GLOBAL CRISIS BITES INTO ARMENIA DUE TO WORLD MARKET INFLUENCE ON ARMENIAN ECONOMY: RESEARCH

ARKA
May 7, 2009

YEREVAN, May 7. /ARKA/. The global economic crisis has hit Armenia
hard due to a strong interrelation between the Armenian and global
economies, Chairman of Economy and Values Research Centre Manuk
Yergnyan said Wednesday at Novosti International Press Centre in
Yerevan.

Summing up the results of research on the influence of the global
economic crisis on Armenia, he said "low economic diversification,
mining industry-oriented exports, as well as the country’s dependence
on foreign remittances accelerated penetration of the global crisis
into the domestic economy."

The ongoing economic slowdown has hit the construction sector hard,
according to Yergnyan.

He pointed out the positive impact of the Armenian national currency
devaluation on some of the local businesses. "We may expect more
tangible results by the end of the second quarter," the economist
added.

With a very small share in the country’s economy, the local banks
were able to escape serious economic shocks, the expert said.

On March 3, the Central Bank of Armenia (CBA) officially returned
to the flexible exchange rate policy. According to CBA experts, the
Armenian dram vs. U.S. dollar exchange rate is expected to range from
360 drams to 380 drams per $1.

Conducting research entitled the Situational Assessment of the Global
Cr isis Impact on Armenia’s Economy, the center Economy and Values
aimed at giving the real picture of the country’s economic situation.

In the past two months, the research centre polled 1,000 local
households and 60 small-to-medium-sized enterprises.

Georgia Claims It Quashed Russian-Backed Army Mutiny

GEORGIA CLAIMS IT QUASHED RUSSIAN-BACKED ARMY MUTINY

Irish Times
Wednesday, May 6, 2009

Officials initially said the alleged mutiny at the Mukhrovani tank
base near the capital, Tbilisi, was part of a military coup against
Mr Saakashvili, but later said its main aim had been to disrupt major
Nato exercises in Georgia that are due to start today.

Some three hours after news broke of the uprising, about 30 tanks and
armoured personnel carriers rumbled into the base, followed later by
Mr Saakashvili and his defence and interior ministers.

"The plan was to stage a large-scale mutiny in Tbilisi and to take
steps against the sovereignty of Georgia and Georgia’s European and
Euro-Atlantic integration," Mr Saakashvili said. "I demand that our
northern neighbour refrain from provocations." It was not clear how
many of the 500 soldiers at the base were involved in the incident,
but their commander was arrested and police said several other former
military officers were being investigated.

Interior ministry spokesman Shota Utiashvili said the mutiny had been
put down without any violence. "The plan was co-ordinated with Russia,
at a minimum to disrupt Nato military exercises and at a maximum to
organise a large-scale military rebellion in Georgia," he said.

"We have information that the rebels were in direct contact with
Russians, that they were receiving orders from them,20that they were
receiving money from them."

Moscow has been at odds with Mr Saakashvili since he ousted an
ex-Soviet old guard in the 2003 Rose revolution, vowed to lead Georgia
into Nato and became the West’s strongest ally in the volatile
Caucasus region, which the Kremlin still regards as part of its
"sphere of influence".

Russian forces crushed Mr Saakashvili’s attempt last August to retake
the rebel Georgian region of South Ossetia, which Moscow subsequently
recognised as an independent state along with another separatist
enclave, Abkhazia. Last week, Russian troops formally took control of
border security in the two provinces, and Moscow officials condemned
Nato’s plans for military exercises in Georgia.

"It would make more sense to hold the exercises in a lunatic asylum,"
said Dmitry Rogozin, Russia’s envoy to Nato, who poured scorn on Mr
Saakashvili’s "insane accusations".

Nato said the month-long exercises, involving 19 members and partners
of the alliance, would take place as planned. Only Armenia – a Russian
ally in the Caucasus – pulled out after yesterday’s events.

Analysts suggested the alleged mutiny could be linked to plans to use
the military to break up month-long protests against Mr Saakashvili. "I
have the impression this is nothing but a theatrical show staged by
Saakashvili to distract people from the20ongoing protests against
his rule," said one opposition leader, David Gamkrelidze.

Activists urging support for the recognition of Armenian Genocide
02.05.2009 22:36 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Five activists from Rhode Island traveled last week
to Washington, DC for the "End the Cycle of Genocide" advocacy days
organized by the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) and the
Genocide Intervention Network (GI-Net), reported the ANC of Rhode
Island (ANC-RI).

`It is our duty as victims of genocide to meet and urge lawmakers to
take action,’ commented ANC-RI Chair George Mangalo. `Decisive action
needs to be taken to ensure the proper recognition of the Armenian
Genocide as well as ending the genocide in Darfur.’

Over the course of several days, ANC-RI activists met with the entire
congressional delegation from the Ocean State. The group also met with
Senators Sheldon Whitehouse and Jack Reed. Throughout the meetings,
the activists stressed the importance of recognition of the Armenian
Genocide and asked for support to help end the genocide in Darfur. The
activists also requested that the current aid levels to Armenia and
Karabagh be increased and end to military aid to Azerbaijan. On all
these issues, the Rhode Island activists received positive feedback
from their Members of Congress.

On April 24th, Sen. Jack Reed, an active supporter of human rights
issues, made a statement on the Senate floor in recognition of the
Armenian Genocide.

ABDUL-QADER: "ISRAEL ISSUED ORDERS TO DEMOLISH CONSTRUCTIONS BELONGING TO EAST JERUSALEM CHURCH"

International Middle East Media Center

April 30 2009

Hatim Abdul-Qader, Jerusalem Affairs advisor to the Palestinian Prime
Minister, stated on Wednesday at night that the Jerusalem Municipality
issued orders to demolish constructions that are located in historical
churches and monasteries in the Old City of Jerusalem.

Abdul-Qader stated that some Christian leaders in Jerusalem asked him
to intervene and stop an Israeli order to demolish two floors built
on top of the Armenian Church in the Old City.

The Church is one of the main Christian sites and was built more than
150 years ago; it is built on Church land and registered under the
name of the Belgium king.

Abdul-Qader added that the building was constructed as a residence
for priests and clergymen who come from the Vatican to visit Jerusalem.

He stated that the Israeli decision is a violation to Christian Holy
sites, and considered it a challenge to the Pope who will be visiting
the region.

"Such a decision reveals the Israeli intentions to wipe Arab, Muslim
and Christian history in Jerusalem", Abdul-Qader stated, "This is
yet another Israeli violation that disregards Christian and Muslim
presence and identity in the holy city".

He added that the Pope, who will be visiting the region, will be
informed on the Israeli violations, and will also be informed on the
illegal Israeli measures baring Muslim and Christian Palestinians
from reaching their holy sites.

House Speaker Pelosi Discusses Genocide Recognition At UCLA

HOUSE SPEAKER PELOSI DISCUSSES GENOCIDE RECOGNITION AT UCLA

_4/29/2009_1
Wednesday, April 29, 2009

LOS ANGELES, CA–Representatives from the Armenian National
Committee–Western Region (ANC-WR) Board, staff, supporters and
former interns attended an event at the UCLA School of Law featuring
US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The event, hosted by the Williams Institute, the Department of Women
Studies and the Center for the Study of Women, took place on Thursday,
April 16th. On campus to discuss her recent book, "Know Your Power:
A Message to America’s Daughters."

Pelosi also touched on several current event issues including the
economy and Afghanistan as well as the genocide in Darfur, the Rwandan
Genocide, and the Armenian Genocide.

During the question and answer session, ANC-WR Board Member Aida
Dimejian asked the Speaker if she thought President Obama would
unequivocally reaffirm the Armenian Genocide in his upcoming remarks
commemorating April 24th. Responding to the question, Pelosi noted
that "the President is a values-based person" and reiterated that
the issue of the Armenian Genocide has always been a top priority of
hers. Touching on the human face of the issue, she recalled of seeing
the aged genocide survivors that attended the October 2007 vote on
H.Res.106 in the US House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Pelosi also took the opportunity to introduce Hassan Bubacar Jallow,
Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, who
joined the community in the packed auditorium for the event. In
concluding her remarks regarding genocide, she emphasized that
it was important that "we act upon the issue in a way which makes
a difference."

Raffi Kassabian, a member of the ANC-WR’s State and Regional Affairs
Committee as well as a recent alumnus of the UCLA School of Law
(’08) and the ANCA Leo Sarkisian Internship (’02) was impressed by
the visible impact that the issue of genocide made during the event.

"Having the Speaker both address this important issue and introduce
Prosecutor Jallow during the discussion really drew the attention
of the audience. There was a palpable appreciation for the cycle
of genocide of which we, as Armenian Americans, are all too aware,"
said Kassabian.

"Know Your Power: A Message to America’s Daughter’s", written to
address the public’s interest in Pelosi’s groundbreaking rise from
local public servant to the Speaker of the US House of Representatives,
touches on several recurring themes including the message of never
losing faith and the importance of addressing human rights issues
with a foundational commitment to truth.

This was readily apparent to Tamar Tavlian, a second year student at
Pasadena City College and an alumna of the ANC-WR Internship-Externship
Program (Summer ’08) who also attended the event. She along with
Dimejian, Kassabian, and long-time ANC supporter Elizabeth Boyajian
briefly met with Pelosi following the event.

"We let her know that the Armenian American community appreciates her
past support and requests her continued, strong leadership as we work
to ensure that the Armenian Genocide is unambiguously acknowledged
by both the Obama Administration and the US Congress," said Tavlian.

The Armenian National Committee – Western Region is the largest and
most influential Armenian American grassroots advocacy organization
in the Western United States. Working in coordination with a network
of offices, chapters, and supporters throughout the Western United
States and affiliated organizations around the country, the ANC-WR
promotes awareness of the Armenian American community on a broad
range of issues.
