ERDOGAN CALLS ON SARKOZY TO REMEMBER HIS OTTOMAN ROOTS

In his rant against the French Senate’s passage of the genocide
denial bill, Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan has made mention of French
President Sarkozy’s “Ottoman roots”.

Erdogan has said that Sarkozy’s grandfather was a Jew born in Salonika,
then part of the Ottoman Empire, where his ancestors had fled from
persecution in Spain.

“Regardless of how much enmity he has against Turkey, [Sarkozy] is
someone whose roots are linked to the Ottoman Empire and whose history
intersects with that of Turkey. No matter how racist the approach he
adopts, he cannot get rid of his past and overshadow the Ottomans’
tolerance,” Erdogan said.

“We will not give this petty racist mindset the honor of hassling
Turkey. We will act with the common sense and dignity of a great
country,” he added.

On January 25 and 26 Edward Nalbandyan will visit Latvia and Lithuania
to meet with the governments of these states. The visit of the foreign
minister of Armenia is interesting as it coincides with the visit of
the Turkish foreign minister to Moscow on January 25.

The point is that after the independence of Armenia the Baltic States
integrated quickly with the western structures and became peculiar
mediators to the relationship with the West. For Armenia, Poland also
performs this function.

In other words, whenever direct contact between Armenia and its
influential Western partners is impossible, it is replaced by contacts
with Poland or the Baltic states.

Hence, when the foreign ministers of Turkey and Russia meet in
Moscow to discuss economic and political issues of mutual importance,
the visit of the Armenian foreign minister to Lithuania and Latvia
deserves interest. By the way, this visit can be interesting also in
the context of Moscow~Rs not so warm attitude toward these countries.

Interestingly, these cross-visits immediately follow the vote of the
French Senate.

Apparently, it is clear to Armenia that Turkey will try to freeze
the process through Russia~Rs pipes. Meanwhile, Armenia is trying the
option of striking the iron while it is hot, while the effect of the
decision of France in the European area is still fresh.

The annual economic forum in Davos will discuss the social
responsibility of elites and systemic reforms in the world. In other
words, the agendas of Armenia and the world are totally in line.

Hence, it is strange that Armenia will not have a representative to
the forum where a record high number of participants will get together
today, and our neighbors Georgia and Azerbaijan will be represented
by their presidents.

At least, the Armenian Development Agency or the National
Competitiveness Foundation could participate if the high-ranking
government officials are so busy to attend Davos.

Certainly, participation does not mean that the state and society will
benefit, investments will flow to Armenia, or great agreements will
be reached. However, the problem is that Armenia even refuses to try.

On the other hand, it can be considered as an honest refusal. The
point is that Armenia has nothing to look for in Davos. What should
an economy dominated by the nicknames representatives of the criminal
oligarchy where technological development is confined to cash terminals
in supermarkets look for in Davos?

Meanwhile, the development of supermarkets will hardly worry those
in Davos. The world needs to discuss systemic issues of social
responsibility while the discussion in Armenia is limited to partisan
responsibility.

The nicknamed business elite has monopolized the economy and
established a solid economic and political system which will
suffocate any initiative that will go beyond the cash terminal of
the supermarket.

Now most people will say that it is an unfair definition because the
Armenian economy does not consist of supermarkets only. There are
many other spheres and types of business activities.

Of course, there are, and nobody can negate it even though negating
it is not penalized. However, the core of the economy of Armenia is
supermarkets because the economy of Armenia is based on the logic of
supermarkets. Everything is based on import and consumption, while
export is limited to mine production.

Of course, Davos is not concerned with this. At best, the economic
conference of the Republican Party may be concerned with it where
eloquent speeches are made but life shows that they are meant to
protect the current path of the economy from the evil eye.

The agreement about creative cooperation between Rossotrudnichestvo
and Armenian Writers’ Union is the first step which replenishes
the cooperation agreement in the humanitarian sphere signed between
Russia and Armenia in October 2011, the head of Rossotrudnichestvo
office in Armenia, Viktor Krivopuskov, said at the ceremony of the
agreement signing, 25 January.

The agreement envisages cooperation linked with holding of the Year
of Armenia in Russia and the Year of Russia in Armenia, as well as
enhancing of the Armenian-Russian translation school. Krivopuskov
said that a group of translators from Russia will visit Armenia in
spring of the current year, together with Armenian translators to
translate modern Armenian literature into Russian.

WASHINGTON WANTS TO SEE GOOD RELATIONS BETWEEN FRANCE AND TURKEY – STATE DEPARTMENT

Washington wants to see good relations between France and Turkey,
said spokesperson for State Department Victoria Nuland.

During the Tuesday briefing, she commented on bill criminalizing
genocide denial adopted by the French Senate.

“Well, you know that our views on these issues are very well known.

They are unchanged. We have shared with the Government of France our
views and how we have chosen to handle this issue,” she said.

Nuland stressed it is “a matter between Turkey and France” adding
that Washington wants to see good relations between them.

“They are both allies of the United States, and that’s our message
to both sides,” she added.

With a vote of 127 in favor and 86 against, France’s Senate passed
Monday the bill that criminalizes the denial of the genocides which
this country has formally recognized, including the Armenian Genocide.

This bill sets a one-year prison sentence plus a 45-thousand-Euro fine
for anyone who denies these genocides. According to the regulations,
the French President will ratify it within fifteen days of the Senate’s
decision. And Turkey had announced earlier that if the bill were to
pass, it will impose a number of sanctions against France.

L’Azerbaïdjan, allie de la Turquie, a vivement proteste mardi contre
la loi votee la veille par le Senat francais penalisant la negation
du genocide armenien sous l’Empire ottoman.

“La republique d’Azerbaïdjan deplore la loi adoptee par le Senat
francais qui penalise la negation du +genocide armenien+ et exprime
sa vive protestation”, a indique le ministère azerbaïdjanais des
Affaires etrangères dans un communique.

Cette mesure va a l’encontre des “principes de la democratie,
des droits de l’homme, de la liberte de parole et d’expression”,
a-t-il souligne.

En consequence, un responsable du parti au pouvoir en Azerbaïdjan a
suggere que la France quitte le Groupe de Minsk, cree pour trouver
une solution au conflit sur le territoire separatiste du Nagorny
Karabakh que se disputent l’Armenie et l’Azerbaïdjan.

“Les agissements de la France ont reduit a neant la confiance dont
elle beneficiait encore au sein de ce groupe”, a declare le secretaire
du parti au pouvoir, Ali Akhmedov, cite par l’agence Interfax.

“Dans une telle situation, la voie le plus honorable pour la France
serait de se retirer de cette mediation, dans la mesure où elle a
perdu le droit moral de remplir sa mission”, a-t-il ajoute.

Le Groupe de Minsk co-preside par la Russie, les Etats-Unis et la
France a ete cree en 1992 par la Conference sur la securite et la
cooperation en Europe (CSCE, l’actuelle OSCE), afin d’encourager la
recherche d’une resolution pacifique et negociee entre l’Armenie et
l’Azerbaïdjan du conflit les opposant sur le Nagorny Karabakh.

Le Parlement francais a definitivement adopte lundi soir, après un
ultime vote du Senat, une proposition de loi penalisant d’un an de
prison et d’une amende de 45.000 euros la negation du genocide armenien
de 1915 qui a fait 1,5 million de morts sous l’Empire ottoman, selon
les Armeniens.

La Turquie reconnaît que jusqu’a 500.000 Armeniens sont morts
pendant des combats et leur deportation, mais non par une volonte
d’extermination.

Le Premier ministre turc, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a deja qualifie la
loi adoptee en France d'”ouvertement discriminatoire” et “raciste”.

Proche allie de la Turquie, l’Azerbaïdjan est en conflit avec
l’Armenie a propos de la region separatiste azerbaïdjanaise du Nagorny
Karabakh. Bakou et Erevan n’arrivent pas a se mettre d’accord sur le
statut de cette region où les deux pays se sont livres a une guerre
qui a fait 30.000 morts entre 1988 et 1994.

C’etait la dernière ligne droite : le Senat a adopte le projet de
loi sur la penalisation de tout genocide dont le genocide armenien de
1915. Officiellement, la France reconnaît deux genocides : celui des
juifs pendant la Seconde guerre mondiale, et celui des armeniens mais
ne punissait jusqu’a present que la negation du premier. La proposition
de loi de la deputee UMP, Valerie Boyer, avait deja ete adoptee le 22
decembre a l’Assemblee nationale. Aujourd’hui, la loi prevoit de punir
d’un an de prison et 45.000 euros d’amende toute negation publique
d’un genocide reconnu par la loi francaise, dont le genocide armenien.

Le gouvernement turc a annonce des mesures de represailles contre la
France et accuse Nicolas Sarkozy d’avoir des visees electoralistes
avant le scrutin presidentiel. De son côte, le ministère des Affaires
etrangères a appele ” a l’apaisement ” et considère la Turquie comme
” un allie très important de la France “.

Nous saluons l’adoption de la proposition de la loi armenienne

L’Association des jeunesses armeniennes de Moscou salue l’adoption
du projet de loi par le Senat francais criminalisant la negation du
genocide armenien

” La France a demontre son attachement aux valeurs democratiques et
de moralite. Elle a a prouve qu’elle est un Etat impartial qui ne
saurait etre victime de chantage. Les auteurs du document montrent
la voie a d’autres pays, comment lutter contre le revisionnisme.

C’est un exemple parfait de ce que represente l’humanite et la justice,
valeurs fondamentales dans le monde.

La loi punissant la negation du genocide des Armeniens en 1915 sera
promulguee dans les 15 jours, a-t-on appris mardi auprès de l’Elysee
au lendemain d’un vote du Senat valant adoption definitive par le
Parlement.

“Le president de la Republique va promulguer la loi punissant la
negation des genocides dans un delai normal” après son adoption mardi
par le Parlement, c’est-a-dire “15 jours”, a affirme la presidence.

Le Premier ministre turc Recep Tayyip Erdogan a qualifie cette loi de
“raciste” et a promis d’imposer a la France des represailles “etape
par etape”.

Toutefois, l’Elysee met en exergue le fait que les interets superieurs
des deux pays devraient l’emporter. “La où nous avons des convergences,
ces convergences demeureront, la où nous avons des divergences,
elles demeureront aussi”, affirme-t-on.

“Il y aura des reactions vocales bruyantes de la part des Turcs mais
les Turcs ont besoin des investisseurs francais”, ajoute-t-on.

La meme source observe que malgre les deux precedents boycottages
d’Ankara envers Paris – en 2001 lors de l’adoption de la loi
reconnaissant le genocide armenien et en 2006, lors du premier depôt
de la proposition de loi punissant la negation de ce genocide –
les relations economiques entre les deux pays n’en avaient pas ete
affectees.

“Depuis 2006, on est passe de 250 entreprises francaises a 400
installees en Turquie, le nombre d’employes turcs passant de 40.000
a 100.000” dans ces entreprises, fait-on valoir.

Avec le boycottage, “les bateaux francais ne pourront plus accoster
dans le port d’Izmir”, souligne Paris, qui refuse d’y voir “un drame
national”.

Alors que le president Abdullah Gul et le Premier ministre Recep
Erdogan avaient demande a parler au telephone avec Nicolas Sarkozy,
celui-ci avait decline l’offre, craignant qu'”au lieu de calmer le
jeu”, cela n’empire. A la place, il avait ecrit le 18 janvier une
lettre a M. Erdogan, lui demandant de “faire prevaloir la raison” et
“le dialogue”, “comme il sied entre deux pays allies et amis”.

“Le souhait du president Sarkozy serait de voir la Turquie reconnaître
les pages sombres de son Histoire comme nous avons reconnu les nôtres”,
ajoute-t-on, en allusion a la reconnaissance par l’ex-president
Jacques Chirac, en 1995, de la “responsabilite de l’Etat francais”
dans la deportation de juifs de France, ou la decision de M. Sarkozy
de faire du 10 mai un jour de commemoration de l’esclavage des Noirs.

“Pourquoi la Turquie refuse-t-elle avec vehemence d’assumer ses
responsabilites ? Ca fait cinq ans que le president pousse les Turcs
a evoluer sur le sujet”, affirme-t-on, en ajoutant : “c’est une loi
necessaire pour proteger nos valeurs, dans un esprit qui n’est pas
partisan” puisque le nom de la Turquie n’est pas mentionnee dans le
texte de loi.

Deux genocides, celui des juifs pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale
et celui des Armeniens, sont reconnus par la France, mais seule
la negation du premier etait pour l’instant punie. Pour l’Elysee,
“cela n’etait pas acceptable pour les Armeniens qui consideraient
qu’il y avait deux poids, deux mesures”.

COLLAPSE OF TURKEY’S GENOCIDE DENIAL TOPIC AT ANCA-WR TOWN HALL

GLENDALE, CA – French Senate passage of an anti-genocide denial
measure and U.S. House adoption of a resolution urging Turkey to
return Christian churches will be the topics discussed at a special
Town Hall meeting this Sunday January 29th at 1:00 PM, hosted by the
Armenian National Committee of America Western Region (ANCA-WR) at St.
Mary’s Church Hall, in Glendale CA.

The event will spotlight two recent victories in the international
campaign to secure justice for the Armenian Genocide, including recent
Congressional adoption of a measure calling on Turkey to return stolen
church properties to their rightful owners, and this week’s French
Senate vote to criminalize genocide denial.

Speaking at the event will be Harut Sassounian, publisher of the
California Courier newspaper and dedicated advocate of the Armenian
Cause. Joining him will be William Bairamian, executive director of
the ANCA-WR. Other guest speakers will also address the audience.

Admission is free but because of the limited capacity of the hall,
attendees are encouraged to arrive early since entry to the event will
be on a first-come, first-served basis.
