ANCA Crescenta Valley Sponsors Staging of ‘A Journey of Angels’

“A Journey of Angels”

LA CAÑADA, Calif.,—Sponsored by the Armenian National Committee of America Greater Crescenta Valley Chapter, the musical performance “A Journey of Angels,” based on Dr. Kay Mouradian’s genocide memoir “My Mother’s Voice,” will take place at La Canada’s Lanterman Auditorium. The performance will be staged on Friday, September 20 at 8 p.m., at 4491 Cornishon Ave, La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011. It is produced by an American creative team composed of book writer Brent Beerman, composer and lyricist Kathi Chaplar, and director Kay Cole.

The memoir tells a story of horrors experienced by a 14-year-old Armenian girl during the Armenian Genocide of 1915. By telling one family’s story about the tragedy of the Armenian nation, the author emphasizes that the tragedies of the past must never be forgotten for the sake of the future.

“Flora’s story is a symbol of hope. We all find hope in the struggle against all oppression and intolerance,” said book-writer Brent Beerman. “Her story, however, is more than a historical marker; it chronicles the life and journey of one Armenian town, focusing on one family, chronicling the persistence of one girl’s dream and the face of unspeakable atrocities. If we are to overcome future despots, then we must never forget what happened to Flora and to the Armenian people through the horror of genocide.”

Imagine the international outcry if India were to hold a large athletic competition with the Indian diaspora in the Kashmir province. Well, a similar scenario recently unfolded in the volatile South Caucuses with the Pan-Armenian Games kicking off in the disputed lands of Nagorno Karabakh, and hasn’t been much global condemnation. Why not?

Economics may be a factor. Nagorno Karabakh lies within the internationally recognized boundaries of the State of Azerbaijan, a resource-rich country in the Caspian basin. Neighboring Armenia, by contrast, is a landlocked economy claiming war-torn regions like Nagorno Karabakh, home to four successive conflicts since 1988. Nagorno Karabakh and the seven surrounding districts where many Armenians live constitute the self-proclaimed “Republic of Artsakh”.

Karabakh Armenians, with the help of Republic of Armenia forces and, reportedly, Russian armed forces, have successfully captured up to 20 percent of the territory within Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized borders. Since signing a ceasefire agreement, the parties have tried to resolve the conflict peacefully with the help of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Minks Group co-chaired by the United States, Russia and France. No substantial progress has been made. In fact, hostilities resumed in 2008 and 2016, nearly bringing the sides to an all-out-war.

Hosting the Pan-Armenian Games in the disputed Nagorno Karabakh allows the Armenian leadership to declare victory in this historical, ethnic and geographic conflict. This self-declared victory could come with a price—a more muscular military posture from Azerbaijan. Politicizing sports discredits the Pan-Armenian Games as propaganda catered to Armenians at the expense of the athletes competing and progress in peace talks.

Armenia, like many other countries with large diasporas, has invested in significant projects to unify Armenians around the world. Modeled after the modern Olympics, the Since 1999, every two years, the Pan-Armenian Games seek to bring ethnic Armenian athletes in the diaspora to Armenia to generate interest in their homeland and boost tourism. According to Armenian media, the number of Armenian athletes from abroad have steadily grown over the past two decades. According to estimates, 5,300 athletes from 161 countries participated in the Games recently held August 6-17.

This year, the competition for land was staged as a main event. For the first time, the opening of the Games is being held in unrecognized Nagorno Karabakh. Armenia’s new Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, who came to power last year on the heels of a popular revolution, is taking the Nagorno Karabakh conflict into unchartered territory. Although the territory is not recognized as an independent state by any UN member countries and is widely considered occupied, Armenia sought to attract more than 5,000 international visitors to the games, despite the outcry from Azerbaijan and repeated warnings from various governments, including a travel advisory from the U.S. State Department not to travel into a conflict zone.

Nagorno Karabakh and the other separatist enclaves in the region have sought international recognition from UN member states over the last three decades, but to no avail. Tourism incentives and sports competitions like the Pan-Armenian Games are designed to attract attention and potential investments. In the past, Karabakh Armenians have held various tournaments, including football cups among unrecognized states—because no UN-recognized countries would get involved—to boost the entity’s images. None of these games have produced the desired result.

Prime Minister Pashinyan’s speech in Nagorno Karabakh, on the eve of the opening of the Games, speaks volumes about the new Armenian government’s aims. At a rally with thousands of people, Pashinyan delivered a veritable pep-talk to Armenians the world over laying out an ambitious vision for Armenia. The Prime Minister said that by 2050, Armenia would increase its population to at least 5 million people (from about 3 million people), create 1.5 million jobs, and eliminate poverty. He also vowed to start transforming Armenia into an industrial country, increase its gross domestic product 15-fold, and have at least five Armenian technological companies whose worth will surpass $10 billion. Pashinyan said that salaries in Armenia would grow seven-fold. When it comes to security, Armenia would “rank at least in the top 20 list of the most combat ready armies of the world and have intelligent services ranking in the top 10 list.”

This lofty economic vision will only be possible through peace with neighboring Azerbaijan and Turkey. This speech was designed to galvanize the Armenian Diaspora about a future Armenia that annexes Nagorno Karabakh, yet distances itself even further from a peace agreement. Prime Minister Pashinyan, like preceding administrations, understands that the Armenian diaspora with its financial contributions are the backbone of Armenia’s economy and sustaining the presence of Armenian troops in Nagorno Karabakh. These measures appealing to sensitivities of nationalist circles across the Armenian diaspora, should, in Pashinyan’s estimation, generate new investments in the Armenian economy.

Thus, sports in Armenia’s reality are a larger competition for much-needed foreign currency to salvage a struggling landlocked Armenian economy in the wake of growing discontent over the mismanagement of national budget and breaking promises of the revolutionary Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The Pan-Armenian Games medals have been awarded and its athletes have returned to their home countries, the struggle for Nagorno Karabakh will continue. People will resume their lives in a state of neither peace, nor war. In the end, the Games could severely damage the peace process and encourage Azerbaijan to invest more in its army, switching to a more aggressive military strategy. The future will tell what the real outcome of the Games will be, but for now, Armenia might as well bask in the glory of its self-declared victory.

Pashinyan finances Soros NGOs with the funds of RA taxpayers

The Armenian government has allocated financial resources to two Armenian organizations supported by the West, particularly the American billionaire, global financial speculator George Soros’ “Open Society Funds”, to carry out an observation mission in the upcoming local government elections in Artsakh.

We are talking about the Stepanakert office of the “Union of Conscious Citizens” NGO and the “Transparency International” anti-corruption center. According to today’s decision of the executive, which was adopted unanimously, around 50 million drams will be allocated to these two organizations.

Deputy Head of Government Staff Tsovinar Soghomonyan mentioned that local self-government elections will be held in Artsakh in September 2019. Based on the principle of holding free, fair, transparent and democratic elections adopted by the RA government, it is appropriate for the civil society in Artsakh to support the implementation of the election observation mission.

Thus, the non-governmental organization “Union of Conscious Citizens” and the anti-corruption center “Transparency International” have expressed their desire to conduct an observation mission for the local government elections to be held in Artsakh on September 8. They propose to allocate 33 million 680 thousand drams to the Prime Minister’s Office in 9 months from the reserve fund of the RA government provided for in the 2019 state budget to the above organizations. in order to provide on the basis of the grant agreement. 16 million 200 thousand drams will be allocated to “Union of Informed Citizens” Stepanakert office to the non-governmental organization, and 17 million 480 thousand drams to the “Transparency International” anti-corruption center.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan made the adoption of this project important. “As I have stated, the Armenian government and I personally believe that RA should provide additional support to guarantee the free expression of the people of Artsakh,” the Prime Minister said, adding that this decision is within the framework of these measures. The Prime Minister considered the decision unprecedented.

It is worth noting that these two structures fed by Soros and other western foundations made a rather serious contribution to the implementation of the “Velvet Revolution”. They and other structures financed by the Soros Foundation were working with all their infrastructure and resources for the implementation of the revolution. In addition, these two structures, and more specifically the “Union of Conscious Citizens” have been openly conducting anti-Russian propaganda for years, spreading comments, informative videos and texts on the Internet.

As for the “Transparency International” anti-corruption center, this organization, in addition to trying to carry out an observation mission, is quite closely connected with the executive.

So, let’s see who are the members of the general assembly of “Transparency International” anti-corruption center.

• Araik Harutyunyan – RA Minister of Education and Science

• Liana Ghaltaghchyan – Deputy Chief of Staff of the RA Prime Minister

• Christine Margaryan – coordinator of human resources and organizational development, TI NGO

• Lena Nazaryan – Deputy Chairman, RA National Assembly

• Sarhat Petrosyan – Head of RA real estate cadastre committee

• Heriknaz Tigranyan – Deputy Chairman, Standing Committee on Health and Social Affairs of the RA National Assembly

Mikael Minasyan: Serzh Sargsyan will be arrested to sidetrack Armenia public from real issues for a while more Mikael Minasyan: Serzh Sargsyan will be arrested to sidetrack Armenia public from real issues for a while more

14:52, 17.08.2019

Armenian News-NEWS.am has interviewed Mikael Minasyan, Armenia’s former Ambassador to the Holy See. Below is the text of this interview.

Mr. Minasyan, your Facebook post yesterday received a wide reaction. Your one quick remark, however, raised questions. You had noted not about the arrested former president, but the presidents. Were you implying [third President] Serzh Sargsyan? Do you think he will be arrested, too?

Of course. This is the whole logic of the activities of these authorities: indictment and arrest. Today, a significant portion of the state resources is spent on indictments and arrests. But the problem is that it no longer works. After the first 5, 10, 15, 20 arrests, the heated public reaction has already weakened, it does not change the public mood, it does not become an agenda. Tomorrow, the next day those steps will only cause disdain, no doubt, especially because in many cases, there is an impression of corruption-risk containing dealings is being formed.

As a result of [their] own illogical steps, the authorities have created for themselves and have three difficult tasks to address at this time: the Amulsar [gold mine], the Istanbul Convention, developments around Artsakh [(Nagorno-Karabakh)]. These have been compounded by a total absence of executive and legislative work. As a result, the wave of public discontent is on the verge of going beyond the limits of being manageable; this is already visible to the authorities. Knowing well the primitive logic of these authorities, one can easily predict that instead of seeking solutions, they will go on their loved road of sidetracking public opinion through arrests. In their view, by way of deviation.

The authorities have one long-kept, planned “gold reserve” mega arrest; it is Serzh Sargsyan’s arrest. The authorities’ media trumpets have long been saying that. Simple calculation suggests that in the near future Serzh Sargsyan will be arrested to sidetrack the public from the real problems for a while more.

Let me say more. The authorities’ fear from the possible consequences of the three problems I already have noted is so great that they, in all likelihood, will not be satisfied only with Serzh Sargsyan’s arrest, but will concoct something also toward one or several generals. I do not rule out that I will fill those ranks as well.

Going for the step of a myopic leak through foreign press has attested [to the fact] that one of our heroes—Major General Samvel Karapetyan—will also be arrested. It is not hard to understand why they [the Armenian authorities] need that. It is apparent that they also have a task of silencing the military elite.

In your view, is Serzh Sargsyan aware of this scenario, of the possible developments? And is he ready for it?

He is always ready for any development of events. Serzh Sargsyan will be arrested and, with that, he will serve his next great service to his people. He will be imprisoned, and everyone will once and for all be convinced that if we remove the arrests from the “revolution,” then as a result, nothing remains. The people’s condition—all the same—is not changing, the investments are not increasing, new jobs are not opened, life is not becoming safer and better; on the contrary, it is getting worse. Serzh Sargsyan will show—with himself—so that temperance prevails as soon as possible. By arresting him, the authorities will exhaust both the effectiveness and opportunity to use repression as a tool.

It is now a fact that the objective of the change of power [in Armenia] was the primitive fight for the seat, to comfortably sit in the seats of power; nothing else. Very soon it will be clear to everyone [as to] who is the thief and the plunderer, who is the shameful liar and the schemer without proof, moreover, who is the incapable loser. It is perhaps a twist of fate that these authorities of losers can do nothing without the figures they themselves have mythicized. Even without enmity against them, these authorities are nothing. These authorities have nothing to say and do without fighting against their [those figures’] shadow. It is funny, but a fact.

You implied that a legal process would start against you, too. Do you think a criminal case will be brought against you, too?

Definitely. In fact, ever since the new authorities were formed, one of the first actions [of theirs] has been to check everyone and companies associated to and with me. They have checked everything possible, and everything related to all times possible. So far, they have not succeeded, but that does not yet mean that they have stopped searching. Ultimately, it is a matter of time. As they say: if there is a person, an article [against him] will be found, and someone will be found in the legal system who will “frame” that case with the order from above.

After finding nothing [on me] for a year and a half, now launching a criminal case will already be the political order being carried out with the most direct instruction. And that is highly predictable, risky, and life will put everything in place. The authorities of the day are crossing all boundaries, [but] forgetting that we will all live under the same sky, and nothing—especially power—is eternal. And the real challenges surrounding our homeland require solutions by the hour. This is the key issue that will force the temperance of all layers of society, as soon as possible. The time has come to break all myths.
