Armenian, Greek Genocides In Turkish Film-Makers’ Movie?

ARMENIAN, GREEK GENOCIDES IN TURKISH FILM-MAKERS’ MOVIE?

Tert.am
15:10 29.10.11

Turkish film-makers have decided to produce a movie featuring the
genocides of Armenians and Greeks in the World War I period.

According to Akunq.net, a website covering the latest developments
on Western Armenian communities, a central character in the film is
Topal Osman, a Trurkish man who was among the perpetrators of the
Armenian and Pontic Greek massacres.

The film shooting, which reportedly costs 2 million Turkish Liras
(approx. $1 million), will begin on November 4. The actors’ team
includes 30 people.

Osman, who ruled a gang until 1914, was recruited by the senior staff
of Turkish special agencies to plot the genocide against Armenians. He
was responsible from clearing the Black Sea region from the Armenian
population. With his gang of man-slaughterers freed from jail,
he took part in the displacement of people from Ardvin, killing
numerous Armenians.

In 1919, already wanted by the Istanbul Military Tribunal, Osman met
with Mustafa Kemal. After the meeting, the Sultan Vahdettin annulled
the decree to arrest him. Osman later became a member of a national
rights protection organization (Muhafaza-i Hukuk-u Milliye Cemiyeti).

He succeeded in his efforts to suppress anti-Kemalist figures and
clear the Black Sea region from Greeks. Osman subjected Pontic Greeks
to hellish torments and tortures, burying them alive in graves they
had been forced to dig or burning their bodies in boat steamers or
skinning them.

ANKARA: Armenia Sends Aid For Turkish Quake Survivors

ARMENIA SENDS AID FOR TURKISH QUAKE SURVIVORS

Today’s Zaman, Turkey
Oct 28 2011

Armenian aid crew arrived in Erzurum on Friday.

Armenia has sent a plane to Turkey as part of international aid that
started pouring into the country since Monday yet it is distant that
it could play a role in bringing the two foes together.

Gagik Kostandyan, an official from Armenia, told reporters in Erzurum
airport where the aid plane landed on Friday afternoon, that Armenian
President Serzh Sarksyan called President Abdullah Gul and expressed
Armenia’s readiness to send aid.

Kostandyan said the Armenian government sent 111 tents in different
sizes, 4,345 blankets, 36 beds, 6 bedsheets, 474 sleeping bags.

The Armenian official said Turkey did not accept food aid but asked
for tents, recalling that Armenia also sent aid to Turkey in 1999
earthquake.

He added that Armenia always sent aid and it is the first time that
Armenians came to Turkey. “We are ready to offer every kind of support
if needed. We would like the two countries to enjoy good relations.

This is a humanitarian aid. We are two neighboring countries,”
Kostandyan stressed.

Speaking during a visit to Saudi Arabia Embassy in Ankara to express
his condolences over the death of Saudi Crown Prince, Foreign Minister
Ahmet Davutoglu said while commenting on aid from Armenia that these
tragic days could be seen as a way for reconcilitation among nations
and countries. Recalling that Turkey always sent humanitarian aid
to other countries regardless of recepient’s religion, ethnicity,
sect or political view.

“We always accepted humanitarian aid with gratitude, no matter who
sends it,” Davutoglu said. But Davutoglu ruled out that aid from Israel
and Armenia will play a role in reconciliation with the countries. “Our
position is known in political problems,” Davutoglu underlined.

ANKARA: Quake Cracks Dome Of Ancient Armenian Church In Van

QUAKE CRACKS DOME OF ANCIENT ARMENIAN CHURCH IN VAN

Today’s Zaman, Turkey
Oct 28 2011

The 10th-century Armenian Church of the Holy Cross on Akdamar (Ahtamar)
Island in Lake Van has a crack in its dome because of the magnitude
7.2 earthquake that struck the province of Van on Sunday.

Officials said their initial observations show that there is no other
serious damage to the church but they are waiting for the aftershocks
to end before evaluating the whole structure of the church.

The Armenian Orthodox Church of the Holy Cross occupies a special
place in medieval Armenian art and architecture. In September 2010,
95 years after religious services ended, the church was reopened as a
museum and operated by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Religious
service is allowed only once a year at the church.

Meanwhile, officials said that buildings belonging to charitable
foundations in Van were not harmed by the quake. Among them is the
450-year-old Husrev PaÅ~_a Medresesi.

However, the minarets of the Husrev PaÅ~_a Mosque and the Kaya Celebi
Mosque have visible cracks.

BAKU: Solving Karabakh Conflict In A Way Not Suiting Baku Will Provo

SOLVING KARABAKH CONFLICT IN A WAY NOT SUITING BAKU WILL PROVOKE NEW HOSTILITIES

news.az, Azerbaijan
Oct 28 2011

News.Az interviews Zahid Oruj, member of Milli Majlis, the Parliament
of Azerbaijan.

The OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs have said in their next statement that
“the contact line cannot be an eternal barrier between neighboring
states.” What is the reason for increasing statements from the
co-chairs that it is unacceptable to maintain the status quo is
Karabakh conflict?

The current statement by the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs is different
from previous ones to some extent because if in recent past they
were coming up with various proposals and a model of the conflict
resolution trying to bring the conflicting parties to the compromise.

But now amid increased likelihood of resumed hostilities in the region,
they issue statements calling the parties to avoid escalation.

Worthy of note is that Armenia has stored the bulk of its weapons in
Nagorno-Karabakh over the past period to conceal its large quantities
of weapons from the OSCE mission and shape a formal opinion that it
complies with arms control agreement for the South Caucasus.

Moreover, Armenia has begun to hold military exercises in occupied
lands of Azerbaijan more often. Possibly, some believe this is an
integral part of information war or an attempt to take preventive
measures amid growing military, diplomatic and economic potential
of Azerbaijan.

However, reportedly, Armenia seeks to make provocative action on the
contact line of troops to provoke Azerbaijan to resume hostilities.

That is why the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs make unsuccessful calls to
the parties to withdraw snipers from the contact line of troops. Of
course, these calls apply to the Armenian side first and foremost
because it is Armenia who accumulates weapons in the occupied lands
which kill Azerbaijani civilians.

In other words, the world community saw maintaining status quo in
Karabakh conflict as it major accomplishment earlier. But now it
becomes clear that unresolved conflict may deal a blow to their
strategic goals in the region.

Does it mean that world community, which solved a number of similar
problems earlier, has more interest to resolve Armenia-Azerbaijan
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict?

I believe a time has come when the world community has begun to pay
more attention to resolution of the Karabakh problem. At current
situation unresolved Karabakh conflict begins to deal a real blow to
Russia’s interests as ongoing conflict enables the West to maintain
its interests in the region.

On the other hand, the West is aware that preserving status quo is
fraught with unpredictable consequences, since resumption of war can
cause irreparable damage to their strategic interests.

I say this once again that the status quo should be changed for this
reason. However, the main point is that in whose favor this status
quo will change. Resolving Karabakh conflict in a way not suiting
Azerbaijan will pave a way for a new war. This is inevitable.

Following French President Nicolas Sarkjozy’s recent visit to the
South Caucasus, some observers said that France begins to play the
role of mediator in the Karabakh conflict settlement.

Meanwhile, President Dmitriy Medvedev said recently at a meeting
with his Armenian counterpart in Moscow that Russia would continue to
play an active role in resolving the conflict between Azerbaijan and
Armenia. Can active mediation of Moscow or Paris play a significant
role in resolving the Karabakh conflict?

Once while implementing his economic reforms Chinese politician
Deng Xiaoping stated that a result is more important for him. In the
meantime, he uttered his already famous aphorism that “it does not
matter what color is the cat, so long as it catches mice.” Azerbaijan
adheres to a similar stance in resolving Karabakh conflict.

Over the long period which Karabakh conflict has remained unresolved,
different countries came up with various proposals in a bid to boost
their position in the region, or use their intensified efforts to put
pressure on either side of the conflict. Much effort was made by the
U.S., Russia and France at various times. Russia, as evidenced by
secret documents, in order to neutralize accusations from the West
that it intends to occupy the South Caucasus, has begun to arrange
meetings between the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan since 2008
despite it is not interested in resolving the Karabakh conflict.

At that time, even the staunchest skeptics hoped that Moscow’s active
mediation will help return at least three or four occupied districts
of Azerbaijan and an option of the Karabakh conflict resolution which
would serve the interests of Russia will emerge.

It was felt that President Medvedev intends to take certain steps in
this direction. Perhaps Medvedev believes that the resolution of the
Karabakh conflict will weaken Western influence in the South Caucasus,
giving Russia a distinctive status in the region.

However, these intentions were never realized as Russian political
elite did not change their stance. Therefore, Moscow is irritated that
at increased efforts by Paris to solve the Karabakh conflict. Moscow
believes that solving Karabakh conflict through mediation of Western
countries means a blow to Russia’s interests.

Nevertheless, I believe that Azerbaijan will be able to change
entrenched situation in the region, the system of relations of the
great powers towards the region and thereby achieve a solution to
the problem in its favor in the near future.

Remembering Dr. Jacob Orphali

REMEMBERING DR. JACOB ORPHALI

Dr. Jacob Orphali
A year has passed since the community lost one of its more
compassionate and generous members, Dr. Jacob Orphali, who died
unexpectedly on October 14, 2010. Dr. Orphali will always be remembered
for his warmth, humor, but most important, for his generosity and
compassion toward his family, friends, patients and his unwavering
commitment to elevate Armenian community institutions.

Dr. Orphali was born on December 3, 1948 in Beirut, Lebanon. He was
the second child of Joseph and Hermine Orphali, who left Palestine
as a consequence of World War II and made their home in Lebanon.

Some time later and due to work considerations the Orphalis moved
to Jordan, where Jacob attended the local Armenian school and later
completed his studies at the Amman State High School.

1968 was a fortuitous year for Jacob. He received word that he was
accepted into the Yerevan Medical University. So, the 18-year-old
Jacob moved to Armenia to complete his studies.

In the shadow of Mount Ararat and on the soil of his homeland, he
worked hard and received his medical degree, with high honors. He
moved to the United States to complete his doctorate degree and
finished his residency in Gary, Indiana.

In 1984 he became a Medical Doctor specializing in family medicine
and set-up his practice in Los Angeles.

That same year, Jacob met his life partner, Verona Meliksetian, with
whom he married and created his traditional Armenian family. The
Orphalis were blessed with three children, Jayna, Raffi and Cindy,
who became the light of Jacob and Verona’s life.

Jacob was of the second generation of Genocide survivors, who as a
result of the great calamity were forced to rebuild their lives from
scratch, through determination and belief in God as only Armenians can.

Jacob’s family was poor and lacked resources, so the late Jacob was
forced to work and study at a very early age. At the young age of
10 he worked with his father and uncle, who were cobblers. Then he
worked in the printing field and later as a jeweler and then at a
photography studio.

Before graduating high school, Jacob was already an accomplished
photographer and was able to make a living and also support his family.

Despite the dire financial condition of the Orphali family, Jacob’s
mother, Hermine, always insisted and encouraged Jacob to continue his
studies and become a doctor. Heeding his mother’s encouraging words,
Jacob applied and was accepted to the Yerevan Medical University and
arrived in the Armenian capital, Yerevan, with $10 in his pocket. This
is when Jacob starts wrestling with life’s realities and strives to
better himself through hard work and perseverance to reach his goals.

Dr. Orphali with his wife, Verona and children Jaina, Rafi and Cindy

It wouldn’t be fair to describe Jacob as just a doctor. He was more
than. First and foremost he was a human being-in capital letters. He
had an eternal love for his family, his friends and acquaintances,
and more importantly for his homeland, the Armenian language, culture
and the Armenian Church.

Jacob firmly believed that it was better to give that to receive
and therefore his door was open to all, without exception, be they
a political office holder, the Catholicos or a poor worker; be they
a colleague or a stranger.

It is difficult to describe the manner in which he treated people,
young and old. His heart was filled with love for all.

Jacob’s commitment to his nation and the church was evident from
a young age when he became a cub scout and a boy scout, and as an
adult he was a national delegate representing the Pasadena Armenian
Apostolic Church and later a member of the Western Prelacy Executive
Council and constant and generous supporter of community organizations
and institutions.

During the worst days of the Nagorno-Karabakh liberation struggle, Dr.

Jacob Orphali spared nothing to morally and financially assist the
heroic people of Artsakh, and continued his contribution until his
untimely death. He and his wife, Verona, became active members of the
Armenian National Committee where they gave their utmost to ensure
the success and advancement of the Armenian Cause.

For Jacob, his homeland, Armenia was a sacred altar to which he bowed
and dedicated himself.

Jacob was a staunch supporter of Armenian culture and he often
sponsored cultural events and projects. In 1999, through his leadership
and dedicated work, the Yerevan Medical University was able to have
a modern library on the occasion of the school’s 70th anniversary.

As a physician, Jacob became one of the first Armenian doctors to
become Board Certified and later he deservedly became the chairman
of the well-renowned Hollywood Presbyterian and St. Joseph hospitals.

Jacob Orphali was dedicated to his field and his specialty. Hundreds
of people can attest to the level of care they have received from the
late doctor. For many years, Dr. Orphali had designated Wednesdays
as the day when he would treat patients free of charge, providing
care and medical attention to a wide-spectrum of people and earning
their respect and love.

For 50 years Jacob worked relentlessly, without once thinking about
his comfort or taking vacations. He had decided that in 2011 he would
lighten his workload and take his family to visit Amman, Jordan to
show his children the place of his humble beginnings and the place
that provided him the impetus to flourish and success. Unfortunately,
his untimely death put an end to those plans and dreams.

His death is mourned by his family, his brothers and sisters, his
relatives, friends, colleagues, patients-everyone. His passing is a
big loss for the Armenian community of which Dr. Jacob Orphali was
a venerable member.

Orphali Family Thanks the Community Verona, Jaina, Rafi and Cindy
Orphali would like to thank all their friends and relatives who
donated to the Dr. Jacob Orphali Memorial Fund established within
the Armenian Cultural Foundation.

The fund was established with Dr. Orphali’s long time dream of helping
poor Armenian youth in Armenia, Artsagh and Javagh. He always fondly
remembered his youthful days going to school in Armenia and wanted
to give back to the homeland.

Every year the fund will make a grant to the Armenian Youth Federation
project that best reaches out to at risk youth in Armenia, Artsakh
and Javakhk. This past summer the AYF submitted a proposal to the
family and we made a grant to the Youth Corps Program. “Jacob’s Grant”
helped the Youth Corps open three children camps in Armenia and one
in Artsakh. We know Jacob would be thrilled to learn that 600 at
risk Armenian children attended these camps at absolutely no cost to
their families.

Twenty-five Diasporan volunteers served as counselors for the neediest
children in each region, providing them with educational lectures,
revolutionary/patriotic song practice, arts and crafts, games,
daily meals, help learning English, discussions about the fate of
Armenia and much more. The children overflowed the capacity at each
camp! The positive reactions from local parents showed that the camps
and counselors truly touched the lives of the young campers.

For the counselors involved, serving the youth directly on the ground
helped them build a stronger connection with their homeland. As much
as they gave, they received even more in return.

Thank you all for helping start this program we intend to continue it.

the third time, noting that Armenia is actively involved in CIS
integration processes and is for further expansion of relations
between CIS states. Stressing that the transport infrastructure and
particularly, the rail communication, occupies an important place in
CIS economic ingredient, President Serzh Sargsyan noted that there
is certain progress in development of rail transport in Armenia. But
our country still faces issues in the context of development of
interregional rail communication.

Chairman of CIS Council for Rail Transport and “Russian Railways”
Vladinir Yakunin expressed gratitude to President Serzh Sargsyan for
hosting the council in Armenia for a regular time and for permanent
attention paid to rail issues.

He attached importance to the strategic development program of rail
transport adopted at the sitting of the CIS Council for Heads of
Government held lately in Saint Petersburg.

Arman Melikyan About Preliminary Refusal Of Turkey: Playing Theater

ARMAN MELIKYAN ABOUT PRELIMINARY REFUSAL OF TURKEY: PLAYING THEATER WAS NOT RIGHT

ARMENPRESS
16:52, 28 October, 2011

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 28, ARMENPRESS: Armenia’s offer to show humanitarian
support to Turkey on the occasion of the destructive earthquake
occurred in Van was a humanitarian step. Commenting on the preliminary
refusal of Turkey, former NKR Foreign Minister Arman Melikyan noted
that it was understandable: Armenia offered support, and after thinking
a lot Turkey took note.

“Playing theater was not a right thing, but we are, in all appearances,
theater-loving peoples,” Mr. Melikyan said, adding that this cannot
be explained otherwise. “We had to propose and we proposed, we were
asked to send, and we sent, we cannot do anything more expressive,”
he stressed.

To remind, from the Armenian government 40 tones cargo is being
transported to Erzrum town, Turkey – more than 100 tents, 500 sleeping
bags and over 7000 bed accessories.
