Media Advocate: Police again used against journalist and media outlet

Panorama, Armenia
July 1 2020

Media Advocate initiative reacted to the recent incident involving the editor-in-chief of Ankakh.com media outlet. Below is a statement issued by the initiative on Wednesday.

“Ankakh.com editor-in-chief Varduhi Ishkhanyan wrote on her Facebook page: “I was recently called by the criminal police department and very politely invited to the police to provide an explanation about my post on Jhangiryan. I of course refused noting that if they are really interested in revealing election fraudsters, they should apply to the CEC (Central Electoral Commission) and demand the data of the opposition proxies of 1995-1996, members of the commissions, opposition parliamentary candidates and investigate the cases in order to find the culprits.”

Media Advocate initiative states that the police is once again used against a media outlet and a journalist, and an attempt is being made to stand against freedom of speech again, to restrict the professional work of the media.

We urge to stop this vicious practice, to pursue the detection of physical and cyber attacks against the media, instead of inviting journalists to the police for their publications.”

‘We should protect democracy from some forces’ – Pashinyan

YEREVAN, JUNE 25, ARMENPRESS. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan believes that the leadership must protect democracy from some forces.

“Just a month ago, one of the most famous international organizations, which follows the situation of freedoms, reported that throughout the history of its reports Armenia recorded the highest two-year progress in democracy, human rights and freedom of speech. In general, this is the recording of all organizations around the world”, the PM said in the Parliament during the debate of the 2019 state budget performance annual report.

Commenting on the criticisms of opposition lawmakers according to which the leadership is limiting the freedom of speech, the PM proposed to see what is the level of freedom of speech in Armenia and how it is used. He reminded that the government lifted the restrictions related to the freedom of speech during the coronavirus-related state of emergency taking into account the criticism of the opposition, the calls of the Ombudsman and etc. “And look, what started after that? And one of the key reasons of this situation is this. We made this wrong, we have lifted that restrictions by listening to your calls and that of the democratic structures. We are not going to refuse from media freedom, freedom of social networks, but we are not refusing to voice that”, he said.

The PM said the parties, media outlets, NGOs in Armenia should be transparent by 100% so that the previous officials will not finance fake batallions and other media outlets with their robbed money for running a hybrid war against the Armenian people.

“Are you protecting democracy from us? No, we must protect democracy from some forces because democracy is not permissiveness”, the PM said addressing the opposition forces.

Armenian President said something that hasn’t been said by any other head of state – la Repubblica

YEREVAN, JUNE 18, ARMENPRESS. The Italian daily la Repubblica in an article published on June 16 titled The Station of the Future touched upon the current challenges and difficulties caused by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the new way of life imposed on societies and in this context also presented the opinion of Armenian President Armen Sarkissian over the matter, the Armenian President’s Office told Armenpress.

Author of the article Riccardo Luna writes that an economic decline is expected around the world, the governments are developing new systems of pensions and fees aimed at helping the vulnerable groups and the unemployed. “It seems we are helpless”, he writes, adding that he was impressed to listen to the remarks by the Armenian President on the current situation.

“The President of Armenia is a former physician, during his young age he has been one of those programmers thanks to whom Tetris game had a worldwide success. He has also served as Armenia’s Ambassador in London for many years and eventually he became the President of Armenia, a small Caucasian Republic with a population of three million and an active, but a very small economy”, the author says. “Armen Sarkissian says this crisis is the accelerator of the future that the state digital governance can change the country’s acting style, for instance, the remote learning and healthcare will gradually have a higher demand, that we should not stop the fight against the climate change. The Armenian President said something which hasn’t been stated by any other head of state, something that no one says, and the meaning of which is the exact opposite to the phrase “you are helpless”. It’s meaning is that “You can. Start swimming”. In short, Armen Sarkissian said that now the governments should deal with contributing to the creation of jobs, rather than subsidizing the dying industries. Startups, but not only. New enterprises. Action is needed. Go ahead. Pull back the clouds”.

Azerbaijani press: Azerbaijani MFA: Armenia is left alone in context of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement

  •

  • POLITICS

In the context of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement, Armenia is left alone, said Leyla Abdullayeva, spokesperson for Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The spokesperson made the remarks answering the media question on the statement by the Armenian Foreign Ministry regarding the former Shaumyan region of Azerbaijan.

The statement by the Armenian Foreign Ministry on the alleged occupation of the former Shahumyan region of Azerbaijan clearly demonstrates that the groundless territorial claims of Armenia against Azerbaijan are not limited to the Nagorno-Karabakh region and the seven adjacent regions of Azerbaijan, which are currently under occupation of the armed forces of Armenia, noted Abdullayeva.

“The former Shaumyan region of Azerbaijan was first created in 1930 in the form of an administrative unit, that is, the Shaumyan rural region, which included the territories of the former Ganja district, mainly inhabited by Armenians. This area has never been part of the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region,” the spokesperson said.  “In 1991, by the decision of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan, it was abolished and included in the Kasim-Ismailov region, and later, its historical name of Goranboy was returned to the area.”

The fact that the MFA of Armenia accuses Azerbaijan of occupying its own internationally recognized territories equally causes laughter and, to say the least, bewilderment, Abdullayeva stressed.

“We recall that in the 30th paragraph of the decision of the European Court of Human Rights regarding the case “Sargsyan v. Azerbaijan” of 2015 the Court noted that the former Shaumyan region (Goranboy) “was declared by the NKR as part of its territory …”. Having considered the evidences presented, the Court in paragraphs 134 and 139 determined that the region is an internationally recognized territory of Azerbaijan and thus rejecting Armenia’s claims.”

“This statement by the MFA of Armenia, aimed at distracting the international community from the fact that it is Armenia that bears full responsibility for the military occupation of the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan and the adjacent areas, and the violation of the fundamental rights of hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis forcibly expelled from these territories, is a manifestation of dirty practice of falsification of facts by Armenia,” she said.

The spokesperson added that this statement of the occupying country once again demonstrated to the whole world how, in fact, the Armenian leadership is preparing its population for peace.

“In general, I would like to note that the latest statements by the MFA are aimed at escalating the already tense situation. It is difficult to say whether they are doing it consciously or from hopelessness, since today it is obvious that in the context of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement, Armenia is left alone. There is not a single country in the world who not only support, but even sympathize with the position of the Armenian side.

“Perhaps the difficult internal political situation in the country puts pressure on the latest statements and comments by the Armenian Foreign Ministry, and in this way they want to show their toughness. Although it would be more logical to sit down with us at the table and conclude negotiations in accordance with the proposals that have been repeatedly discussed at all levels,” Abdullayeva concluded.
