TURKEY DOESN’T GIVE UP IDEA OF COMMISSION OF HISTORIANS

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Turkey’s Foreign Minister Ali Babacan said "the
analysis of the shared history of Turkey and Armenia could only
be made with unbiased and impartial scientific evidence," Today’s
Zaman reports.

Babacan who addressed the General Assembly of the Turkish Parliament
Wednesday said, "we will continue to stand by the historic truth."

Babacan said "U.S. President Barack Obama’s statement on the
Armenian Remembrance Day and comments regarding the events of 1915
are unacceptable for Turkey."

"One of the shortcomings of Obama’s statement was that he ignored
the fact that hundreds of thousands Turks lost their lives during
the events of 1915," Babacan said.

"If the motive behind Obama’s statement was to state a prejudgment
on the joint history committee foreseen to be formed by Turkey and
Armenia, Turkish Foreign Ministry have announced on April 25 that
Turkey would not accept this, and explained it in detail to the
U.S. Ambassador who was invited to our Ministry," he said.

Babacan said he also expressed Turkey’s discomfort to U.S. Secretary
of State Hillary Clinton over the phone and made it clear that the
joint commission foreseen to be formed between the two countries
could only depend on undisputed evidence and documents.

Bernard Fassier, co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group (France), called
unprecedented Azeri President Ilham Aliev’s statements on Karabakh’s
security.

During the April 16 meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev,
Aliev said a resolution of the Karabakh conflict should be in line
with the international law.

The Azeri president made quite positive statements in Moscow, Fassier
said at a conference in Yerean.

In his turn, U.S. Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group Matthew Bryza
said Aliev cited Karabakh’s self-government during the Moscow talks,
adding it was the first time he had heard such statements.

The Karabakh conflict broke out in 1988 when Artsakh, mainly populated
by Armenians, declared its independence from Azerbaijan.

On December 10, 1991, a few days after the collapse of the Soviet
Union, a referendum took place in Nagorno-Karabakh, and the majority
of the population (99.89%) voted for independence from Azerbaijan.

Afterwards, large-scale military operations began as a result of
which Azerbaijan lost control over Nagorno-Karabakh and the seven
regions adjacent to it.

On May 12, 1994 after the signing of the Bishkek cease-fire agreement,
the military operations were stopped.

Since 1992, negotiations over the peaceful settlement of the conflict
have been carried out within the OSCE Minsk Grou p, co-chaired by
the USA, Russia and France.

The Sociometre sociological center held a survey on April 18-19 with
the participation of 1650 Yerevan residents. As center Director said
at the April 29 press conference, the number of participants of the
May 31 Yerevan Council of Elders elections will make nearly 42.8%. In
his words, RPA member Gagik Beglarian has the highest rating among
candidates for Mayor’s post. 26.5% respondents considered him to be
worthy of that post. He is followed by RPA leader Levon Ter-Petrosian,
7.6% and BH candidate Haroutiun Kushkian, 5.7%.

According to A. Adibekian’s observation, OYP and ARFD are in the fourth
place. In his words, the latest political developments, in particular,
the fact of ARFD’s coming out of the ruling coalition, can have
both positive and negative impact on ARFD’s rating. According to the
sociologist, Sociometre also plans to hold two more surveys. However,
one thing is clear for A. Adibekian: "Much will depend on the way the
parties will organize their election campaigns." In his opinion, the
party that will present more social programs will have a higher rating.
