DOCUMENTARY PLANNED ON ARMENIAN CONFECTIONER IN IRELAND

Did you ever hear the one about the Armenian law student who fled
Turkey over a hundred years ago, set up a sweet shop in Cork and
became world famous? The story of Harutiun Batmazian and his shop
Hadji Bey will be the subject of a documentary on TG4 in December.

Filming is taking place this month in and around Cork but the director
of the programme is looking for a loan of any photographs, artifacts,
posters, adverts, letters or film footage from the shop that Corkonians
have. RoseAnn Foley would also love to hear any anecdotes or stories
that people have about the shop, its founder or its product.

“It’s a fascinating story I heard about, so I decided to make a
programme about it. I’m from Waterford but I’d heard of the sweets
all my life. People have already been calling me with stories and
anecdotes about the shop,” she said.

“If your readers have old photographs of the shop, of Harutiun
Batmazian himself, of members of his family, or any artifacts from
the shop on McCurtain Street, I’d love to hear from them.”

RoseAnn got the idea to make the programme after talking to her friend
Rose Daly, who runs The Chocolate Shop in the English Market with her
husband Niall. They reported that they got loads of enquires about
Hadji Bey sweets at Christmas and people were full stories about the
shop and the Turkish Delight sold there.

The founder of Hadji Beys, Harutiun Batmazian, was born in Armenia. As
a young man he went to Constantinople, now Istanbul, to go to college
to study law. While there he worked in a shop that sold Turkish
Delights and learned how to make the sweets.

He was forced to flee the Ottoman Empire when the Turks instigated
pogroms against Christian Armenians.

He arrived in Cork around the time of the International Exhibition
of 1902-3. He had his own stall at the exhibition. Afterwards, he
started manufacturing his own sweets and selling then.

Despite having no English, he set up his sweet shop, Hadji Bey et Cie
on MacCurtain Street in what is now the Metropole Hotel and lived at
St Patrick’s Terrace. The store subsequently became a Cork institution.

The Hadji Bey products became successful and much sought after
throughout Ireland, where the business thrived for several decades.

Harutiun’s son, Edward, took over the family business and ran it
until the 1970s. After his retirement, the company went into decline
and until recently it was a distant memory.

Hadji Bey was relaunched last year by a Kildare-based company, Urney
Chocolates, using the original ornate packaging. The sweets are now
for sale in The Chocolate Shop in the English Market.

The half hour documentary will be broadcast on Sunday, 18 December
on TG4.

Couldn’t Keep Silent

COULDN’T KEEP SILENT

Politics

As we speak, 100 people are standing in front of the presidential
residence with the demand for Serzh Sargsyan to come out of the
building and are calling him a coward hiding behind bars.

They are the participants of the “Action of Those Dressed in Black”
who marched from the government building.

The action participants blame Serzh Sargsyan for the murders taking
place in the army as the Commander-in-Chief.

Some participants are mothers of soldiers who were murdered in peace
and they are holding the photos of their sons.

It was assumed that the action would be silent, but the participants
couldn’t keep silent and are screaming in front of the residence.

“We’ve stayed silent for this long and we can’t stay silent any
longer,” one of the parents said.

Armenian Ambassador’s Words Crippled In Azerbaijan

ARMENIAN AMBASSADOR’S WORDS CRIPPLED IN AZERBAIJAN

PanARMENIAN.Net
September 8, 2011 – 20:07 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Charles Aznavour , Armenia’s ambassador to
Switzerland, renowned singer’s words were crippled by Turkish media.

Particularly, Aznavour mentioned that for facilitating dialogue with
Turkey and opening of the Armenian-Turkish border, Armenians need to
use a word other than Genocide, as reported by Turkish HaberTurk.

Moreover, due to such statements the singer faced criticism by the
French-Armenian community,” according to the agency.

However, the shorthand record of the conversation with a French TV
journalist makes the singer’s intention clear. To the journalist’s
question Aznavour noted that the word Genocide makes him uneasy. If
this word embarrasses the Turks, it can be replaced with another word
for establishing relationships with them. According to the ambassador
it is not the word that is going to assess the tragedy. “The fact
remains, that Turks wanted to massacre Armenians.”

Commenting on Turkish Government’s denial policy, Aznavour noted that
it is rather a matter of honor which will be sullied after recognizing
the fact.

Media spread reports that Charles Aznavour called on replacing the
word Genocide, with it hampering the establishment of good neighborly
relations. He also expressed wish to visit Turkey noting that they
are a good nation.

Shavarsh Kocharyan: Our Position Is Invulnerable From The Viewpoint

SHAVARSH KOCHARYAN: OUR POSITION IS INVULNERABLE FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF INTERNATIONAL LAW

The definition of military aggression does not lose its international
strength, even if its object is not internationally recognized yet,
Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Shavarsh Kocharyan stated during
today’s “New Approaches to NKR Issue” scientific conference in Yerevan.

According to him, basic international documents do not create
contradiction between laws of self-determination right of people
and territorial integrity, which would not allow the NK issue to
find solution. “Self-determination right of peoples is completely
compatible with UN goals,” Shavarsh Kocharyan said.

“Armenia had a full right to support realization of self-determination
of NK people. For other countries it can be also considered a
duty,” the Deputy Foreign Minister stressed, adding that definition
of aggression in the UN resolution is considered as use of force
against self-authority of another country, territorial inviolability
or political independence. “But I want to draw the attention to
the thing that in the given case the definition of state is not
determined by affiliation with the United Nations. Hence, here
internationally unrecognized states can be involved as well. So our
position is invulnerable from the viewpoint of international law. As
for our rival, it distorts internationally accepted thesis,” Shavarsh
Kocharyan stated.

“Financing of Highest Education” international two-day conference
launched today in Yerevan organized by the Education and Science
Ministry. Welcoming the guests, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan said
the conference will contribute to the development of Bologna process.

“It is a great honor for me to receive all the participants of the
conference and it is a great honor for me to co-chair the Bologna
process together with Poland”, the prime minister said, adding that
the special symbol of conduction of the conference in Yerevan is the
20th anniversary of Armenia’s independence.

Tigran Sargsyan said the educational system is one of the priorities
of the government. “We have stated that we see the future of Armenia
only in creation of knowledge-based economy and formation of the
knowledge-based society”, Tigran Sargsyan said, noting that it may
be acquired by having contemporary universities. The prime minister
said our vision coincides with the developments taking place in Europe.

“During the 20 years of independence the transformation of the highest
education system has passed a long path having formed best educational
traditions but at the same time we need progress and reforms”, Armen
Ashotyan, education and science minister said, noting that Armenia
has financing issues. Highly assessing the reforms in the sphere,
the minister said that the high-quality higher education is both
public goodness and business.

Polish ambassador to Armenia Zdzislaw Raczynski said his function
is to promote Bologna process. “Even the highest ideas are born from
small actions. Your actions promote not only development of education
system but the formation of united Europe”, the ambassador said.

Armenia and Poland assumed the co-chairmanship of the Bologna process
in July 1 2011 till December 31.

How To Avoid Incorrect Mapping

HOW TO AVOID INCORRECT MAPPING

Geographer and cartographer Grigor Beglaryan spoke about “correct”
and “incorrect” maps today.

“Many maps today present the territory of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic
within the borders of the former Autonomous Region of Nagorno Karabakh
. This is a mistake, since the current borders of Nagorno Karabakh are
different and are fixed by the Constitution of the Nagorno Karabakh
Republic, which declared its independence 20 years ago,” he said.

To avoid incorrect mapping, it’s necessary to take today’s realities
into consideration, and establish state control of the sphere, Grigor
Beglaryan said. “The infringers should be subject to administrative
or financial punishment,” he added.

Another problem Beglaryan spoke about is connected with the names
of geographical locations, particularly the cities of Alaverdi and
Akhtala. The settlements were called Pghndzahank and Artsatahang in
the past, but the local population refused to rename the cities in
a referendum, and the issue remains unsolved up until now.

MP: Individual Approach To Be Shown To Each Draftee

MP: INDIVIDUAL APPROACH TO BE SHOWN TO EACH DRAFTEE

PanARMENIAN.Net
September 8, 2011 – 16:44 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Individual approach should be shown to each draftee
at draft.

“Army begins with draft, and we are not pleased with the situation
where draftees do not receive individual approach,” Hrayr Karapetyan,
Chairman of the NA Standing Committee on Defense, National Security and
Internal Affairs, ARF Dashnaktsutyun deputy told a press conference
in Yerevan. Karapetyan emphasized that cases of drafting sick people
must be excluded. He also struck the note that special approach on
placement of draftees in military units must be invested, particularly
considering their education. He noted that such elements are already
emerging, namely regarding doctors, programmers, physicist, however
such an approach must be enhanced.

Here Karapetyan said that legislative amendments regulating draft
and military service are being planned. He particularly noted that
granting furlough to soldiers will be regulated by legislation. “It is
not up to commanders subjective decision whether to grant a furlough
to a soldier after 6 months,” Karapetyan noted. He also mentioned
that this autumn saw the adoption of a range of statutes regulating
military service in separate spheres. The General Statute on armed
forces is planned to be discussed in autumn.

Tanks, Not Tourists

TANKS, NOT TOURISTS
Naira Hayrumyan

Lragir.am News

14:52:09 – 08/09/2011

Our precondition is simple: let Russian tanks leave and Russian
tourists arrive, said yesterday the President of Georgia Mikhail
Saakashvili proposing his own concept of relations with Russia.

Russia understands protest by countries which owe to it (political
and economic debts are meant) as an infringement of foreign countries
(to read the U.S.) on the Russian interests. The anti-Russian foreign
interference causes the intention to empower the CSTO forces as
internal gendarmerie.

Russia persuades its people and the people of its sputnik countries
that any act of opposing, any criticism of the government, especially
anti-Russian statements, such as in Belarus, are initiated and financed
by the West. It says it is not aimed at democratic transition,
it is aimed at weakening Moscow’s influence on the traditionally
“Russian” regions.

By and large, the countries which chose true democratic transition,
practicing transparency of public policy, liberal economy, fighting
corruption, defending human rights and freedoms are outside Russia’s
influence. And above all, it is because Russia can’t offer these
things to its allies.

It offers tanks, offers high price of gas, not to mention the
vocabulary that is used in conversations with the presidents. Even
in public policy, Moscow’s political scientists do not hide the fact
that they refer to some countries as an outpost, “younger brother”
and “prodigal sons”.

In fact, if it is found that the U.S. financed opposition movement,
or awards grants to civic organizations and media in Armenia, Russia
could make the country’s leadership recognize protest as “a violation
of the constitutional order” by foreign countries. And, accordingly,
deploy its troops.

And again tanks, not tourists.

Yerevan State Linguistic University dedicated to the 20th anniversary
of proclamation of Karabakh’s independence.

Rector of the university, political analyst Suren Zolyan said such
conferences help to form right idea about today’s Nagorno Karabakh. He
said NK currently faces two groups of issues – inner and outer. “In
the inner respect the important thing is that Nagorno Karabakh is
implementing all the functions of a state and it is obvious that it is
developing day by day”, Zolyan said. Referring to the outer issues,
the YSLU rector said the core issue is the international recognition
of the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh and a great work is needed for it.

Highlighting the conduction of the conference, member of the Armenian
National Assembly Tigran Torosyan said that working out theoretical
approaches over the issue is very important for applying them in
future in negotiating process.

Representatives of Artsakh State University, RA National Academy
of Sciences, individual analysts, experts, students participate in
