Artsakh official: Cultural monuments’ removal from Berdzor, Aghavno, Sus will be completed next week

Armenia – Aug 13 2022

The removal of Armenian cultural monuments from Berdzor, Aghavno, and Sus settlements, which will be handed over to Azerbaijan's control on August 25, will be completed in the next week. Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Lernik Hovhannisyan informed Armenian News-NEWS.am about this.

"According to the civil defense plan, when the decision was made that the population [in the aforesaid settlements] should be evacuated, naturally the monuments as well the book fund—the libraries, the museum exhibits—[also] had to be removed," Hovhannisyan said, in particular.

According to the deputy minister, the Armenian monuments and cross-stones in the aforementioned communities have been moved to the Artsakh capital Stepanakert, there is already an agreement with the Artsakh Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church that some of them will be placed in the park being built near the St. Hovhannes (John) Church in Stepanakert, and the others—in the area adjacent to the St. Hakob (Jacob) Church.

"There is a proposal to place them in the park of the newly constructed building of the Artsakh State University. There are other proposals that we will consider after moving them all," Hovhannisyan added.

Reflecting on the fact that Azerbaijan has already announced the plan of turning the Holy Ascension Church in Berdzor town into a mosque, Lernik Hovhannisyan noted that they have repeatedly appealed in this regard to international organizations, but the latter’s respective responses are only statements.

"We don't see concrete practical steps—except for words. And as for the Holy Ascension Church in Berdzor and the Church of the Holy Martyrs in Aghavno [village], materials about their future fate are already circulating in the Azerbaijani media. And specifically, the project of turning the Holy Ascension Church of Berdzor into a mosque was chosen by a non-governmental organization, which I do not rule out will become the official policy of Azerbaijan," said Hovhannisyan.

Artsakh Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Hayk Khanumyan had informed the Armenian residents of Aghavno and Berdzor that they had to leave their homes by August 25.

Wording of agreement on Nagorno-Karabakh gives rise to conflict escalation

Caucasian Knot

By having built a section of the road bypassing the Lachin Corridor, Azerbaijan, did not violate the terms of the agreement on Nagorno-Karabakh, while the escalation of the Karabakh conflict was provoked by the Armenian party, Russian and Azerbaijani analysts have pointed out. Armenian authorities are trying to circumvent the agreements, taking advantage of the ambiguous wording thereof, Armenian political scientists have pointed out.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on August 3, Baku announced the conduct of the "Retribution" operation in Karabakh after the death of an Azerbaijani soldier. The Azerbaijani Army has occupied the Sarybaba heights in the Shusha District and Gyrkhgyz heights in the Khodjaly District; and on August 6, it took control over the strategic height of Buzdukh.

The conflict escalation occurred amid the construction of an alternative road to the Lachin Corridor, built according to the Aliev-Pashinyan-Putin agreement.

Alexei Malashenko, an economist, believes that it was an Armenia's military provocation. He is sure that the Lachin Corridor is "the Azerbaijan's territory."

Mekhman Aliev, the director of the "Turan" News Agency, thinks that Armenia's claims are unjustified. According to his version, Baku "continues ensuring the security of Armenia's transport communication with the part of Karabakh, where the Armenian population lives."

In the opinion of Suren Surenyants, a political analyst, the tripartite agreement contains some unclear wordings.

"Russia deliberately compiled it with contradictions. For example, one of the points says about the need to withdraw Armenian armed units. A question arises: does this apply to Armenia's units or the units by ethnicity?" he has asked.

Ombudsperson: Azeri official confirms Artsakh Armenians’ right to life is not guaranteed

Panorama
Armenia – Aug 5 2022

Azerbaijani lawmaker Gudrat Hasanguliyev has confessed about Azerbaijan’s state policy aimed at the ethnic cleansing of the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh), Armenian Human Rights Defender Kristine Grigoryan said in a statement posted on social media on Friday.

In particular, he stated that “Armenia should put an end to its territorial ambitions towards Azerbaijan and stop supporting the bloody separatism of Karabakh. Until this is not done, we should not recognize their (the population of Nagorno-Karabakh) right to life in peace”. The deputy added that under the current situation, it is not possible for Armenians to live in Azerbaijan.

Another Azeri deputy, Fazil Mustafaev, echoing his colleague, also has directly threatened the physical existence of the Artsakh people, the ombudsperson said.

“In reality, the examples and proves of the Azerbaijani policy of ethnic hatred and ethnic cleansing of Armenians are numerous, however, it is striking that the high-level officials representing the Azerbaijani leadership are making these announcements in the context of the provocations carried out by their armed forces in recent days, as a result of which two Armenian servicemen were killed and 19 others were injured,” Grigoryan stressed.

“It is a fact the right to life of the peaceful population of Nagorno-Karabakh is not guaranteed, and the Azerbaijani official is directly confirming that.

“I have shared this information with my international interlocutors as well as with the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD), which in the coming days will review Azerbaijan's periodic report on the implementation of the UN International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination,” reads the statement.

Newspaper: Why Armenia judge who had late filmmaker arrested submits petition to leave judges’ union?

NEWS.am
Armenia –

YEREVAN. – Zhoghovurd newspaper of Armenia writes: Judge Arusyak Aleksanyan, who had [the late film] producer Armen Grigoryan arrested by her decision, submitted a petition yesterday to leave the Union of Judges, but did not note any reason [for this].

Details have become known to Zhoghovurd daily about the reasons for this move by Judge Aleksanyan. In particular, she left the Union of Judges because she has become offended by and upset with her colleagues. The thing is that after the death of Armen Grigoryan [in the courtroom during his trial], the activists publicized a photo on their social media pages and subjected the judge to harsh insulting criticism because she was the judge who sent Grigoryan to arrest. The judge was saddened that the [aforesaid] union [of judges] did not show her any support, so her staying in the union is pointless.

What is noteworthy is that the judge was heavily criticized also in the [Armenian] judicial system for the arrest of Armen Grigoryan and the interview she gave to the media. There were rumors in the [Armenian judicial] system that it would have been better if she remained silent rather than expressed such an opinion. And what had the judge said? She noted that she deeply sympathizes with the relatives [of Armen Grigoryan], and the only thing she is sorry for is that a person died.
