Schiff introduces genocide bill
Bill to make U.S. government recognize Armenian genocide has
bipartisan support from 50 congressmen.
By Robert Chacon, The Leader
GLENDALE — Rep. Adam Schiff introduced a resolution to Congress
on Tuesday, with bipartisan support from more than 50 congressmen,
that would require the government to recognize the Armenian genocide.
“I hope this year we can make the recognition happen,” Schiff said.
“It has been 90 years. If not now, when?”
For two years, Schiff has fought for U.S. recognition of the genocide,
in which more than 1.5 million Armenians were killed by the Ottoman
Empire beginning in 1916. The resolution would also require the
U.S. president to acknowledge the genocide each year on the date of
its anniversary.
The bill was cosponsored by representatives George Radanovich
(R-Mariposa), Joe Knollenberg (R-Mich.) and Frank Pallone (D-N.J.).
Introducing the new resolution is the second step Schiff has taken in
as many weeks, and underlines his efforts during the past two years
regarding the issue.
Last week, Schiff announced that a forthcoming bill requiring the
government to acknowledge the genocide was guaranteed a hearing
by House International Relations Committee Chairman Henry Hyde,
increasing the its chances at becoming law.
He is still working on the language to that bill, which he will
introduce to the House of Representatives in the near future,
Schiff said.
His efforts are being praised by local Armenian activists.
“Being the 90th anniversary, you have to realize that as an
Armenian-American, this is something that has been carried on from
generation to generation,” said Armond Agakhani, president of the
Armenian-American Chamber of Commerce based in Glendale. “Most of
the world recognizes the genocide, but it’s been kind of a struggle
to get our own government to recognize it.”
Tuesday’s introduction received substantial bipartisan support,
a positive indication, said Armen Carapetian, government relations
director for the Armenian National Committee of America Western
Region. More than 50 members of Congress, democrats and republicans,
joined to support the resolution, including Rep. David Dreier.
“This is one of the strongest showings that this sort of resolution
has received,” Carapetian said.
Support for the resolution will increase as it makes its way through
congress, Schiff said.

Ancient Mediterranean Recipe Brought To Life In NYC
Ancient Mediterranean Recipe Brought To Life In NYC
PR Leap (press release), CA
June 15 2005
(PRLEAP.COM) New York City, NY – Salt & Vinegar, Inc. a new specialty
food company – introduces a line of gourmet pickled vegetables rooted
in an ancient, Mediterranean family recipe. Salt & Vinegar, Inc. has
preserved the flavor of this centuries-old recipe while offering a
fresh, modern look to pickled vegetables.
The company’s product line includes pickled mixed vegetables, pickled
green beans and pickled carrots. Each jar contains a delightful
combination of crisp and crunchy vegetables with a robust,
Mediterranean flavor. Using the freshest of ingredients, their
vegetables are hand-packed and simply preserved in a distinct brine
of salt and vinegar and garnished with fresh dill, garlic and hot
peppers.
In addition, Salt & Vinegar delivers an upscale, modern design to
their packaging rather than the outdated look of most pickled
vegetables. Their products are presented in a glass jar with a
signature silver lid. With this fresh new look and delicious
Mediterranean taste, Salt & Vinegar pickled vegetables make a great
gift or addition to a gourmet gift basket along with cheeses,
spreads, pates and specialty meats.
Salt & Vinegar, Inc. was founded by New York City residents David and
Melanie Koroghlian. The brother and sister team were inspired by a
classic Mediterranean family recipe that had been handed-down from
generation to generation. The recipe and tradition of pickling
vegetables comes from their family in Armenia. “Traditionally,
pickled vegetables were served as part of appetizers in Armenian
families. We have fond memories of our parents making pickled
vegetables every fall just in time to be enjoyed during the
holidays,” says co-founder Melanie. “Today, we have expanded our
horizons and enjoy this delicious food anytime – as an appetizer,
with salads or even as a healthy snack right out of the jar.”
Enjoyed by family and friends over the years, the pair would often
receive requests for their family’s pickled vegetables. In 2004, with
the encouragement of family and friends and the desire to work
together, David and Melanie set off with their family recipe and Salt
& Vinegar, Inc. was born.
“We are excited to introduce our product line and offer a variety of
pickled vegetables,” says David. “As our company grows, we look
forward to expanding our line to include such unique varieties as
pickled asparagus, pickled green tomatoes and a complete line of
organic pickled vegetables. We ultimately envision a collection of
premium, Mediterranean-style specialty food products, each delivered
in unique packaging using the finest ingredients to create classic
Mediterranean flavors.”
The launch of Salt & Vinegar, Inc. comes at a time when the specialty
food industry is embracing Mediterranean cuisine. In the May 2005
issue of The Gourmet Retailer, the trade journal highlights
Mediterranean fare and describes this new food trend as… “Cuisine of
the Year…with the familiar-yet-exotic flavors of Mediterranean
cuisine, it seems inevitable that more products will appear on the
market. Look in the U.S. first for activity in gourmet and natural
food stores, and later for a filtering down of such products to
mainstream supermarkets.”
The company’s complete line of pickled vegetables is available in 16
oz. jars at a suggested retail price of $10.25. For more information
about Salt & Vinegar, Inc. products, visit their website at

Scenario and Date Of Revolution In Armenia Are Elaborated and Decide
SCENARIO AND DATE OF REVOLUTION IN ARMENIA ARE ELABORATED
AND DECIDED IN WASHINGTON: ASHOT MANUCHARYAN
YEREVAN, JUNE 14. ARMINFO. Scenario and date of revolution in
Armenia have been elaborated and decided in Washington, stated
Leader of Armenia’s Socialistic Forces Union, Political Secretary of
Intellectuals Union Ashot Manucharyan at a press-conference in the
National press-club, Jun 14.
In his words, there is no separation of Armenia’s political field
on power and opposition; it is rather divided to both the criminal
forced its way to power and the opposition conducted itself very
carefully, out of instinct of self-preservation, as the forces are
unequal. “Feeling impunity, the pro-authoritative criminal makes a
deal with foreign powers, like “Property against debts”, had nothing
in common with people’s interests and only “insinuates” great powers
and satisfies its own interests. A group of foreign diplomats headed by
the US ambassador to Armenia and individual rich Armenians of Diaspora
play the role of coordinators of that criminal”, Manucharyan stated.
He added that it is necessary to break the existent vicious system
by means of revolution, to punish criminal, afterwards to conduct
free and democratic elections in Armenia. “Taking into account that
the USA had already stated about its intention to confirm democracy
in the post-soviet territory, the scenario of revolution is being
elaborated in Washington, and one should ask about it the American
administration and the US president George Bush, but not Aram Z.
Sargssyan or Aram Karapetyan, Manucharyan stated.
At the same time, Manucharyan noted that the native society should
be consolidated shortly to “turn the wheel back” and fulfill the
exchange of power by itself not waiting till outside forces do it.
