Raffi Hovannisian continues political consultations and starts meetings in
Armenian regions

Yerevan–Raffi Hovannisian, founder and head of the Armenian Center for
National and International Studies, Chairman of the Zharangutiun
(“Heritage”) party, starts a series of meetings with representatives of
public and his supporters in different regions of the country. Raffi
Hovannisian informed representatives of mass media about it at the reception
in honor of the 11th anniversary of foundation of the Center. It’s supposed
that during these meetings he will explain party’s negative position on
draft constitutional amendments put to the referendum. Other issues worrying
the Armenian society will be also discussed during the numerous scheduled
meetings.

In his open address, R.Hovannisian also confirmed that he continues
political consultations on the issue of cooperation with both
representatives of opposition and civil society and the representatives of
Armenian power who realize the seriousness of the situation formed in the
country and the necessity in radical changes.

Mr. Hovannisian considers that the most important task at the current stage
is to hold the referendum exactly in correspondence with the international
obligations assumed by Armenia. He especially emphasized that all the stages
of the process should be democratic and transparent, starting from the
moment of agitation up to the calculation of votes, which should guarantee
the trust of the society in the referendum results.

At best Turkey may Become EU member only together with Armenia.

“We have to state loud and clear that Turkey’s aspirations to become a
member of the European Union correspond with Armenia’s political interests,”
Raffi Hovannisian stated. “It is foreseeable that in its best-case scenario
Turkey can only become an EU member in synchronization with the Republic of
Armenia, and in the process it will have to undergo serious and irreversible
reforms, confront its history, reject any imperial ambitions, and so forge a
comprehensive resolution of all outstanding matters with Armenia,” he
stressed.

In the opinion of R. Hovannisian, the animosity may and should grow into a
partnership, of which the past and current relations between Germany and
Russia, Germany and France, Germany and Israel, or the US and Japan bear
evidence. “In order completely to uncover and acknowledge the historical
truth, we must support Turkey’s pioneers, the growing intellectual movement
which is the brave resumption of those exceptional precedents in 1915 and
beyond when thousands of Turkish families, at the risk of losing their own
lives, endeavored to hide and save individual Armenians from certain death.
My grandmother owed her life to one such righteous family of heroes, who to
this day remain unsung because of official Turkish denialism,” R.
Hovannisian stated.

He proposed the following peace initiative of the Armenian side: ” As a
means of building mutual trust, Armenia might invite bilateral consideration
of the idea of creating, under UN or UNESCO auspices, an international and
demilitarized free economic and cultural Belt of Civilization around the
medieval Armenian capital of Ani and the Biblical slopes of Mt. Ararat.” In
his view, in a short period of time this zone may become an international
tourist center, thus developing the deserted regions of both countries and
creating an opportunity for an uunprecedented bilateral cooperation.

“Foreign policy is privatized just like country’s economy”

“We simply do not have the right to entrust our nation’s destiny to those
who have appropriated its foreign policy in the same way as they have done
with the economy, turning one and the other into a shadow structure driven
by personal gain,” Raffi Hovannisian declared in his open address. According
to him, such a conduct became the reason of the fact that “this mode of
operation has made a mockery of the national interest, has alienated the
country’s citizens from their authorities, and has shaken the foundations of
our once-national solidarity. From the standard-bearer of democracy and
liberty in the region, Armenia is now retreating to the backwaters of
cynical authoritarian dominion.”

Monopoly in policy is so much dengerous as in economy, Raffi Hovannisian
highlighted. In summer we became the witnesses and victims of destructive
consequences of such a monopoly. The telephone and computer sphere having
strategic importance is meant here.

In reply to a possible question, why the subject of complete political and
economic monopoly doesn’t become an occasion for everyday anxiety of mass
media, Raffi Hovannisian said: “Because after the shutdown of “A1+” and
“Noyan Tapan” an indirect monopoly has been established in the public
information realm as well.”

“The weakening of democracy gives birth to monopoly, whereas monopoly
strangles the economy, diplomacy, and ultimately democracy itself,” first RA
Foreign Minister emphasized.

R.Hovannisian declared that “as the incumbent administration continues to
pacify itself and the public with economic growth figures, prestigious
international bodies confirm that more than half of the country’s national
product, and thus of its taxation sphere, is hidden in the shadow,
consequently circumventing the official budget and the citizens’ shares in
it.”

One more chance to connect struggle against terrorism with Artsakh conflict
was missed

“This summer the world was shocked by the attacks of terror in London. The
voices of Armenia and Armenians were all but unheard among the many which
condemned those violent acts,” Raffi Hovannisian mentioned. While, according
to him, “the Armenian leaders’ ineptitude in taking our decisive say on the
anti-terrorism front to the world and duly underscoring our commitment is
sidelining the nation from global developments and is belittling the value
and meaning of our casualties to the common cause.”

In R.Hovannisian’s opinion, the authorities missed one more opportunity to c
onnect the general struggle against terrorism with the Artsakh conflict in
the best way. “It was the opportune time to remind the civilized world that,
only a few years ago, the people of Artsakh who were battling for their
right to live also had come face to face with Afghan mujahaddins and
mercenary pilots bombing civilian targets in peaceful towns. By failing to
present to the world the captured foreign mercenaries and the documents
confiscated from them as hard evidence of our noteworthy contribution to the
war on international terror, the mediocre official and his obsequious
diplomacy once again turned out to be spineless.”

“While abroad they were telling duplicitous tales about their own integrity,
they failed widely to publicize the fact that during the
Karabagh-Azerbaijani war the adversary’s positions in Shushi were defended
by the notorious Shamil Bassaev, who later on organized the pogrom of
hundreds of innocent people in allied Russia. Not surprisingly, the heroic
stand of Artsakh in the name of human rights and liberties, which once
enjoyed worldwide support, has turned into a mere territorial issue being
examined within the strictures of international bureaucracy,” Raffi
Hovannisian declared.

System Of A Down Is The Band With The Anti-Plan

SYSTEM OF A DOWN IS THE BAND WITH THE ANTI-PLAN
By Ross Raihala

Pioneer Press, St. Paul, Minn.
October 10, 2005, Monday

With its innovative, complex music and surreal lyrics, System of a Down
isn’t just the most unusual band in metal (that’s the closest genre
that fits the virtually unclassifiable band). It’s quite possibly
the weirdest million-seller on the charts.

“I love that,” said vocalist Serj Tankian during a phone interview
from Manhattan. “We’ve really never approached anything from the
typical angle. We came into the music scene in L.A. from left field.

“We always did our own thing, taking everyone’s career advice and
then not following it.”

So far, the anti-plan has worked.

The Armenian-American quartet is having its most successful year to
date. The band launched “Mezmerize” in the spring with an instantly
sold-out guerrilla club tour. Follow-up disc “Hypnotize” hits stores
in November and is already one of the fall’s most hotly anticipated
releases.

“‘Mezmerize’ and ‘Hypnotize’ are really one record divided into two,”
Tankian said. “It’s not a concept album in terms of completing a story,
but it is kind of like completing a circle.”

Critics have long praised System of a Down’s unbridled creativity,
which brings a Frank Zappa-esque sense of the surreal to pounding,
operatic and politically charged metal. But it’s the kids who fill
the mosh pits at SOAD shows and have snatched up more than 10 million
copies of the band’s albums worldwide.

Does Tankian ever worry his young fans might be missing some of System
of a Down’s more subtle commentary in favor of merely rocking out?

“No, no _ rocking out is the reason why we’re doing this,” he said.

“I think as long as people instinctively feel our music, they don’t
have to psychologically analyze it.

“A lot of people do come up with all sorts of theories and
understandings from the lyrics. A lot of people don’t, too, and that’s
OK. We just want people to connect to our music in some way.”

Tankian points to the song “B.Y.O.B.” As far as SOAD goes, it’s a
fairly straightforward protest song with pointed lyrics: “Why don’t
presidents fight the war? Why do they always send the poor?”

“You may not be anti-war yourself,” he said, “but you will definitely
feel the power of the sarcasm in that song. You don’t have to theorize
about it _ you just feel it.”

But there’s also a satirical side to System of a Down that often gets
overlooked amid all the anger.

“There has been such a focus on the political aspect of the band or
the heritage aspect of the band,” Tankian said. “But I think people
are starting to get now that humor is a huge part of what we do, too.”

JOURNALISTE TURC CONDAMNE POUR DES PROPOS SUR LES ARMENIENS

SwissInfo, Suisse
7 Octobre 2005

Big fat Greek wedding ship

BRIDES (PG)

A POPULAR choice as opening-night film at this month’s Greek Film
Festival, Pantelis Voulgariss’s drama — his first international
production — is sure to resonate with mainstream moviegoers simply
looking for a well-acted, well-told adult story.

A box-office hit in veteran Voulgariss’s native Greece, the project
attracted Italian-American maestro Martin Scorsese as executive
producer.

Scorsese’s personal links to America’s immigrant experience no doubt
provided reminders of the Greek experience portrayed here.

While Voulgariss isn’t particularly effective at suggesting the
ship’s movements for the scenes that provide the bulk of the
locations, interest is held by the human drama being played out on
the S.S. King Alexander in the 1920s.

The ship is carrying 700 passengers — young women from Greece,
Turkey, Russia and Armenia — bound for America and arranged marriage
to strangers.

Perhaps looking to broaden the appeal of a story that could have been
treated in documentary fashion, Voulgariss has opted to focus on a
romance that develops between an American photographer, Norman Harris
(Irish actor Damian Lewis) and one of the intended brides, Niki
(Victoria Haralabidou).

She’s a dressmaker from Samothrace who is bound for Chicago to fulfil
a marriage contract a younger sister has broken because of
home-sickness.

There’s suspense as the King Alexander gets closer to New York. Will
Niki fulfil her heart’s desire and accept Norman’s marriage proposal,
or will she stay true to her family honour and go ahead with the
planned marriage?

More could have been made of the taxing conditions in third class
where the bulk of the women travelled.

It’s left to veteran British actor-director Steven Berkoff to provide
the film’s dramatic element as a nasty Russian marriage broker
Karaboulat not beyond trading the innocent young women as sex slaves
during the voyage.

Most of the performances are above-average, with Dimitris Katalifos
as the ship’s captain whose mind-set is getting his passengers to New
York with a minimum of fuss, and Andrea Ferreol as a colourful madam
who makes the voyage livelier than the brides, who are kept pretty
much in the background.

Issues Of The Establishment Of Armenia-Italy Chamber Of CommerceDisc

THE ISSUES OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF ARMENIA-ITALY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE DISCUSSED

National Assembly of RA, Armenia
Oct 6 2005

On October 5 Artur Baghdasaryan, RA NA President met the delegation
headed by Adolpho Urso, Deputy Minister for Productive Activities
of the Republic of Italy. Marco Clemente, the Ambassador of Italy to
Armenia participated at the meeting.

Italian culture in Armenia, which creates opportunity once again for
the Armenian-Italian close relations and interpenetration of cultures.

Mr. Urso noted that besides cultural programme, there are 30
businessmen in the delegation. The sides discussed issues of
strengthening economic relations, assisting the development of small
and medium entrepreneurship and deepening of regional cooperation.

Artur Baghdasaryan highlighted the establishment of the Italian
Chamber of Commerce in Armenia, which in its turn can become a good
mechanism of the development of trade-economic, scientific-educational
and historical-cultural relations.

During the meeting the sides also discussed issues of mutual interest.

SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE REACTS ON EU DECISION TO START NEGOTIATIONS WITH TURKEY

Strasbourg, 03.10.2005 – “Turkey is a part of Europe”, said Terry
Davis, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, reacting to the
news of a last-minute compromise between the EU 25 members on the
opening of membership negotiations with Turkey.

“Details of the proposal are not yet known, but while we are waiting
for Turkey’s response, I wish to stress again the importance of the
outcome of these negotiations, not only for Turkey and the EU but
for Europe as a whole and indeed world.

The issue has never been whether Turkey is a part of Europe – the
Council of Europe answered this question 65 years ago when Turkey
joined our organization. The question has been whether the EU would
rise to the occasion and understand the importance of the fact that
a country with a big and predominantly Islamic population is ready
and willing to embrace the values of democracy, human rights and the
rules of law.

If the negotiations with the EU indeed start – and I wholeheartedly
hope so – this will only be the beginning of a long process. Turkey
deserves a fair deal and the pace of the negotiations must be set
by its achievements in implementing reforms, not by polls elsewhere
in Europe. Public opinion is very important, but it is not immune
to prejudice. With so much at stake, political leaders should lead,
and not just follow”, he concluded

Turkey & EU Open Negotiations

TURKEY & EU OPEN NEGOTIATIONS
Written by Brussels journalist David Ferguson

Euro-reporters.com, Belgium
Oct 4 2005

“We’ve just made history,” said UK Foreign Minister Jack Straw
opening negotiations with Turkey on EU membership. Delayed by over
six hours due to persistent objections by Austria, negotiations
with the predominantly Muslim country were formally opened early this
morning. Speaking alongside Straw was European Enlargement Commissioner
Olli Rehn and Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul.

“I was always confident to reach an agreement for 3 October. It is
essential for us to keep our commitments. This is what we have done
now and will do in the future. We are starting a new era with Turkey,”
said Rehn.

Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul arrived late on Monday night,
only after Austria’s claim to a clause on an alternative ‘privileged
partnership’ had been removed: “The most important thing is that
Turkey has received a full membership perspective and there is no
alternative,” said Gul. “When the time comes we will become full
members, We will overcome the obstacles and we are not the only ones
with problems. This will be worth the effort,” said Gul.

Turkey, a Muslim country of 72 million people, has been trying to
enter the European Union, and its predecessors, for over 40 years.

Objections included the state of human rights, treatment of ethnic
and religious minorities such as the Kurds, and Ankara’s refusal
to recognize the Republic of Cyprus or the Armenian genocide. EU
negotiations are expected to last at least 15 years.
