`7TH PAN-ARMENIAN PAINTING CONTEST’

Armenian children all over the world are invited to submit paintings for
the 7th Pan-Armenian Painting Contest. Every year, the Armenia-based
Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC),
in cooperation with its General Partner VivaCell-MTS, organizes a huge
painting contest calling on all Armenian youth from around the world to
submit their most beautiful nature paintings. The contest is an
initiative to encourage young Armenians worldwide to unite and raise
their voices for the preservation of their motherland’s unique natural
and cultural heritage.

The organizers of the painting contest invite children to express their
ideas and concerns about Armenia’s animals, landscapes, and environment
under various themes. This year’s four themes are:
1. A Story of a Bear (comics)
2. Birds of Armenia: If I had wings
3. Yerevan Zoo 2025
4. Protect the ozone layer because it protects you

Children and youth of 5-16 years old are eligible to participate in the
contest. The submission deadline is November 30th and the paintings can
be submitted online at:

The winners of the contest are selected by an independent jury and
honored with awards and certificates.

SYRIE : LES KURDES COMBATTENT EN FAMILLE LES JIHADISTES A KOBANE

Opposes a toute intervention terrestre turque, les Kurdes syriens
defendent en famille la ville de Kobane contre l’organisation
Etat islamique (EI), a affirme mardi a l’AFP le porte parole de la
principale milice kurde en Syrie.

“Il y a des centaines de soeurs, de frères, de pères et de fils, des
cousins, qui combattent côte a côte les forces de l’EI”, a indique
Polat Can, porte-parole des Unites de protection du peuple kurde
(YPG), contacte par l’AFP via internet.

“Moi-meme je lutte avec mes deux frères car il s’agit d’une question
de vie ou de mort” pour cette ville situee a quelques kilomètres
seulement de la Turquie.

M. Can a confie que des civils avaient refuse de quitter la troisième
ville kurde de Syrie, presque totalement videe de ces habitants
depuis le debut de l’offensive jihadiste le 16 septembre. “Ma mère
par exemple a refuse” de partir, a-t-il precise.

Des milliers de personnes se sont refugiees en Turquie voisine ces
dernières semaines.

Alors que l’EI, fort de sa superiorite militaire et numerique,
a reussi a penetrer lundi dans la ville, le porte-parole a reconnu
que “les munitions des YPG n’etaient pas importantes” mais qu’elles
“ne manquaient pas”, en raison de la saisie d’importantes quantites
lors des combats contre l’EI.

Interroge sur une declaration du president turc Recep Tayyip Erdogan,
qui a affirme que Kobane etait “sur le point de tomber” entre les
mains des jihadistes, M. Can s’en est pris a Ankara, affirmant que la
Turquie “aidait l’EI de toutes ses forces pour ensuite se presenter
en sauveur”.

L’armee turque a recu la semaine dernière le feu vert du Parlement pour
s’engager en Syrie comme en Irak, mais n’est pas encore intervenue.

“Nous sommes contre toute intervention militaire turque (…) si
Erdogan veut vraiment proteger Kobane comme il le pretend, qu’il
permette aux jeunes kurdes de traverser la frontière et qu’il laisse
passer les munitions”, a reagi le porte-parole des YPG.

“Erdogan n’a aucune intention de combattre l’EI (…) il veut nous
placer devant un dilemme : l’occupation de l’EI ou l’occupation
d’Erdogan”, a-t-il ajoute.

S’ils reussissaient a conquerir entièrement Kobane, les jihadistes
s’assureraient le contrôle sans discontinuite d’une longue bande de
territoire a la frontière syro-turque.

UNITED STATES USING ISIL TO ATTACK SYRIA THROUGH BACK DOOR – ANALYST

Washington has pretexted ISIL in order for the United States to carry
out military intervention in Syria, says a political commentator.

Ken Stone, with the Hamilton Coalition to Stop the War from Ontario,
told Press TV in an interview on Tuesday that the United States is
using ISIL “as a pretext to attack Syria through the back door.”

“The fact is that ISIS is a Frankenstein, a monster, that the
US created and went out of its control somewhat,” Stone stated,
mentioning the other name of ISIL.

“Now the United States is trying to reign it in,” he added.

The analyst also commented on the ongoing battle between Kurdish
forces and the ISIL Takfiri terrorists in the town of Kobani, which
is located near the Syrian border with Turkey.

“I don’t think the United States is particularly interested in helping
the people of Kobani or the Kurds in Syria defend themselves against
ISIS,” Stone said.

He argued that the issue of Kobani was “caused initially by the
United States, its allies and the Friends of Syria group, who wanted
to overthrow the legitimate government of Syria.”

The head of the Kobani Governing Council, Anwar Muslim, has said that
airstrikes carried out by the US-led coalition against ISIL positions
in Syria are not working.

“Washington seems to feel – as usual – that it is the cop of the
world; that it can go ahead without United Nations Security Council
approval and intervene where and when it feels like to mislead a
number of countries to become part of the coalition of the clueless,”
Stone stated.

The ISIL militants have been trying to seize control of Kobani since
mid-September and despite capturing nearby Kurdish villages, they
have failed to take over the town due to resistance by Kurdish forces.

On October 7, Governor of Syunik Province, Surik Khachatryan, convened
the first council meeting after his reappointment to office.

The attendees unanimously approved the agenda of the sitting. At the
end of the meeting, Mr Khachatryan addressed the community heads saying
‘we are going to work at the same pace.’ The governor instructed them
to collect tax revenues until October 20.

“If taxes are not collected, you will have to blame yourselves. You
will work at the same pace,” said Mr Khachatryan.

A recent Kremlin statement confirming Russian President Vladimir
Putin’s participation in the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) summit in
Minsk makes no mention about Armenia’s membership treaty, the paper
says, citing the official report.

Commenting on the statement, the paper suggests two possible options:
either Armenia’s membership issue has been excluded from the agenda
or the agenda submitted is not complete. If the latter scenario is
the case, then Armenia’s membership turns out not to be important
enough for the Kremlin to be referred to.

And that being the case, says the paper, Russia does not care at all
whether or not Armenia will join the economic bloc.

“The key question for Russia has been resolved after all: Armenia is
isolated from the European Union, deprived of the opportunity to sign
the EU Association Agreement,” writes the paper.

CHURCHES IN GERMANY TO PRAY TOGETHER ON 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

“Violence and terror in the name of religion cannot be justified by
anything,” the Council of Christian Churches of Germany said in a
statement adopted as a result of the General Assembly of the Council
of Christian Churches in Magdeburg.

The delegates of the Council also called on their member churches to
stand up for humane treatment of refugees. In addition, the Council
requests to mark the 100th commemoration of the Armenian genocide in
2015 with church services and prayers.

“2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the genocide committed against
the Armenians by the Ottoman Empire. For this reason, the General
Assembly adopted a Declaration. “Even after almost a century, this
event not only has a significant impact on the Armenian people,
but also on the international community,” it says in the statement.

Although there are few survivors are left, the question of recognition
of suffering and injustice remains urgent. The Council of Christian
Churches encourages its member churches and communities to mark this
commemoration with prayer and worship. Together with the World Council
of Churches it invites individual churches to pray together on April
24, 2015.”

FIGHTER JETS WITH SAINTS’ PORTRAITS APPEAR IN ARMENIA’S RUSSIAN BASE

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 7, ARMENPRESS: Pilots at a Russian airbase in Armenia
have looked no further than the highest heavens for inspiration,
painting the images of Orthodox saints on their planes in a bid
to strengthen company morale. Armenpress reports, citing The Moscow
Times that the faces of Prince Alexander Nevsky, Prince Dmitry Donskoy
and martyr Mercury Smolensky now adorn the side of three MiG-29 jet
fighters, the Southern Military District said Monday.

“The pilots are certain that having the saints’ images on the fuselages
of their military aircraft will not only protect them but will also
boost the battle morale of personnel,” the Southern Military District
was quoted as saying.

The military press service also noted that the religious images had
been painted on the right side of the aircraft to make them less
susceptible to wear-and-tear, as pilots ascend the planes from the
left, the report said.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia has continued
to maintain military facilities in a number of foreign countries,
including Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan in addition to Armenia.

IRAVUNK: POSTANJYAN THREATENS TO QUIT HERITAGE

Citing a source close to Heritage Party, Iravunk writes that the
disagreement within the party concerning the future actions of the
three non-government parties deepened so much that it is no longer
possible to speak of a united team.

The disagreements with Zaruhi Postanjyan, who has recently returned
from the United States, are particularly sharp, the newspaper says,
adding that she considers the “parliamentary three’s” rallies senseless
and running counter to the “high ideals” of democracy and she even
threatened to quit Heritage.

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

Award-winning photographer and filmmaker, Haik Kocharian traveled to
Nepal for a unique project – photographing Tibetan Buddhist
monasteries and nunneries and documenting a humanitarian healing
mission. Mr. Kocharian had unprecedented access to the intricate
aspects of spiritual and daily life in three monastic institutions in
Nepal: Pullahari Monastery, Tek Chok Ling Nunnery and Thrangu Tara
Abbey.

Sponsored by the Chödrön Foundation, the healing project was
spearheaded by Dr. Ara Bagdassarian who provided free chiropractic
services to the Tibetan monastic community in exile. Once a year,
Dr. Bagdassarian organized these mission trips across the world so
that individuals may benefit from uniquely combined physical and
spiritual healing.

The result of Mr. Kocharian’s work will be presented to the public for
the first time in an exhibition of 33 powerful images that capture the
private and intimate rituals of Buddhist monks and nuns, including
prayers and spiritual dances; intimate portraits of monks and nuns
during transformative healing sessions; as well as the unique
architecture and breathtaking nature surrounding the temples. Also on
display are photographic reproductions of astonishing hand-drawn
artwork on the walls of the Pullahari Monastery.

The selection of images invites the audience to enter the temple,
drawing the viewer inward into the spiritual and intimate world of
these Buddhist monks and nuns.

Tibetan Monastic Community in Nepal will be held at the historic
Judson Memorial Church, a sanctuary for progressive activism and
artistic expression. This landmark Christian house of worship is an
ideal venue for this interfaith art event that bridges the spiritual
and cultural divide between people of varying faiths.

A percentage of the proceeds from the sale of the photographs will be
donated to Tek Chok Ling Nunnery and Thrangu Tara Abbey.
