Bosnia’s Armenian "genocide" vote to show if true European values exist

Translated excerpt from report by Bosnian Serb news agency SRNA

Banja Luka, 8 April: Political analyst Predrag Lazarevic has said – in
light of the announcement that a declaration by which B-H
[Bosnia-Hercegovina] condemns the Turkish genocide against the
Armenians has been put into parliamentary procedure – that it was
encouraging to see Serb politicians going from a passive into an
active political role.

"This is the best indicator which will lay the truth bare, take the
masks off and declare whether or not we in B-H are for true European
values. The same is the case with the announcement that a ban on the
burqa has also been proposed," Lazarevic told the [Banja Luka-based
daily] Fokus.

According to him, should the Sarajevo politicians, above all Party for
B-H leader [and B-H Presidency chairman] Haris Silajdzic, oppose these
proposals then it would be clear that they do not want a European B-H,
but an Islamic one on the path of [wartime Bosnian Muslim leader and
post war B-H Presidency member] Alija Izetbegovic’s Islamic
Declaration.

Russian national wrestling team has expelled athletes with Armenian
surnames, who were before reported as participants at the European
Championship in Baku.

Team’s chief coach Gogi Koguashvili said: "We were planning to contest
Seyran Simonian and Migran Harutyunian, but later we had to change
our plans."

Koguashvili said that Simonian was injured and is preparing for
surgery, while the team’s management made a decision to expel
Harutyunian from the list of participants, for obvious reasons to
have no track with provocations.

"I believe that the Azerbaijani side will make efforts to provide
security for participants of Armenian origin; however, there can be
someone out of balance, whose actions can be unpredictable," said
Gogi Koguashvili.

BAKU: ‘Who Needs Armenia?’

‘WHO NEEDS ARMENIA?’

Alternative (Re:AL!) Civic Union, comments on an article by Armenia’s
ex-foreign minister.

When a person of such a high and honorable status as the first foreign
minister of Armenia speaks out after a long break about the future of
regional affairs and of his own country, one should listen carefully.

Unfortunately, I have just read another example of wishful ethnocentric
thinking: 73.shtml

Mr Hovannisian, you may continue in your belief that the myth about
the ‘genocide of Armenians’ will be recognized by the majority of
intelligent people of sober mind. Or that Azerbaijan will one day
again donate another piece of its historic land to Armenia after
the deportations of hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis from
tsarist and Soviet Armenia in the 19th century, during Stalinist
‘collectivization’, in 1948-1953, and 1987-1990.

The reality is that Armenia is dying. Not only because, as you said,
there is no rule of law, no true elections in your country, but mostly
because Armenia is increasingly poor and irrelevant.

Who needs Armenia? Your Russian metropolis? Its elite is currently
in deep debate about whether or not Russia should retain sovereignty
over the North Caucasus, not to mention its strong presence in the
South Caucasus. A bunch of US congressmen with a famously idiotic
view of the facts of history through their election funds? Or shop
and boutique owners in downtown Buenos Aires?

You can continue relying on all of these, although two decades of
such reliance by your formally independent state have yielded nothing:
as you perfectly know, in five to 10 years your country will be even
further behind Azerbaijan and Georgia and Turkey – your ultimate
friends and partners whom you look at as an envious neighbour. Stuck
in the 19th century way of thinking, your country demands territory
and ‘justice’ from all three of us under different pretexts and in
different formats.

The entire agenda that your nation’s leaders have built for ordinary
Armenians is just paranoid. You are experiencing severe depopulation,
you have no money, you have no economy, your borders are under Russian
control, your country became mono-ethnic, because sick ethnic pride
in your society cannot accommodate minorities, and yet you – one
would not expect it of a wise man – support the fantasies of your
homegrown and transatlantic nationalists.

Very disappointing. Very disappointing for me as someone who dreams of
a South Caucasus without borders – from the Black Sea to the Caspian,
a land of free trade, prosperity, cultural diversity and political
freedom.

ArmInfo. During a meeting with Serzh Sargsyan in Paris, Robert
Kocharyan demanded that Serzh Sargsyan should appoint him prime
minister and then resign, having made the presidential seat vacant
for him, Levon Ter- Petrosyan, the first president of Armenia, leader
of the oppositional Armenian National Congress (ANC), said at today’s
rally of his supporters.

According to Ter-Petrosyan, it turns out that the power is going to
be changed by means of not elections, but an ordinary state takeover.

Moreover, this program is supported by Dashnaktsutyun, Prosperous
Armenia, and Speaker of the National Assembly with his entourage,
said Ter-Petrosyan.

19 Serving And Retired Military Officers Face Rearrest In Turkey

19 SERVING AND RETIRED MILITARY OFFICERS FACE REARREST IN TURKEY

PanARMENIAN.Net
April 5, 2010 – 16:49 AMT 11:49 GMT

An Istanbul court ordered on Sunday the rearrest of 19 serving and
retired military officers charged over an alleged plot to overthrow
the government, CNN Turk reported.

Among the 19, who were freed from detention on Thursday pending
trial, were retired four-star general Cetin Dogan, the former head
of Turkey’s First Army, and lieutenant-general Engin Alan, a former
special forces commander.

The officers are linked to the alleged 2003 "Sledgehammer" plot, which
media reports say involved plans to bomb an historic mosque, shoot
down a fighter jet and blame Greece, and arrest hundreds of thousands
of people to destabilize and ultimately to overthrow the government.

The military has denied such a plot. It has said Sledgehammer was
part of a war-games scenario used at a training seminar.

CNN Turk did not specify the court’s reason for ordering their
rearrest, which followed an appeal by prosecutors against their
release.

The 19 facing rearrest are 11 serving officers and eight retired ones.

The armed forces have overthrown three governments in outright coups
since 1960 and pressured Turkey’s first Islamist-led administration
to resign in 1997.

Any fresh military attempt to intervene in politics is now regarded
as highly unlikely. The army retains considerable influence in Turkey
but its power has been eroded in recent years under political reforms
encouraged by the European Union, which Turkey is bidding to join.

Armenian Genocide Aftereffects to be discussed in Ankara

Azg Daily, Armenia

ARMENIAN GENOCIDE AFTEREFFECTS TO BE DISCUSSED IN ANKARA

By Hasmik Harutyunyan

Turkish press distorted the facts

Turkish Hurriyet’s April 1 issue’s article about the Armenian and
Turkish intellectuals’ meeting to discuss the fact of the Armenian
Genocide in Ankara on April 24 and 25 organized by the Ankara Freedom
of Thought Initiative does not correspond to reality. The newspaper
wrote that Armenian and Turkish intellectuals would attempt to improve
dialogue between the two nations and discuss the events of 1915.

The Armenian Weekly journalist Khachik Muradyan, who will also
participate in the event, told "Azg" daily in a phone conversation
that the conference is dedicated to the memory of Hrant Dink. It
embraces four parts: the historical part of the Armenian Genocide; the
official denialist policy from the days of "Union and Progress"
political party to the Cemal years; turkization of the economy and
expropriation of Armenians’ property.

"These four themes were proposed by the organizers of the conference.
Discussions of the Armenian Genocide fact are out of the question.
Scientists and representatives denying the Armenian Genocide will not
participate in the conference. The participants recognize the fact of
the Armenian Genocide; they have many times spoken openly about it. We
are going to discuss the aftereffects of the Genocide. My report is
dedicated to the issues of compensation of the Armenian Genocide
survivors’ heirs. If after arriving in Ankara it is cleared up that
the fact of the Armenian Genocide will be discussed, believe me, no
one will participate in the conference", Muradyan said.

Though the Turkish press reported that only Armenian and Turkish
intellectuals would participate in the event, according to Khachik
Muradyan, well-known foreign scientists, who are well informed about
the Armenian Genocide issue, will also participate in the conference.

The conference aims at creating a real atmosphere in Turkey on April 24.

Of course, the initiative is a praiseworthy action, but is April 24 an
appropriate time to discuss the aftereffects of the Armenian Genocide,
when the Armenian-Turkish relations are tense? Maybe it would be
better to hold the conference after April 24, taking into account
current developments.
