NATIONAL REPRESENTATIVE ASSEMBLY CONCLUDES
The Eastern Prelacys National Representative Assembly (NRA) convened
last week at All Saints Armenian Apostolic Church in Glenview,
Illinois. The clergy conference began on Wednesday May 6, and the full
Assembly started their proceedings on
Thursday, May 7 and continued to Saturday, May 9.
In his keynote address to the Assembly, the Prelate spoke about
several themes including last years anniversary celebrations, the
Diaspora situation of the Armenians beginning in the 11th century and
continuing to this day, the need to strengthen the Armenian identity
with national and Christian spirit, and the 2009 Year of the Youth
proclaimed by His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of
Cilicia.

As an introduction to the Year of the Youth and the panel discussions
that took place later, presentations were made by Nayiri Baljian Bell
and Levon Barsoumian, both of whom organized and participated in the
successful Linked In conference for young adults that took place last
September. [Note: Another Linked In is scheduled for this September.]
Nayiri Baljian Bell, drawing on her four years of experience as a
college chaplain and on her masters studies in religious education,
presented three challenges and three opportunities with youth in the
current United States social and cultural context. She emphasized the
importance of understanding the nuanced needs and experiences of
people under the age of 40, highlighting in her presentation that
young people have a gamut of socio-developmental needs and have been
shaped differently by varying social/generational influences.
Levon Barsoumians presentation drew from his experiences at his church
as a parishioner, a trustee, and having experienced and evaluated
different Armenian churches within the Prelacy as well as non-prelacy
churches. His presentations focus was on the theme that improving the
spiritual health and developing community for the church has to be the
first and mandatory step to attracting youth to the church. The second
theme of the presentation was the need for the church to invest in
creating and nurturing youth groups.

Stepanian, and nephew of Rev. Fr. Aram Stepanian, chairman of the
Prelacys Religious Council, and pastor of St. Asdvadzadzin Church in
Whitinsville, Massachusetts..
Archbishop Oshagan, a cousin of the deceased, expressed his personal
sorrow in a message and assured the bereaved survivors that the
comfort and guidance of our Lord in our hour of need sustains us.

DAILY BIBLE READINGS
Bible readings for
today, Thursday, May 14 are: Luke 13:10-21; Acts 19:1-20; 1 John
2:24-25; John 8:21-30; Matthew 15:1-20; Mark 7:31-37.
Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, Why
do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not
wash their hands before they eat. He answered them, And why do you
break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For God
said, Honor your father and your mother, and, whoever speaks evil of
father or mother must surely die. But you say that whoever tells
father or mother, Whatever support you might have had from me is given
to god, then that person need not honor the father. So, for the sake
of your tradition, you make void the word of God. You hypocrites!
Isaiah prophesied rightly about you when he said: This people honors
me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they
worship me teaching human precepts as doctrines.
Then he called the crowd to him and said to them, Listen and
understand: it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person,
but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles. Then the disciples
approached and said to him, Do you know that the Pharisees took
offense when they heard what you said? He answered, Every plant that
my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. Let them alone;
they are blind guides of the blind. And if one blind person guides
another, both will fall into a pit. But Peter said to him, Explain
this parable to us. Then he said, Are you also still without
understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth
enters the stomach, and goes out into the sewer? But what comes out of
the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this is what defiles. For out
of the heart come evil intentions, murder, adultery, fornication,
theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a person, but to
eat with unwashed hands does not defile. Matthew 15:1-20

Rubosh: `I always want to sing happy songs’

Rubosh: `I always want to sing happy songs’
The late Varduhi Vardanyan’s son takes the stage

sh-i-always-want-to-sing-happy-songs
by Lilit Grigoryan
Published: Saturday May 02, 2009

Yerevan – The year is 2007. The place is the Opera and Ballet State
Theater.

It is the memorial for singer Varduhi Vardanyan. Singers and friends
alike are ascending onto the stage; all of them have so much to say
about "Tutush," as she was affectionately called, the "dove of peace"
in Armenian show business. Aside from friends and acquaintances, there
is one more person in the hall; a piece of the singer’s heart and
soul, her son, Ruben. That was the first day that he went on
stage. Perhaps it was at that moment that he realized that the stage
was his.

Rubosh, as he is called, is already 11 years old. Like other children
his age, he goes to school, plays sports, and manages to find time to
hang out with his friends and his little cousin. Of course, playing
computer games is also a part of his day. But aside from his simple
childhood activities and interests, he has a very big and cherished
dream.

"More than anything, I love to sing. My greatest dream is to one day
become a singer, perform on great stages, and be well known like my
mother. I don’t like slow songs. Presently, I have some songs and they
are all upbeat. I have decided to always sing happy and upbeat
songs. I am going to do everything to realize my dream," Rubosh
states.

For the past three years, the aspiring singer has been attending the
Sayat Nova School of Music, where he hopes to continue at the State
Music Theater. Rubosh has already performed at several concerts.

"I love to play the piano. I don’t play all day long, but I do
practice a lot. I have already given a piano recital. In November I
took part in a charity concert for disabled children. I really enjoy
being on stage, especially when I perform with the hip hop dance
group. I always perform with them. They are my good friends," Rubosh
explains.

According to the young singer, he enjoys participating in all
concerts, but for him the greatest experience was being at the
National Music Awards. "I was so happy that I was going to be able to
perform the song "Du Myakn Es" at the music awards. It was a great
concert, and my piece went over very well.

"I want to tell a story about this song. [Composer/singer] Arsen gave
me the song as a gift. Then it turned out that the song had somehow
been erased from his computer. We went to his house only a few days
before the awards ceremony, to prepare it again. Oh, and I forgot to
say that Vahram Petrossian wrote the lyrics," Rubosh smiles.

His first video clip, "Parin e Hakhtum" is about goodness winning; a
mother’s love; warmth; the dream-world of the young singer and the
person who was always by his side, his most cherished mother. This was
his first video clip, but Rubosh still has much more to do.

"I was only 7 years old at the time. But I remember the filming very
well. I was with my mother, and it wasn’t difficult at all. It was
interesting to act in it, because it was my first time, and everything
was new and unfamiliar. I am now getting ready to shoot a new video
clip. We haven’t decided for which song yet, but I think it will be
good," he explains.

Schools days are full of mischief and craziness

"I love school. It’s fun. My favorite subject is geography. It is very
interesting because you learn about new countries. Every once in a
while, I imagine being in the country we are learning about. I also
like English.

When we were smaller, we always used to fight so our teachers would
punish us and not let us take part in class. To be honest, that never
really made us sad. Now we are older, we don’t fight as much. But let
me tell you a story. One of the girls in our class exchanged the chalk
with gum. The teacher at first didn’t realize that a switch had
happened, only when she went to write on the chalkboard did she
realize it. We laughed so hard, and at the end, we were all punished,"
Rubosh says with a smile.

"I have a lot of friends from my neighborhood and from school. We like
to hang out and play. We can spend hours in front of the computer. But
we also like to play outside. I have so, so many friends. Do you want
me to list them? For example, Tigran… oh, but, you don’t even know
them," he smiles innocently.

"When I was little I used to love Van Dam movies. I used to watch them
all day long. I wanted to be strong and confident like he was. I now
go to Gor Vartanyan’s school for karate. When I grow up, I want to be
very strong and not be afraid of anyone.

"A sword in your hand, take a step with confidence,
My love with accompany you everywhere..
I am with you every second,

And always protecting you…"
The lyrics from a familiar song that have perhaps become the guiding
light and strength for the young singer.

Form The Life of Free TV

FORM THE LIFE OF FREE TV
13:28:35 – 08/05/2009

JAMES HAKOBYAN
LRAGIR.AM

On these days, the Armenian TV channels constantly cover the clashes
of the oppositional and Police forces in Georgia, they show injured
people, violence scenes, interviews, opinions, live speech, rubber
cartridges and so on. Our TV channels show even the smallest starch on
the faces of the oppositional activists. This proves that the Armenia
TV broadcasting, as some people affirm, really became free.

It is a pity that the freedom concerns only our neighbors -Turkey,
Georgia, Azerbaijan but, as soon as it crosses the border with
Armenian it again retreats in front the `responsibility’. And, the
responsibility is expressed by the fact that none of the Armenian TV
channels paid attention or tried to shoot the Police officials forbid
the supporters of the opposition to stroll in the North Avenue. This
is just one example that our free TV channels ignored but the clashes
between the Georgian opposition and the Police became one of the main
reports of their news programs.

Of course, it is good for the Armenian society to learn what is
happening in Georgia. But, why our TV channels think that the Armenian
society does not want to be informed about the activities of the
Armenian opposition. The TV channels are good to show the
pre-electoral meetings of the opposition with its electorate, but the
opposition also holds press conferences sometimes. However, the TV
channels ignore these events, or even if they cover them, they only
record the fact.

For instance, when you see a press conference of the opposition in the
afternoon on the topic that on March 1the army deployed illegally in
Yerevan, than, in the evening, you watch the report of the TV
channels, you get the impression that the press conference was about
the spring sowing. But, perhaps, the problems is that the TV channels
do not consider it important to show these vents, because they know
that the Armenian society does not set hopes on their programs but it
has its alternative sources of information.

So, the TV channels may feel completely free, since they are not
obliged to present the reality in the country, as the society is able
to tell each detail of the reality to the TV channels.

Armenian Genocide Won’t Be Discussed In Knesset?

ARMENIAN GENOCIDE WON’T BE DISCUSSED IN KNESSET?

PanARMENIAN.Net
08.05.2009 23:31 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The Knesset plenum in Israel discussed the motion
put forward by Meretz Chairman, MK Haim Oron, proposing that Israel
officially recognize the Armenian Genocide in Turkey during World
War I.

Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan delivered the
government’s response to the motion, saying "I agree that it is our
moral obligation. We have a moral duty to remember the killing of
Armenians." Erdan then read aloud the government’s response, which
objects to commemorating the massacre in the Knesset, ynetnews.com
reports.

Oron files the motion every year, as close as possible to the memorial
day marked on the Armenian calendar, April 24th. The Meretz chairman
discussed the matter with a delegation of Armenian representatives,
clergy and civilians who were watching the Knesset’s debate from the
visitor’s gallery.

"I say – let’s create the parliamentary framework for the Knesset to
discuss an issue I believe the Knesset must discuss," said Oron. "It
is our duty to the Armenian people and to us. There are those who say
we should leave it to historians to determine whether it was genocide.

"There are Holocaust deniers who say exactly the same thing. They rely
on alleged historical sources and say there are doubts regarding the
numbers and figures of the Holocaust. Who else knows like we do that
there are some things you must fight for. Exactly one year ago this
motion moved to the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee’s table,
and there it was buried. I propose that the Education Committee
conduct a procedural discussion on it."

Minister Erdan’s words were brimming with empathy for the Armenian
people, but he also noted the inescapable political ramifications in
regards to Israel’s relationship with Turkey.

"Israel has never denied the terrible acts carried out against the
Armenians, and I am well aware of the intensity of the emotions given
the number of victims and the suffering of the Armenian people."

However, he said, Israel’s position is that "the study of the
events must be done through open discussion, and backed by the
historical data, not a political debate in the Knesset. Because of
our understanding of the pain and suffering, and so that Israel does
not become a side that deals with this from a purely political place,
I ask that we take this issue off the Knesset’s agenda."

TBILISI COURT POSTPONES APPEALS CASE REGARDING CHAKHALYAN’S FRENCH ATTORNEY

Important diaspora politics

Regarding yesterday’s review hearing in a Tbilisi court regarding
the refusal to allow French attorney Patrick Srabian to be register
as Vahagn Chakhalyan’s defense lawyer, the "Yerkir Union" noted that
the hearing ended without result.

The "Yerkir" statement reports that the judge reviewed the documents
submitted, accepted the motion and pronounced the court case to be
opened. Immediately afterwards, the judge ordered that the case be
postponed until May 29.

In its statement, the "Yerkir Union" claims that the Georgian
authorities have adopted a tactic of delay regarding Mr. Arabian’s
registration but that the attorney had already assumed the defense
of Vahagn Chakhalyan and intends to take the case to any and all
international tribunals, including the European Court of Human Rights
if necessary.

The statement goes on to say that the "Yerkir Union" is disappointed
that the Georgian authorities haven’t carried out the promise made
by the Georgian Ambassador to France that Mr. Arabian’s registration
would be enacted.

AGBU Young Professionals of Los Angeles Donate $10,000 to Armenian
Genocide Museum & Institute in Yerevan

Los Angeles – Genocide researchers and museum visitors will now have
access to more valuable historic artifacts and materials, thanks in part
to a $10,000 gift by the AGBU Young Professionals of Los Angeles (YPLA)
to the Armenian Genocide Museum & Institute () in
Yerevan, Armenia.

"When we learned that a recent collection of historically valuable
materials was added to the museum, including nineteenth- and
twentieth-century documents, photographs, coins and rare books, through
a donation from Europe, we were inspired to make a lasting donation to
further enrich this collection," says current AGBU YPLA Chair Narine
Zardarian. The $10,000 gift from the YPLA Committee will allow the
Institute to add to its collection, which is an invaluable archive for
historians and researchers. Some of the new purchases will be displayed
as part of the museum’s permanent collection. All materials purchased
with the AGBU YPLA donation will be listed in the Yerevan Genocide
Museum’s catalogue for researchers, as the "AGBU YPLA Collection." A
successful series of well-attended professional networking events,
signature weekend getaways and social events allowed YPLA to make the
donation to the Armenian Genocide Museum.

The mission of the Museum-Institute is the academic and scientific
study, analysis of the problems, as well as exhibition of the textual
and visual documentation related to the Armenian Genocide. Collections
such as the AGBU YPLA Collection are developed to contribute to the
effective cooperation and collaboration among organizations worldwide,
which are involved in the research of genocide, particularly the
Armenian Genocide. "Genocide recognition is important to all of
humanity. Any contribution we can make to the cause is valuable,"
Zardarian said.

Established in 1906, AGBU () is the world’s largest
non-profit Armenian organization. Headquartered in New York City, AGBU
preserves and promotes the Armenian identity and heritage through
educational, cultural and humanitarian programs, annually touching the
lives of some 400,000 Armenians on six continents.

Lawyer Patrick ArapIan will be held in Tbilisi on May 7, 2009

On May 7, 2009 the first hearing in the case of refusal by the
Ministry of Justice to register Patrick Arapian, a French lawyer and a
member of the Paris Bar, as a court defender of Javakheti political
activist Vahagn Chakhalyan will be held at Tbilisi City Court for
Administrative Cases.

The Chakhalyans’ interest in this case will be represented by Nino
Andriashvili, a lawyer of the Georgian non-governmental organization
`The Human Rights Centre (HRIDC)’ seeking to protect and promote human
rights and basic freedoms in Georgia.

On February 16, 2009, the Ministry of Justice of Georgia, without
providing any explanation refused to register Mr. Arapian as defender
of Vahagn Chahalyan in the ongoing trial. The Ombudsman of Georgia
Sozar Subari, in his letter addressed to the Minister of Justice
Z. Adeishvili recommended that the latter should restore the violated
rights of the Chahalyans family and allow the participation of the
French lawyer, but the Georgian authorities ignored this
recommendation.

At the demonstrations in defense of Vahagn Chakhalyan that took place
in Paris on April 14 and 28, the Ambassador of Georgia to France
Mamuka Kudava received the organizers of the protest action and
promised that the Georgian authorities would give a positive solution
to the question of registration of Patrick Arapian.
