BAKU, February 9. /TASS/. Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov has discussed the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh with Wendy Morton, Minister for European Neighborhood and the Americas at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, the press service of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry informed on Tuesday.

“Bayramov informed his British colleague [Wendy Morton] of the current situation in the region and the process of adhering to the provisions of the trilateral agreements on Karabakh dated November 9 and January 11. It was noted that adherence to these agreements would help ensure peace and security in the region and create opportunities for cooperation,” the message says. The Azerbaijani minister stressed that the republic had taken all the necessary steps from its side to adhere to the provisions.

For her part, Morton stressed the importance of cooperation between both states in the sphere of gender equality, fight against climate change and development of green energy. The minister stressed that the UK is ready to aid Azerbaijan’s demining of its territories.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry noted that the sides had exchanged opinions on a number of bilateral issues, namely in the sphere of energy.

Earlier on Tuesday, Morton met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. During the meeting, he said that the seventh session of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council is set to take place in Baku this week. Achievements and prospects of cooperation will be considered, he said.

Renewed clashes between Azerbaijan and Armenia erupted on September 27, 2020, with intense battles raging in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. The conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed territory that had been part of Azerbaijan before the Soviet Union break-up, but primarily populated by ethnic Armenians, broke out in February 1988 after the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region announced its withdrawal from the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. In 1992-1994, tensions boiled over and exploded into large-scale military action for control over the enclave and seven adjacent territories after Azerbaijan lost control of them.

On November 9, 2020, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a joint statement on a complete ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh starting from November 10. The Russian leader said the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides would maintain the positions that they had held and Russian peacekeepers would be deployed to the region. Besides, Baku and Yerevan must exchange prisoners and the bodies of those killed.

Why were Armenia-made drones virtually not used in Karabakh war?

News.am, Armenia
Feb 9 2021

YEREVAN. – The lack of large-scale use of Armenian-made drones is due to the lack of mass production; Hakob Arshakyan, Minister High-Tech Industry of Armenia, told this to a press conference on Tuesday.

He added that funding projects have been accepted for the development and production of attack and reconnaissance drones, and some of them have already been completed. According to Arshakyan, Armenia needs to achieve production opportunities for both types of these drones.

“The [Armenian-made] reconnaissance UAVs, which are not inferior to competitors in their parameters, have been used in [the recent war in] Karabakh [Artsakh] and have performed well. The UAVs that were not tested but were ready were also used, “Arshakyan said.

And when asked why footage on the operation of the Armenian-made drones was virtually not made public—as the adversary was doing, the minister explained that since the matter was about intelligence apparatus, the information provided the latter is confidential and not subject to publication.

During today’s Cabinet meeting Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinhyan touched upon “I Am Travelling Without COVID-19” project and its implementation process, stating that a great flow of people arriving in Armenia has been observed since the launch of the program.

“This is an economic factor because during the past year many of our compatriots who wished to visit Armenia didn’t have that opportunity and now, when the air communication has resumed with Russia, it is expected that our compatriots will arrive in Armenia”, Pashinyan said.

Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan clarified that the travel model which they have agreed over with the Russian and Belarusian partners was a one-month pilot project, but according to yesterday’s decision that one-month has been removed. “Starting from February 15 we will have four flights a week on both directions. Within these three days 3900 people have left Armenia, and 3400 arrived in Armenia”, he said, adding that the number of people who departed with Armenian passports is 1423, and the number of those who arrived in Armenia with Armenian passports is 1263.

As for those citizens who departed for Russia and then returned back due to some problems, the deputy PM said this has no connection with the project app. But he noted that they will assist in solving that problem within their capacities.

PM Pashinyan tasked to conduct a necessary communication with the citizens so that they will be fully aware of the app. According to him, the resumption of regular flights with Russia will contribute to the development of tourism.

Message of Karabakh President’s Chief of Staff on occasion of Armenian Army Day

News.am, Armenia
Jan 28 2021

Chief of Staff of the President of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) Artak Beglaryan posted the following on his Facebook page:

“Today is the hardest day for us Armenians to celebrate since the declaration of independence, but in any case, congratulations on the occasion of Armenian Army Day and Homeland Defender’s Day!

Our pain and losses are infinite, just like our dues and real expectations.

Yes, since establishment, a lot has been done for the functioning of Armenian statehood and the army, but there have been crucial mistakes and omissions that led to the current situation.

If we Armenians truly want to fix the mistakes and continue the path to empowerment of statehood, we need to be smart and work hard, as well as analyze, properly assess the global risks and raise the level of effectiveness of governance systems.

I congratulate and thank everyone who has made a certain contribution to homeland defense and the functioning of the Armenian Army, and as for the martyred boys and men, we have no right to forget about our great moral duties to them for a minute.”
