Hollywood greats Al Pacino, Ethan Hawke and Jennifer Aniston are set
to dazzle at this year’s Venice film festival, which opens on
Wednesday with tales of war and the economic crisis offset by beach
parties and gondola jaunts.

Michael Keaton, of Beetlejuice and Batman fame, will likely be the
first A-lister to zip by water taxi across the lagoon to present
Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Birdman or the
Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance.

In the first of 20 flicks vying for the coveted Golden Lion prize,
Keaton stars as a washed-up actor, once famous for playing a
superhero, who is now struggling to put on a Broadway play in a bid to
regain his former glory.

French film composer Alexandre Desplat — whose dozens of works include
the scores for The King’s Speech and Harry Potter and the Deathly
Hallows — will head up the main jury at the 71st edition of the
world’s oldest film festival, which runs until September 6.

Many of the 55 films screening — 54 of which are world premieres —
reflect “a moment in which the spectre of war is rising dramatically
again”, festival director Alberto Barbera said in Rome last month as
he unveiled the line-up.

War films

Among them is Good Kill by New Zealand director Andrew Niccol — who
wrote The Truman Show — in which Hawke stars as a drone operator in
Afghanistan, as well as David Oelhoffen’s Loin des hommes, in which
Lord of the Rings star Viggo Mortensen plays a teacher in the Algerian
war.

The five American films in competition include Al Pacino as an ex-con
turned locksmith in David Gordon Green’s Manglehorn, and Ramin
Bahrani’s drama 99 Homes about a father trying to recover his house
after an eviction.

France will make a strong showing with four movies running for top
prize, including Xavier Beauvois’s La Rancon de la gloire, based on a
true story about two men who plot to steal Charlie Chaplain’s coffin
in Switzerland.

For Italy, Francesco Munzi’s Anime Nere explores the Calabrian-based
mafia — cocaine traffickers with a global reach — while Saverio
Costanzo’s Brooklyn-based Hungry Hearts tackles extreme eating
disorders.

There is buzz from critics already over the only first feature
competing for the Lion, the Turkish Sivas, by Kann Mujdeci, about a
young boy who befriends a stray dog he saves.

Documentary

Joshua Oppenheimer fans will be looking forward to The Look of Silence
— in which Indonesian genocide survivors confront the killers of their
brother — the only documentary in competition and the follow-up to his
acclaimed 2012 The Act of Killing.

>From Asia, Japan’s Shinya Tuskamoto will unveil Fires on the Plane, a
jungle-based horror set at the end of World War II, while China’s
Xiaoshaui Wang is set to unnerve with a tale of stalking in Red
Amnesia.

Roy Andersson’s Swedish comedy A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on
Existence about two world-weary men on a sales trip may provide light
relief, but German-Turkish director Fatih Akin’s The Cut takes us back
to the theme of genocide, following an Armenian survivor as he
searches for his daughters.

Out of competition slots have gone to US director Peter Bogdanovich’s
She’s Funny That Way, a comedy starring Owen Wilson and Aniston, as
well as American Lisa Cholodenko’s four-part HBO series Olive
Kitteridge, starring Bill Murray.

Other hotly-awaited flicks include Barry Levinson’s The Humbling,
which stars Pacino as a suicidal actor who has an affair with a much
younger lesbian, as well as The Sound and the Fury by American
heartthrob James Franco, who will be in Venice to pick up an
innovation in cinema award.

The visit of the Armenian Foreign Minister to Turkey will not give
any benefits to Armenia but will not have negative consequences
either, Deputy Director of the Caucasus Institute Sergey Minasyan told
ArmInfo on Tuesday.

He said that by attending the inauguration of Erdogan Nalbandyan is
just trying to comply with diplomatic etiquette. “Of course, if
Armenia refused to attend the ceremony, it would not be isolated from
the region. Simply our authorities decided that they better attend it.
I think the result in both cases would be the same – no result at
all,” Minasyan said.

He said that in Ankara Nalbandyan will try to find out if the Turkish
authorities are planning to attend the events commemorating the 100th
year of the Armenian Genocide.

According to Deputy Chairman of Heritage Party Armen Martirosyan,
there may be some backstage talks between Armenia and Turkey, on the
one hand, and Armenia and the great powers interested in better
Armenian-Turkish relations, on the other.

“Since we are not aware if such talks are being held or not, we cannot
say if it is good or not that Armenia is attending the inauguration of
the Turkish President. Perhaps, the reason why Nalbandyan is going to
Ankara is that the great powers have promised Armenia to pressure
Turkey into opening the Armenian-Turkish border,” Martirosyan said.

Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, Conn., will host a
screening of the film Orphans of the Genocide, followed by a
question-and-answer session with the film’s writer and director, Bared
Maronian, on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m.

Orphans of the Genocide is a documentary created by the Armenoid Team
that brings to life secret
documents pertaining to the systematic Turkification campaigns of
hundreds of thousands of Armenian orphans by the Ottoman Empire.

By the end of WWI, over 150,000 Armenian children were left parentless
as a direct result of the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman
Authorities. Near East Relief commissioned by the U.S. Congress
catered to over 132,000 Armenian orphans alone. Orphans of the
Genocide includes a feature interview by Maurice Missak Kelechian,
whose findings unveiled the secrets of an orphanage in Antoura near
Beirut, Lebanon, where 1,000 Armenian Genocide orphans were being
turkified. Mr. Kelechian’s research prompted an article by
award-winning journalist Robert Fisk of The Independent magazine. This
documentary also includes testimonials from children of Armenian
Genocide orphans.

Armenian oppositionist says smooth drastic reforms possible

Armenian oppositionist says smooth drastic reforms possible

16:11 * 26.08.14

Armenia’s parliamentary opposition is able to carry out drastic
reforms without repeating Ukraine’s Maidan scenario, an opposition
lawmaker said.

“We do not have any changes on our political agenda. I would, of
course, refrain from words such as ‘heated’ or ‘sharp’, but it is
actually the [opposition] quartet that proposes a real alternative
today,” Ruben Hakobyan, the leader of the opposition Heritage faction
in parliament, told reporters on Tuesday.

Noting that their earlier reform plan (proposing 12 clauses) remained
unfulfilled by the authorities, the poliitician said he believes that
the parliamentary minority (Heritage, ARF-D, Armenian National
Congress, and Prosperous Armenia) has to have an adequate response to
that.

But he did not elaborate on the date of the possible meeting among the
opposition leaders. Hakobyan said only that their promised rally will
take place on September 30.

Asked whether the Heritage party agrees that the cabinet led by Prime
Minister Hovik Abrahamyan has failed to meet its targets, the
opposition MP said that they did not have positive expectations from
the very beginning.

But he said it doesn’t make sense to demand the government’s
resignation today. “If the September 30 [rally] doesn’t take place,
we, as [members of] Heritage, will demand a change of government. We
are obliged to raise the issue,” he added.

Armenia imports over 1 ton of guanabana this year

16:42 * 26.08.14

Armenia has imported over one ton of guanabana since January.

Speaking to Tert.am, a press secretary for the Agriculture Ministry’s
State Food Security Service, Armine Sukiasyan, said a considerable
part of the exotic fruit – one ton – came from Columbia; another six
kilograms were imported from China.

Ashot Agaghabyan, a businessman MP affiliated with the ruling
Republican faction in parliament, had earlier told the local daily
Zhoghovurd that he had signed an exceptional agreement in Ecuador to
facilitate the import of a guanabana additive that helps treat and
prevent cancer and AIDS. The paper said that the fruit was first
imported to Armenia by Artak Sargsyan, the owner of the supermarket
chain SAS.

The market price of guanabana is within the range of 80-100 Drams/kg
($0.19-$0.24)

Guanabana is grown in Africa, South America and in tropical countries.

Yerevan to host photo exhibition to demand release of Russian
photo-correspondent

YEREVAN, August 26. / ARKA /. Russian ambassador to Armenia, Ivan
Volynkin, will attend a photo exhibition in Yerevan on August 28 to be
hosted by Moscow House to demand the release of Andrei Stenin.

Stenin, a photojournalist working for Russia Today news agency, was on
assignment for the news agency and according to officials, had not
been heard from since August 5. He is feared to be held by Ukraine’s
security service SBU on charges of terrorism.

Stenin, who is based in Moscow, has covered conflicts worldwide,
including in Syria and Libya. The photographer had done extensive work
in eastern Ukraine, covering the conflict between the Ukrainian army
and pro-Russian insurgents.

Dmitry Kiselev, the CEO of Russia Today, has demanded the release of
the photo journalists. Russian Investigative Committee has launched a
criminal case into this case.

Rallies to demand the release of Stenin (#freeAndrew), were held in
Belgrade, Serbia, and in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Earlier this month, Anton Herashchenko, an aide to the Ukrainian
interior minister, said in an interview with Baltkom radio that
security forces had arrested Stenin on charges of “assisting
terrorists.” Later Herashchenko claimed he was misinterpreted, saying
he only assumed the photographer had been detained but had no precise
information.

A number of international organizations and press associations across
the world, including OSCE, Reporters Without Borders, the Committee to
Protect Journalists, the Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots
in Argentina, the Mexican Press Club and many others condemned the
alleged kidnapping of Stenin and demanded his immediate release.

Moreover, several international campaigns to support the photographer
were held internationally. On Tuesday, some 100 cars took part in a
flash mob in Madrid. As part of the campaign, the participants put
leaflets with the hashtag on their cars. -0-

The plane of Aeroflot company heading from Dubai to Moscow made an

loudly, bothering children and insulting other passengers.

man, 30-35 years old, started shouting, bothering children,” the

around 5a.m. the plane made an emergency landing at Zvartnots airport.
During a 2.5-hour landing, pilots tried to hand over the man, a
citizen of Azerbaijan, to the local police, but Armenian authorities
refused to accept him.

The doctors injected sedatives, he fell asleep and was taken to Moscow
by the same plane. The man was taken to police department in Moscow.

Armenians among casualties of California earthquake

Armenians among casualties of California earthquake

10:31, 26 August, 2014

YEREVAN, AUGUST 26, ARMENPRESS. There are Armenians recorded among the
casualties of the magnitude-6.0 quake, which hit California on August
24. Their identity and number is being clarified. The Press Service of
the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Armenia
informed “Armenpress” that by 06.30 o’clock of August 26, the number
of the casualties reached 207, over 100 buildings were damaged.

The Crisis Management Centre of the Ministry of Emergency Situations
of the Republic of Armenia got in touch with the State
Operations Center (SOC) of the State of California, which stated that
the number of those, who have suffered from the quake
continues to grow. The earthquake that jarred California’s wine
capital caused $1billion in damages, Napa County officials estimated
Monday as business owners mopped up high-end vintages that spilled
from barrels and bottles and swept away broken glass in the rush to
get the tourist hotspot back in shape for the summer’s final holiday
weekend.

With the dust still settling from Sunday’s magnitude-6.0 temblor
centred near the city of Napa, government and tourism officials
assessing its economic and structural impact encouraged visitors to
keep flocking to the charming towns, tasting rooms, restaurants and
spas that drive the Napa Valley economy.
