Tsuker-zis
Frank London / Lorin Sklamberg | Tzadik (2009)

Trumpeter Frank London and vocalist/accordionist Lorin Sklamberg have
always attempted to introduce a fresh perspective when redefining
traditional Jewish music. As founders of the Grammy award-winning
alt-klezmer band The Klezmatics, they adapt ancient and traditional
holiday songs of the Jewish diaspora into a modern, surprising sphere.

Tsuker-zis, (sugar-sweet), their third installment of Hasidic
religious songs and melodies, nigunim’after Nigunim (Tzadik, 1998) and
The Zmiros Project (Traditional Crossroads, 2001)’are all exemplary
for their vision. They dress the beautiful and touching melodies in an
all-compassing, genre-crossing, unique blend of aesthetics.

On Tsuker-zis, London and Sklamberg are joined by three colleagues
from New York’s Downtown music scene’Night Ark’s American-Armenian oud
master Ara Dinkjian, Psychedelic Furs’ guitarist/electronics wizard
Knox Chandler and North-Indian virtuoso percussionist Deep Singh. The
three are known for their abilities to transcend genre and
style. Here, they move freely between simple folk melodies and
abstract, atmospheric electronica. They aid in spicing the sugar-sweet
Jewish imagery that often serves as a metaphor for the divine
sweetness of life, with surprising new tastes.

The fourteen songs consist mostly of Hasidic holiday songs’Succos,
Pesach (Passover), Rosh Hashana (New Year), Yom Kippur (Day of
Atonement), Purim, Simkhes Toyre and the fast days’and are imbued with
reverential textures and a sense of communal joy and
gratitude. Sklamberg’s warm and beautiful tenor voice, combined with
London’s restrained and airy trumpet sound, introduce the original
essence of these songs and melodies, while keeping their deep
emotional expressiveness intact. At the same time, innovative
arrangements manage to broaden and update messages that not only
signify the nomadic diaspora, but also suggest a new and hopeful
vision of a peaceful world where ancient cultures’Jewish, Christian,
Islamic and Indian’can co-exist, blend and flourish together.

London and Sklamberg have been working for over twenty years and know
that more often the strength of these songs lies in careful and simple
execution rather than in challenging and turbulent arrangements. Such
is the case in "Our Parent, Our Sovereign," a prayer that is recited
during Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Sklamberg’s straight-forward
delivery retains its emotional power, but the arrangement, and mainly
the distant distorted guitar, adds a doubting dimension to the
religious text. On "The Lord Sent His Servant," Sklamberg and Dinkjian
present the Ashkenazi song as a duet, but relocate it from its
East-European origin to an imaginary Middle-Eastern territory.

This beautiful project is the most successful in London and
Sklamberg’s nigunim series; a delight in the sweeping authenticity of
its songs and the imaginative creativity of its arrangements.

HEAD OF COMMUNITY OF YEZIDS IN ARMENIA: BILATERAL RELATIONS WITH TURKEY MUST NOT BE ESTABLISHED AS LONG AS TURKEY DENIES ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

ArmInfo. Bilateral relations with Turkey must not be established as
long as Turkey denies Armenian Genocide and the issue of Kars and
Ardahan and other originally Armenian lands, Head of the Community
of Yezids of Armenia Aziz Tamoyan told media on Thursday.

He said that yet last year he opposed the visit of Turkish President
Gul to Armenia. "Turks have not changed their stand on Armenia. After
visiting our country Gul immediately left for Azerbaijan to "calm
down" Aliyev and once more assure him of Turkey’s friendship and
fraternity. Such is the policy of Turkish leadership," Tamoyan said. He
said that despite being devoted to peace and good-neighbored relations,
he couldn’t reconcile with Turks who annihilated and expelled 1.5
million of Armenians and nearly 500,000 of Yezids from their native
lands. "I cannot understand what does establishment of relations
without preconditions mean! If Turkey has not recognized Genocide of
Armenia, if the Kars Treaty that deprived Armenians of their lands
is still in force, normalization of the Armenian-Turkish relations
are inexpedient and out of question!" declared Tamoyan.

NERSES YERITSYAN: ARMENIAN-SPANISH COLLABORATION IS NOT USED TO ITS FULL POTENTIAL

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Armenian-Spanish collaboration is not used
to its full potential, RA Economy Minister Nerses Yeritsyan
believes. According to him, product turnover between the two
countries comprised about USD 8 million in 2009. "This is a low index,
compared with other EU states, still there’s a potential for economic
collaboration development," he noted.

According to the Minister, Spain has a rather diversified and
dynamically developing economy and Valencia’s entrepreneurs are
interested in the search of new markets. Yeritsyan noted that
Spanish entrepreneurs’ visit to Armenia is of introductory character,
still it’s possible further discussions will result in conclusion
of agreements.

The government is interested in offering assistance to entrepreneurs in
their attempt to enter new markets, and find new opportunities. "The
business forum will become a great opportunity to present
collaboration and business development perspectives in Armenia to
Spanish entrepreneurs."

As the Minister reported, Armenia is importing ceramics and sea
products from Spain and exporting raw material. There are a few
Armenian-Spanish enterprises in Armenia , some of them based on
Spanish capital stock.

Yerevan is hosting Armenian-Spanish business forum, with Armenian and
Spanish representatives of industry, telecommunications, information
technologies, tourism, construction and energetics among forum
participants.

During their visit, Spanish entrepreneurs met RA Economy Minister
Nerses Yeritsyan, Transportation Minister Gurgen Sargsyan and Municipal
Engineering Minister Vardan Vardanyan to discuss programs implemented
in government-private sector collaboration framework, as well as
investment opportunities.

BAKU: Does Armenia Find It Boring And Unprofitable To Live In Peace

DOES ARMENIA FIND IT BORING AND UNPROFITABLE TO LIVE IN PEACE WITH GEORGIA?

Elmira Tariverdiyeva

Trend News Agency

Lately there has been an impression that Yerevan finds living in peace,
with the relative majority of its neighbors, boring. But taking a look
at the future, it is unprofitable for Armenia to maintain friendly
relations with some countries, namely Georgia.

No sooner had the world community managed to discuss Turkey’s intention
to improve relations with Armenia, when a new topic for discussion
rose up, on the Georgian region of Javakheti, bordering Armenia and
compactly populated with Armenians.

In early September, during a meeting with representatives of the
Central Office of the Armenian Foreign Ministry and the Armenian
Diplomatic Corps, the Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said that
Armenia’s leadership must make every possible effort to support the
Armenians living in Georgia, ARMENIA Today said.

Sargsyan said that Yerevan wants the Georgian leadership to give
Armenian the status of regional language in the Georgian region of
Javakheti.. Moreover, Armenia is willing to provide a diocese of the
Armenian Church operating in Georgia with formal registration and the
proper protection of Armenian monuments in Georgia, which amount to
over 600, according to their sources.

Such proposals from their neighbors have caused a negative reaction
in Georgia, a country which has not fully recovered after consequences
of the August war and the occupation of its two regions.

Georgian State Minister for Reintegration, Timur Yakobashvili,
commented on Sargsyan’s statement. "Let Armenia deal with the spread
of the Armenian language in its own country," he said.

Georgia’s sharp denial of Sargsyan’s initiatives is well-founded. For
many years Armenia has emphatically raised the issue concerning the
difficult situation of the Armenian population in Javakheti.

Nothing happens just like that, and political leaders are
unlikely to declare such serious willing without expecting for the
effect. Intensification of Armenia’s claims towards Georgian leadership
is Yerevan’s first step in requesting autonomy form Georgia, and in
the future … who knows.

Moreover, Sargsyan’s words may confuse many Georgian citizens. Even if
Tbilisi were to give up and fulfill all Armenian requirements, the same
requirements could be made to Georgia concerning territories compactly
populated by other ethnic minorities (such as Azerbaijanis). Their
number is no less than the Armenians.

Why does Armenia spite Georgia so intentionally, after she has had
such a hard time? One can answer this question by thinking about the
possible scenario of future events. The Nagorno-Karabakh settlement
is progressing, and it is possible to solve, sooner or later. Then
Armenia, deprived of the economic benefits from this geographical
location it had for such a long period, would find a completely
logical and stable alternative in Georgia having internal problems.

Possible opening of Armenian-Turkish border has made observers think
Georgia is losing its importance as a transit country for the United
States and Europe.

According to U.S agency Bloomberg, Armenia may replace Georgia
as a transit country because of Georgia’s increasing political
instability. The Turkish Daily Star, which News.am agency cites,
reported with reference to sources that Turkey too may support Armenian
joining the Nabucco project amid improved relations between the two
countries. This would be beneficial to the EU, which would prefer
Armenia as a transit country over Georgia.

The safety of these projects is still the most important thing for all
investors of transit projects through Caucasian countries, whether the
railway route from Azerbaijan to Kars, or the pipeline, ensuring to
divert Azerbaijani fuel to Europe. Armenia will meet all requirements
of western investors as a transit country, once the borders with
Turkey are opened and the agreement with Azerbaijan is reached.

The Armenian President’s statements must not be underestimated. Tbilisi
will make a big mistake if, as before, it does not give due importance
to current events. "As it is known, the conflicts have traditionally
begun with rather local arguments. First, they begin with sharp
protest from leaders, indignant about the marginalized situation
of compatriots in a neighboring country, then a war of words in the
media and incidents at the border," the independent Georgian expert,
Zaal Anjaparidze, said in an article published by ARMENIA Today.

Perhaps, it is now necessary for Georgia to recall those sad
experiences of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Armenian Genocide should not be forgotten, but we live in the 21
century, Vladimir Zakharov , deputy director of the Center for
Caucasian Studies at the Moscow State Institute of International
Relations told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter. According to him, Armenia
is isolated from all sides.

"Armenia needs to live, have relations with the outside world. Despite
explicit statements that opening of borders between the countries is
treachery, I do not see it," the Russia expert said.

"Through Turkey, Armenia can solve vital issues for itself and for
Karabakh," Vladimir Zakharov said.

Cyprus always supports Armenians

18:10 / 09/05/2009Cyprus always supported Armenians and backed in
their struggle for the recognition of Armenian Genocide, stated Marios
Garoyian, the President of Cyprus House of Representatives, at the
conference dedicated to Armenian Genocide issues in Beirut.

At the `Armenian Genocide and International Law’ conference Garoyian
said: `Regardless whether committed at wartime or in peace, Genocide
is a crime to be punished in accord with international law. Despite,
the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of
Genocide provides effective international sentence, appeal to the
Convention is the first step that should be taken.’

Garoyian added that Turkey tried arduously to refute the fact of
Genocide committed by Ottoman Turkey.
