The Nagorno-Karabakh Defense Army is always ready to repel any
claim on its air borders, Lieutenant Colonel Senor Hasratyan, the
press-secretary of the Nagorno-Karabakh Defense Minister, told an
ArmInfo correspondent, commenting upon Azeri mass media’s announcements
about the flights of Azeri MiG-29 fighters along the contact line of
the NKR and Azeri armed forces.

According to Senor Hasratyan, Azeri planes make such flights
periodically.

"There have been no cases of violation of the Nagorno-Karabakh air
borders ye t. But if this happens, we are always ready to stop these
efforts and repel any claim on our air borders", he emphasized.

The leader of the Dashink Party Samvel Babayan will not run in the
Armenian parliamentary election from electoral district 37.

"The election campaign in Armenia has become a means of settling
personal problems. There is no clash of ideas. The government uses
its administrative, financial resources for pressure all over the
country, including in the electoral district 37 in Goris. Evidence
to this is the illegal action against the leader of the National
Democratic Union Vazgen Manukyan," said Gnel Galechyan, a member of
the political council of the Dashink Party explaining the withdrawal
of Samvel Babayan’s candidacy.

In electoral district 37 in Goris the Dashink Party will support
Samvel Harutiunyan running for parliament on the ticket of the Heritage
Party. "A few days ago Harutiunyan called on Babayan asking to support
him." According to Gnel Glechyan, Samvel Babayan accepted this proposal
to put an end to rumors that in electoral district 37 there is no clash
of ideologies but a clash between Samvel Babayan and Serge Sargsyan.

Despite the explanations, the politicians are guessing at the
refusal of Samvel Babayan to run for parliament. In addition, many
say it happened after the death of Prime Minister Andranik Margaryan
and rumors came that the position of the minister of defense Serge
Sargsyan is becoming stronger. Samvel Babayan is said to have been
"warned" that he will lose the election. Others say he made a deal
with someone. At any rate, they hit the target – Samvel Babayan is
the focus of national debates, which is already a PR advantage for
a political figure.

In the upcoming Armenian election the traditional ways of campaign,
even electoral fraud will turn to be not so effective. There are too
many forces which have similar political "assessed contribution". And
in order to stand out they need to produce shock. People often vote
on the basis of popularity rather than ideology of one candidate or
another. The same as in shops where people buy a product because it
is advertised and not because it is high quality.

Two more sessions of "shock therapy" and the party of Samvel Babayan
will defeat some more ideologized parties.

ANKARA: Perincek: Trial Was Not A Fair One

PERINCEK: TRIAL WAS NOT A FAIR ONE

Today’s Zaman, Turkey
March 28 2007

The leader of Turkey’s Workers’ Party (ÝP) Doðu Perincek, who has
become the first person in history tried and sentenced for expressing
the opinion that there was no "Armenian genocide," said Switzerland,
where his court trial took place, had been chosen by other powers
acting behind the scenes and argued that his trial in Lausanne was
not a fair one.

The fact that Switzerland, with its positive image in Turkey as a
peaceful and democratic country, took the lead in punishing views
differing with those of the Armenians on history came as a surprise to
many in Turkey. Why is such a country which has nothing to do with the
Armenian issue and has no serious diplomatic problem with Turkey on the
frontline of the debates, asked observers. Perincek, who has already
appealed the conviction to an upper court in Switzerland, told Today’s
Zaman that even some intellectual circles in Switzerland admitted that
this "dirty job" was thrown onto their country’s shoulders. "My court
case has ignited extensive debates within the framework of freedom of
expression. People should be free to make their own judgments about
historical facts," he said.

Perincek also claimed that his trial in Lausanne was not a fair one.

The translation provided during the court process was far from
sufficient according him. "Only the questions and my answers were
translated, apart from that all other conversation between the judges
and prosecutors were in French and I could not follow a word of it.

Besides, I brought so many documents to the court; books, reports
and some of them were official writings of some Armenian statesmen as
well. I do not think the judge has even bothered to read the summary
report of those documents. Obviously the decision was already made
when the trial began."

Meanwhile, Swiss Judge Pierre-Henri Winzap told the court that Perincek
was an arrogant instigator and racist who had intentionally denied the
"genocide," which Swiss public opinion considered as an established
historic fact. Perincek said he felt utmost sorrow for that calumny,
"I am the last person in the world who can be called racist."

Perincek says he does not care that his name went down in history as
the first person sentenced for rejecting the "Armenian genocide." He
says, "What it is more important to me is that my nation was humiliated
with this unjust conviction from the Swiss court."

Perincek, given a suspended penalty of 9,000 Swiss francs and ordered
to pay 1,000 francs to an Armenian association, said: "the Worker’s
Party has enough to pay such amount but we received a lot of phone
calls from all over Turkey for support. Many people and institutions
are volunteering to pay that money. This is very uplifting for us."

Dogu Perincek and his party will join with some other civil initiatives
and will be marching in Paris on April 14 to draw the attention to the
French and American governments’ attempts at passing Armenian genocide
bills backed by the intensive lobbying of the Armenian Diaspora.

Will Serge Sargsyan Remain In The Ticket Or Go On Holiday?

WILL SERGE SARGSYAN REMAIN IN THE TICKET OR GO ON HOLIDAY?

"RA Prime Minister Andranik Margaryan was capable of finding solutions
to complicated issues. He mastered certain skills and was aware of
political secrets otherwise he couldn’t have held the post for such
a long period," says Aram Sargsyan, leader of the Democratic Party
of Armenia.

In his words, Andranik Margaryan was a wise political figure, capable
of securing the country’s safety; the prime minister’s absence will
be felt during the pre- and post-election periods.

As for Serge Sargsyan’s nomination in the post of the prime minister,
the leader of the Democratic Party maintains that the RA Defense
Minister will face a dilemma during the elections; "He must either
go on holiday or quit the ticket. It is upon them to decide,"
Mr. Sargsyan adds.

Aram Isabekyan, Rector of the National Academy of Fine Arts and a
candidate of the proportional ticket of Prosperous Armenia describes
Andranik Margaryan as a kind-hearted and tolerant person. "If anyone
turned to the prime minister with request he did his utmost to
help. All mighty forces must continue the prime minister’s work."

UAE territory off-limits for anti-Iran strike – president

UAE territory off-limits for anti-Iran strike – president

18:01|27/ 03/ 2007

ABU DHABI, March 27 (RIA Novosti) – Khalifa bin Zayid al-Nuhayyan,
president of the United Arab Emirates, said Tuesday his country will
not allow anyone to use its territory to conduct anti-Iranian
operations.

The Emirates News Agency WAM quoted al-Nuhayyan as saying in an
interview with the Al-Hayat newspaper, published in London, that the
UAE has refused the use of its territory for aggression against any
country, especially against a neighboring Islamic state.

The president said that a recent message delivered by Sheikh Abdallah
bin Zayid, foreign minister of the UAE, to Iran confirmed that the
country was not involved in the conflict between Iran and the U.S.,
and would not allow anyone to use its territory for any military,
reconnaissance or security operations against Iran.

The Al-Hayat newspaper quoted al-Nuhayyan as saying that the UAE had
always called on Iran to act on a flexible and realistic basis, to
respect international law and obey Resolution 1737 to thwart the
escalation of tension in the region.

Last December, in response to Iran’s unwillingness to give up its
nuclear ambitions, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1737,
which provided for sanctions against Iran banning activities involving
uranium enrichment, chemical reprocessing, heavy water-based projects,
and the production of nuclear weapons delivery systems.

Conversely, Al-Nuhayyan said that he has urged the United States and
Western countries to continue seeking diplomatic means to settle the
conflict with Iran and avoid the use of force, which could escalate
into a regional crisis.

The president of the UAE confirmed that his country and other Persian
Gulf nations would like to diversify their energy supplies, including
through nuclear energy, which, he said, should be used for civilian
purposes only.

The latest reports indicate that Russian reconnaissance officers have
obtained information concerning the mobilization of U.S. military
forces near Iran’s borders.
