100km Covered, Book & Documentary Coming

Glendale, CA – On Sunday November 30, over 100 participants– walkers,
bicyclists, motorcycle riders, and supporting volunteers– in the
100km Tribute converged at the foot of the hill leading up to
Montebello’s Armenian Genocide Martyrs memorial Monument and together
marched up to it in the pouring rain.

The emotional ceremony was preceded by a “shoorch bar” to live zoorna
music while everyone was getting drenched.

“We wanted this gathering to be an affirmation. As the closeted
mourning prior to 1965 gave way to increased political awareness and
activism, then so to will 2015 be the threshold of a new era of
Armenian justice. Through our culture, convictions, and engagement,
we will restore what is rightfully ours,” explained Garen Yegparian,
one of the organizers.

Over the course of a four-day walk, hikers braved nasty blisters. One
of the bicyclists was briefly hospitalized on their tour of Los
Angeles-area Armenian schools, churches, and even the grave of
Genocide avenger Missak Torlakian. The motorcyclists, one of whom had
ridden to Los Angeles all the way from the East Coast, had to brave
the cold rain without the benefit of exercise to warm them.

Particularly poignant was the second night of the walk spent in the
Angeles National Forest’s Valley Forge campground. There is a stark
coincidence of Armenian Genocide misery and the suffering endured by
George Washington’s troops during the harsh winter they endured at the
same-named location north of Philadelphia. Seated around the
campfire, participants shared their families’ tales of survival and
sometimes post-World War I reunifications, even with Turkified
relatives. Few were the eyes that were dry that night.

Another interesting coincidence in a year fraught with such meaning
for Armenians is that the mayorships of the cities the 100km Tribute
started and ended in are held by Armenians: Glendale’s Zareh Sinanyan
and Montebello’s Jack Hadjinian. They spoke at the opening and
closing ceremonies of the 100km journey. Also speaking at these
programs were Robert Assarian (closing MC and AHA), Armen Hagobian
(ACA), George Chuldzhyan (Hye Riders), Kevork Nazarian (historian),
Jora Manoucharian (RAA) , Anthony Portantino (opening MC), Vivian
Romero (Montebello City Council), Valod Shaverdian (AHS), Garen
Yegparian (AHA).

Much of the project was enabled through the tireless efforts of the
“trails angels” who supported the walkers by setting up camp each
night and attending to countless organizational needs.

All this was recorded by Peter Musurlian who will be preparing a
documentary about the whole 100km Tribute effort with the hope of
exposing broader audiences to the Armenian saga throug feet, pedals,
and motors.

The other piece of unfinished business is the collection of
outstanding pledges, totaling some $30,000, which will fund the
publication about the architecture of Hayotz Tsor, one of the regions
of Van province. This is the first volume of 36 dedicated to
presenting Armenian history, region-by-region, of the whole country
which Research on Armenian Architecture has been preparing for over
four decades. Contributions are still being accepted at

“We are currently providing services to the Russian market and are
focused on Moscow accounting for over 50% of the Russian online

Gas Prices May Increase In Armenia Due To Dram Depreciation: Haykaka

GAS PRICES MAY INCREASE IN ARMENIA DUE TO DRAM DEPRECIATION: HAYKAKAN ZHAMANAK

12.09.2014 10:55 epress.am

Next February-March (2015) the Gazprom Armenia company may apply
to the Committee on Public Services Regulation to ‘adjust’ the bid
for the gas tariff, writes the Haykakan Zhamanak daily. “The issue
is that the current tariff is fixed at 410 AMD per dollar, while the
dollar’s current exchange rate reaches 460 AMD. While Gazprom Armenia
is buying gas from Russia with dollars ($189 per 1000 cubic meters),
the Armenian consumer pays with dram, therefore the dram’s depreciation
subsequently leads Gazprom Armenia to losses,” writes the paper.

Haykakan Zhamanak stresses that in order to avoid losses from gas
tariffs, with the current exchange value, it would need to at least
increase the tariff by 5.7% and consumers would no longer pay 156
AMD per cubic meter, but 164 AMD.

“However, taking into consideration the necessity of the tariff
increase, which almost coincides with the time-frame of Armenia
entering the EEU, it shouldn’t be ruled out that due to political
reasons the tariff increase may be delayed until the summer of 2015.”

Closed Border Hurting Eastern Turkey More Than Armenia, Says New Hra

CLOSED BORDER HURTING EASTERN TURKEY MORE THAN ARMENIA, SAYS NEW HRANT DINK FOUNDATION STUDY

Anna Muradyan

10:50, December 9, 2014

According to a recent study entitled “Research on the Socio-Economic
Impact of the Turkey-Armenia Border” commissioned by the Hrant Dink
Foundation it would appear that the closed border between the two
neighboring countries is hurting citizens on the Turkish side more
than the Armenian.

On page 73 of the study we read:

The TRA2 region (Kars, Igdır, Agrı, Ardahan),a majority of which
is located right on the border with Armenia, cannot benefit from the
opportunities offered by free trade agreements – unlike the other
regions of Turkey – due to the sealed border. The region also cannot
benefit from the indirect trade between Armenia and Turkey as the
border is closed and these goods get shipped from regions close to
Georgia or Iran borders. Besides, since the existing trade with Armenia
is not legal and comes at a high transit cost, due to the sealed land
border, the volume of the existing trade remains very limited.

According to Zumrut İmamoglu, a Research Associate at Bahcesehir
University’s Center for Economic and Social Research, Turkey’s opening
the border with Armenia would not only mean economic development and
growth for the residents of Kars, but also a window to communicate
with the outside world.

“People say that their lives end at the border and that they want to
change that end point and to feel free. There are those who say that
Turkey, by keeping the border closed, is penalizing the residents of
Kars and not Armenia,” says İmamoglu, who presented the conclusions of
the study at a two day conference held in Ankara on November 22 and 23.

The study also concludes that despite the small scale of Armenia’s
economy, opening the border would benefit the eastern regions of
Turkey substantially.

On page 75, we read:

It is estimated that employment in the border region will increase
approximately by fifty percent within a period of five years in case
of opening up of the Armenia border. Retail trade, accommodation and
transportation sectors are amongst those that are expected to grow.

The study findings suggest that the opening of the border will not
only increase transit trade but will also have real impact on the
regional economy.

The study notes that residents of the Kars Province (located in
Turkey’s TRA2 development zone; the least developed in Turkey) have
been migrating. Fourteen years ago the region had a population of
325,000. That number now stands at 78,000.

During her presentation İmamoglu noted that residents complained
that they couldn’t take advantage of the trade taking place with
Armenia since it now passes through Georgia.

On page 73 we read:

While Turkey continues to trade with all the neighbouring countries
in her land borders, with or without signed free trade agreements,
her border with Armenia remains sealed since 1993. This is indeed
the only closed land border in Turkey. Besides, import and export
activities with Armenia are carried out through indirect channels
and in limited volumes. There are anecdotes and accounts referring to
the limited volume of goods being exported to Armenia through other
countries (Georgia, Iran). According to the estimates from Armenia,
every year goods worth US$300 million are imported from Turkey. 1 On
the other hand, official data in Turkey gives us different figures;
exports to Armenia were US$241,000 in 2012, and imports from Armenia
were US$222,000.

Given that Kars has no manufacturing base, the Turkish government has
tried to encourage people to stay and work in the region by lifting
tax obligations.

“But people say they would rather be registered as unemployed and
receive benefits rather than paying social security to the state,”
says the researcher.

The study concludes that if the border would open the number of
registered private sector workers would increase 7% every year in
the region.

“One of the most terrible things is that people have lost the
optimism and will to live. They say it’s like they’ve been covered
with graveyard dirt and are slowly dying,” İmamoglu said.

Former Kars mayor Naif Alibeyoglu says that if residents knew that
the border would open they’d invest in the region and build plants

Alibeyoglu has always spoken in favor of opening the border and
normalizing relations between Turkey and Armenia.

During his tenure in office, Alibeyoglu launched a campaign in 2005
in which 50,000 inhabitants of Kars signed a petition for open borders
and submitted their common demand to the government.

Sayat Tekir, an Istanbul Armenia researcher who conducted interviews
on both sides of the closed border, says that he found people on
either side to be excited about the prospect of an open border.

“However, at the same time, they also felt fear, saying that they
do not recognize those living on the other side and that while they
freely walk the streets on their side, they don’t know what will
happen if the border is opened,” Tekir says.

Regarding the past history of the region, we read the following policy
recommendation on page 76 of the study:

It is necessary for the region to lay claim to its historical past and
to, once again, receive all the people who have lived here with open
arms in order for it to be able to evaluate the tourism potential of
the region. Hence it is imperative for the historical fabric of the
city to be preserved, for the sites of ruins to be maintained and for
new archaeological excavations and similar activities to be initiated.

P.S. The “Research on the Socio-Economic Impact of the Turkey-Armenia
Border” was commissioned by the Hrant Dink Foundation with the support
of TUSİAD (Industry and Business Association of Turkey) and Istanbul
Policy Center (IPC). The study was conducted by two institutions
reputable in their fields: BETAM (BahceÃ…~_ehir University Center for
Economic and Social Research) and SAM (Social Research Center)

Azerbaijan Seeks To Derail Negotiation Process

AZERBAIJAN SEEKS TO DERAIL NEGOTIATION PROCESS

16:37 * 09.12.14

It is obvious to all the sides concerned over and well-informed of
the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict that the priority aim of Azerbaijan’s
provocations is to derail the peace process, Artak Zakaryan,
Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, Parliament of Armenia,
told Tert.am as he commented on the Tuesday incident, which claimed
an Armenian serviceman’s life.

“Azerbaijan is ready for any mean act,” Mr Zakaryan said.

The Azerbaijani leadership’s actions are aimed at their own people,
which is a means of diverting public attention from Azerbaijan’s
domestic problems – human rights and social management.

“However, Azerbaijan’s priority aim is to derail the peace process,”
the MP said.

It is time for the international community to make specifically
addressed statements and calls.

“The mediators’ status is clear in the context of the OSCE Minsk Group,
which implies a certain approach.

However, we should consider the fact that, as a party to the conflict,
Azerbaijan is making use of the need for diplomatic language in a
cynical manner and seeking to force the peace process to stop following
its normal course. It is Azerbaijan’s style and it is retaliation
that can keep Azerbaijan from its cynical actions,” Mr Zakaryan said.

According to him, diplomatic means in combination with military means
could curb Azerbaijan’s aggression.

“We should consider the fact that our aim is a comprehensive
and peaceful settlement of the conflict and full exercise of
Nagorno-Karabakh’s right to self-determination.”

“Azerbaijan must feel the international community’s attitude and,
should it derail the peace process, it will become a target for the
international community, which Azerbaijan fails to realize now,”
Mr Zakaryan said.

Larisa Alaverdyan, Armenia’s first omnudsman who now heads the NGO
Against the Violation of Law, said not only the countries representing
the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s Minsk Group
but also British Petroleum (for which Azerbaijan is a colony) have
economically made clear that they would now allow any large-scale
armed incidents or war.

“That’s why Azerbaijan is doing everything typical to bandits. So it
will never change its policies,” she noted.

As for the international organizations’ reaction, Alaverdyan said
she doesn’t think that their statements are a sufficient tool to
restrain the country. “If the Council of Europe, of which Azerbaijan
is now chair, deprived the country of the right to vote, as well as
presidency against the backdrop of these incidents and the persecutions
against human rights activists, that would be a signal,” she added.

L’UNESCO Reconnait Le Lavash Armenien Malgre L’opposition De L’Azerb

L’UNESCO RECONNAIT LE LAVASH ARMENIEN MALGRE L’OPPOSITION DE L’AZERBAIDJAN

ARMENIE

etre attendu a l’avenir.

y a trois mois.

Holocaust In Africa

HOLOCAUST IN AFRICA

In his interesting reflection on the Armenian Holocaust (1 December),
Robert Fisk notes the involvement of members of the Kaiser’s army who
later turned up in Hitler’s Wehrmacht “helping to organise the mass
killing of Jews”, thus illustrating an instructive German involvement
in the two holocausts.

However, he overlooks the first holocaust of the 20th century –
which was not in Armenia but German South West Africa (now Namibia),
where the indigenous Herero people were systematically rounded up
into concentration camps and massacred to make way for the Kaiser’s
“place in the sun”. The Reichskommissar in charge of creating this
German Lebensraum (living space) was Heinrich Goering, whose son,
Hermann, would become Hitler’s Reichsmarschall.

Nor was it a coincidence that many Nazi functionaries who learnt
their trade in the German colonies would – in the words of Viktor
Bottcher, Governor of Posen in 1939 (and a former civil servant in
the German Cameroon) – go on “to perform in the east of the Reich
the constructive work they had once carried out in Africa”.

Thus the holocausts of the 20th century reveal a sinister link in
the mentality of colonial contempt for supposedly “inferior” people.
