US AMBASSADOR REFUTES INFORMATION THAT OFFICIAL OBSERVERS FROM THE USA WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE SO-CALLED ‘PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS’ IN NAGORNO-KARABAKH (VIDEO)

Azerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend K.Ramazanova / The U.S. Ambassador
to Azerbaijan, Anne E. Derse, refutes the information that official
observers from the USA will participate in so-called ‘presidential
elections’ in Azerbaijan’s Nagorno-Karabakh region occupied by
Armenia. "We do not recognize the so-called "Nagorno-Karabakh republic"
and therefore, we do not recognize elections in Nagorno-Karabkh,"
the Ambassador said on 19 July in Baku.

Currently media sources spread information that 275 polling stations
are functioning in Nagorno-Karabakh and one more has been opened in
Yerevan, where a permanent representation of the separatist regime
functions. The elections will be observed by observers from Russia,
USA, Armenia and other unrecognized republics ‘Abkhazia, South Osetia
and Pridnestrov’.

The Head of the Office of Public Affairs of the U.S. Embassy in
Azerbaijan, Jonathan Henick, does not exclude the participation of
Armenians as observers in the election, but he said that they are
not official US representatives.

On 19 July the so-called ‘presidential elections’ is taking place in
Nagorno-Karabakh. The first ‘president’ of the self-declared republic
in 1994 was Robert Kocharyan, current President of Armenia. In 1997
Kocharyan was replaced by Arkadi Kukasyan who held this position as
a result of the 2002 elections.

The conflict between the two countries of South Caucasus appeared in
1988 due to territorial claims of Armenia against Azerbaijan. Armenia
has occupied 20% of the Azerbaijani lands including Nagorno-Karabakh
region and seven Districts of the country surrounding it. Since
1992 to the present time, these territories have been under the
occupation of the Armenian Forces. In 1994, Azerbaijan and Armenia
signed a cease-fire agreement at which time the active hostilities
ended. The Co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group ( Russia, France and USA)
is holding peaceful negotiations.

TRIP TO HOMELAND REVEALS REVIVAL OF ARMENIA

Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Eastern Diocese, and members of
the Diocesan Council traveled to Armenia in June, to visit various projects
operated by the Fund for Armenian Relief (FAR). During the trip, the
Council members also spent a lot of time meeting with His Holiness Karekin
II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians.

"The major purpose of the trip was to come visit and recommit ourselves to
the Armenian Church, to spiritually nourish ourselves," Archbishop Barsamian
said. "We also left feeling connected to one another as individuals — of
creating a bond between the leaders of the Eastern Diocese and the
Catholicos and clergy at Holy Etchmiadzin."

FOCUS ON FAITH

The trip, which Council members paid for out of their own pockets, was an
opportunity for the Diocesan Council to see first-hand the rebirth of the
Church in Armenia and to discuss the plans the Catholicos has for
strengthening the bond between the Church and her people.

"Each journey back to our Armenian homeland you can sense a stronger faith,"
Archbishop Barsamian said. "It was good to bring together the leaders of
our Diocese and the Catholicos and other important clergy from the Mother
See. Together we’re working towards the same goal: assuring the Armenian
Church remains a meaningful aspect of the daily lives of our parishioners.
It was a great opportunity to share ideas, concerns, and opportunities."

On Sunday July 1, the Primate celebrated the badarak at the Mother Cathedral
of Holy Etchmiadzin. At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, a special
requiem service, presided over by His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch
and Catholicos of All Armenians, was conducted at the tomb of Catholicos
Karekin I, of blessed memory; marking the eighth anniversary of his passing.

"Catholicos Karekin I, the message from him was that he was the Catholicos
of All Armenians and that Etchmiadzin was the home for every Armenian no
matter where they are in the world. From Antilias to Etchmiadzin, he showed
there’s a universal thread in our people," said Diocesan Council Chairman
Oscar Tatosian.

"One of the key points of our trip was to understand that our home, our
spiritual home is Holy Etchmiadzin," Tatosian added. "I encourage Armenian
faithful to travel to Holy Etchmiadzin, to celebrate the dreams of their
parents and grandparents, who suffered for their faith, and to pray there in
the shadow of Mt. Ararat. You’ll realize we’re a part of this unparalleled
tradition that goes back generations. What we are all about is greater than
ourselves or our parishes, it’s bigger than that and I encourage everyone to
travel to Etchmiadzin to feel that."

DISCUSSION OF ISSUES

The Council members had an opportunity to spend several hours with the
Catholicos, during both formal and more social occasions. James Kalustian,
treasurer of the Diocesan Council, said the variety and length of the
meetings gave the Council Members a better appreciation of the future
envisioned by the Catholicos.

"It gave everyone a better appreciation for the challenges Vehapar faces in
his role as the spiritual leader of our Church and people," he said.

One issue of discussion was the recently completed sociological study of the
Diocese requested by the Diocesan Assembly delegates which explored the
status of the Armenian Christian faith here in the Eastern Diocese.

"The Catholicos is well informed on the most important concerns of our
faithful in America. He is in touch with what’s going on in the United
States. He’s very focused on the well being of the Diocese," Tatosian said.
"He read and had studied the sociological study in-depth. It was obvious
that he was well informed on it and the comments in the report, he took to
heart. I’m encouraged that this was a good dialogue, a good sharing
opportunity."

Also discussed during the meetings was the upcoming Pontifical Visit. The
Catholicos will visit the Diocese this October, touring to parishes in all
corners of the Diocese to get a first-hand look at the continually evolving
face of the Diocese.

"The Catholicos is looking forward to visiting his flock here in the
Diocese," Archbishop Barsamian said. "The trip will allow him to gain a
better understanding of the people of the Diocese, as well as enable our
parishioners to better they know him."

The group also discussed some of the challenges facing the Armenian Church
and its faithful globally, such as recent troubles in the Republic of
Georgia, and what the diaspora can do to help the Catholicos improve the
situation for the Armenians in the Javakh region of Georgia.

"The people in Javakh are part of historical Armenia and since the collapse
of Soviet Union there has been no effort by the Georgian Republic to help
with the financial situation in Javakh, so many Armenians have immigrated.
Additionally, the Georgian Church is the only one accepted by the
authorities there, which makes it difficult for the Armenian Church to be
accepted as a Church. That is why it is important for the Armenian Church
and Armenians in general to help the spiritual well being of Armenians in
Javakh and to raise their social standing," said Diocesan Vicar and Diocesan
Council member Fr. Haigazoun Najarian. "Etchmiadzin has appointed clergy to
the region. There’s a limit on what Etchmiadzin can do, but it is trying to
help through its clergy to at least attend to the spiritual well being of
the community there."

Armenian Analists Speak Of Turkey’s Elections

ARMENIAN ANALYSTS SPEAK OF TURKEY’S ELECTIONS

ARMENPRESS
Jul 18, 2007

YEREVAN, JULY 18, ARMENPRESS: A diplomat in Yerevan has reconfirmed
today Armenia’s willingness to normalize relations with neighboring
Turkey without preconditions.

Vladimir Karapetian, the acting head of the foreign ministry’s press
and information department, said the official Yerevan does not believe,
however, that Turkey’s foreign policy vector would change after the
July 22 extraordinary parliamentary elections.

"But despite the composition of future Turkish parliament Armenia
is ready to establish unconditioned diplomatic relations with it,"
he said.

Hayk Demoyan, director of the Yerevan-based Genocide Institute and
Museum, said he does not believe that the parliamentary elections in
Turkey would effect its policy of denying the 1915 Armenian genocide.

"It is possible that the party that wins the election may soften
Turkey’s official policy in regard to the Armenian genocide in a
self-establishment effort," Demoyan said, but he refused to comment on
media reports saying that the majority of Turkish Armenians are going
to vote for the governing Islamist-rooted Justice and Development
party of prime minister Recep Erdogan.

Ruben Safrastian, a prominent expert in Turkish studies and head of
the National Academy of Sciences affiliated Institute for Eastern
Studies, declined media speculations that the July 22 elections will
be a battle between pan-Islamic and pan-Turkic groups.

"The fight will be between Kemalists and Islamist political groups,’ he
said. According to him, the Justice and Development party stands better
chances to win the polls, but it will not have absolute majority.

Opinion polls in Turkey show that Erdogan’s party may win up to 40 per
cent of the vote, with the staunchly secularist Republican People’s
Party (CHP) coming second on about 20 per cent and the far-right
Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) on 10 to 15 per cent.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has made a statement saying
"Kosovo is not a precedent for Nagorno Karabakh." In his words,
granting Kosovo independence will not serve as an example for other
states, particularly for "separatist movements" of Georgia and
Azerbaijan. "I must tell that Kosovo is a unique issue that cannot
serve as a precedent for other cases, Georgian Abkhaz Republic and
the disputable Nagorno Karabakh conflict, including," Ban Ki-moon
announced at a press conference in UN New York Office. This statement
has made Azerbaijan very happy.

The Armenian foreign minister public relations department head,
Vladimir Karapetyan, stated Armenia’s disposition to Panorama.am
saying "we do not connect Nagorno Karabakh with Kosovo procedures"
also saying "different international institutions have made similar
statements many times."

Panorama.am has earlier quoted a statement by Serbia President Boris
Tadich who said that Kosovo’s independence may serve as an example for
the resolution of similar conflicts. In the words of the president,
Nagorno Karabakh and Kosovo conflicts are literally the same and
if Kosovo gets independence, Nagorno Karabakh and Abkhazia can make
similar claims.

The solemn seeing-off ceremony of the sixth shift of Armenian
peacekeepers for Iraq took place at the Municipal Regiment of
Yerevan. The peacekeeping platoon comprised of 46 servicemen will
be drafted for Iraq for the period of six months. Five doctors are
included in the platoon.

Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Republic of
Armenia, Colonel-General Seyran Ohanyan said in his welcome speech
that the peacekeeping mission of the Armenian peacekeepers is "the
continuation of the fight for survival, due to which the contemporary
history of the Armenian people was created."

"Our army passed a glorious way, in the basis of which lies the fight
for survival and the liberation movement that granted independence
to our people. Your mission is the continuation of this, reconfirming
that the Republic of Armenia has its unique place among the states and
peoples of the world, and it is able to defend not only its interests
and country, ensure the peaceful life of the nation, but also serve
as another guarantee of common security," Seyran Ohanyan said.

"Once again we prove to the international community that we can secure
peace not only within the borders of the country but also outside it,"
said the Chief of the general Staff of the Armed Forces.

Zionists Demolish Human Rights

– Ashraf Abu Moch, Israeli Palestinian, ICAHD Volunteer

ICAHD (Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions) is a non-violent
do something group opposed to the occupation of Palestine which
resists the Israeli demolitions of Palestinian homes in the Occupied
Territories. This summer ICAHD has committed to rebuild 300 of
the so far 18,000 homes the Israeli government has destroyed which
has resulted in creating 18,000 homeless families who legally own
their land.

According to international law, the Fourth Geneva Convention forbids
home demolitions in occupied territories and demands that the occupiers
maintain the status quo and not pilfer the resources of the indigenous
population.

Indigenous Palestinians are denied building permits in the Orwellian
democracy of Israel while USA fundamentalist Christian churches
financially support and pray for the illegal settlements/colonies
which have been erected on legally owned Palestinian land.

In contrast to the misdeeds of empire, twenty five internationals,
dozens of Israelis and scores of Palestinians have created a community
upon the rocky barren land of the Hamdan family of nine with intent
to hand the keys of the house over to Hassan Yussef Hamdan and his
family fourteen days from now.

The land has legally been owned by the Hamdan clan with the deeds
filled-out in Hassan Yussef’s great-grandfather’s name, during the
Ottoman Empire. The oldest son, Mohammed’s grandmother, Um Mohammad
addressed the media in Arabic which was translated to English by Nadia
another ICAHD volunteer, while the foundation of the house was being
laid: "We own twenty-five pieces of land, twenty-five meters is one
piece. After building our home here, we received papers demanding we
demolish our own home. We got a lawyer in Tel Aviv, and after paying
$10, 000.00 she did nothing. The soldiers came under our window and we
hired another lawyer and had to pay 70,000 shekels within two hours to
hold off the soldiers. The soldiers came back two more times, after
more negotiations the soldiers came back a third time and destroyed
our home."

ICAHD spokesmen, Meir Margalit admitted, "We are here because we are
embarrassed and ashamed of our government. A decent person cannot
handle what this government puts innocent people through. We are doing
this for both sides: for the innocent families and to keep the moral
values of Judaism alive."

American-Israeli Aviva Joseph wrapped it up when she informed the
crowd, "We are here building on the 9th day of Av, the day the Jewish
Temple was destroyed… I was born in Chile into an Orthodox Zionist
home. Both my parents are Holocaust survivors. When I was ten I use to
go to Bethlehem, but after the first intifada, things began closing
down; physical walls and psychological walls. I lived in Gilo, some
call it a settlement, some a neighborhood and I lived in a small box
with my own myth. Now I live in California and things you see from
there you can’t see here and other things you must come here to see
what cannot be seen anywhere else. I love Israel, but until I began
listening to the voices of the marginalized did I see I was living
my own myth. The work is not just in the head but in the heart –
opening both sides to a new paradigm with compassion. It must be like
hydrogen and oxygen the sides coming together; who could have thought
that would make water?"

Jeff Halper, American-Israeli, founder and coordinator of ICAHD
and a twenty-first century prophet, was unable to be at the site
due to a family emergency, but on March 17, 2006, the 7th day of my
third journey to Israel Palestine, Jeff greeted my group of nearly
one hundred Internationals attending a Sabeel/Arabic for THE WAY,
reality tour through the West Bank, in the East Jerusalem YMCA
conference room with, "I don’t want to depress you too much but the
issue of the occupation is a global issue that transcends boundaries
and Israel-Palestine impacts all global realities… We have a country
created by the UN and supported by the USA that has a brutal occupation
while International Law defines occupation as a temporary situation.

"When you incorporate occupied territories, highways, settlements
and use resources it is all illegal according to the Fourth Geneva
Convention which states the status quo must be retained so that
negotiations can happen. Unilateral actions are illegal. The occupying
power is responsible for those under its control.

"Tony Blair said 70% of all the conflicts in the world can be traced
back to the Israeli Palestinian conflict. What gives us hope is that
as this conflict worsens maybe Europe will figure out that American
policies are against their interests and intervene… This conflict
impacts the global community and especially everyone in the USA.

"If we do fix this conflict it would be a tremendous step forward in
global reconciliation… This whole issue is based on Human Rights
and it is a global issue requiring global intervention. …Israel
is not a democracy, it is an ethnocracy: full rights to Jews, but
not Palestinians."

After our group said goodbye to Jeff and hi to Angela, another
dedicated ICAHD volunteer, and I went for a reality tour of east
Jerusalem. We witnessed the remains of many demolished homes and
saw the tents where the home owners now lived. Angela informed us,
"There are forty-two illegal settlements in the Muslim, Christian
and Armenian quarters of Jerusalem. The only green area for children
to play will soon have a high rise for the settlers which will be 7
meters taller than the walls of the Old City… Out of site of most
Israelis is the Hebronization of east Jerusalem. The Wall has been
deemed illegal by the International Court of Justice but America
continues to allow it to grow. The wall is way over the Green Line
proving it is not about security but about grabbing Palestinian land.

Israel’s policy of Quiet Transfer: getting rid of the Palestinians
is a huge humanitarian crisis.

"There is an advertisement that runs in the USA that reads: ‘Have
a Holiday Home in Jerusalem.’ The ad does not mention this home is
100% ILLEGAL! It is clear how the wall zig zags that it is not about
security but about grabbing the maximum land with minimal Palestinian
occupation."

When I returned to Israel Palestine in October 2006, over sixty
internationals gathered in Jerusalem for another ICAHD tour. Jeff
informed us, "It has been said that the Israelis do not love this
land, they just want to possess it. There have been three stages to
make this occupation permanent. The first was to establish the facts
on the ground: the settlements. There are a half-million Israelis and
four-million Palestinians here. They have been forced into Bantustans,
truncated mini states, prison states. It is apartheid and Bush and
Hillary are both willing collaborators.

"In 1977, Sharon came in with a mandate, money and resources to
make the Israeli presence in the West Bank irreversible. The
second stage began in April 2004 when America approved the
Apartheid/Convergence/Realignment Plan and eight settlement blocs.

This is just like South Africa! The Bush Sharon letter exchange
guaranteed that the USA considers the settlements non-negotiable. The
Convergence Plan and The Wall create the borders and that is what
defines Bantustans. Congress ratified the Bush plan and only Senator
Byrd of West Virginia voted no and nine House Representatives.

"Israel has set up a matrix of control, a thick web of settlements
guaranteed to make the occupation permanent by establishing facts on
the ground. Israel denies there is an occupation, so everything is
reduced to terrorism. It is our job to insist upon the human rights
issue, for occupied people have International Law on their side."

I asked Jeff if the settlements were in actuality colonies, meaning
foreigners had invaded and set up residence in another’s territory.

He agreed and added that, "When Jerusalem was controlled by Jordan,
the East side was 6 sq. km. Since 1967, Israel has added 64 sq. km.

The West side was 38 sq. km until ’67 and is now 108 sq. kms. Israel
plans to develop 17 settlements. Israeli policy is to maintain a 72%
Jewish and 28% Arab population. Palestinians cannot get building
permits to build upon their legally owned land. The Arab land has
been re-zoned as green space, and the green space will be re-zoned
for the settlements. Every single Palestinian home in Jerusalem
has a demolition order. The entire West Bank has been zoned as
agricultural land by Israel, and that will also be re-zoned again
for more settlements."

Doublespeak has also been employed in the USA to turn the illegal
colonies – for all the settlements are considered illegal, according
to International Law – into "neighborhoods".

A new highway has already begun to link all the settlements in a
ring around the Old City of Jerusalem. The Eastern Ring Road will
have bridges for Israelis but is just another wall against the
Palestinians. As we rode past acres of olive trees that had been
chopped off by the Israeli army, on our way to the house made for
peace, Jeff stated: "I don’t just have a political problem with this
Judiaization of the Old City, it is ecologically and environmentally
offensive."

I add it also is spiritually impoverished. The raping and pillaging of
what is claimed holy ground refutes and denies the biblical meaning
of dominion. The ancients understood dominion meant to nurture, love
and protect and the destruction of Palestinian homes, the stealing
and destroying of their legal property, is an abomination.

We concluded that day at the Beit Arabiya Peace House, which is at
the crossroads of Areas A, B and C and which has been demolished
and rebuilt four times and the owner has just received his fifth
demolition order.

Beit Arabiya is the name of the home of the Arabiya family with seven
children that has been demolished four times by the Israeli government
and rebuilt four times by the efforts of ICAHD and the JCHR (Jurist
Center for Human Rights), a Palestinian NGO focused on legal advocacy
for Palestinians in the Jerusalem area.

The home has become a meeting place for Israelis, Palestinian and
International peace activists and is the cornerstone and intersecting
point of Areas A, B, and C. The smallest of the three is Area A,
which is under Palestinian authority. Areas B and C are under Israeli
control. Since 1967 over 18,000 Palestinian families in the occupied
territories have been left homeless due to home demolitions.

According to Jeff Halper, the reasons for these home demolitions are
purely political: to confine the 3½ million residents of the West
Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza into small, crowded, impoverished and
disconnected enclaves.

The Beit Arabyia home/Peace Center’s closest neighbor is a soon
to be dismantled Bedouin camp. The Israeli government’s policy of
"Quiet Transfer" will mean extinction for the nomadic Bedouins for
they have been denied the inalienable right to move about to graze
their dwindling herds. On a hill in front of the Arabyia home/Peace
Center is the newly erected Sheen Bet [similar to USA FBI] prison
and interrogation center. A new portion of the Ring Road which will
connect the illegal colonies runs between the two and The Apartheid
Wall is in full frontal brutal view.

Upon the wall of the home is a mural donated by the North American
Workers Against the USA occupation of Iraq and the Israeli occupation
of Palestine. The mural depicts Rachel Corrie, the American who was
run over by a Caterpillar bulldozer in Gaza when she stood up to defend
the home of a Physician with five children, and a pregnant Palestinian
woman of ten who was also killed in Gaza. The angelic images of the
two women float above a depiction of a USA made Caterpillar bulldozer
tipped to one side and flanked by tanks and weapons of destruction. On
both sides of the weapons of destruction are many people. A railroad
track reminds the viewer that prior to 1948, Jews and Palestinians
once worked together in peaceful solidarity to build a railroad.

The Arabyia home/Peace Center is the cornerstone of the village of
Anata and the Shufat refugee camp, in the very area where the prophet
Jeremiah in the 6th century B.C. critiqued the violent conflicts
in the Mid East, which were already old news: "I hear violence and
destruction in the city, sickness and wounds are all I see."

[Jeremiah 6:7]

The Arabyia home/Peace Center is a visible persistent witness of hope
and solidarity that stands because of the cooperation and unity of
locals, Israelis and Internationals with one mind, one heart and with
The Great Spirit on their side.

Mohammad Alatar, film producer of The Iron Wall addressed our group
after we broke bread and ate a typical Palestinian feast prepared by
the Arabiya family: "I am a Muslim Palestinian American and when my
son asked me who my hero was I took three days to think about it. I
told him my hero is Jesus, because he took a stand and he died for
it. What really needs to be done is for the churches to be like Jesus;
to challenge the Israeli occupation and address the apartheid practices
as moral issues. Even if every church divested and boycotted Israel
it would not harm Israel. After the USA and Russia, Israel is the
third largest arms exporter in the world. It is a moral issue that
the churches must address."

While the radical opposition is considering of bringing into life
the idea of a united candidate, the candidate of the authorities has
already started his campaign activities.

According to the circulating news, the region of Gegharqunik was in
happiness on Saturday and Sunday since the RA Prime Minister visited
the region.

The Bazoyans’ family had a special event to be happy, Serge Sargsyan
presented a TV set to them and danced and rejoiced with their family.

Thus, judging from the mood in the "Republican Party of Armenia" they
do not waste time in vain and have launched their campaign activities
logically by promises and bribes.

Gallery 25 lands one hot exhibit: Also, a gimmicky idea at Arte
Am?ricas leads to some gems.
Donald Munro, The Fresno Bee – California – KRTBN
Published: Jul 13, 2007

>From my critic’s notebook:

* If I were Donald Trump, I’d forget Running Horse and bestow my money
on what Fresno really needs: air conditioning for Gallery 25. The scene
at ArtHop last week was a little like stepping straight into the sauna
at your gym. I managed to last about 10 minutes before nearly passing
out in a sweat-soaked stupor.

As you can imagine, there weren’t huge crowds in Gallery 25 because of
the heat — which is too bad, because the show is so fascinating. In
one of those truly strange coincidences that leave you asking, "What
are the odds," it turns out there’s another Gallery 25 in Gyumri,
Armenia.

(Our Gallery 25 was named for the number of members it had when it was
founded years ago; their Gallery 25’s name came from its street
address.)

They found out about our Gallery 25 and arranged for an exchange. So
you have a chance this month to see works from a variety of Armenian
artists.

My favorite is a stunning painting by an artist named Arthur Sargsyan.
It’s a multimedia work somewhat in the vein of Mary Maughelli — a
collagelike compilation with swirls of thick color, Armenian text,
statuesque buildings and squiggles of motion. Like Maughelli’s work, it
draws you in like a churning whirlpool — once you’re inside, it’s
enveloping.

I’d started off with Corridor 2122, which has an interesting
photography exhibition curated by Jim Heitzeberg titled "Pictures With
Content." Six different artists are represented ranging from Michael
Reed’s peppy series over a period of months documenting the clothes he
sheds at the end of the day — who knew a pair of jeans slung over a
bathroom hamper could be so artistic? — to Kirtley King’s disturbing
"Focusing on Close Objects to Resolve the Black Holes Left Behind,"
which uses NASA-style planetary photos to close in on the minutiae of
everyday faces. (If you get close to enough to anyone, we all start
looking like something from outer space.)

My favorite of the exhibition: Jo Anne Yada’s four ambiguous images, in
grainy shades of black and white, suggest disembodied human figures —
almost like a crime scene.

There’s a sense of floating in the works, of disoriented imbalance,
that suggests, if not tragedy, then grim times ahead. They’re quite
compelling.

Finally, I ended up in the coldest place of all: Arte Americas, which
has a special gallery housing works from the Fresno Art Museum that’s
like a walk-in freezer. Brrrr. Felt good. It was fun to finally catch
Joe Bravo’s big "tortilla art" show. I’m still not sure that Bravo’s
tortilla paintings are much more than a gimmick. Some seem serious,
such as the iconic image he painted of Che Guevara. Others just have to
be satirical in intent, such as his warm and fuzzy portraits of puppies
that look like they belong in a Hallmark store.

Whatever his intent, it’s an interesting approach that has driven lots
of traffic into Arte Americas, which is a good thing. And once you’re
in for the tortilla art, you’re exposed to Bravo’s big, brash paintings
done in vivid propaganda style — almost like Socialist Realism. Even
poor, put-upon George W. Bush gets his chance for satirizing. But he
didn’t get his own tortilla. What’s up with that?

* I want to acknowledge an amazing theatrical performance: "Lucia’s
Chapters," a riveting piece performed last Friday at Summer Arts by the
noted avant-garde theater company Mabou Mines.

This two-person show had me mesmerized from the opening scene, when an
intense beam of light narrowed down to a razor-sharp vertical line
bisecting the imposing figure of Lucia, played by the consummate Ruth
Maleczech. This was Lucia Joyce, daughter of the famed poet James
Joyce, living out her last days in a mental institution.

There are times when theater is so good that it makes you shiver.
Perched solidly in a chair, at times picking up a cherished photo album
that reminded her of her famous father, Maleczech didn’t have much
chance to roam the stage. Her character was too frail for that. But
even seated, she created such a nexus of energy and intensity that it
was like watching one blazing light bulb in an otherwise dark room.

An astonishing technical design for the production used sophisticated
video and projection techniques to create both the world of Lucinda’s
mind and her somewhat fuzzy take on reality. (Or was it just blurred by
all those drugs pumped into her over the years?) The lighting and set
design never overwhelmed — and in fact at times settled for simple
darkness. It was a beautiful example of how technology can enhance a
performance without drowning it.

THE MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS KAREKIN II
SUPREME PATRIARCH AND CATHOLICOS OF ALL ARMENIANS
ON THE OCCASION OF BRINGING THE EARTHLY REMAINS OF
NATIONAL BENEFACTORS ALEX AND MARIE MANOOGIAN
TO THE MOTHER SEE OF HOLY ETCHMIADZIN
13 July 2007, Monastery of Saint Gayane, Holy Etchmiadzin

Honorable President of the National Assembly, Dear Manoogian Family,
Reverend Clergy and Dear Pious People,

The return of children who have lived with the love of the homeland to the
homeland – the haven of the nation’s immortal spirit – is steeped in
mystery.  Through the grace of the Almighty, our free land receives today
its dedicated scions – National Hero of the Republic of Armenia, Life
President of the Armenian General Benevolent Union, Alex Manoogian and his
beloved wife, Marie Manoogian, who lived and contributed selfless efforts
for the love of the renaissance and vibrancy of the spiritual and national
life of our people dispersed throughout the world.  With great philanthropy,
they illuminated our churches, and educational and cultural institutions.
They created the luminous path of their own lives, as well as the lives of
countless Armenians, with the faith and vision of a renewed, prosperous and
flourishing homeland.  The preservation of the concept of homeland and of
the legacy of our ancestors within the souls of all Armenians was the
aspiration of the great benefactors.  Unwavering fidelity to the bright
future of the homeland, the Armenian people and to Holy Etchmiadzin is the
inheritance they left to future generations, with the belief in the eternity
of the nation and its sacred values.

The love of our Church and Holy Etchmiadzin was embedded in the soul of Alex
Manoogian at a young age.  He was always tied to church life with warmth and
love, contributing to the mission of our Church, as well as through his
philanthropic works and as a deacon serving at the Holy Altar of our Lord.
We reflect with deep emotion that Alex and Marie Manoogian, with a faithful
and noble heart, cared for their neighbors throughout their entire
God-granted life together, and through their many acts of charity, brought
to life the message of the Gospel.  As commendable citizens of the United
States, with feelings of gratitude toward America, they extended their
philanthropy to the educational and cultural life of the United States as
well.

The luminous memory of Mr. and Mrs. Manoogian is unforgettable.  Through
their church-building and nation-benefiting endeavors, they have become
worthy of the warm love and sincere respect of our people dispersed
throughout the world.  The high awards and medals which have been bestowed
upon Alex Manoogian represent praise for their virtuous lives and
appreciation for their service and labors.  He was worthily decorated with
the highest honor of our Church – the Order of Saint Gregory the
Illuminator, as well as bestowed with the title of National Hero of the
Republic of Armenia.

We offer prayers and incense before their graves.  Let us give prayers of
thanks to God, that their spirit of love of nation and Church, and the
example of their good works, continue to live in the souls of Armenians, as
within their children, Louise Manoogian Simone and Richard Manoogian, and
their grandchildren, who today bring their important contribution to the
vibrancy of our Church, and the progress and development of our homeland.

Dearly Beloved,
Today our souls are joyful, for the earthly remains of the praiseworthy
children of our Church and great national benefactors, with the agreement of
their son and daughter, have arrived in the homeland from the United States,
to be placed in our spiritual and cherished center, under the divine
blessings of Holy Etchmiadzin.

Offering our prayers to our Lord in heaven, we will commit the remains of
Alex and Marie Manoogian of blessed memory to our native soil, with the
belief that their piety and devotion will always remain alive in the life of
our people, and their noble acts will live as testimonies to their faithful
spirit, continuing to plant new seeds of endless dedication and unceasing
vigilance in the hearts of a new generation for all that is holy for our
Church, homeland and nation.

We pray that our Merciful and Philanthropic God keep in blissful peace the
souls of His loyal servants who are at rest in the heights of heaven on the
peaceful shore of eternal life, and bless their and our vision for the
joyful unified life of homeland and people.

May Grace and Love be with us and with all.
Remember Lord, the souls of our blessed benefactors, Alex and Marie
Manoogian, and give them rest in the light of Your divine presence. Amen.
