GREEK PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT RECALLING 1955 RIOTS ATTACKED IN ISTANBUL
Agence France Presse — English
September 6, 2005 Tuesday 9:24 PM GMT
Ultra-nationalist Turkish militants attacked an exhibit in Istanbul
of rare photographs of violent anti-Greek incidents that occurred in
the city 50 years ago, ripping photos off the walls and throwing eggs
at the display.
Shouting “Turkey is Turkish and will stay that way,” the assailants
burst into the exhibit on its opening night, scuffling with the guests.
Riot police arrived and roughly rounded up the militants, arresting
three of them, police said.
“I’m merely defending my country,” one militant told AFP.
Serious riots that broke out in Istanbul on the night of September 6,
1955, led to looting in Greek neighborhoods and the destruction of
many of the city’s churches and synagogues.
More than 5,000 shops belonging to the Greek minority were looted
by an emotional crowd of several thousand people reacting to rumors
of a bomb attack at the birthplace of the founder of modern Turkey,
Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, in Salonika, northern Greece.
The army had to intervene to quell the violence.
Turkey is officially 99 percent Muslim. Its 45,000 Armenians, 35,000
Jews, 20,000 Syrians and 4,000 Greek Orthodox faithful live primarily
in Istanbul.
Known as Constantinople under Greece’s last great empire, Istanbul
remains the seat of the Eastern Orthodox patriarchate, the highest
authority in the Orthodox world.

Azeri CEC: Armenian Observers Cannot Take Part In Elections
AZERI CEC: ARMENIAN OBSERVERS CANNOT TAKE PART IN THE ELECTIONS
DeFacto, Armenia
Sept 5 2005
According to the Azeri CEC, representatives of Armenia cannot take part
in the Azeri Parliamentarian elections on November 6 as observers.
“Azerbaijan has no diplomatic ties with Armenia, so the Armenian
representatives cannot take part in the elections as observers”,
stated AR CEC International Department Head Rovzat Gasymov during the
interview for Trend Agency. In his words, even though the Armenian
observers are in the CIS mission, they cannot visit Azerbaijan with
the Armenian passports. “If we do not have diplomatic ties with
Armenia, how can the observers arrive in Azerbaijan with Armenian
passports? That is the Central Electoral Commission’s stand. Azeri
Foreign Ministry may hold its own position on the issue”, said Gasymov.
According to Day.az, CIS Executive Secretary Vladimir Roushajlo said
if Armenia wished to take part in the elections’ monitoring it was
its right. He noted the leadership of the country holding elections
had filed a note to CIS to send observers to the elections. “We send
the notes to CIS countries, including Armenia”, stated Roushajlo.
Van Nistelrooij delights Dutch

Van Nistelrooij delights Dutch
Saturday, 3 September 2005
by Khachik Chakhoyan
Ruud van Nistelrooij’s goal midway through the second half saved the
Netherlands’ blushes as they scraped a win in Armenia to strenghten
their place at the head of FIFA World Cup qualifying Group 1.
Stylish finish
Manchester United FC striker Van Nistelrooij was kept quiet for most
of the game by some solid Armenian defending, but it took him only one
shot to decide the game in favour of visitors. On 64 minutes Khalid
Boulahrouz crossed into the area, Philip Cocu won the aerial challenge
and when the ball dropped the ball to Van Nistelrooij, he finished in
style.
Berezovski heroics
Goalkeeper Roman Berezovski was undoubtedly the man of the match for
Armenia as he helped to keep the Dutch at bay for most of the
encounter. On eight minutes he denied Van Nistelrooij from a dangerous
shot, while on 31 minutes Dirk Kuyt’s powerful header from point-blank
range was brilliantly saved. Arsenal FC’s Robin van Persie was also
denied by the goalkeeper in the first half.
Armenia blow
Armenia were dealt a blow when they lost their young star Edgar
Manucharyan, after a bright start, to a 17th-minute injury. Ara
Hakobyan came on to form a duo with his brother Aram and had the home
side’s best chance just three minutes after coming on, just failing to
connect after Cocu misjudged a header back to his own goalkeeper.
Dutch top
On Wednesday the Dutch hope to reinforce their position further when
they play host to the group’s bottom side, Andorra. Armenia,
meanwhile, travel to the Czech Republic with their hopes of
qualification already over.

Argentina’s Minister Wraps Up Armenian Visit
ARGENTINA’S MINISTER WRAPS UP ARMENIAN VISIT
Armenpress
Aug 31, 2005
YEREVAN, AUGUST 31, ARMENPRESS: Before wrapping up a two-day official
visit to Armenia, Argentina’s foreign and trade minister Rafael Bielsa
took a stroll around Armenia’s main Zvartnots airport, managed by an
Argentine company, Corporacion America, owned by an ethnic Armenian
billionaire Eduardo Eurnekian.
The Armenian government approved last week a revised master plan
of the company that pledged to increase its declared investments of
$84 million to $105 million for building another Zvartnots terminal
to keep up with growing air travel to and from Armenia. Corporacion
America took over Zvartnots in 2002 after signing a 30-year management
contract with the Armenian government.
Asked by reporters to describe his country’s relations with Armenia
Bielsa said they are ‘excellent.” He also praised the 100,000 strong
Armenian community in his country, saying they are an integral part
of the society. He also said he was greatly impressed by a visit
to Argentinean school in Yerevan and by a meeting with Catholicos
Karekin II.
Bielsa said officials of his country’s foreign ministry will come to
Armenia soon to find a convenient location in Yerevan for Argentina’s
embassy here, that will most likely start operating before the end
of the year.

Censorship Prohibits Atom Egoyan’s Last Film
CENSORSHIP PROHIBITS ATOM EGOYAN’S LAST FILM
ISTANBUL, AUGUST 26, NOYAN TAPAN – ARMENIANS TODAY. According to the “Sabah”
newspaper, Atom Egoyan’s last film “Where the Truth Hiden” met ban of the
American censorship because of presence of open sexual scenes. “Call me naive
if you want, but I really didn’t think that these scenes may be prohibited by
the censorship, so I didn’t prepare a second variant,” Egoyan said. According
to “Marmara,” famous cinemas in the USA refuse to show films prohibited by
the censorship. But the film reporter of “Gyunaiten” who informed about all
these, wrote that such films with open sexual scenes were shown during the
Cannes festival compared with which scenes of Egoyan’s film are mild, and the
punishment envisaged for them is not justified.
