Une Defaite Pour Le Parti Republicain

UNE DEFAITE POUR LE PARTI REPUBLICAIN

Politique

“Cela signifie
que les gens ont mûri.”

Petrossian a fermement dementi toute tricherie.

BAKU: Azerbaijan To Stop Armenia’s Dangerous Tourism Propaganda In O

AZERBAIJAN TO STOP ARMENIA’S DANGEROUS TOURISM PROPAGANDA IN OCCUPIED TERRITORIES

AzerNews, Azerbaijan

By Sara Rajabova

Armenia, keeping Azerbaijan’s territories under occupation for over
20 years, is planning to attract tourists to the occupied territories.

Armenia occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s internationally
recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent
regions, after laying territorial claims against its South Caucasus
neighbor that had caused a lengthy war in the early 1990s. The UN
Security Council has adopted four resolutions on Armenia’s withdrawal
from the Azerbaijani territory, but they have not been enforced to
this day.

Unable to ensure the security of the visitors to the occupied
territories, the Armenian government is trying to attract tourists
to these areas by various ways including internet advertisement,
holding tourism exhibitions and etc.

Azerbaijani government and missions abroad have always tried to
prevent such actions.

Currently, Azerbaijan is preparing a draft resolution to prevent the
tourism propaganda in its occupied territories.

Azerbaijan intends to include a special paragraph to prevent tourism
propaganda in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan into the agenda
of the next session of the Executive Committee of the World Tourism
Organization (WTO), Azerbaijan’s Culture and Tourism Ministry said
on June 9.

The 98th session of the Executive Committee of the WTO was held in
Spain’s Santiago de Compostela city on June 5-6.

Azerbaijan’s Culture and Tourism Deputy Minister Nazim Samadov,
Azerbaijani Ambassador to Spain Altay Efendiyev, deputy head of the
tourism department Rauf Pashayev and Director of the Baku Tourist
Information Centre Zakir Aliyev attended the session.

Samadov delivered a speech during the meeting on the “The role of
tourist routes in supporting regional development and integration”
within the session. He touched upon facilitation of visa regime,
transport infrastructure development and other issues.

Samadov also proposed to outline a special paragraph on preventing
tourism propaganda in the occupied lands and prepare the relevant
draft resolutions by the Azerbaijani side.

The session participants have accepted the proposal.

The occupied territories of Azerbaijan are not safe as the various
terroristic groups are active in these territories which are under
control of a separatist regime.

Furthermore, unauthorized visits to Nagorno-Karabakh and other regions
of Azerbaijan which are occupied by Armenia are considered illegal.

The individuals who pay such visits are included in Azerbaijani
Foreign Ministry’s “black list” and considered as “persona-non-grata.”

ANKARA: Turkish Politics 101

TURKISH POLITICS 101

Cihan News Agency, Turkey
June 9 2014

ISTANBUL – 09.06.2014 09:55:16

Many Westerners find some aspects of Turkish culture rather
mind-boggling.

Who, in their early days as an expat, did not become confused by
Turks’ body language, such as the simple “tsk” sound or raising their
eyebrows, or both at the same time, or both while nodding their head
upwards? Over time, you gradually learn that each is more emphatic
than the last.

And don’t forget that a casual nod of the head means, “yes,” and
a shake of the head means, “I am not sure” — if you do that, a
salesperson will keep on with his patter to try to help you reach
a decision.

While gestures may be easy to grasp, this is not the case with
Turkish politics.

In my June 6 article titled “How the Turkish government operates and
election season,” I briefly described how the government operates,
but politics is another subject. Under the direction of Mustafa Kemal
Ataturk, the Turkish army assumed the role of special protector of
the republic’s secular ideals. There has been talk of whether or not
Turkey has reached a coup period, something to which the country is
not foreign. Some fear that if so, the reasons may not be the same
as those in the past.

Turkey has experienced three military coups within three decades. In
the late 1950s, political and economic instability caused anarchy
and violence, leading to a bloodless military coup in 1960, led by Gen.

Cemal Gursel. In 1971, strikes and student unrest led to another coup.

Military rule lasted until elections were held in 1973. Subsequent
years were full of economic and social problems. Tension between
the political left and right increased. The 1970s saw a string of
coalition governments. By the end of the decade, political violence
had reached such a high level that in 1980 another military regime
was imposed by Gen. Kenan Evren.

In 1983, there was a return to civilian rule. Turgut Ozal was elected
as prime minister, and a new constitution restructured the country
to be more in line with the West. Ozal and his Motherland Party
(ANAVATAN) focused on economic growth with the aim of opening up
Turkey more to the West. Ozal’s reforms narrowed the political and
economic gap between Turkey and Europe. He also served as president
between 1989 and 1993.

After Turkey experienced a series of economic shocks in 2002, a major
political power shift occurred, putting the religiously conservative
Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in power, a position they
still hold today. One of the key events in the AK Party government’s
rule has been the Ergenekon trial, which involves a large number of
military officers and other public figures who have been accused of
being members of a shadowy “deep-state” organization that has allegedly
committed political assassinations and various other crimes in order
to thwart the democratic process. Opinion is divided in Turkey as to
the veracity of these accusations.

The Ergenekon investigation began after a number of high-profile
murders, including that of Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink
and three Christian missionaries in Malatya. The investigation has
also involved the exhumation of Ozal’s body on suspicion that he
was poisoned.

The average American does not have a clue about the implications
of the defeat of Germany in 1918, which caused humiliation for its
Turkish ally. The Ottoman Empire was dissolved by the crushing terms
of the Treaty of Sevres, signed in 1920 with the victorious Allies —
excluding Russia and the United States. In my book “Culture Smart:
Turkey” you can read more on the subject. Let’s just say the regional
map was redrawn. The Treaty of Sevres thus spelled the end of the
Ottoman Empire, by placing its lands in the hands of the Allies;
it sparked the patriotic fire that drove Ataturk to fight for an
independent Turkish nation.

History reveals how Turks have been willing to fight and die for a
cause they believe in. The Turkish struggle for national sovereignty
lasted three years, and by its end, the Turks had driven all foreign
forces from their land.

The West recognizes Turkey’s strong cultural links with Central Asia
and the Islamic world, and there are elements in Turkish society that
would like it to reduce its ties with the West and increase those with
the Middle East and Central Asia. Turkey’s large Muslim population
means it is often feared by the West and wooed at the same time.

Nowhere is this more evident than the responses to Turkey’s application
to join the European Union.

South Florida Armenian Students Participate in Summer Internships

By Taniel Koushakjian
FLArmenians Managing Editor

Instead of taking the summer off, five South Florida Armenian students are
working in a variety of industries to advance their careers. From finance
to international relations to law, Florida’s Armenian American youth are
growing fast and branching out across America.

Mariam Grigoryan, a Boca Raton native and senior at the University of
Florida (UF), is currently a legal intern in the Broward County Public
Defender office in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Under the director of Public
Defender Howard Finkelstein Grigoryan’s work will focus on indigent
defense. Grigoryan looks to graduate with a double major in Political
Science and Criminology, as well as a minor in Business Administration. She
plans to attend law school in the fall of 2015.

Boca Raton resident and Queens, New York native, Gevork Sarkisian, is also
pursuing his career in the legal field. A second year law student at Nova
Southeastern University (NSU), Sarkisian is currently interning with the
law firm Kanner and Pintaluga, P.A. in Delray Beach, Florida. Sarkisian
received his B.A. in Criminal Justice from Florida Atlantic University
(FAU). Following his internship, Sarkisian plans to visit Washington, DC to
`explore new opportunities in the legal field,’ he said.

Palm Beach County native Carine Kazandjian, a communications major and
commercial music minor at FAU, is spending her summer interning with Clear
Channel Media and Entertainment Company in West Palm Beach, Florida. The
FAU junior has a passion for music and has even released a few songs of her
own, available on ITunes. `I am gaining so much knowledge working with the
different departments whether it is radio or promotions. The music industry
is mainly what I want my future in and this internship is giving me the
opportunity to learn more and more each day,’ Kazandjian said.

Meanwhile, her twin sister, Sarine Kazandjian, is currently interning at
Morgan Stanley’s Palm Beach Gardens office. A finance major with a
minor
focus in entrepreneurship, Kazandjian is a junior at the University of
Florida.

Florida International University (FIU) junior Gevorg Shahbazyan is
currently an intern in the office of the Nagorno Karabakh Representative in
Washington, DC as a participant in the Armenian Assembly of America’s
Terjenian-Thomas Summer Internship Program, the first student internship
program offered by an Armenian organization in America. Recently, Shabazyan
worked with his fellow students and FIU faculty to have the flags of
Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh raised in the school’s atrium. Hailing from
Yerevan, Armenia, Shahbazyan studies international relations and hopes to
continue his studies in graduate school and someday be a diplomat.

These young, bright, rising stars of the South Florida Armenian American
community are sure to impress their friends and colleagues, while
representing our community proudly in all their endeavors.
