Mysteries of apostle’s final resting-place draw tourists to Issyk Kul

BISHKEK 19th May (TCA Editions) Well known as the natural gem of
Kyrgyzstan and the country’s top attraction, travelers have flocked
to Lake Issyk Kul for centuries to lounge on its shores. Today many
travelers to Issyk Kul are not just coming to relax but to explore
the mystery of whether the lake is the final resting-place of one of
the twelve apostles.

"The intact body of the Saint Apostle and evangelist Matthew, who
died in Syria, has been found on Kyrgyz soil," said Vladamir the
Archbishop of the Russian Orthodox Church of Bishkek and Central
Asia.

In truth, there is no proof that Matthew’s body was uncovered at
Issyk-Kul, but there is at least one piece of evidence that Matthew
may have been buried on the shores of the lake and this has inspired
a continuing search for his grave.

In 1857 Russian explorer Semenov-Tian-Shansky came into possession of
a Catalan Map dating back to 1357. The map depicted a building
crowned with a figure of Christ and the inscription "A place named
Issyk Kul Lake, where a monastery of the Nestorian Christians (an
Armenian Christian group) is situated. It is said that in this
monastery the body of St. Matthew, an Apostle and Evangelist, was
buried."

Since the discovery of the map and the spread of the legend, locals,
tourists and archaeologists have been searching for the site.

If you follow the tourists, the burial spot is likely the cavern of
Schema-Monk Isikhiy in Kurmenty Bay between the villages of Svetly
Mys and Tiup. The area has numerous caves but, many people believe
one cave that forms a long neck and is washed by the waves of
Issyk-Kul on three sides is the monastery from the Catalan map.
Archaeologist Alexander Kamyshev is one of those believers. In 2005
Kamishev led a team from the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic Univeristy to the
cave and they determined the cave’s design was consistent with that
of a medieval Armenian monasteries.

"The two-storey complex of cells and halls, with 65-cm wide corridors
and air holes, is unlikely to have been dug out by one man alone. The
arches must have been built by an ancient architect."

Kyrgyz archaeologist Vladimir Ploskikh is convinced the real
monastery lies on a hill on the Zayachem Peninsula in the Tyoopsi
region of Issyk Kul. He participated in an expedition to the area
last year which recovered numerous items from an opening on a hill.
He said the discovery of these items indicate that this spot was the
monastery on the Catalan map.

"According to the treasures found, which included small bronze
objects and crosses, the historian Alexander Kamishevim and I
concluded that we had at last found the mythical monastery of the
Armenian brotherhood marked on the Spanish map, which contained the
relics," said Ploskikh.

Of course proving such a tale is not that simple. Various legends
also tell of Christians burying holy relics in the area. According to
one story Christians fleeing Syria in the 2nd and 3rd centuries
brought relics to Issyk Kul while another tells of Christian pilgrims
burying treasures in a cave in the area in 1218.

It is likely the only real truth is that the mystery of Matthew’s
final resting spot will continue to attract visitors to Issyk Kul and
exaggerated stories and legends will continue.

Orinats Yerkir Party (OYP) plans to appeal the results of the
parliamentary elections in Armenia in Courts of First Instance and the
Constitutional Court, and in case of necessity – in the European Court
of Human Rights, Artur Baghdasarian said at a press conference today.

According to him, "the results of the elections were influenced by
mass bribery of electors, carried out both on the eve of the voting
and on the day of elections outside the polling stations." Besides,
Artur Baghdasarian argues that forged passports were used during
the elections.

"We plan to press for a recount of votes in over 400 polling stations,
where, according to the official data, our party did not receive a
single vote, whereas in neighboring polling stations Orinats Yerkir
gained tens of votes," Artur Baghdasarian stated.

He welcomed the fact that the opposition parties in total gained
450 thousand votes. "This means that the opposition should get united
before the next presidential elections, and set out by a single front,"
leader of OYP stated.

ANCA Eastern Region Hosts Leadership Briefing Featuring Harut Sassou

ANCA EASTERN REGION HOSTS LEADERSHIP BRIEFING FEATURING HARUT SASSOUNIAN

Twenty Armenian community leaders, representing a dozen organizations,
gathered in New York on May 9, as noted activist and commentator Harut
Sassounian briefed them on the recent debacle involving the Los Angeles
Times and its mishandling of the Armenian Genocide issue. The briefing
was organized by the Armenian National Committee of America-Eastern
US and was hosted by Mr. Robert Setrakian.

Mr. Sassounian addressed the controversy created by The Times Managing
Editor Douglas Frantz who blocked the publication of an article on
the Armenian Genocide by columnist Mark Arax last month. Frantz
alleged that Arax had a bias on this issue presumably due to his
ethnic background. The Armenian-American reporter is currently in
the process of filing a discrimination lawsuit against The Times. In
recent years, Frantz was stationed in Istanbul representing first
the New York Times and then the Los Angeles Times.

Sassounian reported that he has already met with the publisher and
editor of the newspaper demanding Frantz’s dismissal. Sassounian
reminded the gathering that The Times is on record affirming the
veracity of the Genocide, and that Frantz’s actions contradict the
newspaper’s own position on this issue. At this stage, Sassounian
stated, the community must accept nothing less than the firing of
Frantz for his complicity in Turkey’s denialist campaign – something
that Sassounian demonstrated by presenting abundant evidence. He then
encouraged attendees to push their respective organizations to show
more activism in pursuing this matter.

One of the most prominent political commentators in Armenian affairs,
Harut Sassounian is the long-time publisher of the California Courier,
President of the United Armenian Fund, and Senior Vice-President of
the Los Angeles-based Lincy Foundation.

"We’re delighted to make use of Harut Sassounian’s presence in New
York to highlight the importance of this issue," said Karine Birazian,
ANC-ER Executive Director.

"In the coming months, the ANC will continue to hold such briefings
periodically, in order to better inform and mobilize our community
leadership on issues they need to be aware of," Birazian said.

Turkish PM Says He Favours Changing Free Speech Law

TURKISH PM SAYS HE FAVOURS CHANGING FREE SPEECH LAW

Agence France Presse — English
May 15, 2007 Tuesday 3:19 PM GMT

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday he favoured
amending a widely criticised law used to prosecute dozens of
intellectuals, but did not say when his government would do so.

"We are not resisting (changes) to Article 301. If we get a reasonable
proposal, we can work on it," Erdogan told the annual assembly of
media watchdog International Press Institute (IPI) in Istanbul.

Article 301 calls for jail terms of between six months and three years
for "denigrating Turkishness," the Republic and state institutions such
as the government, parliament, the judiciary and the security forces,
and requires an increased penalty if the crime is committed abroad.

Dozens of intellectuals, among them 2006 Nobel literature laureate
Orhan Pamuk, have been charged under the article, mostly for contesting
the official line on the massacres of Armenians under the Ottoman
Empire.

The law has also been blamed for fueling nationalist hatred towards
ethnic Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, who was convicted under the
article and was gunned down in January by a suspected ultra-nationalist
after receiving threats.

The European Union, which Turkey is seeking to join, has slammed the
article on many occasions as a threat to freedom of speech and has
urged Ankara to either amend or scrap it.

In a resolution adopted Monday at its general assembly, the IPI urged
Turkey to revise Article 301 and purge its penal code of "all articles
used to restrict journalists’ ability to report freely and express
their opinion."

"REGISTERED VIOLATIONS WERE NOT OF MASS NATURE AND COULD NOT HAVE CONSIDERABLE INFLUENCE ON THE RESULTS OF ELECTIONS", "IT’S YOUR CHOICE" ORGANIZATION DECLARED

Mediamax News Agency, Armenia –
May 14 2007

Yerevan, May 14. /Mediamax/. The parliamentary elections of May 12 in
Armenia became "a step forward, as compared to the elections of 2003",
the Chairman of "It’s Your Choice" NGO Harutiun Hambardzumian stated
in Yerevan today.

Mediamax reports that over 4 thousand local observers of "It’s Your
Choice" NGO realized monitoring of the pre-election campaign and
the voting process. The project was funded by the U.S Agency for
International Development (USAID).

"On the day of voting, the election process and the vote-count in
the polling stations proceeded in a relatively peaceful and steady
atmosphere, however, there were violations and neglects registered
outside the polling stations", the preliminary statement of the
organization notes.

The point, in particular, is the bribes of electors, agitation on the
day of elections from the part of pro-authority parties, discrimination
of observers’ rights, cases of mass conveyance of the electors to
the polling stations. The statement also notes cases of ballot-box
stuffing in several polling stations in Yerevan and regions of Armenia.

Harutiun Hambardzumian stated that the registered cases are hard to
prove from the juridical point of view; however, they cast a shadow
on the positive shifts obtained.

He also noted that "the registered violations were not of mass
nature and could not have considerable influence on the result of
elections".

ARMENIA REGISTERS PROGRESS IN MEETING COMMITMENTS

fair and transparent,’ a reporter asked Tone Tinsgord,
vice chair of OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. Tinsgord
said the international observers assessed the
elections exclusively in the context of Armenia’s
commitments to OSCE and Council of Europe. The chair
said they did not have a task to use the
abovementioned terminology.

Speaking about the quality of elections in terms of
meeting the commitments, the international observers
said Armenia has registered `great progress.’ The
international observers repeatedly stated that during
