DO YOU KNOW MY NAME? DARING ARMENIAN WOMEN INAUGURAL LAUNCH

BOSTON, MA, – Do You Know My Name?” is the first of a series of video montages presented by the Daring Armenian Women (DAW) Project, showcasing Armenian women from all over the world, who are often overlooked, honoring their courage, intelligence, talent, and resilience. The first montage,  produced in cooperation with Yerevan-based Bars Media Studio, is a tribute to women from history. The DAW project takes a modest step towards bringing them into the present, giving them voice, place, and agency. On October 25 the montage will be launched on the Daring Armenian Women social media sites, along with a panel discussion at the American University of Armenia in Yerevan, Armenia.

The opening frame lingers on an image of the Mayr Hayastan (Mother Armenia) statue asking the question, “Do you know my name?” and then segues to photos of 27 daring Armenian women featured in the montage, whose legacies impacted the social, political, economic, and cultural life of our collective history all over the world. As part of the DAW curation team, Melissa Bilal, Lerna Ekmekcioglu, Audrey Kalajian (creator), Susan Pattie, and Judith Saryan, have researched and identified women’s contributions in fields as diverse as sacred music, boxing, and medicine.  This collaborative project is a first step towards expanding our understanding of Armenian women’s place in the history of arts, music, literature, science, sports, politics, and other fields of life, and generating awareness about the importance of preserving women’s history, especially for the future generations.

These women and many others to date, are a reminder that gender justice remains a significant challenge, one that is hindering collective well-being.  Today, women are not only finding their voices, but their voices are also being heard.  A powerful example of this were the women featured on the frontlines and in global news articles about Armenia’s recent Velvet Revolution. While project is universal with subtitles in English, the next phase includes a translation into Eastern Armenian.

DAW social media presence creates a space to learn more about these and other Armenian women and to generate contemporary discussions within the Armenian communities around the world inviting them to nominate other DAW women for future themed montages.

The launch event on October 25 will take place at the American University of Armenia (AUA), with the video screening and panel discussion spearheaded by Dr. Melissa Bilal, Assistant Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences. “Daring Armenian Women: Anonymous No More is the title and the panelists include:  Anna Nikoghosyan, Arpine Haroyan, Gayane Aghabalyan, Elmira Ayvazyan, and Sona Margaryan. Bilal highlights, “the aim of this project is to challenge and disrupt the traditional anonymity of Armenian women in public space and to make their names and lives known in the present.”

Please note, DAW social media audience is welcome to nominate past or present women and suggest themes on the DAW Facebook page.

For additional information about the women featured in the montage, visit or follow Daring Armenian Women on Facebook, Instagram @DaringArmenianWomen and Twitter @DaringArmWomen. The Armenian church marks the Feast of the Holy Translators

The Armenian Apostolic Church marks to day the Feast of the Holy Translators. For the Armenian people the Feast of the Holy Translators is one of the most favorite and beloved national-ecclesiastical feasts. As Qahana.am reports, nearly two hundred disciples of St. Mesrob Mashtots and St. Sahak are known by the general group name “Holy Translators”. The disciples of the above mentioned group of Holy Translators are known as “Junior Translators”.

Celebrating this feast, the Armenian Apostolic Church pays tribute of respect to the bright memory of St. Mesrob Mashtots, Yeghishe, Moses of Khoronk, philosoppher Davit Anhaght, whose sacred work and mission later has been continued on by St. Gregory of Narek and St. Nerses the Gracious. The word “Translator” means “Interpreter”. Comprehending and precisely understanding the demands of that period, the Holy Translators initiated the sacred work of creating the Armenian alphabet and literature. By the strength of their faith they dispersed the darkness and warmed the human souls. Thanks to the Holy Translators the Holy Bible was translated into Armenian and the Armenian people obtained the possibility to read the Holy Book in the native language.

By means of their activity the Holy Translators contributed to the spiritual-cultural awakening of Armenia. After the translation of the Holy Bible, many books of Church Father were translated into Armenian, and thanks to this fact many translations, the original copies of which haven’t been preserved, presently exist only in the translated variant and thus the translations have obtained the value of the original.

ANCC Strongly Condemns
Turkey’s Military Attack on Syria

OTTAWA – The Armenian National Committee of Canada
strongly condemns Turkey’s military attack on Syria and calls on the
international community to restrain Turkey from making an already dire
situation immeasurably worse.

Yesterday, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, the
Hon. Chrystia Freeland made the government’s position clear in a mid-day tweet,
saying “Canada firmly condemns Turkey’s military incursion into Syria today…We
call for the protection of civilians and on all parties to the respect their obligations
under international law…”

Commenting on the issue, ANCC co-president Hrag
Tarakdjian said “We welcome Minister Freeland’s and Canada’s firm position on
the issue, but we ask them to remain vigilant and be ready to act, because
Turkey simply cannot be trusted and civilians could very well pay the price of
this senseless aggression”

Earlier, the ANCC sent a letter to Minister Freeland
and the US Chargé d’Affaires in Ottawa, Mr. Richard Mills, expressing its
profound concern, regarding the sudden withdrawal of US troops from Syria.

In the letter, ANCC co-presidents, Hrag Tarakdjian and
Shahen Mirakian said “
At a time of uncertainty and
danger, such an ill-considered decision by the US President is a clear
abandonment of America’s key allies in the region and a reckless desertion of
the ethnoreligious minorities, including Armenians, that have called Syria home
for centuries”

Later reports indicated that Turkish airstrikes had already hit civilian
targets and a number of casualties were reported. The towns of Tel-Abyad and
Qamishly – where Armenian and Assyrian minorities live alongside the local
Kurdish majority – were amongst the towns that were hit heavily by Turkish
forces. In the Aftermath of the Armenian Genocide, Qamishly was one of the
first settlements established by the survivors of the Armenian and Assyrian
Genocides.

“While Turkey might assure that civilians will not be targeted, the reality on the
ground suggest otherwise” said Shahen Mirakian.

“Erdogan simply cannot be trusted and the international community must act”
he added.

“We urge you to remain vigilant and work alongside our international
partners to raise this important matter and prevent what will inevitably lead
to bloodshed and destruction” concluded the letter to Minister Freeland.

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 4, ARMENPRESS. The Foreign Ministry of Artsakh welcomes the position of Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović Burić announced during the autumn session of the PACE about the protection and promotion of human rights of all the citizens in the CoE zone, irrespective of political or legal status of the countries they live in.

”We welcome the position of Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović Burić on the importance of protecting and promoting the rights of all citizens living in the territory of the Council of Europe, regardless of the political or legal status of their states, which she voiced at the autumn session of the Parliamentary Assembly.

Committed to democratic values and recognizing the significant achievements of the international community in the protection of human rights, the fundamental freedoms and the rule of law, Artsakh has unilaterally joined a number of international Conventions since 1992, including the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.

We are convinced that the guarantee of respect for the rights and freedoms of each person, based on justice and equality, is the foundation of stability, development and sustainable peace. In this regard, we consider important the intention of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe to find ways to engage the organization’s mechanisms in the protection of the rights and freedoms of people living in the unresolved conflict zones through contacts with all the parties involved. Any attempts to politicize the issues related to human rights should be strictly suppressed.

The authorities of the Republic of Artsakh have repeatedly stated their readiness to cooperate with international specialized organizations, including with the Council of Europe, with the aim of the successive strengthening of the national mechanisms of protection of the universal and inalienable rights and freedoms of their citizens, including within the framework of their international obligations”, ARMENPRESS reports spokesperson of the foreign ministry of Artsakh Ani Sargsyan said in her comment.

Turkey meddles in Armenian Patriarch election, changes conditions

PanArmenian, Armenia
Sept 24 2019

PanARMENIAN.Net – Ahead of the election of the 85th Patriarch of the Armenian Patriarchate of Turkey, the Ministry of Interior has laid down a condition that the candidates must be from Turkey. An HDP MP of Armenian descent, Garo Paylan has described the movie as “an attempt to usurp the right to be elected,” bianet reports.

The Ministry has issued a directive to the Patriarchate and the Enterprising Council who prepare to elect the 85th Patriarch, stipulating the condition of “being part of the class of bishops of the Armenian Patriarchate of İstanbul” to be elected.

There are only two high cleric candidates who meet these requirements.

Paylan said there have been many patriarchal elections in Turkey and all of them were attended by Armenian clerics from around the world.

“The Armenian Patriarchate has the right to appeal the decision. In fact, when Mesrob Mutafyan was being elected 20 years ago there was a similar attempt but the enterprising committee of the time objected to the decision and the situation was corrected,” the lawmaker said.

“Now the same objection must be made and this restriction must be removed by the ministry officials. Otherwise, it cannot be called an election.

Mutafyan, the late Patriarch, was elected as top religious leader of the Armenian community in Turkey in 1998.

Since 2008, Mutafyan suffered from health issues that prevented him to fulfill his duties. He died in March 2019.

Bishop Sahak Mashalian was recently elected a patriarchal locum tenens of the Armenian Patriarchate of Istanbul.

Mashalian is reportedly one of the candidates, including Archbishop Aram Ateshyan, the vicar, to succeed Mutafyan.

“This harmony is classified among our everyday priorities and we will continue carrying out corresponding works with our colleagues,” Sahakyan said.

As to disagreements, Artsakh president said the disagreements should not be qualified as tragedy.

“Naturally we have our viewpoints and in the issues where the viewpoints do not coincide I ascribe them to our working relations,” he said.

Armenia denies being told by US to withdraw humanitarian mission from Syria

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 3, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian foreign ministry has denied a media report purporting that the United States Government has demanded the Armenian Government to withdraw its team of de-miners and medics from Syria.

Currently there are a few dozen of de-miners and medics from the Armenian Center for Humanitarian Demining & Expertise deployed in Syria on a humanitarian mission.

“We have already denied this information many times. Currently an attempt is being made to re-circulate with new made-up details – which are also false – information which has already been denied by a governmental agency, and to develop a fake news made up from several layers. We find the ungrounded manipulations based on narrow personal interests of issues relating to the security of the Armenian community of Syria and the assistance provided to it to be inadmissible. Let me add off topic that ministries working in the security sector and their executives are in constant consultation over different issues, something the executives of these ministries themselves have numerously noted,” foreign ministry spokesperson Anna Naghdalyan said in response to an inquiry from Aysor, an online Armenian newspaper.
