BEIRUT, JUNE 9, NOYAN TAPAN – ARMENIANS TODAY. Parliamentary elections
were held in Lebanon on June 7, which ended by the victory of the
leading bloc of the country March 14. According to the preliminary
data, pro-western March 14 bloc took 70 of 128 seats of Lebanese
parliament keeping the majority.

According to the Masis weekly, the March 8 movement, which led the
pro-Iranian and pro-Syrian Hisb Alah party, was defeated.

Armenian parties running for the elections were also divided into
these two fronts. The Social-Democratic Hnchakian and Ramkavar
Azatakan parties ran for the elections as a member of March 14,
and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation as a member of March 8.

The March 14 forces took all five seats of the capital of Lebanon
Beirut’s first electoral district. In this electoral district in

LPG Filling Stations In Armenia To Be Transferred To Common Taxation

LPG FILLING STATIONS IN ARMENIA TO BE TRANSFERRED TO COMMON TAXATION FIELD

ArmInfo. Today, Parliament of Armenia introduced alterations and
amendments to the Law ‘On Fixed Payments’ in the first reading.

As one of the document authors, MP Robert Tovmasyan said, the draft law
purposes to settle the problems related to LPG filling stations. So,
according to the current law, the owners of LPG filling stations pay
1,5 mln drams from every ‘pistol’ in the form of fixed payments to
the state budget.

This circumstance causes non-interest of LPG filling stations’ owners
in installation of new ‘pistols’, that leads to creation of queues. The
draft law offers to transfer the gas filling stations to the common
taxation field, that will allow to increase the budget deductions,
on one hand, and avoid queues- on the other.

At present, there are over 200 LPG filling stations in Armenia. To
note, the government of Armenia argued against adoption of the document
as it is.

TURKISH CONSULATE OFFICIAL DENIES GENOCIDE AT CONFERENCE ON GENOCIDE DENIAL IN NORWAY

OSLO, Norway (Bianet)-At a panel discussion on the limits of laws on
Holocaust Denial at the International Freedom of Expression eXchange
Conference in Oslo, Norway on Friday, a Turkish consulate official
interrupted a discussion on the denial of the Armenian Genocide,
claiming that Armenians were brutally murdered and deported from
their homeland for treason.

A person describing themselves as an official at the Turkish consulate
in Norway, objected to the use of the word "genocide" used by speakers
to describe both what happened to Jews in the Third Reich and what
happened to Armenians in the Ottoman Empire in 1915.

"They were not deported because they were Armenians or because
of their race, but because they collaborated with the enemy," the
official claimed.

But thousands of pages of official government archives from the
United States, Russia, France, Germany, and even Turkey, point to
the indisputable fact that in 1915 the Ottoman Turkish government
set out to annihilate the indigenous Armenian population inhabiting
the lands under its dominion not for collusion, but for being Armenian.

Between 1915-1923, the government executed a systematic campaign to
exterminate the Armenian people and remove them from their historic
homeland. The Armenian Genocide, recognized as the first genocide of
the 20th century by historians the world over, resulted in the death of
an estimated 1.5 million Armenians and the loss of millions of dollars
in property and land now under occupation by the Republic of Turkey.

But talking about this history is a crime in Turkey. According to
Turkish publisher Ragip Zarakolu, who spoke at the panel, Articles
301 and 305 of the Turkish Penal Code prevent people from discussing
the Armenian genocide. Zarakolu, the owner of Belge Publications,
has himself been convicted under Article 301 for "denigrating the
Turkish state or state organs" and for "inciting hatred and hostility."

Zarakolu said that these "laws encourage denial."

But the consulate official disagreed, arguing that Article 301 and
other such laws were designed to "protect the unity of their territory
and security."

At 5:40 pm, the Kapan fire brigade received word that two young boys
had been swept away in the Voghj River. Minutes later, emergency
services Director Davit Asatryan and a team of rescue personnel
arrived on the scene.

14 year-old Garnik Avetisyan was fishing along the river bank when
he slipped and fell in. Diving into the swollen river to save him was
his friend, 15 year-old Albert. The waters swept both boys down river.

After being plucked from the icy waters, Garnik was rushed to the
Kapan mediacl center for first aid. The staff says that his present
condition is stable. The boy, probably still traumatized by the
incident, didn’t wish to speak to Hetq about the incident.

His friend Albert was treated on site and later sent home. He expressed
a desire to visit Garnik in hospital.

Martoun, Garnik’s father, praised the courageous actions of the rescue
team. Team leader Volodya Gabrielyan stated that, "When you arrive at
an accident scene you stop thinking about your personal safety. You
want to rescue those in peril at any cost."

According to our information, a 40 year-old fell into the same stretch
or river on June 3 and was lucikly dragged to shore.
