Les corégones diminuent dans le lac Sevan

ARMENIE

ANKARA: Press Release regarding the monument to fallen diplomats to

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey
June 7 2013

PRESS RELEASE REGARDING THE MONUMENT TO FALLEN DIPLOMATS TO BE
UNVEILED IN LISBON.

A monument dedicated to the memory of Erkut Akbay, Administrative
Attache of the Turkish Embassy in Lisbon and his wife Nadide Akbay who
were killed in a terrorist attack in 1982, as well as to all diplomats
and government officials fallen while on duty abroad, will be unveiled
in Lisbon on June 7, 2013.

The unveiling of the monument to fallen diplomats coincides with the
31st anniversary of the atrocious attack against Erkut and Nadide
Akbay, for which a radical Armenian organization claimed
responsibility.

As can be recalled, some 13 months after the abovementioned attack,
Cahide MÄh ÄoÄŸlu, the wife of the Turkish Charge d’Affaires, was
martyred in another attack which targeted the residence of the Turkish
Embassy in Lisbon. A Portuguese police officer also lost his life
during this attack.

The monument is located at the junction opposite the family home,
where Administrative Attache Erkut Akbay and his wife Nadide Akbay
were attacked. The children of the deceased will attend the unveiling
ceremony of the monument.

The monument, which symbolizes a common stance against terrorism
regardless of its source, will bear witness to the principles of
peace, freedom and coexistence that are shared by Turkey and Portugal.

On this occasion, we once again mourn the loss of our fallen who were
treacherously murdered while serving their country with honor and who
held the love of their nation and their sense of duty above their own
lives.

ISTANBUL: Ankara upset at Vatican for pope’s remarks on mass killing

Ankara upset at Vatican for pope’s remarks on mass killings of Armenians

ANKARA

Turkey has reacted angrily to the Vatican following a statement from
Pope Francis describing the mass killings of Armenians during World
War I as “the first genocide of the twentieth century” during a
meeting with a delegation led by Patriarch of Cilicia of Armenian
Catholics on June 3.

“The Turkish Foreign Ministry delivered Turkey’s views on the issue
and expressed disappointment to the embassy in Ankara and Vatican in
Rome,” a Turkish diplomat told the Hürriyet Daily News on June 7.

Pope Francis described the mass killings of Armenians during World War
I as “the first genocide of the 20th century” during a meeting with a
delegation led by Patriarch of Cilicia of Armenian Catholics on June
3.

The pope met with members of the delegation and when one of them said
that she was a descendant of genocide victims, he replied, “The first
genocide of the 20th Century was that of the Armenians,” reiterating
his earlier recognition of the mass killings as “Armenian Genocide”
while he was the head of the Catholic Church in Buenos Aires as a
cardinal.

In 2006, during events marking the 91st anniversary of the killings in
Buenos Aires, he had urged Turkey to recognize “the genocide” as the
“gravest crime of Ottoman Turkey against the Armenian people and the
entire humanity.”

Commenting on the issue, Armenian Apostolic Church Diocese of Gougark
Bishop Sebouh Chuljyan Primate said, “The pope is speaking out a
historical truth. Turkey needs to see the pains and should face the
genocide,” he told the Hürriyet Daily News, adding that the archives
of the Vatican may be opened to investigate the issue further.

The director of the Armenian National Committee of South America,
Alfonso Tabakian, explained that this was the first such statement
from the pontiff since being elevated to pope and leader of the Roman
Catholic Church.

Tabakian called the statement “very important since his words
transcend any state or religion,” according to the Armenian weekly
website.

Sevil Küçükkoþum and Vercihan Ziflioðlu contributed this story.

Melkumyan halts Prasanna’s unbeaten run at Albena Chess –

Albena (Bulgaria): Vishnu Prasanna’s unbeaten run was halted by
Grandmaster Hrant Melkumyan of Armenia as the Indian suffered his
first defeat in the sixth round of Grand Europe Albena International
Chess Tournament.

Having completed the Grandmaster title in style earlier in the
tournament, Prasanna ran out of steam against Melkumyan. The loss
proved costly as Prasanna also lost his lead in the tournament and now
trails the leaders by a full point.

Meanwhile, Tigran Petrosian of Armenia defeated Sandro Mareco of
Argentina on the top board to move to 5.5 points. Giving him company
at the top are Melkumyan and Vladislav Nevednichy of Roumania who
defeated Evgeny Sveshnikov of Latvia.

The Indians had a mixed day as former world junior champion Abhijeet
Gupta first misplayed a won position and then struggled to a draw
against Alexej Gorbatov of Russia while Ashwin Jayaram got the same
result against Grandmaster Avetik Grigoryan of Armenia.

Anurag Mahamal got a good result too as he beat Petar Arnaudov of Bulgaria.

Sagar Shah did well to hold top seed Constantin Lupulescu of Romania
to a draw while Swapnil Dhopade improved his chances for a better
finish after defeating Nastassia Ziaziulkina of Belarus.

With just three rounds to come things, do not look very promising for
the Indians. Mahamal, Prasanna and Jayaram have 4.5 points apiece and
only these two have a theoretical chance of catching up with the
leading pack.

Among other Indians in the fray, Swapnil Dhopade has four points now
while Gupta and Shah have just 3.5 points from their six outings.
Gupta has to do well in the remaining three games otherwise he runs
the risk of losing important rating points. – See more at:

Azerbaijanis not believe in diplomatic resolution of Karabakh conflict – survey

News.az
Fri 07 June 2013 07:34 GMT | 9:34 Local Time

The public opinion polls in Azerbaijan and Armenia, parties to the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, have shown that in Azerbaijan, unlike
Armenia, a large part of the population does not believe the conflict
may be solved by peaceful means.
These are the summarized results of the survey “Caucasus Barometer”,
conducted by the Caucasus Research Resource Center in Armenia,
Azerbaijan and Georgia in 2009, 2011 and 2012, it was announced by
head of the Center Gursel Aliyev at a conference on Azerbaijan-EU
relation on Friday, 1news.az reports.

The polls also showed that both in Azerbaijan and in Armenia, people
have no idea how soon it is possible to achieve resolution to the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The poll results in Azerbaijan were much more optimistic: ¼ of
respondents believe that conflict resolution is possible within the
next 2-5 years.

In both countries, the majority of respondents consider that Russia
needs to engage in conflict resolution more closely. In Azerbaijan, a
large percentage of population wants to see Turkey as a mediator.
