KAREN DEMIRCHYAN SPORT AND CONCERT COMPLEX DOES NOT ATTRACT BUYERS

15:59 | July 12,2014 | Social

No one seems to be interested in buying the Karen Demirchyan Sport
and Concert Complex in Yerevan, commonly known as Hamalir, which has
been put it up for auction for the fourth time. The auction ends on
Sunday, July 14.

On May 19, the Judicial Acts Compulsory Enforcement Service of the
Ministry of Justice put the complex for auction at a price of 19
billion, 350 million drams. But as no bids had been presented by the
deadline, the building was put up for fresh auctions, with the price
being reduced by 10 percent every time.

Now the bidding price for the building was first set at 14 billion,
106 million drams.

When putting the building for auction, the Judicial Acts Compulsory
Enforcement Service said its owner had failed to repay his debts to
the state budget running into tens of millions of dollars.

The Hamalir, one of the city’s architectural landmarks was built in
1983. The seven-storied building is also located adjacent to the
Tsitsernakabert – a hilltop memorial to the victims of the 1915
Armenian Genocide.

Iran’s Hint To Armenia

IRAN’S HINT TO ARMENIA

Hakob Badalyan, Political Commentator
Comments – 11 July 2014, 22:08

Radio Liberty informed that Doctor Vahan Hamazaspyan was visited by
the Iranian ambassador to get acquainted with the solar power device
designed by the scientist which supplies electricity and heating. The
scientist had stated earlier that his device has aroused interest
outside Armenia, namely in Kazakhstan, while the Armenian government
is indifferent.

In fact, Iran is already interested. The Iranian ambassador told
Radio Liberty he admired the scientist’s device and it will interest
the Iranian companies in the sphere of solar energy.

Experts have different opinions on Hamazaspyan’s device. Many people
say everything is not so clear, and the effectiveness of the device
is a big issue.

However, in this case the problem is beyond the scientific and
technical circles, it is already a political matter when the
scientist is visited by the Iranian ambassador. And especially the
Iranian ambassador whose country is perhaps already tired of sending
political essages to Armenia, sending indirect but transparent and
explicit invitations for regional economic and political partnership.

Last December the Iranian ambassador made a statement on the
possibility to buy cheap gas from Iran, noting that the price of gas
can be negotiated, and while Iran sells gas to one for 400 dollars,
it may sell to another for 100 dollars.

Armenia, however, namely Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan defined
his statement as a diplomatic mistake, the ex-minister of energy
Armen Movsisyan said the ambassador is not informed well, and the
country continued to ensure Gazprom’s super profits and the process
of surrender of sovereignty of the state.

In one of his statements the minister of energy of Iran said Armenia
is one of the possible routes of export of Iranian gas to Europe.

The Iranian minister is aware of how complicated the issue is, as
well as the Iranian gas is, mildly speaking, a theoretical matter for
Europe. It is a remote plan, while the American-Canadian shallow gas
is already quite close to Europe. Hence, the problem of the Iranian
gas pipeline is rather a platform for politics than a substantial
plan that is worth consideration. Iran offered Armenia to join this
platform whereas Yerevan responded to the statement of the Iranian
minister with silence.

Now the Iranian ambassador visits the Armenian scientist to see
his device in a period when the misery and glamour of the Armenian
energy sector surrendered to Russia has been demonstrated, haunted by
outages and electricity price hike. In this period Iran meets with the
Armenian scientist to learn about the alternative energy project of the
Armenian scientist which is, apparently, Tehran’s message to Armenia
to put the issue of joint work on innovations in alternative energy
on the agenda that will promote energy independence and reduction of
the electricity price, at least in a long-term period.

The process of normalization between Iran and the West promises
improvement of Iran’s economic opportunities. Iranian money
and Armenian science may work together effectively, ensuring a
technological breakthrough. It stems from the interests of the West
because this path may lead to substantial changes and change of the
balance of forces.

Currently substantial changes in the Caucasus are not desirable for
the Russian-Turkish-Azerbaijani cooperation which aspires to dominance
over the South Caucasus because they need modernization but cannot
ensure it.

Armenia has the most important thing for a technological breakthrough
and substantial changes in the Caucasus, the human-intellectual
resource, which is an indisputable reality. Iran offers Yerevan to
put this resource on the agenda and make it a substantial instrument
of politics.

Will Armenia notice this proposal? After all, here they are dealing
with more important issues, such as insuring better conditions in
Russia for Armenian migrant workers.

ANKARA: OSCE Committed To Peaceful Resolution Of Nagorno-Karabakh Co

OSCE COMMITTED TO PEACEFUL RESOLUTION OF NAGORNO-KARABAKH CONFLICT

Cihan News Agency, Turkey
July 11 2014

BAKU – 11.07.2014 11:11:28

The OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, the U.S., Russia, France, share a
common view to work together to support the Nagorno-Karabakh peace,
the OSCE Minsk Group’s U.S. Co-chair, James Warlick wrote on his
personal Twitter page.

He noted that the settlement of the conflict is possible.

Warlick noted earlier that he was leaving Washington to meet with
the OSCE co-chairs to discuss next steps on Nagorno-Karabakh peace.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied
20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and
seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs
of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently
holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the
surrounding regions. (Cihan/Trend az)

ARMENIAN PM TOURS MERIDIAN FREE ECONOMIC ZONE TO OBSERVE BUSINESS ACTIVITIES

Armenian Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan recently visited the
Meridian free economic zone to witness jewelry, diamond-processing
and watch-making business organization activities.

A decision was passed on Feb. 27 recognizing the Armenian Jewelers
Association (AJA) as the manager of free economic zone CJSC that began
operating on the site of an estate complex at Kashegortsneri-70 in
the capital of Yerevan.

Abrahamyan toured the estate site, inspecting activities and receiving
briefings on projected actions. During the tour, AJA President
Gagik Gevorgyan said the AJA will spend approximately $14 million in
capital investment to refurbish and upgrade manufacturing facilities,
set up infrastructure and purchase needed equipment, and improve and
landscape the surrounding area.

An estimated 1,200 new jobs will be generated from foreign company
involvement in the zone, with instruments of intent signed with eight
entities from Russia, the U.S., Algeria and Jordan, with the output
to be exported to the U.S., Russia, the UAE, israel, India, Italy,
Thailand, Hong Kong, Austria and Belgium, among others.

Additional talks are ongoing with 12 other foreign companies.

Science Inc. Acquires Armenian Mobile App-Maker Inlight

SCIENCE INC. ACQUIRES ARMENIAN MOBILE APP-MAKER INLIGHT

Tech Crunch
July 11 2014

by Anthony Ha

Looks like Science Inc. is getting more serious about mobile
development — the startup studio is announcing that it has acquired
an eight-person company based in Yerevan, Armenia called Inlight.

That company developed the iOS app of the same name, a social
newsreading service targeting women. Science CEO Mike Jones and Chief
Business Officer Peter Pham (pictured above at TechCrunch Disrupt)
both told me that while the firm will continue to support the app,
the real purpose of the acquisition was hiring a mobile development
team to support Science companies.

That gets at one of the reasons that the firm calls itself a studio,
rather than another incubator or accelerator. It doesn’t just fund
and mentor companies, but also employs a team that can build products
and provide other services to its companies (it invests in some of
those companies and owns others outright). At this point, Pham said
Science has built “a code base to launch e-commerce companies,”
so that, for example, any Science company in that area can launch
“with all the analytics and optimization pieces built in.”

Science companies include Dollar Shave Club, DogVacay, and, through
an acquisition, Delicious.

And even though the firm is headquartered in Santa Monica, it has
a development team in India, too. What’s been lacking, Jones said,
is a team that’s specifically focused on mobile.

“Part of my belief on mobile is that we need to take a lot of bets
very quickly,” he said. “And the belief was that in order to do that
we really needed a best of breed, fast development team.”

Pham added that having the team in place could help Science “experiment
more with just pure social products,” an area that hasn’t been a big
focus yet (despite Jones’ experience as a former CEO of Myspace). He
said it would also be useful for Science companies that are “maybe
not a core mobile company” — they need to build a mobile app but it
doesn’t necessarily make sense to employ a mobile developer full time.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
