U.S. ASSOCIATION WITHDRAWS AWARD TO AMB. EVANS FOLLOWING ARMENIAN GENOCIDE COMMENTS
Pallone Expresses Disappointment to Congress
Washington, DC – The Armenian Assembly today commended Congressman
Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) for expressing disappointment over the
American Foreign Service Association’s (AFSA) unprecedented withdrawal
of its Herter Award for “constructive dissent” from U.S. Ambassador
to Armenia John Evans for his proper characterization of the Armenian
Genocide.
Evans, during his public exchanges with Armenian-American communities
throughout the United States in March, declared that “the Armenian
Genocide was the first genocide of the twentieth century.” Members
of the House and Senate, as well as the Assembly, publicly supported
Evans’ declarations and called on President George W. Bush to also
accurately label this crime against humanity.
In a speech before the House of Representatives Monday, Pallone said in
part: “It is simply unacceptable for this Administration to continue
to penalize the ambassador for his comments. Ambassador Evans did
a courageous thing. His statements did not contradict U.S. policy,
but rather articulated the same message that this Administration
has sent to the public. The only difference in this case is that
Ambassador Evans assigned a word to define the actions taken against
the Armenians.”
For example, in 1981, Ronald Reagan issued a presidential proclamation
that said in part: “like the genocide of the Armenians before it,
and the genocide of the Cambodians which followed it – and like too
many other persecutions of too many other people – the lessons of the
Holocaust must never be forgotten…” President Bush himself has also
carefully set forth the textbook definition of the crime of genocide
as it applies to Armenians in his successive April 24th statements
of remembrance.
AFSA President John W. Limbert last week told the Washington Post
that no one at the organization can remember an award being withdrawn
after it had been announced.
Pallone also noted that the AFSA rescinded the award days before
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in Washington
for a meeting with President Bush.
The Armenian Assembly of America is the largest Washington-based
nationwide organization promoting public understanding and awareness
of Armenian issues. It is a 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt membership
organization.

comments as delivered on the floor of the House of Representatives
on June 13, 2005.
AMERICAN FOREIGN SERVICE ASSOCIATION AWARD WITHDRAWN – (House of
Representatives – June 13, 2005)
Mr. PALLONE. Mr. Speaker, I rise this evening to express my
disappointment with the American Foreign Service Association, and
its decision to withdraw awarding a “Constructive Dissent” award to
U.S. Armenian Ambassador John Evans.
Ambassador Evans was due to receive the Christian A. Heter Award for
intellectual courage, initiative, and integrity later this week. The
award was as a result of courageous statements he made regarding the
recognition of the Armenian genocide.
In a series of public statements, Ambassador Evans, who has studied
Russian history at Yale and Columbia and Ottoman history at the Kennan
Institute stated, “I will today call it the Armenian genocide.”
Mr. Speaker, Ambassador Evans has studied history of Armenia , and
based on his substantial studies of the issue, he is willing to go on
the record and define the actions taken Armenians as genocide. The
Armenian genocide was the systematic extermination, the murder,
of 1.5 million Armenian men, women and children. To this day, the
Republic of Turkey refuses to acknowledge the fact that this massive
crime against humanity took place on soil under its control, and in
the name of Turkish nationalism.
Unfortunately, some 90 years later, the U.S. State Department continues
to support Turkey’s demands and denials despite all evidence to the
contrary. It is not likely that the State Department was happy that
their Ambassador to Armenia acknowledged the Armenian genocide. And,
therefore, Ambassador Evans retracted his remarks after receiving
substantial pressure from the State Department.
Well, now the selection committee at the American Foreign Service
Association has decided to withdraw the award with no reason for
its actions. I find the timing of the decision peculiar. The sharp
turnaround came right before Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan arrived in
Washington for a meeting with President Bush. Based on past history,
it is clear that the State Department, the Bush administration, and the
pro-Turkish lobby pressured AFSA to withdraw Ambassador Evans’ award.
It is simply unacceptable for this administration to continue to
penalize the ambassador for his comments. Ambassador Evans did a
courageous thing. His statements did not contradict U.S. policy,
but rather articulated the same message that this administration
has sent to the public. The only difference in this case is that
Ambassador Evans assigned a word to define the actions taken against
the Armenians.
This was a refreshing break, I must add, from a pattern on the part of
the State Department of using evasive and euphemistic terminology to
obscure the full reality of the Armenian genocide. Ambassador Evans
pointed out, and I quote, that no American official has ever denied
it, and went on to say, and I quote, I think we, the U.S. Government,
owe you, our fellow citizens, a more frank and honest way of discussing
this problem.
Ambassador Evans was merely recounting the historical record, which
has been attested to by over 120 Holocaust and genocide scholars from
around the world. By doing this, he earned a prestigious award that
was taken from him because of politics and denial.
Mr. Speaker, I want to add my voice to all those who, in Ambassador
Evans’ own words, and again I am quoting, think it is unbecoming of
us as Americans to play word games here. I believe in calling things
by their name. Evans was right, and the American Foreign Service
Association was correct in awarding him the Christian A. Herter
Award. We should encourage our Ambassadors to speak the truth, and,
more broadly, end, once and for all, our complicity in Turkey’s
campaign of genocide denial.
Mr. Speaker, Ambassador Evans has been penalized for simply telling the
truth. The American Foreign Service Association has set a terrible
example by retracting Ambassador Evans’ award. I guess, even in
America, the Turkish Government is able to stifle debate.

in Berlin lebenden Türken. Im Frühherbst will Piening im Rahmen von
Projekttagen an Schulen Diskussionen über den Armenienkonflikt
anbieten. Der Migrationsbeauftragte begrüßte, dass das Land
Brandenburg bereits als erstes Bundesland ähnliche Wege gegangen sei.
Geplant seien nach dem Sommer außerdem deutsch-türkisch-armenische
Dialogveranstaltungen. Der Vorstand des liberalen Türkischen Bundes
kündigte an, sich am Mittwoch mit den wieder entflammten Debatten
auseinander zu setzen.

Virage Logic Chief Scientist Named 2005 IEEE Industrial Pioneer Awar
Virage Logic Chief Scientist Named 2005 IEEE Industrial Pioneer Award Recipient
PR Newswire (press release)
June 14 2005
Dr. Yervant Zorian Recognized for Significant Contributions to Advanced
Embedded Test and Repair Technologies for SoC Design
Design Automation Conference, ANAHEIM, Calif., June 14
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Citing his enormous contributions
to design-for-test and embedded repair technology for complex
System-on-Chip (SoC) design, Dr.
Yervant Zorian, vice president and chief scientist at Virage Logic
Corporation (Nasdaq: VIRL) was today named the 2005 IEEE Circuits
and Systems (CAS) Industrial Pioneer award recipient. Dr. Zorian’s
technical accomplishments include pioneering work in Built-In Self-Test
(BIST) and embedded repair technologies and products that have
dramatically boosted the quality, reliability and manufacturability
of digital systems.
In 2000, Dr. Zorian brought his technology vision and expertise in BIST
solutions to Virage Logic where he helped to pioneer a new class of
Intellectual Property (IP) called Silicon Aware IP(TM). Silicon Aware
IP is Physical IP, such as memories, logic and I/Os, designed with
embedded Infrastructure IP for test, diagnostics, repair, and yield
enhancements. The result is IP that is high yielding and enables rapid
time-to-volume at advanced process nodes. In addition, Silicon Aware
IP results in much higher test quality and reliability. Today, Virage
Logic believes it is the only commercial IP provider to offer Silicon
Aware IP, an example of which is its Self-Test and Repair (STAR)
Memory System(TM). The company’s Silicon Aware IP initiative calls
for its entire product portfolio to become Silicon Aware IP over time.
“The self-test and repair capabilities that Dr. Zorian developed for
SoCs have become the de facto standard in 90-nanometer technology
for much of the electronics designed around the world,” said Adam
Kablanian, president and CEO of Virage Logic. “His pioneering vision
for providing an effective test technology solution integrated with IP
has enabled Virage Logic to deliver a proven path for design success
at the advanced process geometries of 130nm and below. We are proud
to have such a technology visionary on our team and congratulate him
on his selection by the IEEE as their 2005 Industrial Pioneer.”
Each year, the IEEE CAS Society honors outstanding scientists and
engineers who have successfully translated their research into
commercial products or applications. With the Silicon Aware STAR
Memory System, Dr.
Zorian turned the concepts of embedded repair to real life systems
that are yieldable and reliable, and succeeded in penetrating the
industry and changing its standard practices.
“It is a great honor to be selected by the IEEE CAS Society for
this award,” said Dr. Zorian, vice president and chief scientist of
Virage Logic.
“I’ve worked with many talented people at Virage Logic to develop
the self- test and repair solutions we have today and this award is
as much a reflection of their hard work as it is mine. Together, we
have helped SoC designers accelerate silicon success by improving
reliability and manufacturability to speed time-to-volume and
significantly increase yield.”
About Dr. Zorian
Dr. Zorian joined Virage Logic in 2000 as Chief Scientist. Prior to
joining Virage Logic, he served as Chief Technology Advisor at
LogicVision and as a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Bell
Labs, AT&T. His responsibilities included developing and disseminating
embedded test and repair solutions for IP cores, chips, boards and
systems. Dr. Zorian also serves on the Board of Directors of several
public and privately owned companies.
Dr. Zorian serves as the IEEE Computer Society Vice President for
Conferences and Tutorials as well as the Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of
the IEEE Design & Test of Computers. He also participates in editorial
advisory boards of IEEE Spectrum and JETTA. He has chaired numerous
conferences, symposiums, workshops, and the IEEE Test Technology
Technical Council of IEEE Computer Society. He founded and chairs the
IEEE 1500 Standard Working Group, and the IEEE Workshops on Testing
Embedded Core-based Systems-on-Chips (TECS), and Infrastructure
IP Workshop.
Dr. Zorian has authored over 300 papers and four books, received
several best paper awards, and holds twelve U.S. patents. He is
a Golden Core Member of IEEE Computer Society, Honorary Doctor of
the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, and a Fellow of IEEE.
Dr. Zorian received his master’s degree in Computer Engineering from

Vote under way in key Lebanon areas
Al-Jazeera, Qatar

Vote under way in key Lebanon areas
Sunday 12 June 2005, 15:05 Makka Time, 12:05 GMT
Sixty-three parliamentary seats are up for grabs in Sunday’s vote
Voters are heading into polling stations in central and eastern
Lebanon to decide nearly half the legislative seats, in the third
stage of staggered parliamentary elections.
A total of 1.25 million people are eligible to vote in the Mount
Lebanon and eastern Bekaa Valley regions on Sunday in the penultimate
stage of Lebanon’s first national election without the presence of
Syrian troops for three decades.
The most heated contests involve Christian leader Michel Aoun and his
allies against a coalition, led by Druze leader Walid Jumblatt, in
the central Baabda-Aley constituency and against a Christian alliance
in the Byblos-Kesrwan district.
Aljazeera’s correspondent in Lebanon, Ghassan bin Jiddo, reported
that tensions in some districts had proven too much for some voters.
Fighting broke out in Bekaa, and some people have been injured.
Mutual accusations among participants have also emerged in the
al-Matn area. Supporters of the Free National Trend alleged that some
alliances have distributed money to voters in public – an accusation
denied by all opposition parties.
About 100 candidates are competing in Mount Lebanon, with seats
allocated to different sects according to Lebanon’s power-sharing
political system.
Thirty-five seats are up for grabs in Mount Lebanon and 28 in the
Bekaa.
Two seats have been won uncontested in Mount Lebanon – Jumblatt and
ally Marwan Hamadeh, both lawmakers in the outgoing parliament.
Seats in the first two rounds of voting, in Beirut and the south, for
the most part were split almost evenly between opponents of Syria and
supporters of the Islamist Hizb Allah resistance organisation.
Unexpected alliances
Anti-Syrian forces need a strong showing in Sunday’s vote in the
central and eastern regions – at least 45 seats for a majority – to
win a firm grasp on the 128-member parliament.
But the campaign has led to some surprising alliances and left some
races too close to call.
The vote in central Mount Lebanon, the nation’s most populous region,
has been billed as the “mother of all battles” as it pits Jumblatt’s
allies against Aoun’s.
Aoun, who fought and lost a war against Syria in 1989 before going
into a 14-year exile, was one of Syria’s main Lebanese foes, but
recently broke with other opponents of Damascus and forged alliances
with pro-Syrian politicians.
Former exiled Christian General
Michel Aoun is hoping for victory
The anti-Syrian opposition also teamed up with Hizb Allah and the
pro-Syrian Shia Amal in some districts.
Aoun says his feud with Syria is over, now that Damascus has
withdrawn from Lebanon. He is campaigning on a promise to fight the
corruption he blames on Lebanon’s economic ills, including a national
debt of more than $30 billion.
In Metn, the former general has forged an alliance with pro-Syrian
politician Michel Murr and Armenian political party Tashnag, against
an anti-Syrian ticket, headed by legislator Nassib Lahoud and Pierre
Gemayel, son of former President Amin Gemayel.
And in Bekaa, a list backed by Saad al-Din al-Hariri, son of
assassinated former Prime Minister Rafiq al-Hariri, is facing off
against pro-Syrian politicians.
Others in the anti-Syrian camp hope the elections, which end on 19
June with voting in the north, will finally end Damascus’s control of
the legislature.
Political tensions have spilled over into violence, and the
government has sent army and police reinforcements to Mount Lebanon,
the historic heart of the country.
Ara Abrahamyan Promises to Solve Social/Econ Problems of Eq. Guinea
ARA ABRAHAMYAN PROMISES TO SOLVE SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC PROBLEMS OF
EQUATORIAL GUINEA IN EXCHANGE FOR RELEASE OF ARMENIAN PILOTS
YEREVAN, JUNE 11. ARMINFO. Head of the World Armenian Congress (WAC)
Ara Abrahamyan has undertaken definite commitments to the Government
of Equatorial Guinea i.e. to solve socio-economic problems of that
country, in exchange for release of six Armenian pilots sentenced to
long-years of imprisonment charged for an attempt of a state coup. WAC
Representative, specialist in political science Andranik Mihranyan
said at a press conferences in Yerevan. Mihranyan arrived in Malabo to
accompany the Armenia pilots to the Motherland on the instruction of
A.Abrahamyan.
In his turn, A.Abrahamyan confirmed this statement promising to
fulfill all the commitments to the leadership of Equatorial Guinea. He
said release of Armenian pilots was a victory of the Armenian
people. Abrahamyan informed those present that he was asked by the
Armenian Foreign Ministry to interfere into the process. He pointed
out that no matter whose efforts were a success, the most important
was that Armenia’s international image was not damaged. He said he had
applied to Russian Foreign Minister, to UNESCO and even the Roman Pope
John Paul II for mediation for amnesty of Armenian pilots. WAC Head
emphasized the great contribution of the Armenian Foreign Ministry to
the release of the pilots. Thus, he stated that Representative of the
Armenian Foreign Ministry seven times visited Malabo and negotiated
with the leadership of Equatorial Guinea. If even one link fell from
this chain of persons and structures, this case would not be a
success, he said. Abrahamyan also pointed out the importance of
Ambassador of Equatorial Guinea to Russia stated at a press conference
in Moscow that Armenian pilot might not be guilty, they might be used.
In his turn, Mihranyan told the details of his trip to that
country. He told that arriving in Malabo, he met with Security
Minister of that country who stated that Ara Abrahamyan did not
fulfill part of his promises so the pilot could not be
released. Mihranyan told he was scared of being imprisoned together
with the pilots. Fortunately, the following day, the minister told
that Ara Abrahamyan fulfilled his commitments and the pilots were
released. Mihranyan admits that few people believed in the success of
this case as citizens of Russia, Bulgaria and other states are
currently in prisons in African states and being humiliated. He said
that Armenian pilots behaved very good and did not give in morally.
In their turn, the Armenia pilots reiterated that they were not guilty
in the crime. They told they had been kept in cells for 457 days put
into irons, however those in prison were to some extent afraid of them
and they were respected. “IF any devices were out of order in prison,
we were often asked for help. After Ara Abrahamyan sent money and
brandy for us through the brother-in- law of the President of
Equatorial Guinea, the attitude of the prison guards sharply changed,
they used to leave the door of the cells open. While, the head of the
prison used to bring us beer from the shop. Of course, we paid him,”
joked the Armenian pilots. They said in prison they undergo medical
treatment and lived exclusively on the funds transferred by Ara
Abrahanyan, though only 205 of these funds were given to them.

One on One Interview with Susianna Kentikian
By Torben L.
Susianna Kentikian was born on 11th September 1987 in Jerewan, Armenia. Her
life story sounds like a movie script, despite her young age of only 17. She
came with her family to Hamburg, Germany in 1996, fleeing the civil war in
Armenia. They stayed the first years in Hamburg at asylum seeker’s homes,
under the constant threat of expulsion. More than once the family was
dragged out of bed by the Police in the middle of the night and transported
to the airport for deportation. Fortunately expulsion was avoided in the
last minute through the intervention, among others, her boxing trainer Frank
Rieth.
Her first encounter with boxing took place 5 years ago, when she
accompanied her brother Mikael to a boxing club. Not content with the role
as a spectator, she learned to box herself and has remained in the tough
game ever since. She won the Hamburg Championships for juniors from 2001 to
2004, as well as the several North German Championships.
Website:
Her biggest achievement as an amateur was a gold medal at the International
German Women’s Amateur Championships in Maisach 2004 in the featherweight
division for juniors. This was done in convincing style by beating Tasheena
Bugar 27-19 in the semi final. Kentikian then went on to a 27-5 win in the
final against Alessandra Sieber. Further honour was bestowed on her at the
championships, as she won the award for the best technical boxer in the
junior division.
Kentikian found it increasingly difficult to find opponents in the amateur
ranks, as very few wanted to face her in the ring. Her status as asylum
seeker also added to the problems, as she was not allowed to box outside
Hamburg. So when Spotlight-Boxing offered her a 3 year contract in the
beginning of 2005, she jumped at the chance to help herself and not least
her family. Susianna’s mother is in constant need of care and her father
suffers from temporary bouts of depression. So the steady income Susianna
now earns as a pro boxer, is a very welcome help to the family. This has
also solved the family’s problems with regard to their asylum seekers’
status, at least for the time being. They have received a temporary
residence permit, because the family is now self supporting through
Susianna’s income and her father’s involvement in the team. It also means
that, Susianna has been able to stop working as a cleaner in her spare time,
and concentrate on her boxing career and her school work.
She made her debut as a pro on 15th January 2005 in Magdeburg against Iliana
Boneva, whom she beat on points over 4 rounds.
Her next fight was in her home town of Hamburg on 26th February 2005, where
she made it a short evening for herself and her opponent, Debbie Paterok
(formerly Lohmeier). Paterok was KO’ed with a hard punch to the head 1 min
22 seconds into the first round.
Kentian’s 3rd fight was also in Hamburg and took place on 29th March, 2005.
This was even shorter than the previous fight. Lucie Hornakova had enough
after 37 seconds of the first round, and gave up.
Her 4th fight took place in Magdeburg on 7th May against Juliia Vlasenko of
the Ukraine. Kentikian took command right from the start of and kept up
pressure throughout, especially with her right hand. Vlasenko turned her
back on Kentikan after a combination in the 3rd round, and the referee
stopped the fight.
Susianna Kentikian is due to fight again on 4th June 2005. The opponent is
yet to be revealed.

Turkish MP on confidence-building visit to Armenia

YEREVAN
Turan Comez, MP of the [ruling] Justice and Development Party, is
paying an unofficial visit to Yerevan. This is the first ever visit by
a Turkish MP to Armenia.
At today’s meeting with students of Yerevan State University, the
Turkish delegate conveyed greetings from Turkish Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan and described his visit to Yerevan as the first step on
the path to establishing good neighbourly relations and building
confidence between Armenia and Turkey.
“We want to preserve peace and develop relations between our
countries, which is possible without prerequisites being put
forward. We would also like all countries of the region to be able to
hope to receive access to its riches. The Turkish authorities have
displayed great interest and backed my initiative to visit Yerevan,”
he said.
He expressed confidence that the visit would yield positive results
and allow other Turkish officials to follow suit, especially as the
Turkish side also wants this very much. Speaking about Ankara’s policy
towards Armenia in the invariable association with the Nagornyy
Karabakh and Azerbaijan topic, the MP noted the need to focus on
topics which would bring the two peoples and states together but not
separate them.
“It is important to come to understand what happened in the past and
speak about it openly and truthfully,” the Turkish MP stressed.
Comez said that he is planing to meet his Armenian counterparts in the
Armenian National Assembly today. He believes that this meeting may be
the deciding one and be of great importance for future political
relations.
