Russia sets up tech. HQ to find plane’s black boxes in Black Sea

MOSCOW, May 8 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s transportation minister has
ordered that emergency headquarters be set up to organize technical
assistance in an international effort to retrieve the flight
recorders of an Armenian plane that crashed off Russia’s Black Sea
coast last week, the transportation ministry said Monday.

The ministry said that Igor Levitin had appointed Alexander
Davydenko, head of the Federal Sea and River Transportation Agency
(Rosmorrechflot) to oversee the headquarters, which will include
Russian rescuers, experts from the Interstate Aviation Committee, and
French specialists.

The Airbus A-320 airliner crashed into the sea on Wednesday, killing
all 113 people on board.

Three Russian ships are now working at site of the crash – the Zaliv,
the Kapitan Beklemishev, and the Cheliken. The Zaliv hosts a new
Kalmar deep-sea search vehicle designed to locate parts of the
wreckage and flight recorders, which are seen as the key to
explaining the cause of the tragedy.

French specialists with equipment needed to search for the flight
recorders are expected to arrive in Sochi on Tuesday.

ANKARA: Canadian blunder on Armenian claims

Canadian blunder on Armenian claims
Recep Guvelioglu

[email protected] May 2006

Prime Minister of Canada Stephen Harper lat last month delivered a
speech supporting the Armenian claims of genocide. The Turkish
Foreign Ministry denounced his remarks, saying, “Turkey rejects
attempts to create a history based on biased political maneuvers and
propaganda.”
The Canadian Parliament approved a decision on the same claims two
years ago.
Personally I’m not happy with the Turkish attitude toward the
Armenians’ so-called genocide claims. I’m one of the critics of our
political approach on what happened in 1915.
Also, everybody knows that I’m also totally against the Armenian
falsifications.
As a person who’s spent quite a lot of time on the issue, all I want
is to eliminate deceptions and deliberate deviations from the
historical facts.
The declaration of the Foreign Ministry was clear and as usual a very
polite one. I’m not supposed to be like that.
Harper’s declaration on the so-called genocide commemoration day
(April 24) was aimed at satisfying the Armenian diaspora in Canada.
Like some other leaders in Western countries, he degraded the case to
make it domestic political fodder to get Armenian votes and support.
Excuse my language, but it was a kind of bone to toss.
This behavior bothers me.
The Armenian claims, whether true or false, are about human lives.
That kind of issue must be taken seriously. And as a democratic
leader, Harper should have tried to learn the other side of the coin.
Frankly, I don’t think that he even took a deep look at the Armenian
claims either.
Then comes another point: Since he must be much wiser than me, why
did he do so?
Because one of the sides of the conflict is Turkey and the Turks.
It’s clear that he has no respect for us.
Have you ever heard of Harper criticizing the British government for
what they did in India in the 1940s (for example in Amritsar)? Have
you ever heard that he said something about Sakyet Youssuf (a place
in Algeria where French troops massacred many civilian Algerians)?
No . Because these kinds of remarks might have created a lot of
trouble for Canada or Canadian economic life.
If I were a pro-genocide Armenian, I would have rejected Canadian
support in this way. If it’s a humanistic matter — genocide is a
totally anti-humanistic crime — it shouldn’t be used as bait for
domestic votes.
It’s a shame, not just only for Harper, but also for us.
That reminds me of an article by Bedii Faik. Many years ago drunk
American soldiers tore up the Turkish flag in Izmir. Faik wrote an
unforgettable sentence about that: “American soldiers tore up our
flag, because we put our flags much lower.”

Pictures: Probe begins into Sabena Technics hangar fire

By Kerry Ezard in London

Sabena Technics believes the fire that burned down one of its
maintenance hangars at Brussels airport, destroying four aircraft,
will have only a minor effect on its operations as investigations
begin into the cause of the blaze.

The hangar was completely destroyed in the fire, which buckled the
roof and structure (pictured below).

The company says the it is “rescheduling its maintenance tasks to
ensure continuity” and is relocating heavy maintenance activities to
its other hangars.

The spokeswoman confirms that the fire, which broke out at 00:00 last
night, destroyed three Airbus A320s. One A320 was operated by Armenian
carrier Armavia, another by compatriots Armenian International Airways
and a third by Greek charter operator Hellas Jet. A Belgian armed
forces Lockheed Martin C-130H Hercules was also lost.

The company is not disclosing the registration numbers of the aircraft
involved, but a spokesman for Hellas Jet confirms that one of its
A320s, a three-year old jet registered SX-BVB and leased from CIT
Group, is among the aircraft destroyed in the blaze.

Armenian International Airways has a single A320, a 13-year old
example registered EK-32001, which has recently been operated on
behalf of Tunisian carrier Tuninter and Air Arabia.

The Armavia A320 involved is reported to be a ten-year old model,
bearing registration EK-32010. The fire comes just days after the
carrier lost an A320 in the Black Sea, killing 113 on board, as the
jet attempted to land at Sochi Airport in Russia.

Belgian armed forces air command operates eleven Hercules,
registrations running sequencially from CH-10 to CH-12. It is not
yet known which C-130 was destroyed.

Sabena Technics says there is no indication as to what caused the
fire, adding that an investigation is continuing and that a clearer
picture should emerge “in a matter of days”.

suspension of relations with us is a complete nonsense. It needs to
be mentioned also that Azerbaijan had already raised the question in
the past, but the Islamic Republic of Iran protested against this.

Russia Air Crash Relatives Identify Bodies

RUSSIA AIR CRASH RELATIVES IDENTIFY BODIES
By Mikhail Antonov

Reuters, UK
May 4 2006

SOCHI, Russia (Reuters) – Relatives began the grim task on Thursday of
identifying bodies of some of the 113 passengers and crew killed when
their Armenian airliner crashed into the Black Sea off Russia’s coast.

In Sochi, the Russian holiday resort near where the Airbus A-320
crashed, a crowd of about 60 people gathered outside the morgue to
examine photographs of corpses hanging on a wall.

Most showed battered faces but some corpses were too disfigured. One
photograph showed only a man’s hand with a ring on one finger. Anyone
who recognised a relative was ushered inside the morgue to view
the body.

“People are, of course, in shock. It is an enormous stress for them,”
said Yuri Meditsa, a psychologist who was assigned to counsel grieving
relatives at the morgue.

“There are bodies that can be identified and there are some that,
realistically, cannot,” he said.

There were at least five children on the plane which took off from
the Armenian capital Yerevan early on Wednesday bound for Sochi’s
airport. Most of the passengers were Armenian. There were 26 Russian
passport holders on board.

A day and a half after the jet vanished from radar screens, divers
and rescue workers in boats had pulled 49 bodies from the water,
officials said. Twenty of the dead had been identified.

The first bodies will be flown home to Armenia later on Thursday for
burial, Armenian government minister Hovik Abrahamiyan said in Yerevan.

search was going on for more bodies and for the aircraft’s “black box”
flight recorder which should help investigators piece together the
jet’s last moments.

Crash investigators had picked up a radio tracking signal from one of
the black boxes lying on the seabed, said Viktor Beltsov, a spokesman
for Russia’s Emergencies Ministry.

Investigators and officials from Armavia, the airline operating the
plane, said they believed torrential rain and poor visibility were
factors in the crash. Russian prosecutors have ruled out terrorism.

Armavia’s managers said the aircraft had initially turned back to
Yerevan because weather conditions in Sochi made it impossible to land.

The crew changed course again and tried to land at Sochi a second time
when flight controllers told them the weather had cleared slightly,
the airline said.

FINAL MINUTES

There was a haunting glimpse into the flight’s final minutes on
Thursday when the Rossiya television station broadcast what it said
was a taped radio exchange between the crew and air traffic controllers
in neighbouring Georgia.

“We are returning to Yerevan,” a crew member can be heard saying over
a crackly radio link.

“Right now or later?” the controller asks.

“Now,” the crew member replied.

A special submersible was despatched to Sochi to help retrieve some
of the debris which, rescuers say, has sunk to the seabed about 500
metres (1,600 feet) down.

Russian television showed a rescuer picking up a single, white training
shoe from the water and adding it to a pile of clothes and shredded
suitcases on the deck of his dinghy.

BAKU: Azeri MP Criticizes Mediating OSCE Group

AZERI MP CRITICIZES MEDIATING OSCE GROUP

Assa-Irada, Azerbaijan
May 3 2006

Baku, May 2, AssA-Irada
An Azeri parliament member has questioned the credibility of the OSCE
Minsk Group (MG) brokering settlement to the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper
(Nagorno) Garabagh conflict.

Shahlar Asgarov said there are ample grounds for this conclusion.

“Who can say that the MG co-chairs have put forth any goodwill
proposals so far?” he queried.

The MP said he had been closely following the activity of the group
and arrived at a conclusion that it was established not to facilitate,
but on the contrary, to impede the peace process.

“The co-chairing countries [Russia, France and the United States]
assist either party when its position weakens, which prolongs the
[Armenian] occupation. Our society should understand this clearly,”
Asgarov said.

Specialists Don’t Exclude A-320 Record Boxes Won’t Be Found

SPECIALISTS DON’T EXCLUDE A-320 RECORD BOXES WON’T BE FOUND

PanARMENIAN.Net
03.05.2006 19:56 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Official representative of the Russian Ministry for
Emergency Situations Victor Beltsov said the bad weather conditions
are considered to be the principal cause of the crash. It was due
to heavy meteorological conditions that the crew requested for
crash landing twice. Bodies of 38 passengers of the Yerevan-Sochi
flight have been already found. The rescue works are being impeded
by heavy meteorological conditions. The speed of the wind at the
site reaches 10-11 meters per second and tends to increase. 23 boats
and a deep-diving vehicle “Gnom” that allows to make examinations
at the depth of 400 meters are at the site now. A special echo-lead
that can fix big objects is also used. According to the Russian MES,
the wrecks of the plane lay deep in the sea. Specialists do not rule
out that the record boxes won’t be found.

Americans Are Not Interested In The Owner Of Communication

AMERICANS ARE NOT INTERESTED IN THE OWNER OF COMMUNICATION

Lragir.am
03 May 06

Would the United States make investments in the communication sector
of Armenia, considering that the Greek Company OTE is going to sell
the shares of Armentel, and a Russian company might buy them? In a
May 2 news conference the reporters asked this question to U.S.

Ambassador John Evans. The ambassador answered that the United States
is interested in the quality of communication, not more.

He said the only wish to Armenia is to have an efficient,
well-operated, cost-effective and justified communication system.

John Evans said it is utterly important because development of the
Internet is hindered by high costs and a high cost-price.
