Gariy Ambartsumyan said he was thrilled when he learned an Armenian BBQ food truck was opening for business not far from his Noblesville home.

“It’s not like you can go just anywhere and get Armenian,” said Ambartsumyan, a 45-year-old truck driver of Armenian descent.

Ambartsumyan has become a regular at DavAni Armenian BBQ, open for takeout or delivery in a parking lot at 105 W. Carmel Dr. and laying claim to being the only takeout restaurant specializing in Armenian cuisine in the state. Armen Abrahamyan, a native of Armenia, opened the business in October and is the head chef. He operates the food truck, with a business model that more closely resembles a takeout restaurant, with help from his family, including his wife Seda Arzumanyan.

Customers have been receptive to DavAni’s distinctive offerings.

“So far, we’ve received a lot of positive feedback about our Armenian BBQ,” Arzumanyan said. “Many people are not familiar with Armenian cuisine and culture, but as they try our food, they fall in love with the flavors and unique tastes.”

Abrahamyan learned to prepare Armenian dishes at a young age. When he moved to Indiana six years ago, he noticed there was a scarcity of Armenian cuisine offered locally. He catered for small events and gatherings before opening DavAni – which offers hefty portions of pork, lamb, chicken and beef kebabs and wraps, along with sides including grilled vegetable salad, tahini sauce and hummus – in the fall.

“For Armen, cooking Armenian BBQ and kebab is more than just a job. It’s a passion that he loves to share with the people of Indiana,” Arzumanyan said.

Cuisine in Armenia, a nation of less than 3 million people in the mountainous Caucasus region between Asia and Europe, is defined by a blend of flavors and ingredients that reflect the country’s rich history and cultural influences.

The meat, often cut into large chunks, is marinated in a mixture of herbs and spices for several hours before Armen cooks it to just the right tenderness in the truck, sometimes chatting with customers as he does his work. Visitors to DavAni are liable to catch a whiff of the aroma of barbecued meats even before noticing the food truck’s bright red paint scheme.

DavAni is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays. Wraps start at $9.50, BBQ kebabs start at $11.50, and plates including sides range from $16 to $20. Customers can order at the window, utilize DoorDash or UberEats, or order ahead online for takeout at davanibbq.com.

Ambartsumyan and his wife, Elena, get food from DavAni most Saturdays, usually through DoorDash, though sometimes Gariy parks his big rig in a nearby parking lot to pick up his meals in-person. His favorite is the beef lula kebab, and he raves about Abrahamyan’s way of preparing DavAni’s meats.

“No one can make it the way Armen does,” Ambartsumyan said. “He knows how to make it right. Everything’s perfect.”

GdS: Milan interested in Armenian forward drawing Kvaratskhelia comparisons

AC Milan are interested in FC Krasnodar forward Eduard Spertsyan who is drawing comparisons with Kvara Kvaratskhelia, a report claims.

According to a report from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Spertsyan is the big hope of the Armenian national team while he has also been impressing with Krasnodar too having amassed 11 goals and 10 assists in 27 games this season.

He is like Kvara in role as he currently plays in a 4-2-3-1 as the attacking midfielder behind the striker but also operates wide on the left in a 4-3-3. He is quick, loves dribbling, is able to assist and his left foot is almost as good as his favoured right.

There are clubs in Spain who seem keen on landing the 22-year-old, but Marseille are interested and sources in Russia have said that Milan are also following him and have offered €8m despite the fact there is currently an asking price of €12m that seems destined to rise.

YEREVAN, MARCH 22, ARMENPRESS. Armenia does not negotiate on the issue of installing a checkpoint in the Lachin corridor, ARMENPRESS reports, Armenian FM Ararat Mirzoyan said during parliament-Cabinet Q&A session.

“Armenia considers that the negotiations on the Lachin Corridor and its regime have long been completed and the regulations were included in the document signed by the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia on November 9, 2020. It says that the Lachin Corridor remains under the control of Russian peacekeepers and Azerbaijan ensures unhindered two-way traffic,” Mirzoyan noted.

According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, it is a recorded agreement, and Armenia should already have doubts about the expediency of further negotiations.

“In other words, what is the point of reaching agreements on other issues if they will definitely be violated by Azerbaijan after some time? No, we are not negotiating on establishing an Azerbaijani checkpoint in the Lachin corridor,” Mirzoyan stated.

Asbarez: Ferrahian School Officially Inaugurates New Campus

Western Prelate Bishop Torkom Donoyan along with Ferrahian Principal Sossi Shanlian and Trustee chairman Vahe Benlian cut the ribbon of the new school

$1.25 Million Raised During the Evening’s Festivities

BY GARO HOVANISSIAN

Oh, what a memorable night it was! On Saturday, March 18, more than 550 friends and supporters of the Holy Martyrs Ferrahian High School, Cabayan Elementary and Pilavjian Preschool attended the school’s ribbon-cutting ceremony and gala.  The sold-out event was a celebration not only of the recent expansion of the Encino campus, but of the great success and momentum enjoyed by the school.  And with evening donations exceeding $1.25 million, along with a previous donation of $5 million, the future is as bright as ever.

Rep, Brad Sherman presents a flag flown over the Capitol LA City Council President Paul Krekorian with fellow Councilmembers Nithya Raman and John Lee

The evening festivities began in the courtyard of the newly acquired adjacent property, where guests enjoyed cocktails and delicious Hors D’oeuvres, and where alumni, faculty and friends re-connected with laughter and fond memories.

The formal ribbon-cutting ceremony followed, with opening remarks by KTLA’s Ellina Abovian (also a proud Prelacy school parent), who served as the Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening. Abovian eloquently articulated the importance of Armenian schools in the diaspora, providing a safe haven and enriching environment for our youth.  Noting that Ferrahian was the first Armenian day school established in the United States, Abovian lauded the trailblazers who had the foresight 60 years ago to make this school a reality.

Bishop Torkom Donoyan, Prelate of the Western Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church, offered his prayers and blessings, and proceeded to join Sossi Shanlian, Principal of Ferrahian, and Vahe Benlian, Chairman of the School Board, for the ceremonial ribbon cutting.  The attendees cheered with great excitement and pride at the official opening of the property.

Several governmental officials also were on hand, including U.S. Congressman Brad Sherman, Los Angeles City Council President Paul Krekorian, Los Angeles City Council members Nithya Raman and John Lee, as well as former California State Representative Adrin Nazarian (a Ferrahian alumnus).

The collective message of those who spoke focused on the positive impact made by this school, and by the American-Armenian community of the greater San Fernando Valley.  Also in attendance were Archbishop Pargev Martirosyan, former Primate of the Diocese of Arstakh, and members of various sister organizations, including the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, Armenian Relief Society, Homenetmen, the Armenian Natonal Committee, and Hamazkayin.

At the conclusion of the ribbon-cutting ceremony, guests were guided to the original campus through a candle-lit pathway flanked by current Ferrahian students.  This touching and emotional procession signified the bridge between new and old, the resounding proof that we Armenians will persevere and prosper no matter the circumstances.

Principals of Ferrahian, Cabayan and Pilavjian schools

A luxuriously decorated Avedissian Hall awaited the guests of the gala, setting the stage for an evening of celebration, laughter, and purpose.  Master of Ceremonies Jack Hadjinian entertained the attendees with humorous anecdotes, while emphasizing the need for continued support for the school, and Board Chairman Vahe Benlian provided an update on the growth of the student body and the school’s ambitious plans for further expansion. Compelling and informative video presentations regarding the Ferrahian, Cabayan and Pilavjian school activities were also met with great appreciation.  Principals Sossi Shanlian and John Kossakian, and Preschool Director Vehik Gabrielian provided an enjoyable look into the students’ experiences at the respective campuses.

But perhaps the most impressive part of the program was its start, when three Ferrahian students, each with angelic voices, sang for the guests.  Anna Artemian performed the United States national anthem, Maya Kazanjian sang the Armenian national anthem, and Krystal Kojaoghlanian brought the crowd to tears as she sang the Ferrahian anthem, written by the late Garo Bedrossian and composed by the late Alfred Mardoyan, both long-time members of the Ferrahian faculty.  Gabriel Injejikian, the founder of the school, no doubt was beaming with pride from the heavens as these young ladies performed to perfection.

At the conclusion of the program, D.J. Jilbert stepped in to jump-start the dancing and merrymaking, which reached even higher levels when special guest Suro came on stage.  The dance floor was packed throughout the night, and everyone was elated.

It was, after all, a thrilling and meaningful event, a testament to Ferrahian’s past, and a salute to the great things yet to come.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the tireless work of the Gala Committee, with support from the School Board.

As noted, the event generated in excess of $1.25 million in donations, adding to the $5 million seed donation.  As a direct result of this timely and generous financial support, the Encino campus has now doubled its footprint, allowing for several additional classrooms, a performing arts hall, a second athletic gym, and various administrative offices.  These changes have led to immediate logistical improvements, with the addition of ample parking, a more streamlined means of ingress and egress, and the ability for the Armens athletic program to have simultaneous practices and/or games at the two gyms.  With these and other improvements, school enrollment has reached an all-time high of 990 students, and interest in the school continues to grow.

More importantly, however, the school has experienced positive change beyond the expanded facilities and growing number of students.  With the acquisition of the adjacent property, Ferrahian has introduced and implemented several exciting class offerings.  For instance, the school now offers Theater Arts classes, allowing students to showcase and develop their artistic talents in the new property’s performing arts assembly hall.  Other students have immersed themselves in Culinary Arts classes that take place in the new property’s kitchen.  Still more, the additional space has enabled the school to offer computer classes featuring elements of graphic design, Archicad and computer science.  And while robotics currently is limited to club participation, Ferrahian intends to introduce this subject, along with programming and data sciences classes, into next year’s curriculum.  Other applied courses in business and crypto-commerce also are in the works.

All in all, these are very exciting and forward-looking times at Ferrahian, Cabayan, & ARS Pilavjian Schools.  Students are happy and thriving, and the school thanks all its supporters for planting the seed for its — and ultimately the children’s — long-term success.

Garo Hovanissian, Esq. is the Vice-Chair of the Ferrahian Board of Trustees and a parent at the school.

Armenian FM says many mutually-acceptable, albeit non-ideal wordings found with Azerbaijan in peace talks

 17:11,

YEREVAN, MARCH 24, ARMENPRESS. Armenia and Azerbaijan have found mutually-acceptable, albeit non-ideal wordings in the several rounds of peace treaty talks, Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said Friday.

However, he stressed that the issues of primary importance are still under discussion.

“We were able to find non-ideal, but mutually-acceptable wordings around numerous issues,” the foreign minister told lawmakers during the parliamentary foreign relations committee hearings.

“There’ve been discussions, exchange of views, some compromised texts were drafted. Unfortunately, this pertains to the non-priority issues. All priority issues are still under discussion. And I won’t hesitate to say that in most part the positions of the parties are rather far from each other.”

The FM was asked by MP Agnessa Khamoyan to comment whether or not there’s any issue that Armenia and Azerbaijan have thus far agreed upon.

There is no mediation in this negotiations process, FM Mirzoyan said. He stressed that these negotiations are bilateral talks.

He said that Armenia is notifying the three Co-Chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – the US, Russia and France – on the peace treaty talks.

Asked which option is being discussed – the version proposed by the West or by Russia, the FM said: ”A Western option simply doesn’t exist. There was a Russian option over the course, meaning there’ve been parameters. We agreed to take it as a basis, but the Azerbaijani side didn’t. The rest is basically the Armenian-Azerbaijani option.”

Neither the collective West nor any individual country has offered an option of a peace treaty, he said.

YEREVAN, MARCH 23, ARMENPRESS. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said that Yerevan has not yet clarified its position regarding the decision of the International Criminal Court on arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Not yet. We will discuss this with our partners,” ARMENPRESS reports, Peskov told the Podyom telegram channel.

Earlier it became known that the Constitutional Court of Armenia recognized the Rome Statute as conforming to the Constitution of the Republic. Now the Armenian authorities will be obliged to detain Vladimir Putin on their territory, as well as the children’s ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova, in respect of which the International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant.

Forcibly displaced Armenians of Nagorno Karabakh call on UNHCR, Pashinyan, Putin and Aliyev to organize their return

 15:24,

STEPANAKERT, MARCH 20, ARMENPRESS/ARTSAKHPRESS. Representatives of the forcibly displaced Armenian population of Nagorno Karabakh released a statement on March 20, noting that tens of thousands of Armenians today are deprived of their right to live on their homeland as a result of the 44-Day War of 2020 and the forced displacements carried out by Azerbaijan.

“The population of tens of thousands Armenians of Shahumyan region and Getashen sub-region were also forcibly displaced by Azerbaijan back in the 1990s. Whereas under clause 7 of the 9 November 2020 trilateral statement the leaders of the Republic of Armenia, Republic of Azerbaijan and the Russian Federation assumed the obligation to ensure the return of internally displaced persons and refugees to Nagorno Karabakh and adjacent regions under the supervision of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, which hasn’t taken place to this day.

Taking into account the necessity to restore the rights of the forcibly displaced population of Nagorno Karabakh, as well as the obligations assumed by Azerbaijan under clause 7 of the 9 November 2020 trilateral statement, we demand with this letter from the President of Azerbaijan Republic Ilham Aliyev to acknowledge the urgent imperative of restoring the violated rights of Armenian refugees, ensure their safe and dignified return to their historic lands and former settlements in accordance with the assumed obligations, human rights and humanitarian law.

We call on the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, as a signatory to the 9 November 2020 trilateral statement, to display consistent approach in the issue of initiating all international legal and political mechanisms that will be aimed at ensuring the implementation of international obligations by Azerbaijan. At the same time, we ask for additional mechanisms to be created for the more effective protection of the rights and interests of refugees, raising and advancing their lawful demands.

We call on the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin to ensure the implementation of the terms of the 9 November 2020 trilateral statement through the mechanisms envisaged under international law and all possible political levers, taking into account the fact that he is a head of state of the signatory state to the statement, and therefore the guarantor of implementation of the terms of the statement.

We address United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi with the purpose of organizing, supervising and ensuring the return of the displaced Armenian population of the territories under Azerbaijani control, as well as supporting effective and applicable international guarantees for ensuring the security of the returning persons, including the deployment of peacekeeping forces.

At the same time, we draw to the High Commissioner’s attention the fact that the Azerbaijani authorities are currently carrying out illegal repopulation programs of Azerbaijanis in our settlements, impeding our return and illegally appropriating our property.

We present this letter as organizations created by, representing the interests of and acting on behalf of refugees and forcibly displaced persons of the 2020 44-Day War in Nagorno Karabakh and the First Nagorno Karabakh War.

Opposition MP reacts to Pashinyan’s latest statements

Panorama
Armenia – March 15 2023

Opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan has reacted to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s latest warnings of a high risk of an escalation both along Armenia’s border with Azerbaijan and in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh).

“There is a very high probability of an escalation both along Armenia’s border [with Azerbaijan] and in Nagorno-Karabakh,” he told a press conference in Yerevan, pointing to Azerbaijan’s increasingly aggressive rhetoric and “some other information” which he did not disclose.

Also, the premier said that Armenia recently received Baku’s response to its proposals for a peace treaty submitted in mid-February and noted some progress in the peace process.

However, he said “fundamental problems” remain unresolved because “Azerbaijan is trying to put forward territorial claims against Armenia, which is a red line to the country.”

“The most remarkable part of Pashinyan’s press conference concerns the stalemate in negotiations,” Abrahamyan wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.

“Azerbaijan has factually annulled the Prague agreements which were already detrimental to Armenia’s interests, putting forward new ambitious proposals. They imply holding Artsakh-Azerbaijan talks exclusively on integration,” the MP stressed.

He also called attention to Azerbaijan’s rejection of any international guarantees in Artsakh and mediated talks with Artsakh’s authorities.

“Azerbaijan actively promotes the idea of “Western Azerbaijan”, trying to incorporate it into the Armenia-Azerbaijan treaty, which provides an opportunity to legitimize its attack on Armenia,” the deputy said.

“When Pashinyan says that Azerbaijan’s new proposals are crossing the red line, he is not concerned about the interests of Armenia or Artsakh, but seeks to save his own skin.

“The situation has reached a point where it constitutes a political suicide even for Pashinyan, and he has started to worry about his security and future, because the current situation will explode one day, taking down a lot of people,” he added.

What is Armenia’s alternative to CSTO? Defense minister does not answer this question

News.am
Armenia – March 15 2023

On the one hand, Armenia continued to take some steps, take actions, sign agreements related to the CSTO, on the other hand, yesterday at PM Pashinyan’s press conference, an opinion was voiced that the CSTO is leaving Armenia. Opposition MP Gegham Nazaryan stated this at Wednesday’s meeting of the Standing Committee on Defense and Security of the National Assembly of Armenia.

Then, he asked Defense Minister Suren Papikyan this question. “Does the Minister of Defense share this point of view. If not, why are we signing so many agreements? What is the CSTO’s alternative for Armenia today?”

In response, Papikyan said: “I don’t want to get into the discussion about what is the CSTO alternative because if you refer to the Prime Minister’s press conference, he said that Armenia is not leaving anywhere, if there are those leaving, they are leaving Armenia. But we are concerned about that, too. The Ministry of Defense and the Minister of Defense [of Armenia] are also carrying out the activities that we should be guided by according to our international obligations. That is, if we have a current work today, we are obligated to do it, and we do it properly. If documents have been signed, work has been carried out, naturally, within the framework of execution, the Minister of Defense is obligated to report, which I am doing.”
