PRESENTATION OF KATIA PELTEKIAN’S BOOK “THE TIMES OF THE GENOCIDE” IN BEIRUT

February 3, 2014

Under the auspices of the Armenian Genocide Centenary Central
Committee (AGCCC) of Lebanon, the Hamazkayin Vahe Sethian Publishing
House organized an evening on January 31, 2014 to present the newly
published two-volume book, “The Times of the Armenian Genocide:
Reports in the British Press (1914-1923)” by Katia M. Peltekian.

The event was attended by distinguished guests that included the
Ambassadors of Armenia, the Vatican, the Argentine, Uruguay and
Russia, as well as the Primate of Lebanon, Bishop Panossian, clergy,
and representatives from the Armenian community and organizations.

Mr. Missak Terzian, representing the Hamazkayin Printing House and
the Lucy Tutunjian Art Gallery, opened the event by welcoming the
audience in both Armenian & English. Presenting the author, he said,
“What Katia Peltekian has accomplished is an academic research that she
uniquely contributes to study of the Armenian Genocide.” He introduced
Peltekian, who is a graduate of the American University of Beirut
(Lebanon) & Dalhousie University (Canada), and has taught English at
AUB & Haigazian Universities. Terzian also hoped that “this two-volume
work by Peltekian will become beneficial and a stimulus for the friends
of the Armenian people in their pursuit of justice and human rights

Katia Peltekian then spoke and briefly introduced her book, admitting
that the work was the result of 12 years of research which she had
begun as an amateur in history. Speaking in English, she stated that
the general impression that most Armenians had was that Europe did not
help the Armenian people during their suffering; however, in reality,
she stressed the fact that Europe, and in this case Britain (the
focus of the book) did put some effort to help the Armenians, thanks
to a kind of lobbying in the parliament by Lord James Bryce and a few
other members of the Parliament; it is noteworthy, she said, that the
Armenian massacres, deportations, refugees and future were discussed
and debated in the British Parliament over 70 times during the 10
years that the book covers. Peltekian also conveyed her heartfelt
gratitude to the organizers and supporters of the evening’s event.

Mrs. Anita Libiar then spoke in English on behalf of the AGCCC
of Lebanon and greeted Katia Peltekian’s work, emphasizing its
message and goals. Libiar referred to Peltekian’s book that compiles
archival material from Britain, putting under the spotlight the public
and official reaction of Britain towards the ongoing massacres and
events as they occurred. Libiar then thanked Peltekian for her work,
commending her highly.

Finally, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the
Republic of Armenia Ashot Kocharyan, speaking in both Armenian &
English, stressed the importance of Katia Peltekian’s work. “99 years
after the Genocide, this valuable book again confirms the undeniable
fact of the Genocide,” said Amb. Kocharyan. He added that despite all
the evidence, Turkey still denies that a Genocide happened against the
Armenians. He said, “On May 24, 1915, three states – Britain, Russia
and France – jointly sent Turkey a warning to halt the massacres not
only because it was perpetrated against the Armenians, but because
it was against humanity.” Amb. Kocharyan also restated the President
of the Republic of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan’s position: “We, as a state
and a nation, in all corners of the world, will continue our struggle,
to fight against injustice, apathy and silence.” Amb. Kocharyan then
praised the AGCCC of Lebanon and wished them solidarity and success.

The Ambassador ended his speech by wishing Katia Peltekian further
success in future endeavors.

It is to be noted that Katia Peltekian’s book was published in October
2013 in two-volumes: the first volume of the book covers 1914 through
1919 and compiles over 450 reports and articles printed in the British
Press pertaining to Armenia and Armenians, especially from The Guardian
(formerly The Manchester Guardian ) , and The Times and Sunday Times
of London; the second volume compiles over 570 articles.

The book was first presented at Hye Doon (Armenian House) in London
on November 22 , 2013

Katia Peltekian then autographed her book.

OSCE Chief Calls To Reduce Tensions At Contact Line, Doesn’t Name Cu

OSCE CHIEF CALLS TO REDUCE TENSIONS AT CONTACT LINE, DOESN’T NAME CULPRITS

February 4, 2014 – 18:10 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Didier Burkhalter, Swiss Foreign Minister and OSCE
Chairperson-in-Office, expressed concern about the deaths and injuries
among military personnel and civilians on the contact line between
Azerbaijani and Armenian troops.

“As the OSCE chairman, I strongly encourage the sides to make full use
of the valuable opportunity provided by visits by OSCE teams to the
border and Line of Contact for direct communication with one another,
with a view to reducing tensions,” Burkhalter told Trend on Feb 4,
the news agency reported.

In late January, a Nagorno Karabakh army soldier, Karen Galstyan,
aged 20, sustained a deadly injury in a sniper attack at the northern
direction of the line of contact with the Azerbaijani armed forces.

Simultaneous attempts of penetration by the Azerbaijani subversive
groups were recorded on January 19-20 in the north-eastern (Jraberd)
and south-eastern (Korgan) directions of the line of contact . The
front units of the armed forces of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic
noticed the actions of the Azerbaijani subversive groups and started
an organized defense in both directions. The rival was thrown back
suffering palpable human and material losses. Junior Sergeant Armen
Hovhannisyan died from the wounds he received during the exchange of
fire in the north-eastern direction.

Also, as a result of the continuous firing from the Azerbaijani side,
a 16-year-old girl was wounded in her leg on Thursday, Jan 23 night
in Aygepar village of Armenia’s Tavush province. Intensive fire was
registered in the direction of Armenian border villages of Nerkin
Karmraghbyur, Aygepar, Chinari and Movses, RA Defense Ministry
spokesman Artsrun Hovhannisyan told PanARMENIAN.Net

The injured girl underwent a surgery in the hospital of Berd town
and later discharged, according to Ankakh.com.

“The Azeris fired upon houses, roofs. Now the firing has stopped,”
one of Aygepar residents told Razm.info.

According to Nerkin Karmraghbyur’s page on Facebook, the firing ceased
at about 5 am Friday. No one was injured; roofs of some houses were
damaged.

Earlier, village administration head Manvel Kamendatyan said that
the electricity was turned off to avoid ignition.

Meanwhile, Azeri media outlets spread reports alleging that a woman
was wounded by Armenians. However, no official comments followed.

ALEKSANDR SOKOLOV: IF EVEN ONE BOMB DROPS ON ARMENIA, THIS WOULD BE CONSIDERED AS AGGRESSION, AND IN THIS CASE THE CSTO TREATY WILL COME INTO FORCE

Tuesday, February 4, 21:30

“Until the moment when Azerbaijani army crosses the border of Armenia,
this is not an Armenia-Azerbaijan political conflict. But if even
one bomb drops on the subject of international law, this would be
considered as aggression”, – Alexander Sokolov, a member of the
Russian presidential council for interethnic relations, said in an
interview with Vesti.az.

“In this case, the conditions of international law and CSTO treaty will
come into force. I hope this will never happen,” Sokolov emphasized. He
also added that Azerbaijani media, consciously or unconsciously,
presents the idea that Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh are not the same
thing. There is a CSTO agreement that involves Russia and Armenia.

There is no military solution to Karabakh conflict, and even in case
of tactical victory of one of the armies, the people living in South

OFFICIALS SLAM AZERBAIJANIS FIGHTING IN SYRIA, CALL FOR TOUGHER MEASURES

ANS TV (in Azeri), Azerbaijan

Azerbaijani MPs and deputy prime minister have strongly criticized
their countrymen fighting on the side of extremist Sunni groups in
Syria, privately-owned ANS TV has reported.

At a parliament session held on 3 February, MP Zahid Oruc said that
Azerbaijani nationals fighting against the Syrian government inside
the terrorist groups “destroy Azerbaijan’s reputation, and we cannot
be indifferent to this issue”.

“Criminal cases should be opened for those who are fighting there
[in Syria]”, he added.

Other MP, Qanira Pasayeva, urged the Azerbaijani government to strongly
deal with those who are attracting the Azerbaijani youth to fight in
Syria, and those who promote radical sects in the country.

In his turn, MP Fuad Muradov spoke about websites calling Azerbaijani
nationals to fight in Syria, and added that “There is a page on
Facebook that clearly conducts propaganda, and it make calls for
fighting”, and he proposed that such websites and groups must be
banned.

Parliament Speaker Oqtay Asadov said that parliament will prevent
the propaganda on internet, and added: “We should review the issues
related to internet websites that clearly call for terrorism”

Deputy Prime Minister Ali Ahmadov also criticized the involvement
of young Azerbaijani people in the fight in Syria, and said that
these people should think about the liberation of Karabakh instead
of fighting in Syria, APA news agency reported.

BBCM note: Nearly 100 Azerbaijanis have reportedly been killed
while fighting Syrian government forces. A total of several hundred
Azerbaijani nationals are reportedly fighting in the ongoing civil war
in Syria. The majority of them are said to be fighting on the side of
extremist Sunni groups and hail from Azerbaijan’s north-west which is
mainly populated by ethnic minorities with ties to Russia’s Dagestan.

Protest Raises Awareness Of Armenian Genocide

PROTEST RAISES AWARENESS OF ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

THE POLY POST (CAL POLY POMONA STUDENT PAPER), CALIFORNIA

Feb 4 2014

Cal Poly Pomona’s Armenian Student Association chapter hosted its
7th annual Armenian Genocide Awareness silent protest on Thursday in
front of the Campus Center Marketplace.

The Armenian genocide began in 1915, soon after the start of World War
I, and to raise awareness about the ongoing oppression of the Armenian
people by the Republic of Turkey, the silent protest was put on by ASA.

According to endgenocide.org, “The combination of massacres, forced
deportation marches and deaths due to disease in concentration camps
is estimated to have killed more than 1 million ethnic Armenians,
Assyrians and Greeks between 1915 and 1923.”

ASA President and sixth-year Electrical Engineering student Emin
Gorgoyan said his goal for this event was to educate people about
the killing of 1.5 million Armenians almost 100 years ago in Turkey.

“People do not really know about the Armenian genocide, and it is
up to us to raise awareness…people need to know what happened,”
said Gorgoyan.

Although ASA usually has this event in April, this year, they decided
to have it in January to bring more awareness to the campus community.

“When we do [the event] in April, it is much bigger,” said Gorgoyan.

“We have crosses set up and a large banner with fingerprints as a
symbol of the people who were killed but not forgotten.”

As students walked past the protesters, they would stop and read
their signs. Although they seemed interested in what was going on,
they did not know about the Armenian Genocide.

Many students stopped and asked questions about the silent protest.

Many of them wondered what the red tape on the lips of participants
meant.

Gorgoyan said the red tape symbolizes the oppression people have to
endure in Turkey since they cannot speak about the Armenian Genocide.

It is a serious crime to do this.

With their mouths covered in red tape to also represent the silence of
the U.S. government towards the injustice of denial, students also
held signs which read “Our wounds are still open,” “Stop Turkish
state terror” and “1915 never again.”

Joseph Kaskanian, a third-year business administration student,
said all Armenians across campuses and across California were doing a
silent protest as a way to remember the hurtful events that decimated
a large group of individuals.

“We cannot live our lives denying what happened in Turkey and
pretending that it did not happen,” said Kaskanian. “Although a lot
of countries have [recognized] this as a genocide, the United States
has not.”

Armenian Youth Federation’s Executive Director Stephan Keshishian was
present at this event and said the Armenian Genocide is an important
part of history, regardless of where students are from.

Running concurrently with other Stain of Denial protests throughout
Southern California, ASA spearheaded an effort to hashtag the Armenian
genocide.

“It is during these times that we ask students to educate themselves
and come out and support,” said Keshishian.

The 20 Armenian students, along with Keshishian, who were at this
event, were more than willing to talk to students and answer any
questions they had.

“We are all very approachable and will give a thorough response backed
up with facts,” said Gorgoyan.

Armenians have tried many times to get the United States to recognize
the Armenian Genocide, but their attempts have failed every time.

“Although many politicians have said they would push the government
to recognize the Armenian genocide, as soon as they get into office,
they do not follow through and turn their backs on us,” said Gorgoyan.

Since the past cannot be changed, peace of mind and closure is what
many Armenians ask for.

“If the American government and the major super powers of the world
don’t recognize that happened, then there is no pressure on the
government of Turkey to admit that what they did was wrong, take
ownership, take responsibility, and pay reparations,” said Keshishian
. “It doesn’t allow the Armenians and the wounds from the trauma
to heal.”

In the last 100 years, Armenians, Jews, Cambodians, Bosnians and
Rwandans have all been victims of genocides.

“We all live in this world together, we should respect and learn from
each other, not hate each other,” said Keshishi. “There shouldn’t be
hate in this world.”

Armenia’s premier and minister of energy clearly stated that the $300
million debt “was written off.”

The four non-coalition parliamentary groups have questions to put

energy and the premier repeatedly stated the gas price had not been
raised. They actually lied,” Zohrabyan said.

February 04, 2014 | 00:14

A group of young Turkish nationalists attempted to foil a conference
organized by the Irkcılıga ve Milliyetcilige DurDe (Say no to Racism
and Nationalism) initiative in Turkey.

During the conference entitled “Why states do not apologize,”
which was held in Istanbul and ahead of the 100th anniversary of
the Armenian Genocide, a group of youth from the Workers’ Party of
Turkey–which is led by Armenian Genocide-denying Turkish politician
Dogu Perincek–entered the conference hall and began chanting,
“Genocide is a lie and a US project!” Marksist.org of Turkey reports.

In response, the conference participants began chanting, “Go out!” and
“We are all Hrant [Dink], we are all Armenians!”

After leaving the conference hall, however, the nationalists went on
to chant in front of the building.

But the conference continued despite the incident.
