US Secretary of State tests positive for COVID-19

YEREVAN, MAY 5, ARMENPRESS. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken tested positive for COVID-19, State Department Spokesperson Ned Price said in a press statement.

“Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken tested positive for COVID-19 this afternoon via a PCR test. The Secretary is fully vaccinated and boosted against the virus and is experiencing only mild symptoms”, Ned Price said, adding that the Secretary has not seen President Joe Biden in person for several days, and the President is not considered a close contact according to guidelines by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“The Secretary will isolate at home and maintain a virtual work schedule. He looks forward to returning to the Department and resuming his full duties and travels as soon as possible”, the spokesperson said.

Recently Secretary Blinken met with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan in Washington D.C., Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde and Japanese National Security Advisor Akiba Takeo.

YEREVAN, 5 MAY, ARMENPRESS. The Central Bank of Armenia informs “Armenpress” that today, 5 May, USD exchange rate up by 9.86 drams to 464.49 drams. EUR exchange rate up by 13.72 drams to 492.31 drams. Russian Ruble exchange rate up by 0.41 drams to 7.02 drams. GBP exchange rate up by 13.64 drams to 582.70 drams.

The Central Bank has set the following prices for precious metals.

Gold price up by 502.36 drams to 27831.19 drams. Silver price up by 6.65 drams to 337.43 drams. Platinum price stood at 16414.1 drams.

Opposition says protests will continue

The “Resistance” movement held a rally in France Square today followed by a march in downtown Yerevan.

NA Deputy Speaker, member of the Armenia faction Ishkhan Saghatelyan said the protests will start at noon tomorrow and will continu until 2 pm. He called on supporters to return to France Square at 15:30 to demand the government’s resignation.

He said “after the change of power, a government of national accord will be formed.”

Tents remain in the square, the sit-in continues. Members of the movement have already spent two nights in the square.

The Police say 237 citizens were detained during the acts of disobedience today.

Speaker of Parliament Alen Simonyan Receives Delegation of Syria-Armenia Friendship Group

YEREVAN, APRIL 26, ARMENPRESS. On April 26, the President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Alen Simonyan received the delegation led by the Chair of the Syria-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group of the People’s Assembly of the Syrian Arab Republic Lucy Iskenian, the parliament’s press service reported.

Welcoming the guests, the RA NA President highlighted the historical brotherhood with friendly Syria and the availability of multi-polar ties, underlining the practical role of the Syrian Armenian community.

Touching upon the presence of the deputies of the Armenian origin in the parliament of Syria, Alen Simonyan welcomed their involvement also in the Friendship Group with Armenia.

Thanking the RA NA President for the warm reception, the Head of the Syria-Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group conveyed to Alen Simonyan the address of the Speaker of the People’s Assembly of the Syrian Arab Republic Hammouda Sabbagh, which reaffirmed the mutual trust and cooperation formed between the parliaments.

The parties touched upon the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Armenia and Syria, in this context stressing the implementation of the joint programmes of the parliaments of the two countries. Both sides recorded the inter-parliamentary cooperation in strengthening of the bases of the mutually beneficial cooperation.

At the meeting the situation in the region, in the post-war Artsakh, as well as the mission carried out by the Armenian peacekeepers in Syria were referred to.

At the end of the meeting the Syrian colleagues remembered the popular truth spread in their country that we answer to the faithfulness with faithfulness, underscoring that it has appeared as a result of the peace and mutual trust of the Armenians and Syrians.

90 beneficiaries participated in the IT trainings conducted in the Educational Complex for Children with Hearing Disorders

The With You charitable organisation accomplished their goal of ensuring the socio-economic stability of displaced youth with disabilities under Covid-19 through the provision of IT professional knowledge project as part of the European Union-funded and People in Need-implemented EU COVID-19 Solidarity Programme for the Eastern Partnership regional programme.

90 representatives from the vulnerable groups affected by Covid-19 (including sufferers from the Nagorno-Karabakh war, displaced young people, children with hearing impairments and family members of those with hearing impairments) participated in the IT trainings conducted in the Yerevan Educational Complex for Children with Hearing Disorders state non-profit organization to gain knowledge and skills on 3D modeling, computer literacy and HTML programming.

The trainings were conducted in three rounds with three parallel groups (10 participants each) over a three-month period. In total, 90 beneficiaries took part in the project, 30 of whom participated in 3D modelling, 30 in computer literacy and 30 in HTML programming classes. Fifteen of those participants from more distant regions were provided with food and overnight accommodation.

Three of the beneficiaries already work in the field of IT, and 45 beneficiaries are continuing their education in the field. Nine of best students from the project (one student in each group) were awarded laptops.

In order to ensure the sustainability of the project, a request was submitted to the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport for further financial support. If the request is accepted, additional funds will be invested in the educational complex for the continuation of the project.

Lusine Babayan, the director of the Yerevan Educational Complex for Children with Hearing Disorders highly appreciates the multidimensional cooperation acquired within the scope of the project. It has given the school the opportunity to provide targeted and timely assistance to the vulnerable groups affected by Covid-19 and to put an emphasis on sustainability to promote the continuation of support.

The closing event of the project took place on April 13th at the Yerevan Educational Complex for Children with Hearing Disorders with the participation of People in Need and MESCS, the students of the short-term program, IT companies and staff of the educational complex. The students of the training presented their work and expressed their impressions. The organisers also received feedback from the participants about how best to improve the training moving forward.

ArmInfo.The delegation of Iraqi Kurdistan took part in the commemoration ceremonies of the Armenian Genocide victims in Yerevan.  

According to the press service  of the ARF "Dashnaktsutyun", head of the Kurdistan delegation of the Kurdish-Armenian Friendship group Hemin Rasha,  leader of the  Patriotic Union of Kurdistan party Chra Omar and  head of the Baran  (PUK) genocide organization Aram Muhammad, arrived in Yerevan to  participate in the commemoration ceremonies dedicated to the 107th  anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, on April 25, met with a member  of the ARF "Dashnaktsutyun" bureau, chairman of the "Hay Dat" Central  Committee Kiro Manoyan and MPs from the ARF faction, members of the  "Armenia-Iraq" friendship group Gegham Manukyan and Tadevos  Avetisyan.

The parties discussed the latest geopolitical developments, regional  security and issues related to the development of Armenian-Kurdish  relations. Particular attention was paid to the development of  inter-party relations, a good basis for which can be the circle of  friendship between the ARF party and the aforementioned Kurdish  organizations, which has already been formed on the platform of the  Socialist International. 

Armenian Healthcare Ministry reports 9 new cases of COVID-19

YEREVAN, APRIL 22, ARMENPRESS. 9 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed over the last 24 hours, bringing the cumulative total number of confirmed cases to 422,814, the Armenian Healthcare Ministry said.

No new deaths were recorded and the death toll remained 8,622.

18 people recovered (total recoveries: 410,535).

3,123 tests were administered (total tests: 3,029,751).

As of April 22 the number of active cases stood at 1,974.

Azerbaijani troops fully withdrawn to initial positions near Seysulan, Artsakh

The Azerbaijani troops that intruded in to the neutral zone of the line of contact near the settlement of Seysulan in the Martakert region have returned to the positions occupied before the incident, Artsakh’s InfoCenter reports.

In On April 15 the enemy had advanced a certain amount of manpower, trying to improve its position in the neutral zone.

In the evening of the same day, as a result of negotiations conducted by the Russian peacekeeping contingent deployed in Artsakh, the Azerbaijani troops agreed to return to their starting positions.

At this moment the Azerbaijani side has fully returned to its positions occupied before the above-mentioned incident. The operative-tactical situation in other parts of the line of contact is calm.
