PanARMENIAN.net claims that Egypt’s interim leader Adil Mansour pledges
recognition of a genocide in a statement he posted to a social media
account that is alleged to be belonging to Mansour.

World Bulletin/News Desk

Egypt’s interim leader Adly Mansour has tweeted that Egypt will
recognize the Armenian allegations regarding 1915 incidents, according
to an Armenia based web site.

PanARMENIAN.net claims that Mansour pledges recognition of a genocide
in a statement he posted to a social media account that is alleged
to be belonging to Egyptian interim President.

Mansour’s statement followed Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip
Erdogan’s remarks condemning the military coup in Egypt and accepting
Mohamed Morsi as the legitimate president of the country.

“Our representatives in the UN will sign an international document
recognizing the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey which led to the
deaths of millions,” the Coptic leader said according to the Armenian
web site, in the twitter account said to be of Mansour’s.

However, on the other hand, a statement by Egypt’s UN representation
said to AA correspondent that interim President Adly Mansour did not
have such a twitter account and they did not have any UN initiative
regarding the issue.

Mars Outshines Venus In South Caucasus Politics

MARS OUTSHINES VENUS IN SOUTH CAUCASUS POLITICS

EurasiaNet.org
Aug 20 2013

August 20, 2013 – 12:37pm, by Giorgi Lomsadze

To many, it may come as no surprise. Politics is a man’s world in the
South Caucasus, where women remain a legislative minority, according
to recent data from the World Bank.

The study showed that, regionally, Armenia has the lowest share
of female parliamentarians, at 11 percent of its 131-seat National
Assembly. Georgia comes next on the list with 12 percent, though the
2012 election marked a slight improvement. Azerbaijan is doing the
best, though the female presence in its 125-seat Milli Majlis still
stands at a modest 16 percent.

Azerbaijan is also doing better than Russia (14 percent), and, like
its Caucasian neighbors, far better than Ukraine, which, with women
accounting for nine percent of its 450-seat legislature, boasts the
most testosterone-heavy parliament among the former Soviet republics.

Many Azerbaijanis might say that their country comes naturally
by this regional first . While often socially conservative toward
the roles of women (public criticism of President Ilham Aliyev’s
wife, Mehriban Aliyeva, as an MP tends to be studiously avoided),
Azerbaijan, under its short-lived Azerbaijani Democratic Republic
(1918-1921), became the first predominantly Muslim country to give
women the vote.(The country has enjoyed less success in other areas
of women’s rights; according to the United Nations Population Fund,
violence against women has reached “epidemic proportions.”)

Still, the South Caucasus numbers on women in politics are nowhere
near European averages. Both Armenia and Georgia have introduced
affirmative action rules to ensure larger legislative representations
for women, but things do not always turn out as planned. At Armenia’s
last election, in 2012, quotas were meant to ensure a minimum-20
percent female representation in parliament, but only 14 women ended
up being elected.

Local observers place the blame both on men and traditional views
on gender roles. Armenian and Georgian men often tend to prefer to
have women legislate at home rather than in national assemblies,
while combining a political career with marriage and parenthood
can sometimes prove a tall order for local women, given cultural
stereotypes. “Political office is a pillar for business and men are
not ready to let go of such positions,” Elena Vardanian, chairperson
of the Armenian Public Council’s Committee for Gender and Demography,
told IWPR.

Some believe that the bare-knuckle style of regional politics also
discourages women from running for parliament — although, conceivably,
frustration with such antics could also play a role.

Parliamentarian Eliso Chapidze of Georgia’s ruling Georgian Dream
coalition noted that “some aggressive attitudes” do exist among male
MPs toward their female colleagues. “When men run short of arguments
and can’t fight intellect with intellect, they start saying that
women have other, family-related matters on their minds,” Chapidze
told Georgian Public Broadcasting.

Minority United National Movement member Tinatin Bokuchava agreed,
though, that “the unhealthy,” sometimes violent, practices in local
politics keeps women away. “Women don’t want to come to politics
because they know that they may even face physical violence,”
Bokuchava said.

In her comments to IWPR, a successful Armenia politician, Naira
Zarobian, of the Prosperous Armenia Party, advised Armenian women
to break away from the socially dictated gender roles and be more
assertive in politics. “First, we have to overcome our complexes,
and then we will demand gender equality from men,” she said.

Armenian Organized Crime Hijacking Tractor Trailers For … Food

ARMENIAN ORGANIZED CRIME HIJACKING TRACTOR TRAILERS FOR … FOOD

LA Weekly
Aug 20 2013

By Dennis Romero Tue., Aug. 20 2013 at 7:06 AM

If you thought hijacking trucks and trailers was a crime only seen
in East Coast gangster epics (Goodfellas, Sopranos), think again.

It’s happening right here in L.A., police say. And the target isn’t
alcohol, cigarettes or high-end electronics. It’s fresh produce!

And the suspects aren’t Italian at all. Forget about that. They’re
part of Armenian organized crime, says the LAPD.

The department says a series of these truck-trailer jackings was
uncovered when, on Aug. 13, cops discovered the warehouse where the
goods were allegedly being stored in the 12900 block of Saticoy Street
in North Hollywood.

Nothing too exotic was found, police say, just “shrimp, energy drinks
and various frozen foods.” Most of the goods had been reported stolen,
investigators said.

Did we fail to say, That’s gangsta!?

The LAPD says the bad guys here don’t use guns, force or Brooklyn
accents. Rather they roll up in big rigs and present “counterfeit
documentation in order to pick up cargo” and roll away with it in-tow.

Cops call the crime “fictitious pick-ups.” We call it ripping off food.

In any case, if you know something about this devious ring of
gastronomic Gs, detectives would love to hear from you: 818-832-7510.

Sydney: Is Diversity Making Bennelong Marginal?

IS DIVERSITY MAKING BENNELONG MARGINAL?

ABC Local, Australia
Aug 20 2013

By Danuta Kozaki

Posted 10 hours 47 minutes ago

The Federal seat of Bennelong on Sydney’s lower north shore is
classified as a marginal Liberal seat, currently held by a 3.1 per
cent margin by former tennis great John Alexander, who claimed the
seat back for the Liberal party in 2010.

Dr Richard Stanton, a senior lecturer of political communication at
Sydney University says the Chinese vote – which makes up 18 per cent
of the Bennelong electorate – was widely seen as a driving force
behind Labor’s Maxine McKew’s win in 2007.

Dr Stanton says Labor has parachuted in Chinese-Australian businessman,
Jason Yat-Sen Li, after its original candidate, Ryde Councillor Jeff
Salvestro-Martin, was disendorsed in mid-July due to allegations
before the Independent Commission Against Corruption.

Mr Salvestro-Martin says he was the victim of vexatious claims and
should have been allowed to continue in the race for Bennelong.

Dr Stanton says the introduction of a Chinese background candidate
has made the race interesting, as the Chinese community in Bennelong
is widely seen as very pragmatic.

“The real issue is do they go with the Labor party because of the
ethnic candidate, or do they look to the Liberal party because they
may be in government,” he said.

Mr Li says his Chinese background is important, but he is running
for the whole electorate.

“Look I think it’s helpful in some ways and its not helpful in other
ways,” he said.

“It’s helpful in the sense that people of Chinese background are very
supportive of having the first Chinese-Australian as a member of the
House of Representatives in this seat.

“It’s also been unhelpful in the sense that some people regard me as
a Chinese candidate, which is completely untrue given I was born and
raised in Sydney.”

Incumbent John Alexander says he has been working closely with both
the Chinese and Korean communities to involve them in sport, through
the setting up of a local table tennis program.

“The motivation for the table tennis in schools program came about
because we could see that there were students, Chinese and Korean
students, who weren’t participating with other students in what you
might call traditional Australian sports.”

Dr Stanton says Mr Alexander has been clever in counteracting Mr Li’s
appeal with his own strategies for the Asian vote.

“I think a number of tactics on the ground have worked for John
Alexander and will continue to work,” he said.

“One of them of course is having his electoral banners in Eastwood
and other places in Chinese and Korean, as well as in English.”

Melissa Monteiro from the Community Migrant Resource Centre office
in Eastwood says Bennelong is much more diverse than just the Chinese
and Korean communities, with a well-established Armenian population,
along with people from the Indian sub-continent, Iran and Afghanistan.

Vache Kahramanian from the Armenian National Committee of Australia
says the local Armenian community is very important in Bennelong.

“The Armenian community in Bennelong is the largest Armenian community
in Australia, and therefore Bennelong is a very important seat to
the Armenian community,” he said.

“The Armenian community represent about five per cent of the voting
population in that electorate.

“If we look back at the last election when the current member,
John Alexander, challenged the sitting member Maxine McKew, the
Armenian vote had a considerable influence in deciding the outcome
of that seat.”

Mr Kahramanian says many of those families have experience in fleeing
violence, and that could have an impact on their voting patterns.

“Many of those families are direct descendants of the Armenian
Genocide,” he said.

“Their grandparents or great-grandparents would either have been
killed or would have somehow survived and managed to flee and come
to Australia.”

Dr Stanton says history shows the longer a community is established
in Australia, the more conservative they can become.

“It depends whether the Armenian population again is a conservative
population or what you might call progressive,” he said.

“That conservatism comes into play second or third generation.

“So that may be the case with the Chinese and the Korean populations
or voters in Bennelong, but it also may be the case with the Armenians
that they may feel warmer to a Liberal conservative candidate than
they would to a Labor candidate.”

Dr Mark Rolfe, politics lecturer from the School of Social Sciences
at the University of New South Wales says the Liberal Party of New
South Wales has spent the last few years nurturing the so-called
ethnic vote in Bennelong.

“I think it points to a larger strategy by the NSW branch of the
Liberal party about multiculturalism and the attempt to build bridges
with various sections of the community,” he said.

“In particular, say, the Muslim community in western Sydney.

“But back to Bennelong, the Liberal party learnt that they need to
get involved at the grassroots of Bennelong, so in early 2010 they
formed the Liberal Party Chinese Council, in order to build bridges
with the Chinese community.”

Dr Rolfe says there has also been a reaction against the Labor party
on a New South Wales basis after all the corruption allegations.

“So I know that there was a big reaction against the NSW Labor
government in 2011, but I think the Liberals have been working at
both a federal and state level to consolidate the multicultural vote
in Bennelong,” he said.

Local Korean newspaper owner Jason Koh, who is also part of the
Korean Chamber of Commerce in Eastwood, Epping and Ryde says the
Korean community is just as interested as the broader community in
the economy, parking and law and order.

Mr Koh says it is a shame Labor’s candidate, Jason Li, has had such
a short time to get established.

“Bennelong Chinese vote roughly 18 per cent, Korean vote around an
estimated four per cent, so around 23 to 25 per cent which is quite
a big number,” he said.

“So if he is supported by a majority of Asian voters, he may have a
chance in general.

“We think it will be a very difficult fight for him, maybe three
years later may be different.”

Mr Alexander says Bennelong is unique.

“It is a very diverse community and I often think it’s interesting
that Bennelong was the first Aboriginal man to engage with the white
settlers,” he said.

“It’s so appropriate that this electorate would be named after him
when there’s such a mix of people from all around the world.”

Mr Li agrees, and says his vision for the area is to be like Silicon
Valley in America.

“I completely agree that Bennelong is a an extremely important seat,”
he said.

“It’s not just because of its ethnic mix, it’s because of the really
unique set of infrastructure that exists here such as Macquarie
University, Macquarie Park, the CSIRO and the range of professionals
and the make up of the population.”

Dr Stanton says Bennelong’s cultural diversity, with about a third of
its residents born in a non-English speaking country and the impact
of that ever-changing demographic, could make the seat a bell-weather
seat, changing with what voters believe to be the winning side.

“In the past, every election campaign has been won and lost in
Eden-Monaro,” he said.

“That’s a distinctly different seat with a high country population
and a coastal population, which has changed radically over the last
few years.

“So Bennelong could in fact become a bellwether seat.”

from the village I used to stay in and raped me for three days . . .”

tells the journalist.

Darya Aslamova is famous in Russia for her interviews with well-known
people, from Arab sheikhs to Russian oligarchs. Aslamova is known
as number one Russian journalist on war reporting. She has recently
been visiting Turkey and publishing articles about Fethullah Gulen,
the leader of the religious movement of “gulenists.” The comparison of
Gulen with Soros in Russian journalist’s article has caused a public

Azerbaijani Official’s Response Hardly Adequate – Artak Apitonian

AZERBAIJANI OFFICIAL’S RESPONSE HARDLY ADEQUATE – ARTAK APITONIAN

19:55 20.08.13

Artak Apitonian, Head of the External Relations Department, RA
Presidential Office, has commented on his Azerbaijani counterpart
Novruz Mammadov’s response to Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan’s
statement on the forthcoming presidential election in Azerbaijan.

“I think Mr Mammadov’s response is hardly adequate, which may be the
result of a nervous atmosphere within Azerbaijan’s ruling circles,”
he said.

This is a poorly concealed complex of drawing comparisons with Armenia
and Armenians, he added.

At the closing ceremony of the Baze-2013 all-Armenian gathering last
Saturday, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan stated that Azerbaijan’s
incumbent President Ilham Aliyev’s victory in the forthcoming
presidential election in that country would be the best option for
Armenia.

Mammadov immediately responded to the Armenian leader’s statement.

Azerbaijan’s president does not need Serzh Sargsyan’s support. He
is supported by such world leaders as US President Barack Obama and
Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Russia Treats Armenia Like Jealous Spouse – Opinion

RUSSIA TREATS ARMENIA LIKE JEALOUS SPOUSE – OPINION

14:20 20.08.13

The Russian concerns over the Armenian authorities’ simultaneous
efforts towards joining EU and the Eurasian Union are absolutely
unfounded, according to an Armenian politician.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, a secretary of the opposition
Heritage party, Styopa Safaryan, said the country’s concerns and fears
over Armenia’s EU integration processes is comparable to nothing more
than a vain jealousy scene between spouses.

Safaryan noted that ahead of the Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius,
it is becoming more and more obvious that the discourse has developed
in Armenia over the recent years. “A certain tension is being observed
in the Armenian-Russian relations; the Russian Azerbaijani cooperation
[over the weapons’ trading] is a kind of warning to the country,”
he said, pointing out to an increasing tension in the South Caucasus.

Safaryan considered it strange that the ruling circles never treated
the Eurasian Union deal as an obstacle to Armenia’s EU integration.

“That’s simultaneously a matter of ‘both and’ and ‘either or’.

President Serzh Sargsyan first spoke of that on March 18. The Polish
president’s statement saying that it is ‘either or’ came shortly
afterwards. The situation changed after Stefan Fule [European
Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy ]
visited Armenia; the European Union tried its best to solve this
entangled string. Nonetheless the tension hasn’t changed,” he added.

Safaryan further stressed the need of more flexible policies, noting
that Armenia has considerably higher chances to join the Eurasian
rather than European Union. “But it is obvious that we have different
proposals. Armenia has a problem in terms of using all the tools
necessary for strengthening the statehood,” said the politician.

Political Expert: Moscow Is Forced To Take Into Consideration Yereva

POLITICAL EXPERT: MOSCOW IS FORCED TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION YEREVAN’S VIEWPOINT IN THE REGIONAL POLICY

by David Stepanyan

ARMINFO
Tuesday, August 20, 14:24

Moscow is forced to take into consideration Yerevan’s viewpoint in
its regional policy, the head of the political research department
of the Caucasus Institute, Sergey Minasyan, told ArmInfo correspondent.

“Incidentally, the point is about the relations of Russia with Turkey
as well as with Azerbaijan. Armenia’s viewpoint is also taken into
consideration in the efforts of Moscow’s intermediary mission not to
let resumption of the military phase of the Karabakh conflict.

Moreover, for the last years Armenia has become more significant for
Russia, taking into consideration the present low level of relations
with Baku linked with shut down of the Gabala radar station, and
almost hopeless deadlock in the relations with Georgia after the
08.08.08. war”, – Minasyan said and added that against the background
of the negative dynamics in the relations with Azerbaijan and Georgia,
in Moscow they understand very well that if they “lose” Armenia,
that will mean the end of their military and political presence in
the South Caucasus.

Just for this reason, the Kremlin does not even try to hide its
jealousy regarding Armenia’s attempts to deepen relations with the EU
and initial Association Agreement and DCFTA over the November summit
of the Eastern Partnership in Vilnus, Minasyan said.

CIA ADMITS ROLE IN 1953 IRAN COUP AGAINST DEMOCRATICALLY-ELECTED MOSADEQ

The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has for the first time
published a document that confirms Washington’s role in the 1953
coup d’etat against the democratically-elected Iranian Prime Minister
Mohammad Mosadeq.

The open acknowledgment by the US intelligence community comes some
six decades after the British- and American-backed military overthrow.

“The military coup that overthrew Mosadeq and his National Front
Cabinet was carried out under CIA direction as an act of US foreign
policy,” read a brief segment from an internal report by an in-house
CIA historian in the mid-1970s.

The document, published on the National Security Archive website,
was initially released in 1981, but most of it was blacked out at
the time, including an entire section on the coup.

On August 15, 1953, the British and US intelligence agencies initiated
a coup by the Iranian military (known as 28 Mordad coup), setting off
a chain of events including riots in the streets of Iran’s capital,
Tehran, that led to the overthrow and arrest of Mosadeq four days
later.

Mosadeq, convicted of treason, served three years in prison and died
under house arrest in 1967.

The Iranian premier played a key role in the country’s 1951 movement
that resulted in the nationalization of Iran’s oil industry, which had
been mainly controlled by the British-owned Anglo-Iranian Oil Company
(AIOC), now known as BP.

When worldwide sanctions against Iran’s oil industry failed to force
Mosadeq to abandon the move, a plan was devised by Britain (codenamed
‘Operation Boot’) and the US (codenamed TPAJAX Project) to overthrow
his government.

The coup saw the formation of an absolute US-backed monarchy under
Iran’s last Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who was overthrown by the
1979 Islamic Revolution.
