Peacekeepers ensured the safety of more than 60 pilgrims during a visit to the Amaras monastery complex

The servicemen of the Russian peacekeeping contingent ensured the safety of more than 60 pilgrims during a visit to the Amaras monastery complex near the line of demarcation of the parties in Artsakh, the Russian defense ministry reported. 

“The personnel of the Russian peacekeeping contingent performs the task of ensuring the safety of pilgrims at the Amaras complex. Pilgrims arrive both centralized as part of a column, and by private vehicles,” said Viktor Kulikov, a representative of the Russian peacekeeping contingent.

Peacemakers ensure the safety of pilgrims while traveling and visiting the Amaras monastery complex and during church services.

“We came from Armenia, we really wanted to come, but there were problems with fear and the opportunity to come, but thanks to the peacekeepers that we were able to calmly come here. We calmly drove all the way, it was just morally difficult for us, but we see that peacekeepers are fulfilling their tasks and we are calm about it. They are very generous and even asked about our well-being in Armenian. Thank them for this, ” said pilgrim Gayane Mkhitoryan.

“Everything is fine with security now, with the presence of peacekeepers, they are here every major service. The services are held in peace. Seeing the Russian flags, we feel free, we feel friendship and, most importantly, security, ” said the deacon of the Amaras monastery, Vilen Grigoryan.

Russian peacekeepers escorted pilgrims from Stepanakert to the Martuni district who attended a service at the monastery of the Armenian Apostolic Church, the source said.

British Military Advisory Training Team works with Armenian peacekeers

Yerevan /Mediamax/. As part of the UK-Armenia defense cooperation activities, a month-long Junior Command and Leadership course kicked off this week.

“Four members from the British Military Advisory Training Team have arrived in Armenia to deliver the course. They will be working with the Armenian Peacekeeping servicepersons to improve their leadership skills and prepare them for planning and conducting similar training courses within their own units”, UK Embassy informed.

Prominent Nigerian journalist Dele Olojede joins the Aurora Prize Selection Committee

The Aurora Humanitarian Initiative is glad to announce that prominent Nigerian journalist Dele Olojede, the first African-born person to win a Pulitzer Prize, has joined the Selection Committee of the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity. As the press service at IDeA Foundation reported, in this new capacity, he will assist Nobel Laureates, former presidents, prominent political figures, highly respected humanitarians and well-known human rights activists dedicated to recognizing modern-day heroes and their exceptional impact. Every year, members of the Selection Committee review a shortlist of candidates and select the Aurora Humanitarians to later name one of them the Aurora Prize Laureate.

60-year-old Dele Olojede is a writer, editor, and publisher whose career in journalism spans nearly four decades and took him to more than 100 countries. He was the founder and publisher of NEXT, a groundbreaking investigative newspaper in Lagos, Nigeria, that circulated in the 2000s.

In 2005, Dele became the first African-born winner of the Pulitzer Prize for his reporting on the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide. He is also a public speaker, particularly on what constitutes the good society and how we might hope to achieve it, preferably in our lifetimes.

“We are delighted that Dele Olojede has made the decision to join this Committee. For decades, he has been the voice of the underserved and overlooked communities in distress, and we are very pleased to have him onboard and appreciative of his invaluable input and expertise. I’m positive that his contribution to the work of the Aurora Prize Selection Committee will greatly benefit the humanitarian cause we all serve,” said Lord Ara Darzi, Chair of the Aurora Prize Selection Committee.

Dele Olojede is the founder and host of the annual Africa in the World festival, which brings together provocative thinkers from around the world in the Cape winelands of South Africa to discuss some of the largest challenges and opportunities facing Africa. Besides this, he is a fellow of the Aspen Global Leadership Network, and a moderator of Aspen leadership seminars. Dele Olojede serves on the global advisory board of Luminate, the board of EARTH University in Costa Rica and various other organizations and is a Distinguished Alumnus of Columbia University.

“I’m very honored and excited about this new challenge in my career. I think the Aurora Prize is extremely important as it raises awareness of the plight of those who need our immediate help and of the heroic actions of people who put themselves at risk to help them. As a journalist, I believe visibility and representation matter, so I’m honored to have this opportunity to ensure both for those doing the heroic work of preserving and improving human life in our time, and across the globe,” said Dele Olojede.

The 2021 Aurora Prize Ceremony and accompanying events will take place in Venice, Italy, on October 8-10, 2021. There will be ample opportunities for the guests and participants, including members of the Aurora Prize Selection Committee, Aurora Humanitarians, and other representatives of Aurora’s community, to explore the rich legacy of this location. In the meantime, nominations are still open for the 2022 Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity. Until October 31, 2021, any person can submit a nomination for the candidates they believe have overcome great personal challenges to help others.

 

Mountain resort to be created in Armenia’s Aparan

The Armenian government has approved the investment program presented by “Myler Mountain Resort” CJSC, which will be implemented in the territory of Aparan community of Aragatsotn region.

The company plans to establish a multifunctional mountain complex. The program is aimed at ensuring the diversity and development of tourism in the country, as well as the establishment of a healthy lifestyle among the population, in line with the economic development strategy adopted by the Government of the Republic of Armenia.

About 250 workers will be involved in the construction of the mountain complex, and after the implementation of the program, about 1,500 main jobs will be created, with an average salary of 180,000 AMD.

The complex under construction will have the capacity to serve 6,000 customers per day. As a result, more than 1.2 billion drams in taxes will be paid to the state budget.

In the later stages of the project implementation, it is planned to expand the complex to include other services. The company is going to invest about 15 billion drams only for the construction of a ropeway, which will become the first, most important guarantee for the creation of a new tourist city around it. By attracting new investors, the company plans to invest up to 15 billion drams in the hotel sector.

There are currently two recreation areas in Armenia (in Jermuk and Tsakhkadzor communities), which offer mountain, in particular, skiing entertainment. Most of the tourists in these areas are Russian citizens, followed by visitors from Iran.

Armenian caretaker health minister presents steps to be taken to increase COVID-19 vaccinations

YEREVAN, JULY 29, ARMENPRESS. Caretaker minister of healthcare of Armenia Anahit Avanesyan has presented the upcoming actions aimed at increasing the number of people who get vaccinated against COVID-19.

She told reporters after the Cabinet meeting that she has always stated that the vaccination results are not so satisfactory. “But we are satisfied with the constantly growing number of those who seek to get vaccinated. I hope that with the arrival of new batches of vaccines this rate will grow, and we will have a chance to reach our targets on the right time, by the end of the year”, she added.

As for the packages which are being prepared for applying some restrictions connected with the virus, Avanesyan said they propose a COVID-19 test requirement from time to time in public services field, especially in those workplaces where there are broad contacts and the citizens are representatives of risky groups.

Armenia, Azerbaijan accuse each other of breaking ceasefire

TEHRAN, Aug. 01 (MNA) – As the tensions between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Armenia escalates, the Azeri Ministry of Defense announced the mortar attack of the Yerevan Army on its positions in Nakhchivan.

The Azerbaijani defense ministry said in a statement that at approximately 03:45 (local time) on 1 August, Armenian Armed Forces fired from their positions near the village of “Arazdin” in the “Vedi” region at the positions of the Army of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the village of Hyderabad located at the Sadarak region of the Nakhchivan autonomous republic.

The Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Azerbaijan reported that the mortar attacks on Azeri positions apparently did not inflict any casualties.

The statement added that the Azeri side responded to the mortar shells by directly targeting the Armenian positions and that after the retaliatory attack by Azerbaijani forces, the situation was calm in the region.

The new round of the escalation comes a week after the Ministry of Defense of Armenia reported that the Armed Forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan fired at the Armenian army positions near the village of Arazdin in the Ararat region of Armenia, and Armenia retaliated.

Meanwhile, the Armenian defense ministry has said today in a statement that Azerbaijani units opened fire from sniper rifles and small arms of various caliber at Armenian positions located in the Yeraskh area.

Armenian armed forces said that there were no casualties from the Armenian side.

Sports: Tokyo-2020: Armenian Australian coach Brian Goorjian heading towards Olympic medal with men’s basketball team

Armenian-Australian coach Brian Goorjian is heading towards securing a medal at Tokyo 2020 Olympics with the Australian ‘Boomers’ Men’s basketball team, Armenia Media – Armenian News from Australia reports.

The Boomers, coached by American-born Armenian-Australian Brian Goorjian have continued their impressive run in the men’s competition, beating Germany 89-76 to secure their 3rd win in the group stage and holding onto top spot in their group.

Goorjian played for the Melbourne Tigers for 8 years before coaching many successful teams in the National Basketball League (NBL).

He is the most successful coach in Australian basketball and his career has been called the most successful in NBL history by Basketball Australia.

He is now leading the Australian men’s team again with the hope of securing their first ever medal at an Olympic Games.

Goorjian has also played for local Armenian-Australian team Homenetmen Arax and has been a regular at the Homenetmen Navasartian Games, especially when held in Melbourne.

Russia reports over 23,800 daily COVID-19 cases

YEREVAN, JULY 23, ARMENPRESS. Russia confirmed 23,811 COVID-19 cases over the past day, bringing the total case tally to 6,078,522, TASS reports citing the anti-coronavirus crisis center.

The number of coronavirus cases in Russia grew by 0.39% in relative terms.

Moscow confirmed 3,425 COVID-19 cases over the past day. 

Currently, 476,222 people are undergoing treatment in Russia.

The number of COVID-19 fatalities in Russia over the past 24 hours has increased by 795 compared to 796 the day before. In all, 152,296 patients died of the infection.

Russia’s coronavirus recoveries grew by 22,547 in the past 24 hours. As many as 5,450,004 people have recovered by now.

Armenia MOD: Azerbaijani army opens fire at Armenian military posts in Yeraskh, intensive firing follows

This evening, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces made more provocations. In particular, starting from 6:40pm the Azerbaijani units opened fire at Armenian military posts located in the Yeraskh sector of the Armenia-Azerbaijan border with firearms of various calibers, after which there was intensive firing. There are no victims and injured from the Armenian side.

The Ministry of Defense of Armenia strictly condemns the regular provocation of the Azerbaijani side and warns that the Armenian side will give a coarse response to any similar operation. The military and political leadership of Azerbaijan will fully responsible for escalation of the situation.
