Armenian Community In need of Bone Marrow Donor

Submitted by Annabel Tautou on Fri, 08/24/2012 – 05:19

Recently, a case grabbed the eye balls of many, as it was found that
more than 200 Armenians are in need of bone marrow donor. The case was
of Debbi Margosian Chapman, who desperately needs to undergo a stem
cell transplant for his Acute Myeloid Leukemia condition.

Being related to the Armenian community, it would be best to find a
donor from the same. This case led experts to shed many inhibitions
related to stem cells donation. They explained that donor does not
have to pass through any kind of pain and the procedure is similar to
blood donation.

Stem cells are being taken from donor, and blood is given back to him
and after a couple of days, his stem cells also get replenished. A
person aged between 18 and 60 can easily become the donor. Parents of
Chapman are even ready to pay $25,000 to a person, who agrees to given
his stem cells to their child.

A camp is scheduled to be organized at the Armenian Youth Federation
Olympics Track and Field, which is in Newton North High School,
Massachusetts. The free screening camp will be organized from 9 am on
September 2, which falls on Sunday.

Sports: King Arthur Looks To Regain His Kingdom

King Arthur Looks To Regain His Kingdom

by Johnny Walker

In the weekend’s most interesting boxing matchup, `King’ Arthur
Abraham (34-3, 27 KOs), an Armenian fighting out of Germany, squares
off with current WBO Champion Robert Stieglitz (42-2, 23 KOs) at the
o2 World in Berlin in a showdown that will have a major impact on the
talent-laden super middleweight division.

Abraham, you many recall, was picked by many boxing experts to run
away with Showtime’s Super Six tournament when he knocked Jermain
Taylor cold in 2009. But since that time, the Armenian star’s crown
has become tarnished, with losses to Andre Dirrell, Carl Froch, and
Andre Ward throwing Abraham’s boxing fortunes into a tailspin.

Since his loss to Ward, Abraham has gone back to the basics and ground
out two workmanlike wins over mid-level opposition.

But now comes the real test: can King Arthur force his way back into
the super middleweight picture by grabbing a major title? Or will he
be consigned to history as a fighter who couldn’t make the leap from
middleweight to super middle?

Abraham knows just what is on the line on Saturday: `From this point
onwards, every fight is going to be a last chance for me,’ he said at
the fight’s final press conference. `But I will grab it with both
hands. No matter if the fight goes the distance or not – I will prove
a point on Saturday.’

Stieglitz is not widely known in North America, and carries the rep of
being a slick boxer who has faced mostly B-level opposition. The
Russian-born fighter’s coach, Dirk Dzemski, says his man is going to
prove too wily for King Arthur: `We are going to keep the belt. We
detected a lot of weaknesses while watching Abraham and we will take
full advantage of them,’ says the trainer.

There is no doubt, however, that Abraham, who no matter what
shortcomings he has as a boxer-his peek-a-boo defensive style and
tendency to throw wide punches can be used against him- is a man who
possesses tremendous power, and is a big step up for the WBO champ.

Abraham’s trainer Ulli Wegner, for one, thinks his man will prove to
be far too much for Stieglitz: `We are going to wipe the floor with
them and that’s the end of the story,’ he predicts.

The end of one story, perhaps, but also the start of another chapter
in the legend of King Arthur.

Helping the Armenian Community of Syria

In response to a directive issued by the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin
calling on all dioceses to initiate efforts for Syrian relief, Archbishop
Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America
(Eastern), is asking the faithful of the Eastern Diocese to take part in the
relief effort.

As fighting in Syria continues, the local Armenian community has been beset
by increasing difficulties-including heightened threats to safety and
financial stability. The Armenian community of Homs and many Armenian
families living in Aleppo and Damascus have fled their homes to find refuge
with relatives. Local Armenian institutions have been struggling to continue
operations.

Bishop Armash Nalbandyan, the Primate of the Armenian Diocese of Damascus,
informed Holy Etchmiadzin that a Syrian-Armenian emergency aid organization
has been formed to provide refugees with housing and medical assistance, and
to meet other immediate needs of the community. In addition, the aid
organization supports local churches, schools, and cultural institutions,
which strive to preserve the historic Armenian presence in Syria.

Individuals and parishes can make checks out to the Diocese of the Armenian
Church of America (please write “Syrian Relief” in the memo). All funds
collected should be sent to the Diocesan Center (630 Second Avenue, New
York, NY 10016) no later than Monday, October 1.

Individuals can also contribute online at (Please
click on “Make a Donation” on the homepage. In the lower part of the online
information entry form, select the button “In Memory of,” and type “Syrian
Relief” in the memo bar that appears.)

All the proceeds collected will go to the relief efforts, to be distributed
through the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin.

“Above all, we ask everyone to include the people of Syria in your prayers,
and to ask our Lord to bestow peace on the victims and consolation on their
families,” Archbishop Barsamian wrote in his message.

Syria opposition issues threats to Armenians

The Supreme Council of the Syrian Revolution has threatened the
Armenian community in a recently released statement.

According to Sham Times, the oppositionists have particularly promised
`disaster and ravages’ to the local Armenians. The threats are
reported to be real, with Turkey having given them the green light to
attack the community.

The Council has accused several young Armenians of `collaborating with
Assad forces’, `taking part in operations which claimed lives’ and
`providing military support to the Syrian regime’.

The rebels claim that the Armenians backed the Syrian government
forces in the cities of Latakia and Kessab.

The group warns of the consequences of the operations and military
support, promising to find what it calls the dangerous elements.

Fund for Syrian-Armenian Relief established

Fund for Syrian-Armenian Relief established

August 24, 2012 – 11:44 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – In a joint announcement made on Aug 23, the Eastern
Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church of America, the Armenian
Catholic Exarchate, the Armenian Missionary Association of America,
the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, and the Armenian Relief Society
announced the formation of the `Fund for Syrian-Armenian Relief,’ that
will offer urgently needed assistance to the historic Armenian
communities of Syria, The Armenian Weekly reported.

During the past week the heavily Armenian populated areas of Aleppo,
Kessab, Damascus, and Kamishli have been under siege by both state and
opposing forces and the physical safety of the people, as well as
their economic livelihood, are in great jeopardy.

The joining of the Armenian Orthodox, Evangelical, and Catholic
churches with the political and charitable organizations in the United
States, follows the pattern set in Aleppo where the three churches,
the three political parties, and all social and charitable
organizations have joined together to face the growing crisis.

Efforts are underway to reach out to other organizations to join the
joint committee. Fundraising efforts will be undertaken by this newly
formed joint U.S committee, together with their affiliates, to raise
funds to help the immediate needs of the Armenian community in Syria,
as well as for long-range efforts to maintain and restore the
community.

At present, assistance will come mainly through fundraising for
schools and other community institutions, which face severe shortfalls
as the crisis restricts their own financial capabilities. A portion of
the funds will also assist needy individuals directly affected by the
unrest.

The formation of a coordinating committee, with representation from
each of the participating organizations, will be announced imminently.
