SEE TROUBLED FACES ANY MORE

Monday, 13 May 2013 15:28

When the May Day holidays approach, I rejoice at the celebration of
the victory though this victory is riddled with pain and grief as a
lot of worthy and patriotic friends of ours perished under our very
eyes. This victory was worth gaining so as to have so many children
born and so many weddings celebrated in our country. They witness
to the existence of our nation and to the day by day prosperity
of Artsakh,” former liberty soldier Margarita Taranyan shared her
feelings with us. 21 years ago her patriotism impelled her to join
the soldiers on the battle field, to overcome the feeling of fear
and to take the rifle however frightened of its deadly effects the
courageous Armenian girl so fragile inside was.

Margarita Taranyan was one of the few Armenian girls who were seized
with the idea of the movement of 88 and being courageous enough
stood next to the Armenian soldier and fought together with him on
the battle field knowing for sure that she may perish or be taken
hostage at any time.

>From the very beginning of the movement she intended to join the
soldiers but the idea was realized in 1992 when the homeland devotee
happened to notice an announcement in Stepanakert about the creation
of the “Detachment of Artsakh Women” where women and girls were
recruited. And as a teacher of the Armenian language and literature
she was well aware of the Armenian history and thus could not stay
indifferent to the announcement.

“The time of slogans had passed long ago, we were to get united and
follow the glorious sample of Shoushi. I wanted to be the direct
participant of all this though I knew t would be rather difficult
to convince my parents and everybody would interpret my decision in
their own ways, typical Armenian mentality, isn’t it? But the ideas of
homeland, roots and nation became dominant in my heart and I decided
to get recruited. First there were 25 of us in the detachment when
the trainings began. The tasks were difficult: civil protection,
communication, maps, physical training, they even made us dig
trenches with shovels. Not everybody could stand the hardships and
as a result soon 12 of us remained in the group,” the former liberty
soldier recalls.

After the trainings had been over Margarita Taranyan chose the nurse’s
profession because as she says she is not brave enough to kill the
enemy soldiers yet saving the Armenian soldiers’ lives is no less
heroic. But at the fate’s decree her first medical aid was provided
to a wounded Azerbaijani soldier who was brought in a cold winter
night but whom she treated with no less responsibility.

Today the vanguard soldier of the war recalling all this from the
distance of so many years says that in spite of all her doubts she,
however, considers the decision adopted in those days was right.

“I would like Artsakh citizens to live a better life. Our people
deserve to live life of dignity in a prosperous country. There are a
lot of post-war hardships and we must be united to overcome them so
as to make Artsakh a desirable place for all the Armenians to live in.”

The only thing Margarita Taranyan wants is to have no other war in
Artsakh, to see no more troubled faces when walking in town, only
smiles, joyful eyes and children living careless childhood.

THEY DON’T ALLOW FILMING THE COVERED MARKETPLACE; THEY SAY WE WILL BE CAUGHT (VIDEO)

A group of youths held a protest against illegal construction in the
Covered Marketplace outside the market today. Architect Pavil
Jangirov who joined them described what had happened to the market as
“architectural crime.” “Destructing such a monument is a crime.

They say that the monument is not being destructed, but the monument
comprises not just the facade, but the whole of it…. Now the
backside of the building is destructed; supposedly seven to eight
stories will be built in the backside. The construction should be
stopped and a professional plan should be developed, discussed, and
it should be decided what one should do with that building; it is
obvious that we have lost the monument.” Before the architect would
finish, women considering themselves former vendors of the Covered
Marketplace joined those gathered and asked those gathered where they
had been so far. “What monument have they ruined? They are building
one. Ugh, let them build. You have just been born; we know what is
what here. They are renovating. It wasn’t good when stones would
fall on children’s heads, now was it? They are renovating, it will
be a market, and we will come to work. There is no supermarket on the
territory; what harm will it do to have one?” She assured that the
market will operate after the renovation. “I heard say, I know that
when the market was being demolished we knew that there would be a
market. If we hadn’t known, we wouldn’t have left. I have worked in
the market for as long as 20 years.” Another woman who used to sell
greens in the backside of the market replaced her and also expressed
surprise at their protesting, complained that in the past when the
market had operated, and she would sell there, it had been full of
rats. She called for ceasing the protests, because the renovated
market would start to operate soon. While the video camera of
was shooting the backside of the market, some men
passed by and grumbled. One of them said that we shouldn’t shoot,
because we would be caught. In response to a question who he was,
whether he was the honcho, he said yes, but when he saw the camera he
said no and left, laughing. Details in the video Arpine SIMONYAN

SUPPORT TO RESIDENTS OF ARMAVIR INITIATIVE GROUP CALLS ON PEOPLE TO JOIN THEM AND HELP THE FARMERS OF HAIL-STRICKEN AREAS

14:40 ~U 17.05.13

Support to residents of Armavir initiative group has been established
to help the farmers of hail-stricken communities.

Speaking to reporters today, the head of the initiative Nare Grigoryan
said that on May 18 they are going to Armavir village and help the
farmers.

“We will depart on Saturday morning. People may go there on train,
mini-van… Let’s offer our help to the farmers, help them with the land
works. We will do what they want. Do not save these 500 drams and join
us,” she said.

She said almost a week has passed since the hail damaged the lands but
the government is not doing any real step. “Nothing is being done,
nothing is being initiated only the damages are being calculated and
it is done due to their interest. The government says they will send
fertilizers, seeds, but what seeds – sunflower, corn seeds but people
have lost grape, tomato, eggplant,” she said.

Nare Grigoryan noted that their goal is for the people to go and see
the disaster the farmers face and share their pain. “I was there and I
saw people’s pain. I was very excited. A person of 50, with eyes full
of tears, does not know what to do,” she said.

Russia Sends Warships To Patrol Waters Near Its Naval Base In Syria

RUSSIA SENDS WARSHIPS TO PATROL WATERS NEAR ITS NAVAL BASE IN SYRIA – THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

10:40 ~U 17.05.13

Russia has sent a dozen or more warships to patrol waters near its
naval base in Syria, a buildup that U.S. and European officials see
as a newly aggressive stance meant partly to warn the West and Israel
not to intervene in Syria’s bloody civil war, The WSJ reports.

Russia’s expanded presence in the eastern Mediterranean, which began
attracting U.S. officials’ notice three months ago, represents one
of its largest sustained naval deployments since the Cold War. While
Western officials say they don’t fear an impending conflict with
Russia’s aged fleet, the presence adds a new source of potential
danger in the region.

The Times Of Israel writes that undeterred by pleas and warnings
from Israel, Russia made clear on Thursday that it will go ahead with
its planned delivery of a highly sophisticated air-defense system to
Syria’s President Bashar Assad.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly warned Russian President
Vladimir Putin in an emergency face-to-face meeting on Tuesday that
Moscow’s sale of the S-300 missile defense system to Assad could push
the Middle East into war.
