YEREVAN, APRIL 26, ARMENPRESS. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has held a phone call with President of the European Council Charles Michel.

“Views were exchanged around the military-political and humanitarian situation in the region,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a readout.

The Armenian Prime Minister “emphasized that the Azerbaijani side’s steps in the Lachin Corridor are aimed at the consistent implementation of its policy of committing ethnic cleansing in Nagorno Karabakh and fully depopulating Nagorno Karabakh.”

PM Pashinyan also “stressed the importance of an adequate reaction by the international community to Azerbaijan’s actions undermining regional security, as well as implementation of practical steps in the direction of the unconditional fulfillment of the International Court of Justice ruling.”

The Armenia-Azerbaijan negotiations process was also discussed.

“The sides attached importance to consistent efforts in the direction of ensuring stability and peace in the region.”

The Lachin Corridor has been blocked by Azerbaijan since 12 December 2022.

The United Nations’ highest court – the International Court of Justice (ICJ) – ordered Azerbaijan on February 22 to “take all steps at its disposal” to ensure unimpeded movement of persons, vehicles and cargo along the Lachin Corridor in both directions. Azerbaijan has so far ignored the ruling.

PM Pashinyan highlights need for international system of guarantees in possible peace treaty with Azerbaijan

 13:38,

YEREVAN, APRIL 20, ARMENPRESS. The possible peace treaty with Azerbaijan must include a relevant system of guarantees that would maintain the terms of the treaty, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan told reporters in parliament on April 20.

At the same time, he said that in the present-day international situation no country can clearly guarantee anything, including in relation to its security.

Asked why Armenia should sign a peace treaty with Azerbaijan if even international guarantees are no guarantees, Pashinyan said: “First of all it’s not yet a fact that we will sign [it]. I hope and I am ready to sign within the framework of the issues that I have raised. And if we are signing, then we are signing it because without doing so it is guaranteed that everything will be the way we don’t want it to be. While by signing it the probability that it won’t happen that way increases significantly,” PM Pashinyan said, explaining that possible negative developments in the event of not signing a treaty will be worse than the possible negative developments in the event of signing it.

The Armenian Prime Minister added that Azerbaijan is now in euphoria and is making provocative statements seeking to make Armenia give in to these provocations.

Pashinyan said that the April 19 statement by the foreign ministry is a response to these provocative statements and that he himself will respond when needed.

Russia hopes no one will impede settlement in South Caucasus — Lavrov

Russia – April 7 2023
Russia is in favor of deepening cooperation among countries in the region

ANKARA, April 7. /TASS/. Russia expects that non-regional actors will not interfere with the settlement in the South Caucasus, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told a news conference following talks with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on Friday.

“We hope that some of our extra-regional colleagues will not interfere with these processes (settlement in the South Caucasus – TASS) and orient the parties towards the strict implementation of the trilateral Russian-Armenian-Azerbaijani agreements,” he said.

He stressed that these agreements “remain the main basis for further work.”

Russia is in favor of deepening cooperation among countries in the region.

“We welcome the process of normalization between Armenia and Turkey, launched with our support. We welcome efforts to unblock transport links in the region and, of course, to promote the post-conflict restoration of the South Caucasus,” Lavrov said.

Asbarez: Russia Takes Aim at EU and Expects Criminal Court Matter Will be Settled ‘Amicably’ with Armenia

The International Criminal Court is headquartered in The Hague

The Russian foreign ministry on Thursday said that Moscow expects that the matter of Armenia’s membership in the International Criminal Court will be resolved amicably among allies, and once again blasted the European Union for meddling in the region.

Russia also said that “there has been no discussion” on an Azerbaijani proposal to open a checkpoint along the Lachin Corridor, a term Baku has proposed as a pre-condition for opening the road, which has been blockaded since December 12, despite its insistence that there is no such blockade.

Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said during a press briefing on Thursday that the topic of Armenia’s membership in the International Criminal Court has been a topic of discussion during high-level meetings in both Moscow and Yerevan.

“I do not consider it necessary to publish the details of those contacts,” said Zakharova. “We assume that this issue will be resolved in a mutually acceptable way as customary for allies.”

Armenia’s Constitutional Court last week said the the Rome Statute that established the International Criminal Court did not contradict with Armenia’s Constitution. On Tuesday, Moscow issued a stern warning to Armenia about its membership in the court, which has issued an arrest warrant for President Vladimir Putin of Russia.

During the same briefing, Zakharova also accused the European Union of have “destructive intentions” in the region and not being interested in building confidence between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The comments stemmed from a statement made by the head of the EU’s monitoring mission in Armenia Markus Ritter, who told a German news program that because his group had no access to Azerbaijan, it was unable to determine whether Azerbaijan was preparing to attack Armenia, as some in Yerevan have said.

“If there is no attack by Azerbaijan this spring, it can be said that the EU mission has been successful,” Ritter added.

Zakharova said that Moscow understands the deep divisions between Armenia and Azerbaijan, but believes that the sides can come to an agreement.

“The main thing is to create an appropriate atmosphere for them, an appropriate basis for such agreements, mutual understanding, and to contribute to that mutual understanding, and not the other way around,” Zakharova said.

She said that statements such as the ones made by Ritter “only confirm the validity of our conclusions regarding the destructive intentions and actions of the European Union in this region.”

“Brussels is clearly not interested in confidence building and rapprochement between Azerbaijan and Armenia. And with its incompetent, constant, unprofessional, unwise, and dishonest actions, it is provoking disagreements between Baku and Yerevan. And, in my opinion, we can all see it, and it is simply not possible to conceal it,” said Zakharova.

“Of course, it is unfortunate that the EU does not think about what unpredictable consequences its irresponsible policies can have for peace and stability in Transcaucasia. We call on them to abandon such confrontational scenarios,” added Zakharova, who said that it was Russia’s efforts that ended the war in 2020.

Route of Lachin Corridor changed

 11:50,

YEREVAN, MARCH 30, ARMENPRESS. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan commented on the latest developments regarding the change of the route in the Lachin Corridor.

Speaking at the Cabinet meeting on March 30, Pashinyan mentioned that back in August 2022,the route of the Lachin Corridor was changed as a result of an agreement reached between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan authorities. A new road was opened, but since the Lachin Corridor (the road connecting Nagorno Karabakh to Armenia) wasn’t completely ready yet, a temporary route was launched. The temporary road was entering the territory of Armenia through the Kornidzor bridge, then passing to the Azerbaijani territory again, and then again entering the territory of Armenia. According to the agreement, this route was to function until 1 April, 2023.

“Yesterday we notified the Azerbaijani side that in accordance with the agreement, after the Kornidzor bridge the road will continue only through the territory of Armenia, and that the border guards of Armenia will assume the protection of the state border of Armenia in that section. The border guards will be deployed on the state border of Armenia, in the same positions where the military units were stationed till this day,” he said.

He warned that the Azerbaijani media are trying to misrepresent this.

“They are trying to misrepresent this as another blockbuster. This approach is not constructive, to say the least.”

Pashinyan reiterated that there’s been no change in Armenian positions. The only change is that the protection of that section will be implemented by border guards, and not the military.

“We’ve made a proposal to Azerbaijan so that the same happens from their side too,” Pashinyan added.

The Armenian Prime Minister expressed hope that this process will take place without any provocations.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Artsakh earlier said that the Azerbaijani military has blocked Goris-Stepanakert highway’s Aghavno-Tegh section.

YEREVAN, MARCH 27, ARMENPRESS. A young couple from Uganda was left devastated when their 18 months old baby girl was diagnosed with SCD, aka sick cell anemia, a typically inherited blood disease that may cause multiple health problems.

“Nora was 18 months old when we realized that she’s having trouble standing,” Agnes Achan, the child’s mother, told ARMENPRESS at the Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Armenia. “She was having bouts of fever and cough. We took her for a Malaria test and doctors prescribed antibiotics. But it was getting worse. She lost weight beyond recognition.”

After many visits to various doctors, Nora was diagnosed with SCD. Her parents consulted with various hospitals around the world after choosing to travel to Armenia in October of 2022 for their child’s treatment.

This was their first ever visit to the country.

“Today we don’t even want to go back, though we didn’t know anything about your country a few months ago,” Agnes Achan said.

After a successful course of treatment, Nora, now 5, is full of energy, healthy, and is jumping around playfully all day long.

“I am very grateful to this hospital and the City of Smile charitable foundation, which really brought back my baby’s smile. I am grateful to all the doctors and the department of psychological support,” Achan added, noting that the doctors were providing 24/7 assistance.

“I advise all my countrymen in Uganda to come here to this Armenian hospital if they require treatment. The doctors here are very caring, they love children and are very attentive.”

The child was treated using allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Nora’s 3-year-old brother was the donor. He and their father have already returned to Uganda.

The procedure is rather expensive around the world, but it is much cheaper in Armenia. The hospital gets support from City of Smile, the DMKS German organization and the Italian Cure2Children international foundation.

Children from Cameroon and Nigeria have also received allogeneic stem cell transplantation in the hospital.
