Clark’s Excellent Choice For Armenian Studies Chair

CLARK’S EXCELLENT CHOICE FOR ARMENIAN STUDIES CHAIR

TELEGRAM & GAZETTE
June 2, 2008 Monday
Massachusetts

Clark University’s choice of a Turkish-born professor, Taner Akcam,
as chairman of Armenian genocide studies is a welcome demonstration
of a firm commitment to free inquiry, academic fairness and historical
truth.

Mr. Akcam has for more than 20 years been a fearless critic of Turkish
policies toward its Kurdish minority, as well as its longstanding
denial of the Armenian genocide carried out by the Ottoman Turks. He
found political asylum in Germany and in 2002 became a visiting
professor at the University of Minnesota.

As a lecturer and author of "A Shameful Act: The Armenian Genocide and
the Question of Turkish Responsibility," Mr. Akcam has demonstrated
a courageous and lasting commitment to the pursuit of historical truth.

Equally heartening, Clark’s choice of Mr. Akcam appears to have
been undertaken for the best of reasons. That he is a Turk leading
inquiries into a most sensitive chapter of Armenian history bears a
symbolism that is lost on no one, but as Clark’s Deborah Dwork told
The Boston Globe, "Ethnic or religious identity is not crucial to
any appointment. We hire the best scholars in the pool."

Mr. Akcam told the Globe that he expects to be the target of hate
from Turkish nationalists, but his commitment to accurately teaching
the history of relations between Turkey and her ethnic minorities
presents Clark students, and indeed the world, with valuable learning
opportunities.

Armenia Can Rescue Azerbaijan From Disappearance

ARMENIA CAN RESCUE AZERBAIJAN FROM DISAPPEARANCE

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ In twenty years Azerbaijan can be one of the
bleakest places on earth when its oil is depleted, Jack Manuelian
writes in "Azerbaijan’s Future Is Very Bleak" article received by
PanARMENIAN.Net.

"Moreover, according to Michael L. Ross, associate professor of
Political Science at the University of California, Los Angeles,
"oil wealth often wreaks havoc on a country’s economy and politics,
makes it easier for insurgents to fund their rebellions, and aggravates
ethnic grievances."

Mr. Ross notes that "The oil booms of the 1970s brought great wealth
– and later great anguish – to many petroleum-rich countries in the
developing world.

In the 1970s, oil-producing states enjoyed fast economic growth. But
in the following three decades, many suffered crushing debt, high
unemployment, and sluggish or declining economies. At least half of the
members of OPEC (the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries)
were poorer in 2005 than they had been 30 years earlier. Oil-rich
countries that once held great promise, such as Algeria and Nigeria,
have unraveled as a result of decades of internal conflict.

These states were plagued by the so-called oil curse."

In order to avoid oil curse and bleak kismet, Azerbaijan has to made
peace and cooperate with the Armenians and let Karabakh be free,
then Armenians readily will help Azerbaijan to have a bright future.

Azerbaijan should understand that there is no going back for Armenians
to old structures and that Armenians of Karabakh if it comes to
the worst scenario will opt for Russian citizenship rather to an
Azerbaijani one. Other minorities in Azerbaijan will start asking
for Russian citizenship and Azerbaijan will disappear from the map
of the Caucasus.

As soon as Azerbaijan wises up it is better for it!" the article says.

Deaths of S Clemente family has friend asking, Did somebody flip out

Orange County Register, CA
May 29 2008

Deaths of San Clemente family has friend asking, ‘Did somebody flip out?’

Doting, devout and protective family, found wearing all black.

By VIK JOLLY and SALVADOR HERNANDEZ
The Orange County Register

The inseparable twin sisters. The doting parents. A cautious family.

Four days after five members of a San Clemente family were discovered
dead — all dressed in black — a portrait of a religious, loving but
overprotective clan began to emerge through interviews with those who
knew the Ucars.

The Turkish Armenian family quietly went on with its life inside a
gated neighborhood overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

But the gruesome discovery of decomposing bodies found by authorities
called by a relative who shattered a window at the family’s Sea Point
Estates home to gain entry has reverberated from Orange County to
Istanbul.

Manas, 58, and Margrit Ucar, 48, were immigrants from Turkey, whose
ancestors perished in the mass killings of Armenians upon the breakup
of the Ottoman Empire in the early 1900s.

Authorities on Wednesday said the couple was found on the floor near a
closet of their home with gunshot wounds. Two guns were found near
their bodies. One of the guns was registered to Margrit Ucar, and
investigators are still looking for records on the second gun, Orange
County Sheriff’s Lt. Erin Guidice said.

The Ucars’ twin daughters, Margo and Grace, both 21, were found lying
in a bed in the first floor bedroom, Guidice said. Margrit Ucar’s
mother, Fransuhi Kesisoglu, 72, was sitting in a chaise lounge in the
room.

No bullet wounds were found on the other three bodies, nor has a cause
of death been determined, Guidice said. Toxicology results are due in
about six weeks. Officials say they do not believe any outsiders are
involved in the incident that has left the five dead.

Authorities wouldn’t say if there was a note left behind.

Meanwhile, interviews showed that the twin Ucar sisters took all their
classes together at San Clemente High School. They were not kids who
skated or hung around playing with other children in their hilly
neighborhood, but the twins and their mother did swim frequently at
the community pool.

Manas Ucar, a consulting engineer and a former assistant professor at
Syracuse University who came to the states in the 70s, proudly spoke
of his daughters going to medical school. Their mother earned her
medical degree from Turkey but could not practice in the states.

The sisters graduated high school in 2004. According to a UC San Diego
spokeswoman the twins finished the requirements for a bachelor’s
degree in biology ahead of schedule in January.

Manas Ucar was described by one friend of the family as an extrovert
who loved to chat.

Most of all, he and his wife doted on their daughters, acquaintances
said. Margrit Ucar had lunch almost daily with the twins when they
were in elementary school. The family bought or rented a house in San
Diego when the twins left for medical school.

Laguna Niguel resident Peggy Rosen said her husband, an attorney,
cross-examined Manas Ucar during a civil trial at which Ucar was an
accident-reconstruction expert for the defense more than a decade ago
and their families became close.

`They adored their children and each other,’ Rosen said in an
e-mail. `Manas was very vivacious and fun loving. He was a brilliant
man. . . a very kind man. He worked very hard for his family.’

Margrit, Rosen said, was more reserved. A devout Christian, she talked
about Jesus and prayed a lot, she said.

`This has been weighing on me,’ said Rosen, 55, who works in her
husband’s law office and does interior design. `I have been thinking
about this and wondering who did this. Did somebody flip out? The
young girls, they had their whole life ahead of them.’

Margrit ran a jewelry boutique at Fashion Island for a few
years. Rosen recalled the Ucars telling them that she, at times,
carried a gun for protection.

The cordial Ucar family also was very private and Sea Point neighbors
didn’t see a whole lot of them.

"We had a hard time to get (the twins) to play,’ said Tami Adams, 50,
who lives in the neighborhood.

Antranik Zorayan, a local community leader, said the family came to
worship at St. Mary Armenian Church in Costa Mesa on major
holidays. Zorayan said the news had traveled to Istanbul, where he
spoke with his brother about it.

The community awaits the outcome of the investigation but he doesn’t
believe that the deaths are a murder suicide, Zorayan said.

`At this time I am not convinced,’ he said. `I can’t explain the
feelings I have.’

Serzh Sargsyan: Victories Are Not Gifted

SERZH SARGSYAN: VICTORIES ARE NOT GIFTED

PanARMENIAN.Net
29.05.2008 13:43 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan issued a
congratulatory address on occasion of the First Republic Day.

The presidential message says in part,

"90 years ago the dream of our people came true.

Thanks to selflessness of brave sons of the Armenian nation, exploits
in heroic battles in Sardarapat, Bash-Aparan and Karakilisa, we
restored our statehood.

Each Armenian remembers those heroes, who defeated the enemy in the
fight for independence of our country.

Independence and victories are never gifted. During two years of
existence, the First Republic of Armenia condensed inspiration, grief
and losses, touching us three historical lessons. The first is the
importance of national unity. Born 90 years ago, our state system was
the result of national unity. Today, we should struggle to preserve
the spirit of unity which helped us to survive in 1918. The second
is irreplaceability of statehood. No other structure can replace a
state system; no ideology can be higher than state interests. If our
country weakens, we lose. The third is the confidence that we can
overcome all difficulties our country faces.

Today, Armenia enters a period which is extremely important for all its
citizens. We should strengthen our republic and ensure development of
political, economic, scientific and cultural life. Our country has a
brilliant future but not only leaders are responsible for it. Each
son of our nation should make his contribution for the glory of
Armenia. To be a citizen of the Republic of Armenia is an honor;
to serve our nation is the supreme mission."

Everybody Responsible for Strained Atmosphere in Country

EVERYBODY RESPONSIBLE FOR STRAINED ATMOSPHERE IN COUNTRY, HRANT
MARGARIAN SAYS

Y EREVAN, MAY 27, NOYAN TAPAN. Everybody is responsible for the strained
atmosphere in the country in recent period, ARF Bureau member Hrant
Margarian said at the May 27 press conference. "We did our best to
prevent the confrontation. Unfortunatelly, it happened, but we are not
trying to make it a subject of political speculation because it was a
misfortune for our statehood and nation," H. Margarian added. In his
opinion, one way to get out of the current situation is Armenian
intellectuals’ impartial assessment of recent events. "We need to
create a moral climate in which every person will feel responsible for
his attitide and behavior," he noted. Describing today’s atmpsphere, he
said that a group of aggressive press ready to sqabble has formed.

H. Margarian expressed an opinion that what has happened in Armenia
recently is an Armenian National Movement (ANM) rather than a popular
movement. "Every force, organizaton, even person permitted itself to
speak on behalf of the people. However, if a person uses the word
"people", it does not mean that his direction is popular," he pointed
out.

He considered dialog as an important step for forming a culture of
political struggle. "Some already noticeable practical steps should
become more real, with more favorable conditions for a dialog to be
created," H. Margarian said.

Responding to a question, the ARF Bureau member said that they served
as a support for neither Robert Kocharian nor Serge Sargsian. "The ARF
has its direction and it cooperates with the authorities based on its
convictions and requirements," H. Margarian stated, adding that the ARF
may become a support for the people and statehood.

EU concerned about slow reform in Turkey

EU concerned about slow reform in Turkey
23.05.2008 15:05 GMT+04:00

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The European Commission warned
membership-hopeful Turkey yesterday not to slip back
in its reform process, saying it could not afford
-another wasted year.-

Speaking in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, EU
Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn said the EU
executive body was concerned about the slow pace of
reform in Turkey.

Turkey started EU accession talks in 2005 but they
have been held back by slow progress in EU-linked
reforms, the impact of the unresolved Cyprus dispute,
and the reluctance of some EU members, such as France
and Austria, to see Turkey join.

Rehn noted concerns about moves by Turkey’s chief
prosecutor to shut down the ruling Justice and
Development Party (AKP), and ban Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan and President Abdullah Gul from
politics for alleged Islamist subversion.

Intervening in a case that threatens Turkey’s bid to
join the EU, the European Parliament called for
constitutional amendments that would prevent Turkish
courts from outlawing democratically elected parties.

Turkey needs to observe European standards, the
Parliament said in a motion passed by lawmakers
467-62. It criticized an attempt by Turkish
prosecutors to get the Constitutional Court to ban
Erdogan’s party a year after his re-election.

-Closing down a political party is not and cannot be
business as usual,- Rehn, the EU’s pointman for the
entry talks, told the Parliament. -It cannot be taken
lightly in a European democracy.-

The Parliament called on Turkey -to bring the
constitution into line- with European principles on
courts’ oversight of political parties.

The warning was coupled with a separate EU
announcement that the entry negotiations will inch
ahead next month, in a show of support for Erdogan in
his bid to anchor Turkey among the western
democracies.

In the Constitutional Court case that aims to bring
Erdogan down, prosecutors argue that the prime
minister’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) is
subverting the religious freedoms that date back to
the founding of modern Turkey in, the Turkish Daily
News reports.
