Armenian bottled water recalled

Some spring water imported from Armenia and sold under the name
"Jermuk" contains as much as 60 times the legal limit of arsenic and
shouldn’t be consumed, the Food and Drug Administration said.

No illnesses have been reported, but the FDA found arsenic levels of
500 to 600 micrograms per liter, compared with a legal limit of 10
micrograms per liter in bottled water, the agency said in a
statement. Arsenic is known to cause cancer in humans. Symptoms of
acute arsenic exposure include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The
kidneys, liver, skin and cardiovascular and nervous systems could be
affected over a period of a few days to weeks.

The recall comes after the FDA sampled 500-milliliter green glass
bottles of water and detected arsenic. The products were distributed
nationwide and include the following:

Zetlian Bakery Inc. of Pico Rivera, Calif., is recalling the product
with labels that read: "Jermuk Original Sparkling Natural Mineral
Water Fortified With Natural Gas From the Spring." The product is
also labeled as "2006 Jermuk Mayr Gortsaran CJSC" and "Imported by:
Zetlian Bakery Inc."

Importers Direct Wholesale Co. of Los Angeles is recalling the
product with labels that read: "Jermuk Sodium Calcium Bicarbonate and
Sulphate Mineral Water." The product is also labeled as "Bottled by
ARPI Plant, Republic of Armenia" and "Exclusive US importer and
distributor: Importers Direct Wholesale Co., Los Angeles, CA."

Kradjian Importing Co. of Glendale, Calif., is recalling the product
with labels that read: "Jermuk, Natural Mineral Water Sparkling."

The product is also labeled as "Bottled by Jermuk Group CJSC" and
"Sale Agent Kradjian Importing Co. Inc."

The FDA is investigating whether other sizes or packaging are
involved.

In an appeal to the 46 member states on the eve of International
Women’s Day, Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly President René
van der Linden and Human Rights Commissioner Thomas Hammarberg stress
that domestic violence is one of the most widespread violations of
human dignity.

According to a study carried out for the Council of Europe, between
a quarter and a fifth of all women in Europe have been subjected
to physical violence at least once in their adult lives. More than
one out of ten women have suffered sexual violence with the use of
force. Most acts of violence are committed by men in their immediate
environment, generally partners or former partners.

This violence knows no geographical boundaries and no age limit; it
is not confined to any particular culture, group or social class. It
is a political and a public problem, which must be addressed in every
Council of Europe member state, they say.

Finally, they invite the member states to step up their efforts to
implement the programme of the Council of Europe Campaign to Combat
Violence against Women, including Domestic Violence (2006-2008),
alert public opinion and pass laws to stop domestic violence against
women. In particular, every appropriate legislative, judicial,
budgetary and educational measure should be taken, and national plans
adopted to put a stop to domestic violence against women.

This should include the criminalisation and prosecution of rape carried
out within marriage, in the same way as other rape, and the removal
of a violent spouse from the couple’s home, where such measures do
not already exist.

«Blocher hat sich zu weit rausgelehnt»

Laut dem Historiker Hans-Lukas Kieser wäre eine internationale
Historikerkommission zur Klärung von Fragen rund um den türkischen
Genozid an den Armeniern sehr nützlich. Doch zugleich müsse ein
politischer Prozess stattfinden.

Eine Historikerkommission müsse nicht primär die Frage klären, ob
ein Genozid stattgefunden habe, sagte der Türkei-Spezialist am
Dienstag im Gespräch mit der Nachrichtenagentur SDA. «Diese Frage
ist unter Experten längst entschieden.» Doch eine Kommission
könnte nützlich sein – ähnlich wie die Bergier-Kommission in der
Schweiz in den 90er Jahren.
Hier habe die Politik jedoch zuvor eingestanden, dass gegenüber den
jüdischen Flüchtlingen Fehler gemacht wurden, und sich entschuldigt.
Auch in der Türkei brauche es einen politischen Prozess.

In diesem Sinn habe sich Bundesrat Christoph Blocher mit seinen
Aussagen, die Bewertung der Frage sei nicht Sache der Regierung und das
Antirassismusgesetz sei zu revidieren, «zu weit rausgelehnt», sagte
der in Zürich lehrende Historiker weiter. «Es bleibt zu hoffen, dass
der Rest des Bundesrates das zurecht biegt.»

Klärung der Verantwortung
Doch um differenziertes Geschichtsbewusstsein zu fördern und
Detailfragen zu klären, wäre eine Kommission sehr nützlich,
unterstrich Kieser. Zum Beispiel die Frage, wer die direkte
Verantwortung für den Genozid an den Armeniern trage: der ganze Staat
oder ein Staat im Staat – Kräfte, die eigenwillig im Namen des Staates
handelten.
Kieser hält den Moment für gekommen, in dem die Türkei einen
Paradigmawechsel anpacken sollte. Bisher habe eine klare, zwingende
Gelegenheit gefehlt. Ein Versuch nach dem 1. Weltkrieg sei mit dem
Befreiungskrieg und dem Aufbau des Nationalstaats wieder abgebrochen
worden. Diese unglückliche Konstellation sei bis heute festgefroren
geblieben.

Doch heute sei die Chance grösser denn je. Mit dem Ende des Kalten
Kriegs, dem EU-Annäherungsprozess und der Ermordung des
armenisch-türkischen Journalisten Hrant Dink sei in der Türkei und
international der Druck und das Bedürfnis zur Klärung gewachsen.
Einem Teil der Politiker sei klar, dass ein Paradigmawechsel nötig
sei. «Sonst dreht sich alles im Kreis.»

WASHINGTON POST ARTICLE UNDERSCORES CONTRADICTIONS IN US VOTE ON ARMENIAN CLAIMS

A recent article in the Washington Post newspaper has called on Turkey
not to take seriously the US Congressional vote on the non-binding
resolution on the so-called Armenian genocide bill.

Post writer Jackson Diehl asserts that Turkey’s behavior regarding the
controversial bill should be "like one of the Western democracies,"
and that Turkey should simply "shrug its shoulders" and move on with
regards to the bill. Diehl also notes in his article that no one much
will place importance on the non-binding Armenian bill, pointing to
another non-binding resolution passed by the House of Representatives
against the Iraq war as an example.

Dielh also uses his article to point to the estimated 70-80 ethnic
Armenian voters who live in US Congressman Adam Schiff’s district,
a fact he asserts helped shaped Schiff’s heavy involvement in the
writing of the bill. Diehl also recalls that many other ethnically
Armenian voters live in Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s district; Pelosi has
reiterated her support for the bill many times.

At one point in his article, Diehl touches on what he portrays as the
lack of knowledge on the part of most House of Representatives members
to even decide on such a long past subject as the alleged Armenian
genocide. Says Diehl, "Just think, 435 House of Representative members,
most of whom don’t even know the difference between a Sunni and a
Shiite, will decide on whether or not to approve of Adam Schiff’s
version of events which occured 92 years ago in the northeast region
of Turkey."

Perincek leugnet Völkermord weiter

Der türkische Politiker Dogu Perincek muss sich ab morgen vor dem
Lausanner Polizeigericht wegen Verstosses gegen die Rassismusstrafnorm
verantworten. Von einem Völkermord an Armenier will er nach wie vor
nichts wissen.

In einem Interview der Zeitung «Le Matin» kündigte Perincek an,
russische Unterlagen vorzulegen, wonach der Völkermord an den
Armeniern nie stattgefunden habe.
Der Vorwurf des Verstosses gegen die Rassismusstrafnorm gegen den
Vorsitzenden der türkischen Arbeiterpartei belastete die Beziehungen
zwischen der Schweiz und der Türkei bereits seit geraumer Zeit. So
wurde alt Bundesrat Joseph Deiss, der 2005 eine Reise in die Türkei
geplant hatte, unter Angabe von Termingründen ausgeladen. Auch in der
Schweiz ist die Rassismusstrafnorm umstritten; Bundesrat Christoph
Blocher schlug bei seinem Türkei-Besuch deren Abschaffung vor.

«90 Kilogramm Dokumente»
Auch Perincek sprach sich bei seiner Ankunft in Zürich für eine
Abschaffung aus und wiederholte seine Aussagen. «Ich hoffe, dass die
Hexenjagd auf mich bald aufhört», sagte er in dem heute
veröffentlichten Interview der Westschweizer Zeitung «Le Matin».

Seine Meinung abzugeben, stelle in der Schweiz eine strafbare Handlung
dar. «Ich habe mehr als 90 Kilogramm Dokumente aus einem russischen
Archiv dabei, die beweisen, dass der Genozid an den Armeniern nie
stattgefunden hat», erklärte er.
Massaker bestritten
Perincek hatte im Sommer 2005 in Reden in den Kantonen Waadt, Zürich
und Bern zur Armenierfrage gesprochen. Gleich wie auch die türkische
Regierung bestritt Perincek die Massaker von 1915. Nach diesen
Auftritten wurden auch gegen ihn Strafverfahren wegen Verstosses gegen
die Rassismusstrafnorm eröffnet.
In der Schweiz hatten der Nationalrat und der waadtländische Grossrat
die Existenz des Genozids gleich wie auch andere Länder anerkannt.
Laut Perincek stellt die Anerkennung «das Ergebnis eines zutiefst
verankerten antitürkischen Vorurteils, dass nicht der Wahrheit
entspricht» dar.

Für den Prozess sind zwei Verhandlungstage anberaumt. Perincek kann
dabei auf grosse Unterstützung seiner Landsleute zählen. Es wird
eine grosse Kundgebung erwartet. Laut Perincek soll es zu keinen
Ausschreitungen kommen. «Wir haben nicht die Absicht zu

Blocher sorgt für Unmut
Bundesrat Christoph Blocher hat am Wochenende den türkischen
Justizminister empfangen. Der Zeitpunkt macht stutzig: Diese Woche muss
Dogu Perincek in der Schweiz vor Gericht.

Der türkische Nationalist Dogu Perincek gibt sich siegesgewiss. Er ist
überzeugt, den Prozess zu gewinnen, der gegen ihn angestrengt wurde.
Da Perincek den Völkermord an den Armeniern mehrfach geleugnet hat,
muss er sich diese Woche in Lausanne wegen Verletzung der
Antirassismus-Strafnorm verantworten. «Ich bin in die Schweiz
gekommen, um den Hexenprozess zu beenden», sagte er gestern bei seiner
Ankunft in Zürich.

Perincek geht davon aus, in Bundesrat Christoph Blocher einen
Verbündeten zu haben. «Dank unserem Kampf hat der Schweizer
Justizminister angekündigt, das Gesetz zu ändern», heisst es
triumphierend auf der Website, die er zusammen mit seinen Anhängern
eigens für den Lausanner Prozess eingerichtet hat. Umso
überraschender ist, dass Blocher am Freitag und Samstag in Bern den
türkischen Justizminister Cemil Cicek getroffen hat. Der Lausanner
Prozess sei offiziell nicht traktandiert und daher auch nur am Rand ein
Thema gewesen, versichert seine Pressestelle. Blocher habe seinen
Amtskollegen schon im Herbst, beim Besuch in der Türkei, in die
Schweiz eingeladen.
An Zufall mag jedoch niemand glauben. Statt die Richter in Ruhe ihre
Arbeit machen zu lassen, übten sowohl die Türkei als auch Bundesrat
Blocher Druck auf sie aus, kritisiert Ueli Leuenberger. «Das ist ein
Skandal», fügt der grüne Nationalrat hinzu, der zusammen mit
CVP-Nationalrat Dominique de Buman die parlamentarische Gruppe
Schweiz-Armenien leitet. Perincek wird von zahlreichen nationalistischen
Anhängern unterstützt. Die meisten landen heute auf dem Flughafen
Genf.

Unglaubliche Arroganz

Der türkische Nationalist Dogu Perincek weiss sich geschickt in Szene
zu setzen: 2005 reiste er in die Schweiz, um mit demonstrativen
Auftritten in Zürich, Winterthur und Lausanne einen Landsmann zu
unterstützen, der den Völkermord an den Armeniern leugnete. Dass er
sich damit selber ein Strafverfahren einhandeln würde, war ihm
bewusst: Darauf hatte er es sogar angelegt.
Diese Woche muss sich Perincek in Lausanne vor Gericht verantworten.
Schon heute ist klar, dass er den Prozess schamlos nutzen wird, um seine
von der Wissenschaft längst widerlegten Behauptungen zu propagieren.
Leider wird er es dabei nicht bewenden lassen: Zusammen mit Rauf
Denktasch, der früher die türkische Republik Nordzypern führte und
heute eine obskure nationalistische Bewegung präsidiert, lädt
Perincek seine Getreuen in Lausanne zu einer Konferenz ein, um seinen
Standpunkt zu wiederholen. Keine Provokation ist ihm zu billig.

TURKISH JOURNALIST DOES NOT WISH TO BEAR RESPONSIBILITY FOR TALEAT AND ENVER PASHAS ACT

able to face their past. This was the main subject of the congress on
the subject Confrontation with the Past organized by the Heinrich-Boll
Stiftung German Union at Bilgi University of Istanbul.

The congress held with participation of Turkish and foreign scientists
also touched upon assertions on Armenian Genocide and the policy of
denying it.

In particular, Chairman of Diarbekir’s Advocates’ Academy Sezgin
Tandkulo said that facing the past is mixed up with cleaning the
past with a sponge in Turkey. "While, the sponge of the past is dirty
and it should be put aside. But against all this, Turkey has started
facing its past."

Speaker Murad Belge noted that denying the past becomes a reason "for
an individual or public to be connected with the reality with wrong
ties." Denial of Armenian Genocide creates a morbid condition and Hrant
Dink’s murder, in his opinion, is the result of this morbid condition.

And journalist Altan Eoyme demanded that those responsible for the
crime of early 20th century be revealed. "I cannot bear responsibility
for Taleat or Enver Pashas acts all my life," he said.

2, `Impeachment’ Public-Political Initiative held a rally adjacent the
Matenadaran to find the answer to this question. First of all they
named all the candidates nominated for the `Impeachment’; Stepan
Demirchyan, Aram Sargsyan, Raffi Hovannisian, Artashes Geghamyan and
Arthur Baghdasaryan.

`During our previous meetings we called on the oppositional figures to
ally and expressed our readiness to serve them without getting engaged
in the proportional ticket. We wanted them to unite and to combat the
anticipated election frauds in one front’, announced Aramazd
Ghalamkaryan. `I must state that the traditional opposition didn’t
take the new generation’s advice. None of the above-mentioned
political figures took practical measures to make the alliance
probable.’

`The oppositional forces failed to display political will and to get
rid of their ambitions and personal interests’, Ashot Sargsyan said.

Aghasy Enoqyan noted in his speech that `all those who aren’t guided
by the idea of `Impeachment’ are in close connection with President
Kocharyan. It isn’t too late to join the `Impeachment’.

Vahagn Khachatryan suggested the rally participants asking the
candidates the following question, `Are you for or against the
`Impeachment’? This will be a kind of testing. If the candidate
rejects the idea of `Impeachment’ it means he pursues other objectives
while running for the elections.’

To note, the Alternative will hold its recurrent meeting on March 9,
at 5:00 p.m.

Motahhari’s "Dastan-e Rastan" translated into Armenian

TEHRAN, March 2 (MNA) — The second volume of "Dastan-e Rastan" (The
Stories of the Truthful) by Morteza Motahhari has been translated
into Armenian.

According to the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization (ICRO),
the book was translated by Jorjik Ebrahimi and came out by Iran’s
Cultural Office in Armenia.

The office undertook the translation and publication of the first
volume with the aim of introducing Motahhari’s works to the Armenian
readers for the first time in early 2006.

The second volume consists of 42 stories and had a print run of 750
copies.

Born in 1920, Ayatollah Morteza Motahhari was among the major Iranian
ideologists. His innovative theories played a major role in
clarifying the Islamic ideology for the young generation.

"Dastan-e Rastan" was introduced as the best book in 1965 by the
UNESCO.

Motahhari was martyred in 1979.

THE CATHOLICOSATE OF CILICIA PARTICIPATES IN THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
MEETING OF MECC

The meeting of the Middle East Council of Churches’ (MECC) Executive
Committee started today in Egypt. The committee is formed of 24 members who
represent all the churches in the Middle East. The Armenian Church is
represented in this committee by Archbishop Sebouh Sarkissian (Primate of
the Diocese of Tehran) and Bishop Kegham Khatcherian (Primate of the Diocese
of Lebanon).

The meeting will discuss issues related to the work of the Middle East
Council of Churches, its relations and its administrative and financial
aspects. This meeting is held twice a year.

The MECC Standing Committee on Administration and Finance convened
recently in Cyprus. As a member of this committee, Dr. Jean Salmanian
actively participated in the meeting.
