YEREVAN, MARCH 17, ARMENPRESS. In Yeghipatrush village of Aparan community, Aragatsotn Marz, a new multifunctional ski resort is planned to be constructed under the investment program launched by “Myler Mountain Resort” company. We talked with Tigran Harutyunyan, the founder of the “Myler Mountain Resort” project, about the idea and peculiarities of the project, the details of the investment program.

– Mr. Harutyunyan, “Myler Mountain Resort” is one of the most interesting projects of your group of companies, which is of great importance for the development of Armenia. Would you tell us about the background of your bold idea to create a ski resort?

The idea to have a ski resort in Armenia was born 25 years ago, in 1997. I was 13 years old when we created a ski “national team” with a group of young people. At that time it was very difficult to get skiing outfit and skis in Armenia. Anna Hambardzumyan, Victor Hambardzumyan’s granddaughter, brought relevant accessories from Europe, and gathered around her children actively engaged in alpine skiing in Yerevan, and almost every Sunday in winter we went to Tsakhkadzor and Aragats for skiing.

I think it was even useless to talk about the inappropriate conditions of resorts in those years: it was very difficult for us to reach the top of the mountain, because the ropeway was not in proper condition, often not working at all. There had been even such cases when we took a few liters of fuel with us and asked the locals to put the ropeway into operation. The ropeway had a small benches with one seat where we could hardly fit with skis, and it was going so slowly that we could not move due to the cold when we reached the top. But as soon as we got there, we forgot about the cold, difficulties and inconveniences, because there was a great desire and passion to learn, we loved what we did. We were all in our element.

In order to give you a better idea, at that time skiing was just going down as we could, tumbling in the snow. We were like falling snowdrifts (laughs-ed.). Then having weighty skis on our shoulders, wearing heavy winter boots we happily climbed up all the way back. It took only five minutes to ski down, but then we spent more than thirty minutes again to reach the top. There were no ski tracks either: Soviet “Buran” snow mobiles opened tracks by going up and down several times.

We went on “Ski Weekend” in Aragats. There is a building on the way from Byurakan to Amberd, which served as a base for us. There were not any infrastructures in Aragats, and we had to go up and come down in the same way. There was no other option.

It was in those years that I first had the idea that one day, whatever it is, in Armenia we should have a ski resort complying with international standards. At the beginning it was just a dream of my youth, which over the years has developed into a goal. Then, already during my student years visiting advanced sports complexes and international centers in different countries, where I skied and got acquainted with their infrastructure, I realized what it really means to have developed alpine skiing and leisure facilities, a huge stream of tourists. I realized what we were lacking, and what is the essence – what a huge potential we have, but we do not develop it.

– The new ski resort will be built in Yeghipatrush village of Aparan community, Aragatsotn Marz. Would you describe the project in detail? Why particularly there, how much has been invested, what are the development prospects for the project?

From the conceptual point of view, there are no obstacles to have a center in Armenia that meets European high standards, I am not even afraid to say, to have a center of international level. Both the geographical location and the climatic conditions of the location we have chosen allow to build a complete complex equipped with all the relevant infrastructures.

What we plan now for the first stage of the project is enough to have the most advanced and well-equipped unique center in Armenia which will help us at becoming famous in this sphere in the world.

Now our regional center is Georgia, Gudauri. “Myler” is a long-term project, and in its final stage, in 11-12 years, we can say for sure that we will compete with Sochi and we will have enough capacities to attract a large number of skiers. In the ski market, the ratio of skiers and non-skiers among all the visitors of ski resorts is 50/50.We know what we seek for and we will strive to serve 18,000 skiers a day, who will not face any inconveniences while skiing in the mountains at the same time. This means that we will be able to provide services for 36,000 visitors a day.

One of the peculiarities of this field is that the flow and number of skiers and sports fans is changing, i.e. not everyone always visits the same places to go skiing, they consistently want to change the environment and start travelling. This implies we always have a chance to attract new people, and the competitiveness will be ensured through an optimal relation between price and quality.

As for the investments: the initial phase with an investment of more than 60 million euros will be completed in the winter of 2023, and we plan to complete the whole project in 2032-2035. We plan to invest 250-300 million euros over the course of 10 years. We start with 60 million euros, of which 34 million will be invested only for the construction of ropeways, the rest to the creation of other infrastructures, artificial snowmaking systems and ski tracks. As a result, we will be ready to accept about 6,000 skiers at a time, which is currently three times the number of visitors in the high season in Armenia.

By the way, we will not focus only on winter recreation and entertainment, we will provide and offer activities relevant to all seasons.

– Mr. Harutyunyan, we are aware that international cooperations are planned for the construction of the resort. Could you please mention them?

We cooperate with “Ecosign”, a reputable and leading Canadian company with nearly 40 years of experience in this field. The company is located in one of the most famous ski resorts in the world – “Whistler”. It is specialized in the design and development of mountain resorts and has a super-professional team. “Ecosign” is the designer and concept developer, and European “PGI” company, which is also a leading and professional company at the international level, will assist us as an operator. I can say for sure that we will effectively cooperate with these two companies, as both of them are among the best in their field. As for the procurement of the ropeway, we have already concluded a contract with Austrian company “Doppelmayr”. Active construction works will begin already in May.

Because sooner or later new complexes will appear in the surrounding area, there are real opportunities to have a complete route Tsakhkadzor-Marmarik-Aghveran. This volume can already serve as the basis for the creation of a new tourist city, a claim to become an international center, and hence having a common concept is very important.

In the first phase, 250 employees will be involved in the construction work, mostly from the community, and the professional staff entirely consists of specialists with international qualifications. About1500 permanent jobs will be created upon completion of the project.

With this project, we want to contribute to the development of tourism and sports, promote new trends of leisure and entertainment, and form a culture of a healthy lifestyle. We want “Myler” to become an exemplary and reliable model of effective public-private partnership. This year we celebrate a jubilee of our group of companies and the launching of “Myler” project is also symbolic. Like all our projects, “Myler” is also aimed at creating long-lasting projects and developing a potential of Armenia.

Turkey, Armenia agree to press ahead with mending fences

ANTALYA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey and Armenia have agreed to press ahead with efforts to establish diplomatic relations “without conditions” and continue the normalization efforts that could lead to the reopening of their shared borders for trade, their foreign ministers said Saturday.

Ararat Mirzoyan met with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu, on the sidelines of a diplomacy forum near the Turkish Mediterranean city of Antalya during a rare visit to Turkey.

Mirzoyan said he welcomed Turkey’s invitation to the forum “as a positive signal” for improved relations between the two countries that have had decades of bitterness and have no diplomatic ties.

“I can say that it was a very productive and constructive meeting,” Cavusoglu said.

Turkey, a close ally of Azerbaijan, shut down its border with Armenia in 1993 in a show of solidarity with Baku, which was locked in a conflict with Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

In 2020, Turkey strongly backed Azerbaijan in the six-week conflict with Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh, which ended with a Russia-brokered peace deal that saw Azerbaijan gain control of a significant part of the region.

Turkey and Armenia also have a more than century-old hostility over the deaths of an estimated 1.5 million Armenians in massacres, deportations and forced marches that began in 1915 in Ottoman Turkey.

The two countries have appointed special representatives who have so far held two rounds of talks in Moscow and Vienna to improve ties.

It is their second attempt at reconciliation. Turkey and Armenia reached an agreement in 2009 to establish formal relations and to open their border, but the agreement was never ratified because of strong opposition from Azerbaijan.

This time around, however, Azerbaijan has given the nod for the reconciliation efforts. Cavusoglu has said that Ankara would “coordinate” the normalization process with Azerbaijan.

Cavusoglu told reporters in Antalya: “Azerbaijan is also pleased with the steps that are being taken and the normalization process between Turkey and Armenia.”

As a first step toward reconciliation, charter flights between Yerevan and Istanbul resumed earlier this year.

Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense continues disinformation campaign on border situation

YEREVAN, MARCH 8, ARMENPRESS. The Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense continues to spread disinformation on the border situation, falsely accusing the Armenian military in opening fire at Azerbaijani military positions in various sections of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, the Armenian Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

The latest disinformation from the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense was released on March 8, falsely accusing the Armenian military in opening fire at Azerbaijani positions deployed in the western section of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border in the morning of March 8.

“This information is again false. After the provocation by the Azerbaijani side in the same direction on March 7, the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border has been relatively stable and under the full control of the Armenian Armed Forces,” the Armenian Ministry of Defense said.

MFA Boston adds 35 Martin Barooshian works to its collection

BOSTON, Mass.—The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), and the Martin Barooshian Art Trust are pleased to announce that the MFA has added 35 additional pieces by Martin Barooshian (1929-2022) to its collection. The acquisition includes important woodcuts and etchings, as well as one monotype and three preparatory drawings. The MFA acquired its first work by Barooshian in 1950.

Barooshian, a Boston native, was an American surrealist painter and an exceptionally accomplished printmaker. Barooshian rose to prominence during the 1950s and 60s, but his fame waned over time. There has been resurgent interest in his artistic contributions, including the publication of a biography and catalog in 2020. The MFA’s acquisition represents a substantial step in his rediscovery.

In a New York City art world insistent on non-figurative conformity, Barooshian struck out on his own path. The resulting abstract surrealist prints and paintings, which fuse art historical, modern, and contemporary influences, are unique, singular, and increasingly considered by many to be ahead of their time. With a printmaking output spanning 60 years, Barooshian’s oeuvre incorporates a broad variety of media: woodcuts, lithographs, etchings and monotypes. His colleague and friend Willem de Kooning called Barooshian “a printing magician.”

Barooshian garnered his earliest national recognition when “discovered” by John Taylor Arms for his woodcuts, which fused traditional techniques and content with modern form and color to convey the paranoia and loss of innocence of the Atomic Age—perhaps tinged with hopefulness. Soon thereafter in 1952, the Library of Congress acquired his first major woodcut portfolio. Perhaps Barooshian’s greatest contribution to printmaking was with a method known as color viscosity printing, which dominated his output starting about 1956. During his stay at Atelier 17 in Paris, Barooshian evolved the technique, pushing its limits in order to reach his artistic vision of imagined realities and dreamscapes. By incorporating various methods including hard ground, soft ground, mezzotint, and aquatint on a single zinc plate, Barooshian created complex, polychromatic images solidifying his reputation as one of viscosity printmaking’s most important masters.

Patrick Murphy, Lia and William Poorvu Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings at the MFA, called Barooshian “a consummate printmaker, whose intriguing and oddly overlooked body of work deserves to be celebrated alongside that of mid-century contemporaries like Hayter, Helen Phillips, Fred Becker, and Gabor Peterdi.”

“This extraordinary gift includes a number of compositions in multiple impressions—state proofs showing the evolution of work on the plate, or variant inkings demonstrating the artist’s characteristic experimentation with color, as well as preparatory drawings, and will make the MFA a destination for the study of Barooshian’s prints,” said Murphy.

“The recent rediscovery of Martin’s work has been very exciting, and this honor solidifies his legacy,” said Michael Russo, curator of the Martin Barooshian Art Trust. “Martin saw this acquisition as a full-circle homecoming. When he was a boy and student, the MFA represented all of his dreams, and he fantasized that someday the MFA would have a large collection of his art. He lived to see it happen.”

Turkish press: Turkiye wants cease-fire in Ukraine to be ‘permanent, countrywide’

Rabia İclal Turan   |05.03.2022

ISTANBUL

Humanitarian cease-fire in Ukraine should be “permanent and countrywide,” the Turkish foreign minister said Saturday.

Speaking at a joint news conference with his Azerbaijani counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov in Baku, Mevlut Cavusoglu said Turkiye is monitoring the developments in Ukraine with concern.

“We want this unjust and unlawful attack to end as soon as possible. We continue to increase our efforts in this regard,” he said.

Cavusoglu also pointed out Turkiye’s efforts for the safe evacuation of Turkish citizens in Ukraine, adding that they will continue the cooperation with Azerbaijan regarding the issue.

“We also work together to deliver humanitarian aid to the people of Ukraine,” he said.

Turkiye has so far evacuated at least 11,024 citizens from Ukraine, Cavusoglu also said.

There were nearly 20,000 Turkish citizens living in Ukraine, according to Turkish officials.

Bayramov, for his part, said, a total of 9,500 Azerbaijani citizens have left Ukraine so far, with the evacuation process still underway.

He also said Azerbaijan sent medical supplies worth €5.5 million ($6 million) to Ukraine.

Normalization process between Turkiye, Armenia

Cavusoglu said there is a “full coordination between Turkiye and Azerbaijan” during the process for the normalization of Turkiye-Armenia ties.

“Our main goal is to maintain good neighborly relations in the region in line with international law,” he stated.

Bayramov said Azerbaijan supports the normalization between Turkiye and Armenia.

Baku wants “good neighborly relations to be established in the region,” he added.

The region, he said, has “new realities” following the 44-day Patriotic War, which ended nearly three-decade Armenian occupation of Azerbaijani territories.

“Azerbaijan has emphasized for many times before that it is ready to sign a cease-fire agreement with Armenia.

“We believe that despite all the difficulties, all the sufferings of the past, we can now talk about normalization,” Bayramov said.

Turkish-Armenian relations have entered a new phase after both countries appointed special representatives, which held their first meeting on Jan. 14 in Moscow.

The special representatives from Turkiye and Armenia, Serdar Kilic and Ruben Rubinyan, held their second meeting in Vienna on Feb. 24, where both sides “reiterated their agreement to continue the process without preconditions,” according to the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

At least 331 civilians have been killed and 675 others injured in Ukraine since Russia launched a war in the Eastern European country on Feb. 24, according to UN figures.

More than 1.3 million people have fled Ukraine to neighboring countries, the latest data by the UN refugee agency showed.

The Russian attacks have been met by an outcry from the international community, with the EU, UK, and US implementing a range of economic sanctions against Moscow.
