GYUMRI, MAY 30, NOYAN TAPAN – ARMENIANS TODAY. The number of
monuments in Gyumri was added by one more. The bust of Khrimian
Hayrik was erected on May 29 in the yard of No41 school. This event,
according to pedagogues, is obliging for the school called after
the late Catholicos. Being a clergyman, Catholicos of All Armenians
Khrimian Hayrik strived for reviewing the national constitution,
completing the number of delegations of western Armenians living in
provinces. He struggled actively against the tsarist law on forced
taking church properties, criticized European approaches connected
with the Armenian cause. As school Director Artak Avetisian mentioned,
Khrimian Hayrik’s greatness is really exclusive, he was able to go
towards the people, casting off clergyman’s fetters, and to inspire
the people with patriotic spirit. “I wished to embody our, Armenians’
unbedning will and consience, and the result of my work will be the
one that the younger generation, pronouncing the name of His Holiness,
does it as an oath,” sculpture’s author Artur Hovhannisian mentioned
on the day of opening.

match in the framework of the qualification matches of the European Youth

match. Most probably, the UEFA will register a 3:0 technical defeat. In this
case our team will have to win with a bigger score in the response match.

Thoughts About Independence

THOUGHTS ABOUT INDEPENDENCE
Editorial

Yerkir.am
May 26, 2006

The independence is when a nation decides its fate on its own, when
it creates its history (the past and the future) all by itself in
line with its own national spirit and traditions. Independence means
no interference from other states, conducting domestic and foreign
policies on its own.

When analyzing the history of the Armenian people, we see that due
to various reasons, this nation has not been free for centuries to
build its own fate.

For centuries, the Armenian people lived under the dictate from
other nations.

Independence and freedom are not strangers to the Armenian people. But
the issue is how these notions are realized in real life. Gaining
independence does not automatically mean a nation became independent
and free immediately.

Russian author Alexander Solzhinitsin says there are two types of
freedom for a person (nation): inner freedom and external freedom. The
inner freedom is more important. A person should be free inside. Any
external freedom would not serve its purpose if a person or a nation
is not ready to accept it and materialize.

Turkey Laid Basis of Karabakh Conflict, Armenian Historian Considers

26.05.2006 18:43 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Presentation of monograph `Turkey and the Karabakh
Conflict in late 20th and early 21st century’ by candidate of
historical sciences Hayk Demoyan. According to the author, the work
leads t two major conclusions. Turkey has laid the basis of the
Karabakh conflict and the Ankara’s formal position on Karabakh makes
it a party to conflict and doesn’t give a right for mediation.

The monograph is dedicated to the analysis of Turkey’s official
position on the Nagorno Karabakh settlement. For the first time
materials about using of the Turkish and Azeri territories by the
international terrorism network, attraction of thousands of hirelings
from Chechnya and Afghanistan to the Karabakh conflict zone and role
of official structures in these processes.

`Armenian, Russia, English, French and Turkish sources were used for
the monograph. These documents proved that Turkey rendered military
and political assistance to Azerbaijan during the Karabakh war,
Demoyan said.

The book `Turkey and Karabakh Conflict’ was published in the Russian
language with the assistance of the Armenian Defense Ministry. In the
words of Armenian Deputy Defense Minister Artur Aghabekyan, Hayk
Demoyan’s monograph will become a handbook for the Armenian military,
reported Yerkir.

NK Pres on Montenegro referendum: `The precedent is important’

Regnum, Russia –

Nagorno Karabakh President on Montenegro referendum: `The precedent
is important’

If the international community is really ready to recognize
Montenegro and Kosovo’s independence, I believe it will be very
difficult to explain to them, why they are not ready to recognize
Nagorno Karabakh’s independence; Nagorno Karabakh President Arkady
Gukasyan, who attended the third Congress of Russia’s Armenians Union
on May 25, stated, speaking to a REGNUM correspondent. `I believe
that every question has its specificity, but, nevertheless, there are
some common positions, typical for all unrecognized states and such
conflicts – in this aspect, I believe that precedent is important,’
Gukasyan stressed, commenting on the referendum outcomes concerning
Montenegro independence.

At the same time, the NK president stressed that `Karabakh has much
more grounds – historical, legal, and geographic ones – to reckon on
independence.’

`Let us not forget that Nagorno Karabakh people defended their
independence with weapons in hands; they held out in war imposed on
it by Azerbaijan, and they are building their state now at the cost
of their best sons’ lives. I believe that we have every reason to
reckon on recognition of our independence by the international
community. In any case, I do not see any alternative for it. Nagorno
Karabakh is independent; Nagorno Karabakh will be independent, and it
does not depend on Azerbaijan’s will. This process may not be stopped
and I am sure, the international community will recognize Artsakh
sooner or later. The sooner it will do it, the more chances there
will be for prevailing of peace, order in region, and establishment
of mutual understanding between its peoples,’ Arkady Gukasyan
believes.

It is worth stressing that Montenegro may become independent as early
as in July 2006. According to outcomes of the May 21, 2006
referendum, 55.5% of inhabitants voted for Montenegro independence,
while in accordance with referendum’s conditions no less than 55% of
voters were to express some viewpoint. 86.3% of voters participated
in the referendum, which outcomes were recognized by the Serbian
authorities.

Iravunk Asks Prosecutor to Institute Criminal Action v. DM Brother

IRAVUNK NEWSPAPER ASKS PUBLIC PROSECUTOR’S OFFICE TO INSTITUTE
CRIMINAL ACTION AGAINST BROTHER OF DEFENCE MINISTER

Yerevan, May 25. ArmInfo. The Iravunk newspaper has asked the Public
Prosecutor’s Office, the Police and the National Security Service to
institute a criminal action against the brother of the Defence
Minister, MP Alexander Sargsyan.

The newspaper demands ensuring the safety of its correspondent Tagui
Tovmassyan, whom Sargsyan threatened in public a few days ago.

To remind, a few days ago Sargsyan attacked Tovmassyan in the corridor
of the Armenian parliament demanding the source of her information
otherwise she would face problems. However, asked if he threatens her,
Sargsyan said that he just warns. The correspondent proposed the
parliamentarian to refute the information in the newspaper or to apply
to the Court against her, In response, Sargsyan called the newspaper
nothingness and its correspondents complete nonentities, stating that
he will not “stoop to” write a refutation. In response to another
journalist’s attempt to support Tovmassyan, Sargsyan called him too
young to speak.

‘ORINATS YERKIR’ LEADER ACCUSED THE PRESIDENT FOR PRESSING UPON CERTAIN DEPUTIES

Yerevan, May 25. ArmInfo. The withdrawal of 10 ‘Orinats Yerkir’
deputies from the party was resulted by the atmosphere of fear and

structures, said yesterday leader of ‘Orinatas Yerkir’ Arthur
Bagdasarian during debates with ‘National Unity’ party leader Artashes
Geghamian on ‘Shant’ TV channel.

Boxing: Alexander Abraham, A Star In The Making

ALEXANDER ABRAHAM, A STAR IN THE MAKING
by Luca De Franco

The Sweet Science
May 24 2006

Alexander Abraham is one of the most promising light middleweights
fighting in Germany. He is under contract with Sauerland Event and
that gives him many opportunities to prove just how talented he is.

In two and a half years as a professional, Alexander built a record
of 16 wins (12 KOs) and 1 draw. He is the brother of IBF middleweight
champion Arthur Abraham (21-0 with 17 KOs) and that’s part of the
reason why he is already famous in two countries. As a matter of fact,
when they came back to Armenia after Arthur’s win over Kingsley Ikeke
(KO 5) for the IBF belt, the landing of the plane was broadcasted
live by Armenian television. In Germany, Alexander has fought in
almost every arena; the major ones being Berlin, Magdeburg, Erfurt,
Kempten, Hamburg and Mannheim. He also fought in Italy last year,
where he drew with Sylvain Gomis over 6 rounds. Alexander got revenge
on December 11, 2005 in Hamburg: a unanimous decision after 8 rounds. I
met Alexander Abraham at Sauerland Event’s training center located in
Kienbaum (one hour from Berlin, with another 30 minutes added because
of the traffic) and interviewed him with Media Director Heiko Mallwitz
serving as translator.

Alexander, when did you get started in boxing?

When I was a little boy, in Armenia. For 10 years, I fought among
amateurs in many European countries. I competed in the lightweight
and light welterweight divisions. When my parents moved to Germany,
I kept on fighting and winning here.

Who was your idol?

Mike Tyson. I liked him also because he let his fists do the talking
in the ring. That’s what a professional boxer should do. I don’t
approve the fighters who turn themselves into clowns.

Wouldn’t you do some showbiz if it meant fighting in America?

I would like to fight in America and I understand that showbiz is
important there, but I’m a fighter not an entertainer. I would just
participate to the press conference and pose for the photos.

You scored many KO wins. Do you consider yourself a power puncher?

I consider myself a technical boxer, but I can knockout everybody.

How did you decide to sign with Sauerland Event?

Three years ago, I was training with my brother in a boxing camp
in Kassel (near Frankfurt) and our mentor Luther Kanenberg called
Sauerland Event and told them: “I got two Armenian brothers: they
are talented, maybe you can use them as sparring partners.” Sauerland
Event invited us to their gym and asked us to spar with IBF/WBA super
middleweight champion Sven Ottke. They liked our style and offered
us a contract. Our trainer is the legendary Ulli Wegner.

Who is the world champion of a major organization that you would like
to fight?

WBO light middleweight champion Sergei Dzinziruk, his style is
perfect for me. I’m not saying that I would take him lightly: he is
an excellent boxer, can punch and he is physically very strong. In
fact, he also won the European title and has a perfect record of 31-0
(21 KO). He is from Ukraine, but he fights in Germany for another
organization.

HAGEN DOERING DISCUSSES THE ABRAHAM BROTHERS

Nobody can talk about Alexander and Arthur Abraham with more knowledge
that Sauerland Event Sports Director Hagen Doering.

Mr. Doering, were you surprised by the success of these guys?

No, because I brought them to the team. When Luther Kanenberg called
me, I told him to send the kids here in Berlin and asked our chief
trainer Ulli Wegner to keep an eye on them. I watched the training
sessions every day and after just one week I decided to sign them.

This happened in 2003. I believed so much in Arthur’s skills that I
put him against Hector Javier Velazco (who was 31-4-1) in 2005; maybe
it was too early for such a fight, but Arthur won by 5th round KO.

That’s why I was sure that he would defeat Kingsley Ikeke for the
vacant IBF middleweight title. Ironically, it also happened in 5
rounds. Arthur proved to be a fighting champion, successfully defending
the title against Shannan Taylor and Kofi Jantuah (on points, both
times). Three title matches in five months, all of them won, need no
further comments.

Do you think that Alexander can become world champion?

Yes, he can. He is as talented as his brother, but Alexander needs
more time to prepare for a major bout. When he is ready, he will
fight for the world title and win it.
