Isis tells Christians to convert or face death

By Patrick Cockburn

The largest flight of Christians in the Middle East since the massacre
of Armenians in Turkey during World War I continues as Isis continues
its hardline policies against those it deems “unbelievers”.

The last Christians in northern Iraq are fleeing from places where
their communities have lived for almost 2000 years, as a deadline
passed for them to either convert to Islam, pay a special tax or be
killed.

Isis (Islamic State) issued a decree last week offering Christians the
three options accompanied by the ominous threat that, if they did not
comply by July 20, “then there is nothing to give them but the sword”.

Isis, which now rules an area larger than Britain, has already
eliminated many of the ancient Christian communities of eastern Syria.

Christians fleeing Mosul, which was captured by Isis on June 11, are
being stripped of all their possessions.

Mosul is one of the most ancient centres of Christianity and on the
east bank of the Tigris River that flows through the city is a mosque
housing the tomb of the Biblical figure of Jonah.

This is now in danger of being destroyed by Isis, whose version of
Islam is opposed to the worship of tombs, shrines, statues and
pictures.

Tens of thousands of Shabak and Shiah Turkmen, demonised as
polytheists and apostates by Isis, have fled their homes following
raids by Isis gunmen.

The persecution of Christians, of whom there were over one million in
Iraq before the US and British invasion of 2003, was slower to
develop.

But a report by Human Rights Watch says that from July 15 a number of
homes in Mosul were painted with the letter “N” for Nasrani (the
Arabic for Christian).

Hamazkayin’s Landmark Forum Held in Yerevan

Hamazkayin’s Landmark Forum Held in Yerevan

Monday, July 21st, 2014

Student participants pose in front of the David of Sassoun monument in
Yerevan, Armenia.

YEREVAN–Hamazkayin Cultural and Educational Society’s 20th Student
Forum held its official opening on Saturday, July 19, at 12 p.m., and
in attendance was Hamazkayin Central Executive member Sbardag
Gharabaghtsian, Hamazkayin Forum’s primary lecturer and educational
advisor for years Hrant Markarian, as well as members and friends of
Hamazkayin.

The opening ceremony welcoming remarks were given by Armenia’s
Hamazkayin Fund president Lilit Galstyan, who gave a presentation on
the founding of Hamazkayin, its international expansion and the
extensive work it has carried out, and finally the Hamazkayin Forum.
She described how 20 years ago the Central Executive conceived of the
idea of a student-youth forum, as well as how it saw the importance of
organizing such a forum in the Armenian homeland.

A warm welcome was also given to the participants by the Hamazkayin
Forum’s primary lecturer and educational advisor Hrant Markarian, who
emphasized the Forum’s essence and its Armenian spirit. Markarian
added that the participants will return home more attached to their
identity and direct their friends to their homeland.

Then, Hamazkayin Central Executive member Sbardag Gharabaghtsian shed
light on the importance of Forum’s program and the necessity of
organizing it in the homeland.

Hamazkayin Forum 2014 group leader Ara Parseghian briefly spoke about
the key to a successful Forum – discipline and respect for the rules.
He asked all to be punctual, so that the program could be realized in
its entirety. He also relayed essential information for the
participants’ stay in Armenia, as well as information about the
schedule of the Forum and the work and activities of the various
culturally themed committees that all will take part in.

The participants – from 11 different regions – from Armenia, Artsakh,
Javakhk, USA, Canada, Australia, Lebanon, Syria, France, Cyprus, and
Brazil introduced themselves and after meeting one another descended
to the restaurant downstairs for lunch, after which they hopped on the
tour bus and enthusiastically visited the National Museum, Sasuntsi
Tavit Statue, St. Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral, and the Mother
Armenia (Mayr Hayastan) Statue. Interesting and fun facts were passed
on to the participants about each of the sights and sites that the
group toured.

Combating tiredness and sleeplessness, the Forum participants got
dressed and ready and departed to “Yerevanian Kisherner” Restaurant,
where the already friendly and sociable atmosphere continued.

The second day of the Forum started on Sunday July 20th.

After the breakfast, the Forum participants attended a lecture
entitled “Armenian Cause, 100 anniversary and retribution”, delivered
by Giro Manayon, director of Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF)
Bureau’s Armenian National Committee and Political Affairs office.

Participants attend a lecture

Minoyan talked about current activities of the Hay Tahd Committee. He
also talked about retribution, the issues of Nagorno Karapagh, and
Armenia-Turkey Relations and the standing protocols. Minoyan also shed
some light on the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide and what
is expected from the Diaspora.

Participants were given the opportunity to ask questions to the
lecturer. Minoyan said that it is time for Armenians across the globe
to move from the phase of recognition to the phase of retribution and
raise awareness both politically and academically.

After lunch, Hamazkayin Forum participants visited Charent’s Arch,
Karni temple, and Keghart monastery. On their way back to Yerevan, the
Forum participants attended Armenia State Dance Ensemble’s performance
at Aram Khatchaturian Concert Hall.

After the dinner, Forum participants enjoyed Yerevan’s night life and
spent a wonderful evening with their peers.

Levon Hayrapetyan’s arrest beneficial for Turkic oil circles of Russia

YEREVAN. – The arrest of Armenian-Russian billionaire Levon
Hayrapetyan is beneficial for Turkic oil circles of Russia,
sociologist Aharon Adibekyan believes.

Hayrapetyan is “guilty” of claims for participation in the oil
business in Russia which is traditionally known for strong position of
Azerbaijanis and representatives of other Turkic nations, Adibekyan
said.

“Although Russia is our ally, when it comes to money different rules
may work. The Armenians are traditionally getting an access to the
banking sector, construction, high technology, but not oil and gas.
This caused displeasure,” Adibekyan told reporters on Saturday.

A Moscow court on Thursday sanctioned the arrest of Levon Hayrapetyan,
who is suspected of dirty money squandering and laundering. The court
granted the investigator’s respective motion and set arrest until
September 15 as his restraining order.

Priests Attacked At Armenian Church In Tbilisi

PRIESTS ATTACKED AT ARMENIAN CHURCH IN TBILISI

12:16 21.07.2014

Armenian Church, Georgia

About 50 people physically attacked priests at an Armenian Church in
Tbilisi on Saturday, the Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox
Church in Georgia said in a statement.

The Armenian Orthodox Church says the attack was motivated by religious
and ethnic prejudice, but Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs
treats the incident as normal crime not related to discrimination.

According to the Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church in
Georgia, July 19, there was an organized attack on Surb Etchmiadzin
Church in Tbilisi, motivated by ethnic and regions hatred.

The Church’s statements says a provocation took place at about 16:00.

A woman was trying to drive her car out of the area adjacent to the
church, but was unsuccessful and started to express dissatisfaction
towards the cleric at the Armenian Church as if his car was blocking
the way for her own to car in the parking area.

At that moment, two ‘aggressively disposed’ men approached and helped
to get the car out. The cleric entered the administrative building
of Armenian Church.

Then there were young deacons in the yard, who heard that the men
were verbally insulting Armenians. They protested. A man left the car,
took a baton and a stone and again insulted and attempted to hit the
representatives of the Armenian Diocese.

Hearing a noise from outside, other clerics came out into the yard
in order to defuse the situation, when the man hit one of clerics on
his back. There was a short fight.

Two hours after the incident, the man returned with a group of about
50 men. Some of them were armed with cold weapons. They approached the
church and got into a scuffle with the clerics and employees of the
diocese, all the time verbally insulting Armenians. People attending
a Christening ceremony inside the church came out into the yard and
the men attacked them too.

“Women and children, shocked by what they had seen, hid in the church,”
the statement reads. “We must note that a group of nicely dressed
people were watching the incident.”

As a result of the attack, clerics and employees of the Armenian
Diocese got physical injuries. One of the men tore a cross off one
priest and took it with him.

The Armenian Church calls on law enforcement bodies to thoroughly
investigate what happened on Saturday as a crime committed on ethnic
and religious grounds.

Nino Giorgobiani, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Internal Affairs,
told DF Watch that the quarrel took place on ‘everyday grounds’
because the conflict started about the parking of car. She said an
investigation has been launched in the incident.

Levon Isakhanyan, head of the department of legal issues, relations
with state institutions and interreligious cooperation at the Armenian
Apostolic Church in Georgia, told DF Watch that Interior Ministry
launched an investigation for beating, which is incorrect. He said that
there is footage of the attack, which the diocese will publish soon.

The Armenian Church called on the media to avoid promoting
anti-Armenian attitudes in society and also called on Georgia’s
Orthodox Church to publicly condemn any actions based on ethnic and
religious hatred and preach kindness and love.

“For many centuries, we have have been concerned with the internal
stability of Georgia and interethnic and interreligious relations,
and we call on the Georgian government to take all necessary measures
in order to avoid ethnic and religious separation of Georgian society.”

Ter-Petrosyan: Armenian Government Is Facing A Big Dilemma

TER-PETROSYAN: ARMENIAN GOVERNMENT IS FACING A BIG DILEMMA

POLITICS | 21.07.14 | 13:03

Opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan
criticized the Armenian government for doing little to solve the
current pressing issues facing the country, while focusing on what
he described as a premature constitutional reform.

In an interview with ilur.am, Ter-Petrosyan refrained from commenting
on the current situation around Nagorno-Karabakh, saying that it
is the government that has the full information and needs to make
explanations in this regard. “But corresponding government bodies
do not provide any clear explanation to the public, which makes the
situation even more worrisome.”

He described the response of Armenian forces to Azeri ceasefire
violations as “quite restrained and inadequate”. He said that it
could be explained by the following circumstance: the Armenian side
is cautious to retaliate, considering that it could lead, if not
to a large-scale war, then to a more dangerous exacerbation of the
situation. And this, according to Ter-Petrosyan, makes Azerbaijan
even more impudent. “Therefore, Armenian authorities are facing a
big dilemma to solve which requires immense efforts and exclusive
political resourcefulness,” he said.

“Azerbaijan’s aggressive actions are to some extent connected, on the
one hand, with the distrust that the West shows towards Armenia in
the wake of the aborted process on Armenia’s European association,
on the other hand with the still uncertain status of Armenia within
the framework of the Eurasian Union,” said Ter-Petrosyan.

The opposition leader said that in his opinion the delay in Armenia’s
membership in the Russian-led union is not connected with “technical
matters” that the Armenian side says have long been solved, nor with
economic considerations. The answer to this question, therefore,
should be sought in the political sphere.

“It is clear that a sharp demand was set to Armenia by the founding
members of the Eurasian Union – to install customs checkpoints on
the entire perimeter of the Armenia-Karabakh border. The Armenian
government is now facing the dilemma of whether to meet this demand
or not… If it fails to meet the demand, Armenia, which has already
spoiled its relations with the West, will find itself in full political
and economic vacuum. And if it meets the demand, it will create a
panicky psychological state of being abandoned in Karabakh, which
is fraught with serious tensions in the relations between Armenia
and Karabakh.”

“In short, it is not Russia, Kazakhstan or Belarus that cause the
delay in [Armenia’s] Eurasian Union membership, but Armenia itself,
as now it has not yet found a key to solving the problem of the issue
of placing customs checkpoints at the Armenia-Karabakh border.”

Ter-Petrosyan said that if held, a possible new meeting between
the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan (following French President
Francois Hollande’s initiative) would be a positive development. “Even
if the Hollande-Aliyev-Sargsyan meeting fails to bring any serious
progress in the Karabakh settlement, considering the current
Armenian-Azerbaijani border tensions, the result could as well as
considered as satisfactory.”

The opposition leader criticized the authorities for failing to
address these issues, while instead pursuing ‘untimely’ Constitutional
reforms. “Instead of putting out a fire that has broke out in Armenia
and Karabakh, the regime is preoccupied with destroying the foundations
of the Armenian statehood, a hostile act like that would not occur
even to Azerbaijan.”

“Even though all serious political forces have pronounced categorically
against the initiative of constitutional changes, Serzh Sargsyan sees
the position of the Prosperous Armenia Party as the main obstacle
on his way to achieving the goal. If until recently he tried to
overcome this obstacle by a carrot, that is, to win the party over
by some promises, then now, according to the information we have,
by employing the entire law-enforcement machine, he is going to use
the stick against the PAP, that is, threats and blackmail, and the
other opposition forces and the entire society cannot tolerate it,”
said Ter-Petrosyan.

“The issue of constitutional reforms is, therefore, a sort of watershed
between the dictatorial regime and healthy forces of the society, a
problem on whose solution the future of Armenia and Karabakh depends,”
said the opposition leader. “If Serzh Sargsyan continues to persists in
his attempt to eternalize his power by means of constitutional reforms,
then under serious political processes that will unfold in autumn, he,
no doubt, will become the digger of his own ‘bandit state’ system’s
grave. In a certain sense political forces should be thankful to
Serzh Sargsyan for providing them with a consolidating weapon like
the uniting idea of struggle against constitutional changes. Any
dictator, no matter how strong he is, losing the sense of reality
in the course of time, eventually makes a fatal mistake. In the case
with Serzh, this fatal mistake is certain to be the failed initiative
of constitutional changes.”

ITALY EMBASSY REACTS TO AZERBAIJAN PRESIDENT’S ARBITRARY COMMENTS

12:15, 19.07.2014

The Italian Embassy in Baku has responded to the arbitrary comments
by Azerbaijani officials.

Specifically, a respective statement was posted on the Embassy website.

“With reference to the Italian-Azerbaijani Declaration on Strategic
Partnership, whose adoption was agreed upon on the occasion of
the visit in Rome of the President of the republic of Azerbaijan,
Italy deems necessary to clarify its actual scope, thus preventing
interpretations that are not consistent with the position of the
Italian Government on some issues referred to in the document.

“The Declaration…is not meant to interfere at all with the only
ongoing negotiation process towards the settlement of the Nagorno
Karabakh conflict, managed under the OSCE aegis by the tripartite
co-Chairmanship of the Minsk Group, of which Italy is a member and
whose actions Italy recognizes and supports.

“Italy, consistently with the consolidated UE common positions on
the issue, therefore confirms its respect for and confidence in the
ongoing mentioned negotiation process, in the principles proposed
in its framework, and in the actions performed by France, Russian
Federation and the United States as co-Chairmen,” the statement
