Christians Cry Loud to Stop Terrorism in Syria

TEHRAN (FNA)- Metropolitan of Mexico, Venezuela and Central America
and the Caribbean Islands for the Roman Orthodox Church Antonius
Shidrawi said Christians’ cries around the world were continuous
tirelessly, appealing for repelling Takfiri extremism and stopping
support for the western-backed terrorist groups who were committing
systematic crimes in Syria.

“The USA allies with terrorism through sending weapons to the Takfiri
terrorist groups in Syria,” Antonius Shidrawi said in a SANA’s report.

Metropolitan Shidrawi called upon Washington in a statement directed
to the US Ambassador in Lebanon David Hill “you are supporting those
who do not know what freedom is…The Christians are being slaughtered
and displaced from their homeland in Syria, while you are sending
weapons to the Takfiri terrorists under the name of opposition.”

Metropolitan Shidrawi addressed the US Ambassador, saying, “It has
been more than a year since two archbishops were kidnapped in Syria,
and we have not heard a single word criticizing this act by your state
whatsoever neither have we heard that it would pressure its ally,
Turkey, to release them, but rather we hear that it will continue to
send weapons to the armed opposition.”

In the same context, Eastern and Western Greek, Armenian, Coptic,
Maronite and Catholic churches in Austria urged for stopping
supporting terrorists in Syria and the Middle East, protecting
minorities and monitoring extremists, Salafist movements and sleeper
cells in Europe.

This came during prayers held by the churches Saturday for releasing
the kidnapped archbishops Yohanna Ibrahim, the Syriac Orthodox
archbishop of Aleppo, and Paul Yazigi, the Greek Orthodox archbishop
of Aleppo, who were abducted by the armed terrorist groups last year.

The churches warned of the danger of the terrorists on the Austrian
and European societies and the civil peace in Europe and the whole
world.

Armenia has repeated its best finish in Eurovision yet due to Saturday
night’s performance by Aram Mp3 in the grand finale of Europe’s
biggest pop music contest in Copenhagen, Denmark, won by Austria’s
`bearded lady’.

Aram Mp3’s `Not Alone’ song scored 176 points in a combined TV viewer
and professional jury vote, landing the Armenian participant fourth
place in the competition.

Armenia’s highest points came from: France, Austria, Georgia (all 12);
Montenegro, Latvia, Belarus, Ukraine (all 10); Russia, Macedonia (both
8), while it gave its highest points to Montenegro (12), Russia (10),
and Belarus (8).

The contest was won by Austrian drag queen Conchita Wurst, popularly
known as `the bearded lady’, who scored 290 points for her `Rise Like
a Phoenix’ song.

Armenia has participated in Eurovision song contests since 2006
(skipping the 2012 show for security reasons as it was hosted by Baku,
Azerbaijan). Before Aram Mp3 only Sirusho managed to place as high as
fourth in 2008. Armenia’s biggest setback was registered in 2011 when
its participant Emmy failed to qualify for the final.

Putin meets Armenian president – Kremlin text

Vladimir Putin and President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan discussed
pressing issues of bilateral cooperation.

PRESIDENT OF RUSSIA VLADIMIR PUTIN: Mr Sargsyan, welcome to Moscow and
thank you for coming here on the eve of 9 May. Congratulations once
again to you and to the people of Armenia on the coming Victory Day.

Since my visit to Armenia, a great deal has been done to implement the
agreements we reached then. I am happy to have the opportunity to
compare notes today, to see what else needs to be done and in what
areas we should speed up our efforts.

In any case, I am happy to say that Russia remains Armenia’s leading
trade and economic partner, and last year our trade went up by 11 per
cent compared to 2012 (10.6 per cent). This year we are maintaining
the growth rate, and Russia has retained its position as the leading
investor in Armenia’s economy.

I am very happy to see you. Welcome once again.

PRESIDENT OF ARMENIA SERZH SARGSYAN: Thank you, Mr Putin. Allow me to
thank you for your invitation to visit Moscow within the framework of
the CSTO summit meeting, for this opportunity to discuss with you the
pressing issues in our relations. Once again, I would like to
congratulate you and the people of Russia on the Great Victory.

I am happy that Russian-Armenian strategic relations and our
partnership are developing dynamically. We will continue to make every
effort to further expand these relations.

The agreements reached during your state visit and during our meeting
in Moscow on 3 September have undoubtedly enriched our agenda. The
implementation of these agreements will undoubtedly create new
opportunities for close cooperation in all spheres: in foreign policy,
in military technology and the economy.

We are prepared to work actively. I believe this is in line with the
historical traditions of friendship between our nations and our
people’s will.

I am happy to be in Moscow today. Thank you for the invitation and for
the conversation we had. Thank you.

Is Russia Seeking To "Neutralize" Armenian Civil Society?

IS RUSSIA SEEKING TO “NEUTRALIZE” ARMENIAN CIVIL SOCIETY?

EurasiaNet.org
May 9 2014

May 9, 2014 – 2:05pm, by Marianna Grigoryan

Russian Ambassador Ivan Volinkin’s recent call “to neutralize”
Western-funded non-governmental organizations in Armenia is stoking
fears among Armenian activists that the country’s pending membership
in the Moscow-led Customs Union will prompt a rollback of civil rights.

In an interview published in the May 1-15 edition of the Moscow-based,
Armenian newspaper Noyev Kovcheg, Volinkin called for an information
campaign “and other methods” to respond to alleged attempts by local
non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to “drive a wedge” between
Armenia and Russia. As an example of such “methods,” he cited Russia’s
own 2013 law, which requires NGOs that receive international financing
to register as “foreign agents.” He also proposed that Russia be more
active in asserting itself in Armenian media.

The comments sent waves of concern through Armenia’s relatively
active civil society sector, one of the few consistent advocates
for democratic reforms. Concerns long have existed in Armenia that
Yerevan’s planned June accession to a customs union led by Russia
will mean kowtowing to Moscow’s political desires.

The fact that officials in Yerevan have not yet responded publicly to
Amabassador Volinkin’s comments has fed those fears. Rights activist
Artur Sakunts, head of the Helsinki Civil Assembly’s Vanadzor office,
asserted that Volkinin’s comments — as well as similar, previous
utterances – reflected a KGB mindset and illustrated Moscow’s distrust
of Yerevan.

At the April 12 Annual Conference of Russian Compatriots in Yerevan,
Volinkin announced that Moscow would prevent “any aggressive [outside,
non-Russian] intervention in the internal affairs of its neighboring
counties” that it deemed was meant to promote “ideas that are alien
to our minds and hearts.”

Armenian rights activists bristle at the Soviet-era notion of a union
of minds and hearts among Armenians and Russians. “Russia is trying
to silence independent voices in Armenia — the moderate, but strong
civil society, which they have failed to conquer,” said Sakunts. “This
is a problem which has ceased to exist in Belarus and Kazakhstan,
but it does exist in Armenia.”

In contrast to the three current members of the Customs Union, Armenia
is deemed “partly free” by the Washington,DC-based civil-rights
watchdog Freedom House.

The call for a crackdown on international NGOs in Armenia from
a foreign ambassador must be addressed, Armenian civil-society
organizations and opposition members believe. “If Armenian authorities
agree to these instructions, then they will destroy our country’s
future with their own hands,” warned Styopa Safarian, secretary of
the Heritage Party’s parliamentary faction.

On May 7, more than two dozen Armenian NGOs demanded Ambassador
Volkinin’s recall to Moscow, or an official apology from Moscow’s
envoy, as well as an “adequate” response from Armenian President
Serzh Sargsyan’s administration.

“We declare that there aren’t any nongovernmental organizations
working against Armenian-Russian friendship and we advise Ambassador
Volinkin to organize such witch hunts outside Armenia’s borders,”
reads the joint statement. [Editor’s Note: The Open Society
Foundation-Armenia, an entity in the Soros foundations network, is
among the signatories. EurasiaNet.org operates under the auspices

the network].

Armenian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tigran Balaian told journalists
that the government has responded to Ambassador Volinkin, but did not
elaborate. “I don’t think any nongovernmental group is able to drive
a wedge between Armenia and Russia, the centuries-long friendship of
the two peoples and the time-tested partner relations,” Balaian told
RFE/RL’s Armenian service.

For opposition parliamentarian Safarian, however, the ambassador’s
comment has less to do with “friendly relations” with Yerevan than
“about democracy in Armenia.”

The governing Republican Party of Armenia does not seem particularly
concerned right now. Members could not be reached for comment.

There’s little doubt that Sargsyan administration’s ties to Russia
are solid. For the first time since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet
Union, a joint military parade with Russian troops took place on May 9,
Victory Day, in the northern city of Gyumri. The city hosts a Russian
military base.

Political scientist Ruben Mehrabian from Yerevan’s non-profit Center
for Political and International Studies sees nothing surprising
about the government’s efforts to please Moscow while trying to
uphold Armenian sovereignty at the same time. “What is happening
right now fits the existing format of Russian-Armenian relations,”
said Mehrabian. “This is the miserable state we are in.”

ARF Will Offer Proposals For New Armenia Government Program

ARF WILL OFFER PROPOSALS FOR NEW ARMENIA GOVERNMENT PROGRAM

May 09, 2014 | 16:13

YEREVAN. – The opposition ARF Dashnaktsutyun Party National
Assembly (NA) Faction has accepted the government’s proposal and
will participate in the preparation of the new government program,
Faction Secretary Aghvan Vardanyan toldArmenian News-NEWS.am.

“A proposal was made to each [NA] faction, and each will decide whether
or not to submit a proposal. We decided to submit our proposals,”
Vardanyan said.

He noted, however, that they have not discussed this matter with the
rest of the four non-ruling NA factions (Armenian National Congress,
Prosperous Armenia, ARF Dashnaktsutyun, and Heritage).

To the query on whether it has been decided on how ARF will vote
on the government’s new program, Vardanyan responded that they will
decide on this matter solely after having seen the program.

Russian Ambassador: I Am In Armenia To Strengthen Armenia-Russia Rel

RUSSIAN AMBASSADOR: I AM IN ARMENIA TO STRENGTHEN ARMENIA-RUSSIA RELATIONS (VIDEO)

13:40 | May 9,2014 | Politics

Before the start of festive events marking the 69th anniversary of
victory in the Great Patriotic War, Russian Ambassador to Armenia
Ivan Volynkin spoke about his recent statement made in an interview
with the Moscow-based Noyev Kovcheg newspaper.

Volynkin said he did not go back on his words: he is in Armenia to
strengthen Armenia-Russia relations, rather than drive a wedge between
the two countries in question. The Ambassador refused to comment on
the uproar over his statement.

Talking to Noyev Kovcheg earlier this week, Ivan Volynkin said it
is necessary to neutralize the NGOs in Armenia that seek to drive a
wedge between Armenia and Russia. The Russian diplomat’s statement
immediately received sharp criticism in Armenia, with NGOs calling
for Ivan Volynkin to be vigilant and alert and show respect for the
Armenian Constitution.

Armenian Genocide Monument To Be Unveiled In Lowell

ARMENIAN GENOCIDE MONUMENT TO BE UNVEILED IN LOWELL

By ARAM JEKNAVORIAN
The Lowell Sun

In the month of April 1915, during World War I, the first recorded
ethnic cleansing of the 20th century began in historic Armenian
provinces in western Turkey and continued until 1.5 million were dead
and hundreds of thousands escaped into the world diaspora. Estimates
are that only 25 percent of ethnic Armenians remained in the world.

Although most of our father’s family was lost, 14-year-old Abraham
was miraculously saved by a Greek family who hid him in their home
while resident Armenians were driven out of their Black Sea port city,
Ordu, onto their death march into the deserts of Dezor.

That family exposed themselves to danger and possible extinction if
caught aiding young Abraham’s escape. Little did they now that the
same fate awaited them in 1922 when nearly 1 million resident ethnic
Greeks and Assyrians were massacred in Smyrnia and Condos, Turkey.

On Saturday, May 10, at 10 a.m., a procession will begin from the
corner of John and Merrimack streets to Lowell City Hall Plaza for a
flag-raising ceremony and unveiling of a monument commemorating the
genocide. The monument, with its exquisite “Mothers hands Weaving”
design by Daniel Hejinian, was donated by all social, fraternal,
religious members and friends of the Merrimack Valley American Armenian
community in New England and areas beyond.

EDUARD SHARMAZANOV: THERE ARE TWO KEY ACTORS IN THE SOUTH CAUCASUS REGION – TURKEY AND RUSSIA: ARMENIA HAS MADE A RIGHT CHOICE

by Tatevik Shahunyan

Friday, May 9, 01:31

There are two key actors in South Caucasus region – Turkey and Russia,
Eduard Sharmazanov, Vice Speaker of Armenian Parliament, Spokesman for
the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), said during a meeting
with the students of the Armenian State Pedagogical University.

He said that in this region, which is complicated from the geopolitical
point of view, Armenia should get a right direction and that it has
already done it. “Armenia, which lacks a rich natural potential and
is surrounded by such neighbors as Turkey and Azerbaijan, cannot help
integrating into a military and political alliance. We have done it by
choosing the CSTO. An alternative to it is another alliance and Turkey
is among its members. I consider Armenia’s choice to be justified and
time-proved. Russia is a natural partner of Armenia. It should also
be noted that no organization, except the CSTO, has declared Armenia’s
guarantees in case of Azerbaijan’s attacks on it”, said Sharmazanov.

In the meantime, it does not mean that Armenia should not deepen its
relations with Europe. “Time has shown that Armenia’s policy is correct
and Europe has realized it. The high-ranking European officials have
changed their statements made after Armenia announced its intention
to join the Customs Union. Now the European officials express their
willingness to continue the cooperation with Armenia in conducting
the democratic reforms”, he said.

ARMENIA PM AGAINST RETURN OF LIBERATED TERRITORIES OF NAGORNO-KARABAKH TO AZERBAIJAN

May 09, 2014 | 13:11

YEREVAN. – Armenian PM Hovik Abrahamyan opposed return of liberated
territories of Nagorno-Karabakh to Azerbaijan.

His comments came in response to James Warlick speech during
which he presented the six key elements for the settlement of the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“All problems should be solved clearly. The issue must be settled
based on three principles: non-use of force, right of nations to
self-determination and territorial integrity. This is our principle,”
he told reporter s at the Victory Park.

As reported earlier, OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair James Warlick
delivered a speech at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
on Wednesday.
