Gathering In Florida To Educate Community On Armenian Issues

GATHERING IN FLORIDA TO EDUCATE COMMUNITY ON ARMENIAN ISSUES

Over one hundred South Florida activists rallied behind Ben Graber,
the former Broward County Commissioner who will run against Rep. Robert
Wexler (D-FL-19), Chairman of the Congressional Turkish Caucus and
fierce opponent of Armenian Genocide recognition, reported the Armenian
National Committee of South Florida.

The growing Armenian community in South Florida warmly welcomed Ben
Graber and his family, Margaret Ajemian Ahnert, author of "The Knock
at the Door," and Karine Birazian, Executive Director of the ANCA
Eastern Region.

"This was a wonderful opportunity for Armenian activists throughout
the area to learn more about what the ANCA does and how they can get
involved," commented ANC of S. Florida Chairman Albert Mazmanian.

"We plan to continue to have functions like this and invite all those
interested to attend."

During the function, Birazian updated the community on H. Res. 106,
legislation recognizing the Armenian Genocide, as well as shared with
them the recent victory of the withdrawal of the Hoagland nomination,
which took place hours before.

The 19th district, running from West Palm Beach to Fort Lauderdale,
boasts one of the largest concentrations of Armenians in the state of
Florida. Ben Graber’s opposition to Wexler’s policies on the Armenian
Genocide was well publicized by the local press and welcomed by
the Armenian-American community prior to his meeting with community
members and leaders.

During his speech, Graber proclaimed, "The American people cannot
and should not allow any state that commits genocide to erase it
from history, otherwise we will be setting the course for it to
happen again."

Additionally, he stated, "Their horrific experience opened the door
to the Jewish Holocaust and other genocides of that century."

Although Rep. Robert Wexler, Jewish himself, has been a leading
advocate against genocides such as Darfur, his opposition to the
Armenian Genocide resolution pending in Congress has puzzled community
leaders.

The second half of the night, the audience was honored with the
presence of Margaret Anhert who wrote a book on the Armenian Genocide
based on the accounts of her mother, a survivor of the genocide. Unlike
other scholarly books, Anhert’s charm and conversation with her mother
captivated and awed everyone.

Present at the function was community activist Hasmig Eskandarian who
recently relocated to southern Florida from Washington, DC. Eskandarian
commented: "The S. Florida ANC put together a very informative event.

Having recently relocated to southern Florida from Washington, DC,
I have been pleasantly surprised given the size of the local Armenian
community at the quality and organization of the local ANC events. This
proves that quality not quantity makes the difference."

Every Friday night, the Armenian Cultural Association of Florida
(ACAF) organizes a gathering at the Armenian Center in Deerfield Beach
allowing for Armenians from all over to maintain their Armenian
heritage through social and educational events. "The Armenian
community is becoming quite active down in South Florida. We plan to
have more gatherings like this in the near future," commented Bedros
Der-Bedrossian, ACAF Chairman.

BEIRUT: Gemayel Seeking To Restore Relationship With Armenians

GEMAYEL SEEKING TO RESTORE RELATIONSHIP WITH ARMENIANS

Naharnet, Lebanon
Aug 9 2007

Former President Amin Gemayel sought to restore his relationship with
the Armenian community which impaired over the Metn by-election.

"Let us not forget that the Armenian Martyrs Statue lies right next
to the statue of Sheikh Pierre," Gemayel told reporters on Wednesday
after meeting Armenian Catholicos Aram I Keshishian at his summer
home in Bikfaya.

The late Pierre Gemayel, who is the ex-president’s father, is founder
of the Phalange Party.

Gemayel, whose supporters blamed his loss on the large ethnic Armenian
community in the Metn district, declined allegations that he said
anything offensive to the Armenian people.

The Armenian Tashnag Party allied itself with Gen. Michel Aoun in
the Metn by-election.

"Some people confused what I said with what others said," Gemayel said.

Gemayel said that he had filed a complaint at the police station over
certain irregularities that took place during the Metn votes at Borj
Hammoud polling stations, adding that he was following up on the issue.

Gemayel, however, stressed that the Armenians are "dear to his heart,"
stressing on the economic, social and cultural ties with the Armenian
society in Lebanon.

Lawmaker Hagop Pakradounian explained that a lawsuit filed by Armenian
deputies was not directed against Gemayel but against Gabriel Murr
for comments he made.

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ "Media has carelessly cut the context and distorted
OSCE Co-chair Matt Bryza’s statement on the future status of Nagorno
Karabakh," said Mr Jonathan Henick, the PR Officer of the U.S. Embassy
in Azerbaijan.

"I read the interview myself and did not notice any changes in the
U.S. policy," he said.

"Mr Bryza openly stated that the U.S. supports the territorial
integrity of Azerbaijan. He said resolution of the Karabakh conflicts
demands serious compromise. However, a decision on possible concessions
may be taken by the leaders of the states only," Mr Henick said,
Day.az reports.

"As a mediator and diplomat I cannot determine the status of Nagorno
Karabakh. It’s not my task. Maybe the publics will once come to a
decision that Karabakh would better be independent. Maybe they will
prefer to be a part of Azerbaijan with the highest status of autonomy,"
Matt Bryza said in an interview with Vremya Novostey newspaper.

Azerbaijan completely believes that Albania sold armament to Armenia

Azerbaijan has completely come to believe in the fact that Albania has
sold armament to Armenia

Albania is an Islamic country and simply by its definition it can’t
supply the Christian Armenia with armament.
02.08.2007 GMT+04:00

Azerbaijan has completely come to believe in the fact that Albania has
sold armament to Armenia. Everything got so serious that even
President Ilham Aliyev underlined at the meeting of the Cabinet: `The
fact that Albania refused to sell armament to Armenia was just another
proof of Azerbaijan’s growing influence on the world scene.’

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Azeri Press Agency in its reference to Industrywatch
has announced, that the Turkish authorities refused to allow the
armament and the ammunition intended for Armenia pass by their
territory. `According to the Prime Minister of Albania Sali Barishi,
Turkey made the Albanian vessel carrying the armament turn back. `One
of our vessels with 60 containers carrying heavy artillery and
armament was at Durres. The vessel started from Durres to Istanbul,’
said in an interview to the Albanian Gazeta Shqiptare the Director of
MEIKO, the company dealing with trade of armament, and added that
Albania had nothing to do with the conflict between Armenia and
Azerbaijan.

According to the Press Service of the Azerbaijani Minister of Foreign
Affairs, on the initiative of the Albanian Minister of Foreign Affairs
Lulzim Basha a telephone conversation took place with the Azerbaijani
Minister of Foreign Affairs Elmar Mammedyarov on July 31. During the
conversation the Albanian Minister assured his colleague that the
Albanian government hadn’t given its agreement to `MEIKO’ on the sale
of the armament to Armenia. Lulzim Basha said, that `The contract on
the armament delivery is canceled and no other deliveries will be made
to Armenia,’ writes the Azeri press.

Meanwhile sale of armament to Armenia made by Albania and moreover
through Turkey is simply impossible, and it is strange that Baku
doesn’t understand this. Or it’s another thing if the country’s
authorities have again started to convince its nation that the Azeri
authorities keep the situation under control and will never `allow’
Armenia to be furnished with armament. According to the
Press-Secretary of the Armenian Minister of Defence Seyran
Shakhsuvaryan, Armenia has never bought and is not going to buy any
armament from Albania and the whole story with the armament being
delivered to Armenia is nothing but a mere lie. Albania is an Islamic
country and simply by its definition can’t supply the Christian
Armenia with armament. Armenia is a CSTO Member country and buys its
armament from RF, with much lower price than that of
Albanian. Moreover, Albania on account of OSCE Membership has no right
to sell armament to either of the conflicting parties. Baku may not be
ignorant of all this though. However the information reached the
addressee, in this case, the Azeri society, which is obviously tired
of `constant fires on the Azeri positions by the Armenians’ and `fires
around Nagorno-Karabakh’, for both are very good occasions to write
about deaths of soldiers and bad harvest. The same goes for the
armament – now it is possible to purchase weapon from anyone without
any difficulty.

The strange it may sound, the Turkish Press wrote nothing about this
`scandal’, for either Turkey has enough of its own problems to solve,
or Ankara doesn’t take this whole story with the armament seriously at
all.
