Ex-Artsakh PM urges supporters to join opposition rally in Yerevan on Feb. 20

Former Prime Minister of Artsakh Anushavan Danielyan calls on his supporters to take an active part in the opposition rally at Yerevan’s Liberty Square on Saturday, February 20, to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

“I believe that every citizen must join the struggle for Armenia and Artsakh, for the future of our people. Together we will save our homeland,” Danielyan wrote on Facebook.

California State Assembly member introduces ‘Stop Investment in Turkey Act’

California State Assembly member Chris Holden introduced the Stop Investment in Turkey Act, AB 1019, that will mandate the state  to stop all new investments or renew existing investments issued or owned by Turkey using the full force of the California government to pressure Turkey to recognize the Armenian Genocide and takes steps towards justice to its victims, Asbarez reports.

“An unrepentant Turkey prevents justice for the families of Armenian Genocide survivors, and makes Turkey a more dangerous country for their minority communities and neighboring Armenia,” said Assemblymember Chris Holden. “Continued investment in the Government of Turkey signals implicit support for their actions, and it needs to stop.”

“Now is the time for California to stand up for truth and justice for the Armenian Genocide with meaningful action,” said Holden.

The ANCA Western Region expressed gratitude to Mr. Holden for introducing the bill.

The Armenian Missionary Association of America started its mission in Artsakh in 1995, after the first Artsakh war. The organization began implementing programs to support locals in the region by implementing many social, educational and cultural programs. The main directions of activities are kindergartens, “Shogh” development centers, sponsorship of socially vulnerable families, and a number of other social programs.

Because of the recent war in Artsakh, the AMAA has decided to expand its activities, because according to them, now the people of Artsakh need it very much.

COVID-19: Armenia reports 123 new cases, 293 recoveries in one day

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 9, ARMENPRESS. 123 new cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) have been confirmed in Armenia in the past one day, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 168,300, the ministry of healthcare said today.

293 more patients have recovered in one day. The total number of recoveries has reached 160,169.

3 more patients have died, raising the death toll to 3126.

2269 tests were conducted in the past one day.

The number of active cases is 4221.

The number of people who had been infected with COVID-19 but died from other disease has reached 784 (1new such case).

Armenian, French FMs discuss issues of regional stability and security

Foreign Minister Ara Aivazian had a telephone conversation with French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian. In the follow-up to the previous contacts, the Foreign Ministers had a comprehensive discussion on regional stability and security issues, referred to the steps taken to address the humanitarian situation in Artsakh and the challenges facing the Armenians of Artsakh.

In the context of urgent humanitarian issues, the Armenian Foreign Minister stressed the repatriation of Armenian prisoners of war and civilians, emphasizing the inadmissibility of Azerbaijan to create obstacles in that process. In this regard, Foreign Minister Aivazian thanked his French counterpart for always keeping the issue high on the agenda.

The Foreign Ministers stressed the need to address the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairmanshp, and exchanged views on the upcoming schedule of the Co-Chairs’ activities.

The foreign ministers of Armenia and France also discussed issues on the bilateral agenda. The interlocutors highly assessed the recent visit of the delegation of the Secretary of State Jean-Baptiste Lemoine to Armenia on the instruction of the President of France Emanuel Macron to discuss the prospects of cooperation in spheres of mutual interest, exchange views on further steps to be taken.

Foreign Ministers Ayvazyan and Le Drian attached importance to the continuation of consultations and consultations at different levels.

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 9, ARMENPRESS. Vice Speaker of Parliament Lena Nazaryan received new Ambassador of China to Armenia Fan Yong, the Armenian parliament reports.

The Vice Speaker congratulated the Ambassador on assuming office in Armenia.

The sides discussed the recent war launched against Artsakh, the trilateral statement signed on November 9, 2020, highlighting the implementation of its provisions.

Lena Nazaryan emphasized the urgency of the return of the Armenian prisoners of war from Azerbaijan.

In turn the Chinese Ambassador highlighted the establishment of the ceasefire and expressed hope that all issues will be resolved.

“They also discussed the launch of Armenia-China direct flight, the implementation of joint programs in several areas. Despite the pandemic the relations between Armenia and China have been maintained, even a growth has been registered in the trade-economic sector. The trade turnover has comprised almost one billion USD”, the Parliament’s press service reported.

The Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region Board of Directors, regional and national staff, as well as local ANCA chapter leaders held a productive meeting on Monday with Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA-30).

ANCA-WR representatives briefed Congressman Sherman on the latest developments in the region following the Turkish-Azerbaijani aggression and 44-day war waged against Artsakh and Armenia with the assistance of terrorist mercenaries from Syria. Chief among the topics discussed were the issues relating to the deployment of immediate U.S. humanitarian aid to Armenia and Artsakh, strict enforcement of Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act as well as sanctions and other punitive measures against Turkish and Azerbaijani regimes, and the immediate return of Armenian POWs still in Azerbaijani captivity.

“Rep. Sherman has been a champion of Armenian-American policy priorities throughout his quarter century service in the U.S. Congress,” remarked ANCA-WR Chair Nora Hovsepian, Esq. “We are grateful for the many years of friendship that our community and our organization have enjoyed with the Congressman and look forward to working together to meet today’s pressing challenges posed by Turkey and Azerbaijan to the U.S. national interests in the South Caucasus as well as further developing the U.S.-Armenia strategic partnership.”

Pashinyan meets My Step faction: Society does not require snap elections

The My Step parliamentary faction met Sunday with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Those present noted that the proposal of the Prime Minister to hold snap parliamentary elections did not receive a positive response from the parliamentary opposition, and the population does not require snap elections as well.

The My Step faction continues to support the Prime Minister and the government in implementing the road card presented November 18.

    

Armenian community head: Borders are being specified with use of GPS every day

The demarcation of borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan near Khndzoresk community of Armenia’s Syunik Province has not yet been completed, its head, Yervand Malunts, told Panorama.am on Saturday, referring to reports alleging the Armenian side retreated further from the border area.

The community head said every day the borders are being specified with the use of GPS, and Armenians withdraw from the areas which are marked as Azerbaijani by the positioning system.

Asked whether the Armenian side has made concessions recently, Yervand Malunts gave a negative response.

“Now the enemy forces are stationed only several hundred meters away from us on the left and are at a distance of 5 km on the right. The demarcation and delimitation process is yet to be completed in order to understand whether a new problem will emerge or not. What other major problems and losses can we possibly talk about after handing over 150 km of our liberated lands to them?” Malunts said.

Armenian director’s film included in competition program of prestigious French film festival

“Beyond the Threshold”, an Armenian short film directed by Angineh Isanians has been selected for the International Competition of the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, a prestigious French film festival held annually in Clermont-Ferrand.

The film which is the director’s debut work is a social drama that received the financial support of the National Cinema Center of Armenia in 2019, the center said in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

9 Armenian films have been submitted to the film festival, 5 of which were made with the financial support of the Cinema Center.
